Project description:This article modifies the traditional functional leadership model to accommodate contemporary needs in healthcare leadership based on two findings. First, the article argues that it is important that the ideal healthcare leadership emphasizes the outcomes of the patient care more than processes and structures used to deliver such care; and secondly, that the leadership must strive to attain effectiveness of their care provision and not merely targeting the attractive option of efficient operations. Based on these premises, the paper reviews the traditional Functional Leadership Model and the three elements that define the type of leadership an organization has namely, the tasks, the individuals, and the team. The article argues that concentrating on any one of these elements is not ideal and proposes adding a new element to the model to construct a novel Functional Result-Oriented healthcare leadership model. The recommended Functional-Results Oriented leadership model embosses the results element on top of the other three elements so that every effort on healthcare leadership is directed towards attaining excellent patient outcomes.

Project description:Leadership is a key feature in implementation efforts, which is highlighted in most implementation frameworks. However, in studying leadership and implementation, only few studies rely on established leadership theory, which makes it difficult to draw conclusions regarding what kinds of leadership managers should perform and under what circumstances. In industrial and organizational psychology, transformational leadership and contingent reward have been identified as effective leadership styles for facilitating change processes, and these styles map well onto the behaviors identified in implementation research. However, it has been questioned whether these general leadership styles are sufficient to foster specific results; it has therefore been suggested that the leadership should be specific to the domain of interest, e.g., implementation. To this end, an intervention specifically involving leadership, which we call implementation leadership, is developed and tested in this project. The aim of the intervention is to increase healthcare managers' generic implementation leadership skills, which they can use for any implementation efforts in the future.The intervention is conducted in healthcare in Stockholm County, Sweden, where first- and second-line managers were invited to participate. Two intervention groups are included, including 52 managers. Intervention group 1 consists of individual managers, and group 2 of managers from one division. A control group of 39 managers is additionally included. The intervention consists of five half-day workshops aiming at increasing the managers' implementation leadership, which is the primary outcome of this intervention. The intervention will be evaluated through a mixed-methods approach. A pre- and post-design applying questionnaires at three time points (pre-, directly after the intervention, and 6 months post-intervention) will be used, in addition to process evaluation questionnaires related to each workshop. In addition, interviews will be conducted over time to evaluate the intervention.The proposed intervention represents a novel contribution to the implementation literature, being the first to focus on strengthening healthcare managers' generic skills in implementation leadership.

Project description:BackgroundFormal leadership training is typically targeted at senior health professionals. The Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) was formed in 2016 to provide a leadership programme for students and early-career health professionals. This study analyses the effectiveness of the HLA scholarship programme as an intervention for improving interest in and preparing scholars for future leadership roles.MethodsSurvey data was used to assess the effectiveness of the HLA Scholarship program in cultivating leadership development. Questions required either multiple-choice, free text, ranking or Likert scale ('strongly agree', 'agree', 'neither agree nor disagree', 'disagree', 'strongly disagree) responses. Participants spanned six regions (London, Newcastle, Bristol, Belfast, Edinburgh, and Amsterdam) in four countries (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Netherlands). Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted, and insights were drawn from the open-ended survey questions using a leadership framework.ResultsSeventy participants who underwent the course between 2016 and 2020 completed the questionnaire. Nearly all (99%) found that the training provided on the programme had equipped them to be more effective leaders, with 86% of respondents stating that they were more likely to take on leadership roles. Nearly all (97.1%) found the course to be either of good or very good quality. Nineteen insights were identified from free text responses that fitted under one of the four themes of the leadership framework: "optimising", "resolving uncertainty", "enhancing adaptability", and "promulgating a vision".ConclusionsHealthcare leadership is a non-negotiable component of healthcare delivery in the 21st Century. As healthcare professionals, it is our duty to be effective leaders confident and competent in navigating the increasingly complex systems within which we operate for the benefit of ourselves, colleagues, and patients. By accounting for known shortcomings and developing ameliorative measures, the HLA Scholarship programme addresses unmet needs in a structured manner to support effective long-term healthcare leadership development.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Nowadays, health systems are generally acknowledged to be complex social systems. Consequently, scholars, academics, practitioners, and policy-makers are exploring how to adopt a complexity perspective in health policy and system research. While leadership and complexity has been studied extensively outside health, the implications of complexity theories for the study of leadership in healthcare have received limited attention. We carried out a scoping review of complex leadership (CL) in healthcare to investigate how CL in healthcare has been defined, theorised and conceptualised and to explore how 'CL' has been applied in healthcare settings. METHODS:We followed the methodological steps proposed by (Arksey and O'Malley, 2005): (1) specifying the research question, (2) identifying relevant studies, (3) study selection, (4) charting the data, (5) collating and summarizing the findings, and (6) reporting the results. We searched using Medline, Psychinfo, Wiley online library, and Google Scholar. Our inclusion criteria were: publication type (peer reviewed articles, theses, and book chapters); phenomenon of interest: complex leadership; context: healthcare and period of publication: between 2000 and 2016. RESULTS:Our search and selection resulted in 37 papers (16 conceptual papers, 14 empirical studies and 7 advocacy papers). We note that empirical studies on CL are few and almost all research reported by these papers was carried out in the North (mainly in USA and UK). We found that there is some variation in definitions of CL. Furthermore, the research papers adopt mostly an explorative or explanatory approach and do not focus on assessing effectiveness of CL approaches. Finally, we found that the majority of researchers seem to adhere to the mathematical complexity perspective. CONCLUSION:Complexity concepts derived from natural sciences may not automatically fit management of health services. Further research into how social complexity theories may offer researchers useful grounds to empirically test CL theories in health settings is warranted. Specific attention should be paid to the multi-layered nature of leadership.

Project description:This data article describes the contingent role of knowledge sharing between two leadership styles and innovation in higher education institutions in non-western countries. The dataset investigates the second-ordered (i.e. higher construct) among the relationships of study constructs, the nested relationship which gives birth to new constructs. Further, this dataset provides guidance for readers willing to conduct research in the management field. The dataset has been collected using a self-administered questionnaire obtained from the academic staff in the selected universities. The structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied using IBM SPSS AMOS. In this data article, several analysis techniques have been used. The results obtained from this dataset shows a significant relationship between leadership and innovation, and the results show that the moderation effect of knowledge sharing is partially supported.

Project description:The number, scale and ambition of transdisciplinary research initiatives between the global north and the global south is increasing, yet there is very little theoretical or empirical scholarship on how to lead and manage implementation to promote responsible practice. Within science, technology and innovation (STI) studies and decolonising research frameworks, and utilising collaborative autoethnography, this study codifies experience with implementing the 'Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments' (RISE) program (2017-2020). Our specific aim is to explore the leadership and management tensions and challenges of implementing transboundary transdisciplinary research. The findings reaffirm the importance of research leaders and managers carefully operationalising north-south research by critically reflecting on power asymmetries between disciplines, partners and locations, leveraging the potential for transdisciplinary consortia to build research capabilities in the global south, and creating a culture of reflexivity on the historical and social positionality in which research is designed, funded, implemented and evaluated. The findings foreground the role of boundary-spanning 'integrators' and 'pracademics', roles that have received little attention to date but are essential for effective delivery and societal impact beyond scientific advances. A framework for implementing north-south transdisciplinary research is outlined with five domains: (1) collaborative leadership; (2) agile management; (3) flexible consortia; (4) researcher positionality; and (5) co-design and participation. The framework can support efforts for responsibly designing and implementing large, transdisciplinary, cross-country research programs in line with ambitions for decolonising north-south research.

Project description:To identify and empirically investigate the dimensions of leadership in medical education and healthcare professions.A population-based design with a focus group and a survey were used to identify the perceived competencies for effective leadership in medical education.The focus group, consisting of five experts from three countries (Austria n=1; Germany n=2; Switzerland n=2), was conducted (all masters of medical education), and the survey was sent to health professionals from medical schools and teaching hospitals in six countries (Austria, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the UK and the USA).The participants were educators, physicians, nurses and other health professionals who held academic positions in medical education. A total of 229 completed the survey: 135 (59.0%) women (mean age=50.3 years) and 94 (41.0%) men (mean age=51.0 years).A 63-item survey measuring leadership competencies was developed and administered via electronic mail to participants.Exploratory principal component analyses yielded five factors accounting for 51.2% of the variance: (1) social responsibility, (2) innovation, (3) self-management, (4) task management and (5) justice orientation. There were significant differences between physicians and other health professionals on some factors (Wilk's ?=0.93, p<0.01). Social responsibility was rated higher by other health professionals (M=71.09) than by physicians (M=67.12), as was innovation (health professionals M=80.83; physicians M=76.20) and justice orientation (health professionals M=21.27; physicians M=20.46).The results of the principal component analyses support the theoretical meaningfulness of these factors, their coherence, internal consistency and parsimony in explaining the variance of the data. Although there are some between-group differences, the competencies appear to be stable and coherent.

Project description:Advancements in genomics and personalized medicine not only effect healthcare delivery from patient and provider standpoints, but also reshape biomedical discovery. We are in the era of the '-omics', wherein an individual's genome, transcriptome, proteome and metabolome can be scrutinized to the finest resolution to paint a personalized biochemical fingerprint that enables tailored treatments, prognoses, risk factors, etc. Digitization of this information parlays into 'big data' informatics-driven evidence-based medical practice. While individualized patient management is a key beneficiary of next-generation medical informatics, this data also harbors a wealth of novel therapeutic discoveries waiting to be uncovered. 'Big data' informatics allows for networks-driven systems pharmacodynamics whereby drug information can be coupled to cellular- and organ-level physiology for determining whole-body outcomes. Patient '-omics' data can be integrated for ontology-based data-mining for the discovery of new biological associations and drug targets. Here we highlight the potential of 'big data' informatics for clinical pharmacology.

Project description:This study investigates the driving factors behind frugal innovation in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). It specifically examines sustainable leadership as an independent variable, considering its impact on frugal innovation, with sources of knowledge mediating this relationship and information credibility moderating the effects. Employing a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach, data were gathered from 325 employees of SMEs in Pakistan. This methodology was chosen for its ability to handle complex relationships between multiple variables simultaneously, offering robust insights into the interplay among sustainable leadership, sources of knowledge, information credibility, and frugal innovation. The results reveal significant associations between sustainable leadership, sources of knowledge, information credibility, and frugal innovation. Sustainable leadership demonstrates a substantial influence on both sources of knowledge and frugal innovation. Furthermore, sources of knowledge play a vital role in mediating the relationship between sustainable leadership and frugal innovation. Information credibility emerges as a significant moderator, affecting the pathways between sustainable leadership, sources of knowledge, and frugal innovation. The findings underscore the importance of sustainable leadership and credible information sources in driving frugal innovation within SMEs. They highlight the intricate interdependencies among these variables and emphasize the pivotal role of information credibility in shaping these dynamics. These results carry significant implications for SMEs in Pakistan, shedding light on the mechanisms through which sustainable leadership and reliable knowledge sources can stimulate frugal innovation in emerging economies.

Project description:This study was conducted with the purpose of exploring the impact of positive entrepreneurial psychological quality in innovation and entrepreneurship education, as well as the development of maker education in colleges and universities. The questionnaire survey method – The Positive Mental Characters Scale for Chinese College Students – and the SPSS 26.0 mathematical statistical analysis software were adopted to analyze and characterize the development of innovation and entrepreneurship education in colleges and universities, as well as the practice of maker education. The results show that there are differences in the factors that affect the positive entrepreneurial psychological quality of college students studying different majors in the liberal arts and sciences. Family economy has the most obvious impact on liberal arts students, sports activities have the most obvious impact on science students, has and grades have the most obvious impact on engineering students; the average score of college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship ability is around 3.0, showing that the overall innovation and creativity ability is general. Furthermore, there are differences in the development of the maker education model between the eastern and western universities. Overall, the maker faculty of eastern universities are more complete, with a larger number of professors, associate seniors, and intermediate teachers. In addition, the investigation on the positive entrepreneurial psychological quality shows a positive effect on cultivating students’ healthy entrepreneurial quality as well as promoting the development and practice of maker education.
