Project description:Over multiple years, the didactic concept of "peer-assisted learning" (PAL) has proved to be valuable for medical education. Particularly in the field of the nowadays widely established Skills-Labs, the assignment of student tutors is both popular and effective. The aim of the underlying study is to assess the current status of PAL programs within German medical faculties' Skills-Labs regarding their distribution, extent, structure and content based on a nation-wide survey.All 36 medical faculties in Germany were contacted and asked for their participation (via telephone or in written form) in the survey encompassing 16 central questions as to the structure of established PAL programs. Data obtained were subject to quantitative and qualitative analysis.35 of 36 (97.2%) medical faculties participated in the survey. A PAL program was shown to be established at 33 (91.7%) faculties. However, the results show distinct differences between different faculties with respect to extent and content of the PAL programs.Among German medical Skills-Labs, PAL has been established almost ubiquitously. Further studies on the conception and standardization of training concepts appear to be pivotal for the advancement of PAL in the context of Skills-Labs.

Project description:This study evaluates knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of adolescents regarding vaccinations. A cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample of 771 adolescents, aged 11 to 18 selected from a random sample of 5 public schools, in the period between March and May 2017, in the geographical area of Naples. A self-administered questionnaire was used to seek information about: 1) socio-demographic characteristics; 2) knowledge of vaccine-preventable diseases; 3) attitudes towards vaccinations; 4) behavior regarding vaccinations. 57.2% had a fair/satisfactory knowledge of vaccine-preventable diseases. This knowledge was significantly higher in those who had at least one graduated parent, those who had received information about the vaccines from physicians and those who needed additional information about the vaccines. With regards to attitude, 41.3% of adolescents had a very favorable attitude by responding 9 or 10 towards the utility of vaccines in preventing diseases. This was significantly associated with the usefulness of information received about vaccinations and with age of respondents. Regarding vaccination decisions, 47.2% believed that adolescents should make vaccination decisions for themselves. These results highlight the need to implement educational interventions to improve adolescents' understanding of vaccinations so that they are more informed in decisions regarding their health.

Project description:BackgroundEvidence on peer educators' experiences of implementing the school-based educational interventions on malaria prevention would be used as inputs for malaria eliminating efforts. This study explored the acceptability of the school-based peer-learning and education approach on malaria prevention (PLEA-malaria) among peer educators in Ethiopia.MethodsThis process evaluation study was aimed to examine the success of the school-based PLEA-malaria that was implemented in 75 primary schools in Jimma from 2017 to 2019. A mixed research method was employed to collect post-intervention data from 404 peer educators and key stakeholders. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and interview guide. Multivariable linear regression modelling was performed using SPSS software version 26.0. Atlas ti 7.5 for windows was used to analyse the qualitative data. The result was presented by triangulating the findings of the qualitative and quantitative methods.ResultsThe mean score (M, range = R) of acceptability of PLEA-malaria was (M = 20.20, R = 6-30). The regression modelling showed that age; (β = 0.264, 95% CI 0.266 to 0.632), GPA; (β = 0.106, 95% CI 0.008 to 0.074), parental readiness for malaria education; (β = 0.184, 95% CI 0.711 to 2.130), frequency of peer education; (β = 0.232, 95% CI 1.087 to 2.514) and team spirit; (β = 0.141, 95% CI 0.027 to 0.177) were positively associated with the acceptability while this relationship was negative for the number of ITN in the household; (β = - 0.111, 95% CI - 1.182 to -0.13) and frequency of parent-student communication; (β = - 0.149, 95% CI - 1.201 to - 0.293). The qualitative study identified facilitators of PLEA-malaria (e.g. team formation process, outcome efficacy, presence of schools' structures, schools priority, and support) and barriers (e.g. low commitments, threat appraisal, response efficacy, and PLEA-malaria implementation gaps).ConclusionThe results suggested that the acceptability of the school-based PLEA-malaria was higher implying the strategy is promising in promoting malaria prevention in primary schools. Considering factors related to personal, access to malaria preventive services, school system, and social support in education and behaviour change interventions would be important to improve the acceptability. The relationship about how an improvement in the level of acceptability would in turn influences malaria preventive behaviours among the students should be investigated.

Project description:BackgroundPatient safety is a top priority for any health care system. Most universities are looking for teaching methods through which they would be able to enhance students' clinical decision-making capabilities and their self-centered learning to ensure safe and quality nursing care. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of patient safety education through problem-based learning (PBL) on nursing students' knowledge, attitude, and perceptions toward patient safety.MethodsThis randomized, controlled trial was conducted from September 2019 to January 2020. A total of 78 fourth-year nursing students participated in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. In the intervention group, the educational materials were presented to the students using the PBL method during eight sessions of 45-60 min. In each control group, nursing students received eight education sessions through lectures and discussing the same educational content. Data were gathered 1 month after the intervention using demographic information and knowledge, attitudes, and perception questionnaires. Data were analyzed in SPSS ver. 22.0 using descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential (chi-square test, independent t-test, paired t-test, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA)) statistics.ResultsThe results indicated that the difference in the mean scores of knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of the nursing students about patient safety was statistically significant between the two groups after the PBL education (p = 0.001). The mean scores of students' knowledge, attitude, and perceptions of patient safety increased significantly in the intervention group.ConclusionsImplementing patient safety education through PBL positively affects knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of patient safety among nursing students. Thus, the research team recommended the PBL method to be used by nursing professors to improve nursing students' clinical skills and cognitive abilities to ensure safe patient care.Trial registrationIRCT20190925044881N1 ; October 17, 2019.

Project description:IntroductionOngoing developments in prenatal anomaly screening necessitate continuous updating of counsellors' knowledge. We explored the effect of a refresher counselling course on participants' knowledge of prenatal screening.MethodsWe investigated the association between knowledge and counsellors' working experience. Also, the association between knowledge and counsellors' attitude towards prenatal screening was determined. All counsellors in the North-West region of the Netherlands were invited to attend a refresher counselling course and fill in both a pre-course and a post-course questionnaire. The participants consisted of midwifes, sonographers and gynaecologists. A 55-item questionnaire assessed pre-course (T0) and post-course (T1) knowledge. At T0, counsellors' attitude towards the prenatal screening program was assessed and its association with knowledge analysed.ResultsOf 387 counsellors, 68 (18%) attended the course and completed both questionnaires. Knowledge increased significantly from 77.7% to 84.6% (p<0.01). Scores were lowest regarding congenital heart diseases. Participants with ultrasound experience scored higher on T0, but improvement was seen in participants with and without ultrasound experience. Participants with a positive attitude towards a free-of-charge first trimester combined test had higher knowledge scores than participants with a negative attitude (62% vs 46%; p=0.002).ConclusionsA refresher course improved counsellors' knowledge on prenatal screening. Ultrasound experience and a positive attitude towards free screening may be associated with higher knowledge levels. Participating in a mandatory refresher counselling course is useful for the continuous improvement of healthcare practitioners' knowledge. More research on the effect of knowledge and attitude on the quality of prenatal screening is necessary.

Project description:Peer-assisted learning encourages students to participate more actively in the dissection process and promotes thoughtful dissection. We implemented peer-assisted dissection in 2012 and compared its effects on students' self-assessments of learning and their academic achievement with those of faculty-led dissection. All subjects performed dissections after a lecture about upper-limb gross anatomy. Experimental group (n = 134) dissected a cadaver while guided by peer tutors who had prepared for the dissection in advance, and control group (n = 71) dissected a cadaver after the introduction by a faculty via prosection. Self-assessment scores regarding the learning objectives related to upper limbs were significantly higher in experimental group than in control group. Additionally, experimental group received significantly higher academic scores than did control group. The students in peer-assisted learning perceived themselves as having a better understanding of course content and achieved better academic results compared with those who participated in faculty-led dissection. Peer-assisted dissection contributed to self-perception and to the ability to retain and explain anatomical knowledge.

Project description:BACKGROUND: With new care models such as the medical home, there is an expanding need for primary care providers to be trained in dermatologic procedures. Yet, many internal medicine residency program graduates feel unprepared to perform these procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a structured peer-assisted learning approach to improve residents' knowledge and skills related to common dermatologic assessment techniques. METHODS: Eight medicine-dermatology resident educators, with a faculty member, facilitated dermatologic procedure workshops for 28 internal medicine and medicine-pediatrics resident learners. Learners completed preworkshop and postworkshop surveys, assessing their knowledge and skill levels as well as the efficacy of the resident educators and the educational value of the workshop as a whole. RESULTS: All learners were able to properly demonstrate the techniques at the workshop's conclusion. The median sum score of self-reported knowledge increased from 3 to 9.5 (scale, 0-10; P < .001). The median sum score of self-reported skills increased from 10 to 16 (scale, 4-20; P < .001). Resident educators were favorably evaluated by their peers, and 96% of participants rated the experience as being of high educational value. CONCLUSION: Peer-assisted learning is effective in teaching dermatologic procedures in graduate medical education. Resident learners found peer-assisted learning to be beneficial and rated their peer teachers highly. Further studies should focus on outcomes in practice, looking at the number of dermatologic procedures performed by learners, as well as the effects on resident educators.

Project description:IntroductionPerceived difficulties in initiating insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) may prevent many general practitioners (GPs) from using insulin even when recommended in guidelines. This paper describes a Royal Australian College of General Practitioners accredited education program on starting insulin in T2D, and its impact on GPs' attitudes and behavior.MethodsA faculty comprising GPs with diabetes expertise, Credentialed Diabetes Nurse Educators, and endocrinologist developed and implemented the education program. The program content was highly procedure focussed, emphasizing simple, best-practice processes for starting insulin therapy and focussing on multidisciplinary models of care. The highly interactive format of the workshops included peer-to-peer learning, in which education was led by diabetes-experienced GP educators, as well as case study-based approaches and small group discussions. GP attendees were asked to rate their individual confidence and attitudes at the beginning and end of the meeting. In addition, participants (n = 220) from two workshops in 2013 were sent a survey 3 months after the meeting to gauge the longer-term impact on their clinical practice.ResultsSince 2008, more than 2500 GPs have attended the workshops, and report substantial improvements in confidence; after attending, more GPs were willing to start insulin within their practice. Evaluations at 3 months post-meeting indicate that the increased confidence was associated with behavioral changes in the subgroup evaluated at this time (n = 48). Success of this program was attributed to peer-to-peer education, multidisciplinary input, easily implemented best practice procedures and checklists for starting insulin, and constant adjustment of meeting process and content based on feedback and guideline changes.ConclusionA peer-to-peer, interactive GP education program reduced GPs' perceptions of the difficulties of starting insulin in T2D and achieved changes in attendees' clinical practice. This education program offers an effective approach to overcome the therapeutic inertia that is too common in diabetes management.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Adequate knowledge and positive attitude toward menopause are important for women to tackle changes related to menopause. Even though all women experience menopause at some stage in their life, teachers face more difficulties more than other female employees due to the nature of their roles do. In Eritrea, menopause has been given little attention hence gaps exist concerning women's knowledge, attitude, and the effects of health education on the same subject. This study aimed at assessing the effect of health education on knowledge and attitude of menopause among middle-aged teachers in elementary, junior, and secondary schools of Asmara, Eritrea. METHOD:A semi-experimental design with pre-intervention, immediate post-intervention, and three-month follow up test was used in this study. The data was collected from 99 middle age teachers using stratified random sampling. The intervention was done using lectures, group discussions, brochures, and handouts. Data on socio-demographics, knowledge, and attitude was collected using a pre-designed questionnaire. The effect of educational training at the three-time points was evaluated by repeated measure ANOVA using SPSS version 22. RESULTS:The mean scores of correct knowledge at pre-intervention, immediate post-intervention, and 3-months follow-up were 12.3/22 (SD?=?3.06), 17.3/22 (SD?=?3.21), and 16.5/22 (SD?=?2.52) respectively. A significant difference in scores of knowledge at the three-time points was observed due to the educational intervention with a statistical significance of (p?<? 0.0001). Post-hoc analysis revealed that knowledge score immediately after intervention was significantly greater than that of pre-intervention (p?<? 0.0001), and 3-months follow-up (p?=?0.004). The mean scores of attitude at the three-time points were 27.9/45 (SD?=?5.14), 28.3/45(SD?=?5.25), 28.32/45(SD?=?5.12). The educational intervention had brought a change in the mean scores of attitude at the three-time point with a statistical significance of (p?<?0.0001). Post-hoc analysis revealed that attitude scores at immediate post-intervention were also significant (p?=?0.001) with the 3-months follow up at (p?<?0.0001) were higher than that of pre-intervention. CONCLUSION:The structured educational intervention was beneficial to the studied women in intensifying their knowledge and tuning them toward a positive attitude. Hence, proper health education programs regarding menopause are strongly recommended.

Project description:This scoping review presents an overview of cognitive and social congruence in peer assisted learning (PAL), as the positive effects of PAL have been shown to rely on these critical factors. The scoping review followed the guidelines of the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. Databases were systematically searched for articles that focus on PAL and cognitive and social congruence. Participants of the studies included were medical, health science, polytechnic, law and paramedic students. Studies that assessed cognitive and social congruence by questionnaires with a 5-point Likert scale were regarded for meta-analytic pooling. Sixteen of 786 identified articles were included in the review, whereof 9 studies were considered for meta-analytic pooling. The meta-analytic pooling showed that tutees tend to see their student tutors as cognitively (Mweighted = 3.84; range of Mweighted = 2.69-4.56) and socially congruent (Mweighted = 3.95; range of Mweighted = 2.33-4.57). Further, characteristics of student tutors are summarized. This scoping review presents an overview and operationalization of cognitive and social congruence in PAL. Based on the presented meta-analytic pooling, cognitive and social congruence were found to represent relevant key factors in the PAL context. Thus, this theoretical background should be acknowledged as a core concept for tutorials within the medical curriculum.
