Approximations in English language arts: Scaffolding a shared teaching practice.

ABSTRACT: Recent research highlights the importance of providing teacher candidates with opportunities to approximate practice. Less attention focuses on tools teacher educators use within and surrounding approximations to focus candidates' attention on features of practice. This multi-case study investigates how three teacher educators use different approximations in ways that strategically reduce the complexity of learning to teach and scaffold the development of practice. Data indicate teacher educators capitalized on four tools that scaffolded and shaped approximations into spaces for co-constructing shared understandings of practice. These tools include: instructional activities, representations of practice, planning templates, and specified texts and instructional goals.

Project description:ObjectivesThe importance of 'whole person' or 'holistic' care is widely recognised, particularly with an increasing prevalence of chronic multimorbidity internationally. This approach to care is a defining feature of general practice. However, its precise meaning remains ambiguous. We aimed to determine how the term 'whole person' care is understood by general practitioners (GPs), and whether it is synonymous with '[w]holistic' and 'biopsychosocial' care.DesignSystematic literature review.MethodsMEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Proquest Dissertations and Theses, Science.gov (Health and Medicine database), Google Scholar and included studies' reference lists were searched with an unlimited date range. Systematic or literature reviews, original research, theoretical articles or books/book chapters; specific to general practice; relevant to the research question; and published in English were included. Included literature was critically appraised, and data were extracted and analysed using thematic synthesis.ResultsFifty publications were included from 4297 non-duplicate records retrieved. Six themes were identified: a multidimensional, integrated approach; the importance of the therapeutic relationship; acknowledging doctors' humanity; recognising patients' individual personhood; viewing health as more than absence of disease; and employing a range of treatment modalities. Whole person, biopsychosocial and holistic terminology were often used interchangeably, but were not synonymous.ConclusionsWhole person, holistic and biopsychosocial terminology are primarily characterised by a multidimensional approach to care and incorporate additional elements described above. Whole person care probably represents the closest representation of the basis for general practice. Health systems aiming to provide whole person care need to address the challenge of integrating the care of other health professionals, and maintaining the patient-doctor relationship central to the themes identified. Project description:This study aims to improve the quality of English teaching in contemporary colleges and universities, so as to cultivate more English translation talents. Taking corpus, English translation, and teaching practice as the main research horizons, this study analyzes the application of master of translation and interpreting (MTI) course design, English translation, and task migration by combining the task migration algorithm under Internet of Things (IoT) with the self-built corpus, so as to realize the cultivation of translation talents and design of teaching practice. A translation corpus is constructed, a two-way interactive online course is designed, and the experimental results of the complete local migration algorithm (CLM algorithm), random migration algorithm (RM algorithm), and greedy heuristic migration algorithm (GHM algorithm) used in English teaching practice courses are analyzed and compared. The experimental simulation results reveal that the GHM algorithm proposed in this study shows good system stability, its duration is 60% better than that of the CLM algorithm, and its system throughput is increased by 50% compared with the CLM algorithm. In addition, the maximum delay time has little effect on the system throughput. When the system time slot length is fixed at 20 ms, the user migration rate of the genetic algorithm is the highest under the different total numbers of users. In addition, in view of the wide application of neural network in English translation teaching, this study establishes an English translation evaluation model based on the combination of particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and neural network and compares it with the traditional neural network model in simulation experiments. The results show that the addition of PSO algorithm can effectively improve the convergence speed of artificial neural network (ANN), reduce the training time of the model, and improve the accuracy of the ANN network. Using the PSO algorithm to train the neural network, the optimal solutions of different particle swarms can be obtained, and the error is small. The PSO-ANNs model can promote the quality of English translation teaching and improve the English translation ability of the students. Therefore, applying the task transfer algorithm and PSO algorithm to the practice of English translation teaching has greatly improved the efficiency of the English classroom. To sum up, this study provides new ideas for the curriculum design of contemporary college English teaching and has reference value for the cultivation of college English translation talents.

Project description:With the rapid development of digitalisation, multimedia and network-based communication technology, all walks of life are undergoing change and development driven by the application of the internet to conventional industries. Especially because of the outbreak of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), English teaching and learning modes are undergoing revolutionary changes worldwide (Wong et al., 2020). Online courses and materials have become the norm for students, and combined with offline English learning activities, an online and offline blended learning mode has ultimately emerged (Graham, 2006; Whittaker, 2013). Whereas blended learning has been considered in several contexts, it has been less investigated in the field of blended English learning mode for the listening comprehension ability and emotional experiences of young learners of Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) while doing the tasks. Thus, this study focussed on the achievement and experience of Chinese EFL junior high school students during blended learning using Quizlet software as the online learning tool. This study aimed to explore the following: (1) the effect of the online and offline blended mode on the learning outcomes of students and (2) the experience of students while engaging with blended tasks in terms of their learning interest, attitude, and strategy use in English listening learning. A 4-month teaching intervention involving the online and offline blended mode was conducted in English listening classes. Adopting mixed-methods qualitative and quantitative research, this study examined the engagement process of two classes of students and analysed data from their English listening tests and follow-up in-depth interviews. The results suggested that the blended activity was conducive to enhancing the listening performance of students. Moreover, the attitudes of students toward English listening learning shifted from a relatively negative engagement to a more positive one. Meanwhile, the interest of students grew and their learning strategies became more diversified. These findings have implications for English teaching and learning activity design for young learners.
