Project description:Academic misconduct/dishonesty has become widespread behavior among many university students across the globe, and medical education is not an exception. Until recently, few efforts have been made to study the dishonest behavior in Middle-Eastern universities. This study examined the prevalence and predisposing factors of cheating among medical students in Saudi Arabia and suggests suitable preventive measures. A cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted at a government medical college during the 2014-2015 academic year. The response rate was 58.5% (421/720). The overall cheating behavior practiced by the participants was 29%, predominantly by male students. High GPA scoring students were the least likely to cheat. The participants living with their families were more likely to cheat compared to those who were living apart from their families. The reasons participants gave to justify their cheating behavior included getting better grades, passing the course, and lacking preparation while still recognizing that cheating is a 'mistake.' Overall, significant academic misconduct concerning cheating was found among the Saudi medical students; this misconduct is alarming in a reputable government institution. The implementation of strict punishments, requiring ethical courses and creating ethical awareness by exploiting the potential of Islamic religious belief might help to control this problem.

Project description:Objectives:This study aimed to determine attitudes towards and perceptions of plagiarism among medical students in Saudi Arabia. Methods:This cross-sectional, multicentre study was conducted between April and May 2018 and involved medical students enrolled in three medical schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The previously validated Attitude Towards Plagiarism questionnaire was used to evaluate approval (i.e. a positive attitude) and disapproval of plagiarism (i.e. a negative attitude) among medical students. Furthermore, this study evaluated whether attending medical writing courses or courses in medical ethics influenced medical students' attitudes towards plagiarism. Results:A total of 551 students participated in the study (response rate = 73.5%). A significant association was found between mean negative and positive attitude scores and grade point average (GPA; P = 0.004 and 0.007, respectively). Students attending medical ethics courses had higher mean negative attitude scores compared to students who did not attend such courses (odds ratio = 2.369, 95% confidence interval: 1.540-3.645; P <0.001). Attending medical ethics courses was associated with a significantly more negative attitude towards plagiarism (P <0.001, each). Conclusion:The majority of medical students in Saudi Arabia included in this study indicated a highly negative attitude towards plagiarism. A higher GPA, the authoring of a published manuscript and attending courses in medical ethics were associated with negative attitudes towards plagiarism among medical students.

Project description:BackgroundMedical students can enhance their knowledge by accessing patients' medical records and documenting patient care. This study assessed medical students' access to paper medical records and electronic health records (EHRs) in Saudi Arabia and compared students' experience of accessing paper medical records and EHR from their perspective.MethodsThis cross-sectional study enrolled second-year to intern medical students randomly from different medical colleges in Saudi Arabia. A self-developed survey was administered to them. It comprised 28 items in three sections: general information about medical students and their level of accessing medical records, their experience with the medical record system used in hospitals, and their preference for the medical record type.Results62.8% of participants had access to medical records, with 66.1% of them having access to EHRs and 83.27% had read-only access. The EHR group and paper group mostly liked being able to reach medical records effortlessly (70.1% and 67.1%, respectively). The EHR group had a better experience compared to the paper group with U = 5200, Mean Rank = 122.73, P = .04. Students who trained in University - owned and National Guard hospitals had better experiences compared to students who trained in other hospitals with Mean Ranks =122.35, and 147.99, respectively.ConclusionIncorporating EHR access into the medical curriculum is essential for creating new educational opportunities that are not otherwise available to medical students.

Project description:BackgroundThe practice of hand hygiene (HH) has prime importance among Health Care Professionals (HCPs) and non-compliance could cause adverse consequences. By keeping the importance of HH in mind, this study aims at investigating the knowledge and attitudes towards HH among medical students and interns at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (SA).MethodsThe study includes 453 medical students and interns (189 males & 264 females). This study was completed in three months; from September to November 2017. The World Health Organization (WHO) HH questionnaire was used and data were analyzed on SPSS-21.ResultsTwo-third of the participants 292 (64.2%) had formal training in HH in the last three years. Almost half of the participants 254 (56.1%) had correct knowledge regarding the major course of transmission of potentially detrimental microbes among patients in the healthcare premises. Just 124 (27.4%) of the respondents had the correct knowledge about the most common basis of germs accountable for healthcare-related infections. Females had significantly better knowledge than males regarding the type of HH technique needed before palpation of the abdomen (177(54%) Vs. 151(46%); P < 0.002), before an injection (175(54.5%) Vs. 146(45.5%); P < 0.007), after emptying a bedpan (207(64.7%) Vs. 113(35.3%); P < 0.001), following discarding examination gloves (256(60.4% Vs. 168(39.6%); P < 0.001] and after exposure to blood (200(64.1%) Vs. 112(35.%); P < 0.001). Female participants had better knowledge than males regarding the type of HH actions. Females also had a significantly better attitude towards the importance of HH than males (240(62.5%) Vs. 144(37.5%); P < 0.001).ConclusionThe majority of the participants' knowledge regarding HH was not up to the mark; however, female students had better knowledge compared to male students. The medical students and interns' knowledge and positive attitude towards HH can play a pivotal role in preventing HCPs associated infections and it would overall decrease the infection-related burden on the hospital and governmental budgets. It is suggested that multi-dimensional plans are required to change this low compliance to a higher rate.

Project description:Little is known about the obstacles medical students face when conducting research in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the proportion of medical students in research has been unknown in our region compared to other regions. We sought to identify the barriers and motivators that influence undergraduate medical students in pursuing research. This was a cross-sectional study design, utilizing an online survey distributed through social media platforms from the 17th of December 2021 to the 8th of April 2022. The survey was distributed to four universities in Saudi Arabia. Participants’ characteristics, details regarding involvement in research, and attitude towards research were collected. Frequency measures were used to characterize the demographics and chi-squared tests to determine associations. A total of 435 students were included in the final analysis. The highest proportion of students that responded were second year, followed by first year medical students. Less than half (47.6%) of medical students were involved in research. A significant correlation was revealed between the involvement in research and higher participants’ Grade Point Average (GPA). The top three incentives for pursuing undergraduate research were “admission into residency programs” (44.8%), “interest in research” (28.7%), and “financial return” (10.8%). However, the top three limitations were “lack of time” (29.2%), “lack of mentoring” (16.8%), and “lack of interest in research” (14.7%). System-related barriers and motivators were the main reasons behind the involvement of medical students in research. Our study is a call for action to raise awareness among medical students about the importance of research and to provide solutions to overcome these barriers.

Project description:Human papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, is responsible for a variety of cancers. HPV vaccines can help prevent this infection and its potentially devastating carcinogenic outcomes. Although the incidence of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers among males is increasing, few studies have been published on HPV knowledge and vaccine acceptability among males. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed knowledge about HPV and the vaccine, as well as its acceptability, among third- and fourth-year male medical students in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Respondents were enrolled in any of the medical colleges in Jeddah from February to December 2018. A validated survey was used to collect information on HPV infection and vaccine knowledge and to ask questions assessing vaccine acceptability. HPV knowledge scores were created, and vaccine acceptability predictors were assessed with logistic regression. We collected data from 517 participants. Approximately 74% of the students had heard of HPV, with a mean knowledge score of 5.9 ± 4.6 out of 16; only 42% had heard of the HPV vaccine, with a mean knowledge score of 0.9 ± 1.6 out of 7. Among the respondents, 48.9% were interested in receiving the HPV vaccine. Although HPV infection and vaccine knowledge did not correlate with vaccine acceptability, those who had previously received the hepatitis B vaccine were more interested in receiving the HPV vaccine. In conclusion, male medical students had low HPV knowledge. Improving their HPV knowledge is important, as they are future health-care providers. The promotion of HPV vaccines in this potentially influential group is crucial for achieving effective disease prevention.

Project description:BackgroundHealth care is a basic human right, and Saudi Arabia affirms these rights for all its citizens.ObjectivesTo assess the knowledge of medical students regarding health rights in Saudi Arabia.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) from September 2015 through November 2015. A questionnaire written in English collected demographic data and included questions about reproductive health care and health rights of women and patients with cancer, senility, or special needs.ResultsOf the 267 participants, 184 (68.9%) were female, and 252 (94.4%) were Saudi. Regarding consent, 87 (32.6%) and 113 (42.3%) participants believed a female patient required the consent of a male guardian to receive medical treatment or surgery, respectively, in Saudi Arabia, and only 106 (39.7%) knew that a female patient could provide consent for a caesarean section. Sixty-six (24.7%) believed that abortion is never allowed in Islam. Only 93 (34.8%) were aware that acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients had health rights, about half (144, 53.9%) knew that cancer patients have a right to full information, and most (181, 67.8%) believed that a patient had the right to withhold health information from his/her family. Approximately half were aware that cancer patients have the right to free medical treatment (138, 51.7%) or that health rights applied to special needs patients (137, 51.3%) and senile patients (122, 45.7%).ConclusionsThe knowledge of KAU medical students regarding health rights of certain patient populations highlights the importance of health rights education in medical school.

Project description:Behavioral addiction is identified as any compulsive, repeated, and persistent behavior that leads to significant and functionally impairing harm or distress. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of internet, video-gaming, and pornography addictions among medical students in Western region. In addition, we intend to investigate the relationship between these behavioral addictions with stress and anxiety. Our study was a cross-sectional study with a sample size of 225. The study participants were medical students in their 3rd, 4th, and 5th academic years from five different medical colleges in Western region. The questionnaire included demographics and adapted five different pre-validated scales: Young's Internet Addiction Test - Short Version (IAT-SV), Internet Gaming Disorder Scale 9 - Short Form (IGDS9-SF), (PPC scale), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7). The IAT-SV scale showed: 71 (31.6%) of the participants had normal internet usage, 51 (22.7%) participants showed problematic usage, and 103 (45.8%) used the internet pathologically. The IGDS9-SF scale had observed the following values: 220 participants (97.8%) were non-disordered, and 5 participants (2.2%) were found to be disordered. Statistical analysis showed a highly significant association between stress and problematic pornography consumption (P < 0.01), and internet addiction (P <0.001). Moreover, there was a significant association between anxiety and internet gaming disorder (P < 0.01). This study showed high prevalence of internet addiction and low prevalence of internet gaming disorder. Also, it gave more understanding to a possible association between these behavioral addictions with stress and anxiety.

Project description:BackgroundPain is a leading cause of disability and accounts for many hospital and physical therapy visits. Current pain science understanding has evolved and changed substantially in the past 20 years; however, university health science curricula may not have progressed at the same rate. This study aimed to examine knowledge about pain neurophysiology among physical therapy students in Saudi Arabia, and to compare their knowledge across different education levels and by gender.MethodsA cross-sectional study conducted to examine the pain neurophysiology knowledge among college physical therapy students in Saudi Arabia. The Revised Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire (12 items) was used. Descriptive statistics including frequencies and percentages were used to describe the sample. Analysis of variance and t-test were also used to examine the significant differences between scores.ResultsPhysical therapy students (n?=?202) from 18 different universities in Saudi Arabia participated in this study. The mean score of the participants on the questionnaire was 6.20?±?2.07 (i.e., 52%?±?17%) and there was no significance difference between males and females. There was a statistically significant incremental increase in total score through the educational process (P?<?0.05); however, this increase was very small comparing early- and final educational-level students (8% in RNPQ).ConclusionWhile final year physical therapy students showed higher levels of pain science knowledge than those at the beginning of their course, the magnitude of the difference was small and likely of little meaningful relevance. This may reflect the need for more emphasis on pain science in the physical therapy curriculum in Saudi Arabia.

Project description:IntroductionMedication errors (MEs) are a huge burden on any healthcare system and have been associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The medical literature reported heavily on MEs but lacked focus on analyzing high-risk medications such as antimicrobials.Research design and methodsThis was a retrospective analysis of the MEs database reported by the eastern region's medical centers in Saudi Arabia from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. We used descriptive analysis to identify most common antimicrobials with errors, the stage of antimicrobial errors, type of the errors, contributing factors to the errors, and categories of errors based on the National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention (NCC-MERP) classification of errors.ResultsA total of 1422 (22.1%) antimicrobial errors were identified out of 6412 MEs. Amoxicillin/Clavulanate (18%) was the most common antimicrobial reported in the database. Most errors occurred in the prescribing phase (87.6%) and included mainly incorrect doses (32.1%) and duplicate therapy (20.5%). In addition, most errors were identified as category B (72.5%). Finally, inexperienced personnel (57.9%) was the most cited contributing factor.ConclusionThis study revealed that antimicrobial errors occur primarily during prescription and that policy gaps and inexperienced staff were contributory factors. To improve, the focus should shift to physician education, clear dosing guidelines, efficient workload management, and implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs to promote appropriate antimicrobial use.
