CuInTe? Nanocrystals: Shape and Size Control, Formation Mechanism and Application, and Use as Photovoltaics.

ABSTRACT: We report on the synthesis of CuInTe? nanoparticles and their function in photovoltaic equipment, such as solar cells. Under certain synthesis conditions, the CuInTe? nanocrystals form shape with nanocrystals, nanorods or nanocubes. It was found that CuTe nanocrystals could be converted to CuInTe? by addition of an In reactant. CuInTe? nanorods were synthesized using this method.

Shape control of size-selected naked platinum nanocrystals.

Project description:Controlled growth of far-from-equilibrium-shaped nanoparticles with size selection is essential for the exploration of their unique physical and chemical properties. Shape control by wet-chemistry preparation methods produces surfactant-covered surfaces with limited understanding due to the complexity of the processes involved. Here, we report the controlled production and transformation of octahedra to tetrahedra of size-selected platinum nanocrystals with clean surfaces in an inert gas environment. Molecular dynamics simulations of the growth reveal the key symmetry-breaking atomic mechanism for this autocatalytic shape transformation, confirming the experimental conditions required. In-situ heating experiments demonstrate the relative stability of both octahedral and tetrahedral Pt nanocrystals at least up to 700 °C and that the extended surface diffusion at higher temperature transforms the nanocrystals into equilibrium shape.

Control over size, shape, and photonics of self-assembled organic nanocrystals.

Project description:The facile fabrication of free-floating organic nanocrystals (ONCs) was achieved via the kinetically controlled self-assembly of simple perylene diimide building blocks in aqueous medium. The ONCs have a thin rectangular shape, with an aspect ratio that is controlled by the content of the organic cosolvent (THF). The nanocrystals were characterized in solution by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering. The ONCs retain their structure upon drying, as was evidenced by TEM and atom force microscopy. Photophysical studies, including femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, revealed a distinct influence of the ONC morphology on their photonic properties (excitation energy transfer was observed only in the high-aspect ONCs). Convenient control over the structure and function of organic nanocrystals can enhance their utility in new and developed technologies.

Role of Acid-Base Equilibria in the Size, Shape, and Phase Control of Cesium Lead Bromide Nanocrystals.

Project description:A binary ligand system composed of aliphatic carboxylic acids and primary amines of various chain lengths is commonly employed in diverse synthesis methods for CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs). In this work, we have carried out a systematic study examining how the concentration of ligands (oleylamine and oleic acid) and the resulting acidity (or basicity) affects the hot-injection synthesis of CsPbBr3 NCs. We devise a general synthesis scheme for cesium lead bromide NCs which allows control over size, size distribution, shape, and phase (CsPbBr3 or Cs4PbBr6) by combining key insights on the acid-base interactions that rule this ligand system. Furthermore, our findings shed light upon the solubility of PbBr2 in this binary ligand system, and plausible mechanisms are suggested in order to understand the ligand-mediated phase control and structural stability of CsPbBr3 NCs.

Size control over metal-organic framework porous nanocrystals.

Project description:Porous nanocrystals of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer greater bioavailability, higher surface-to-volume ratios, superior control over MOF membrane fabrication, and enhanced guest-sorption kinetics compared to analogous bulk phases, but reliable synthesis of uniformly sized particles remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we identify the smallest and most probable sizes of known MOF nanocrystals and present an exhaustive comparative summary of nano- versus bulk-MOF syntheses. Based on critical analysis of reported size data and experimental conditions, an alternate to the LaMer model is proposed that describes nanocrystal formation as a kinetic competition between acid-base and metal-ligand reactivity. Particle growth terminates when ligands outcompete metal-ion diffusion, thereby arresting polymerization to produce kinetically trapped particle sizes. This model reconciles disparate trends in the literature and postulates that minimum particle sizes can be achieved by minimizing the relative ratios of metal-to-linker local concentrations. By identifying conditions that disfavor small nanocrystal sizes, this model also provides routes towards macroscopic MOF single crystals. A universal "seesaw" relationship between nanocrystal sizes and the concentrations of acidic surface-capping ligands provides a roadmap for achieving precise synthetic control. Best practices in synthesis, characterization, and data presentation are recommended for future investigations so that MOF nanocrystals may achieve their full potential as advanced nanomaterials.

Highly Luminescent, Size- and Shape-Tunable Copper Indium Selenide Based Colloidal Nanocrystals.

Project description:We report a simple, high-yield colloidal synthesis of copper indium selenide nanocrystals (CISe NCs) based on a silylamide-promoted approach. The silylamide anions increase the nucleation rate, which results in small-sized NCs exhibiting high luminescence and constant NC stoichiometry and crystal structure regardless of the NC size and shape. In particular, by systematically varying synthesis time and temperature, we show that the size of the CISe NCs can be precisely controlled to be between 2.7 and 7.9 nm with size distributions down to 9-10%. By introducing a specific concentration of silylamide-anions in the reaction mixture, the shape of CISe NCs can be preselected to be either spherical or tetrahedral. Optical properties of these CISe NCs span from the visible to near-infrared region with peak luminescence wavelengths of 700 to 1200 nm. The luminescence efficiency improves from 10 to 15% to record values of 50-60% by overcoating as-prepared CISe NCs with ZnSe or ZnS shells, highlighting their potential for applications such as biolabeling and solid state lighting.

Size control of arsenic trioxide nanocrystals grown in nanowells.

Project description:This paper describes a new strategy to generate nanocrystalline drugs through the precipitation of drug molecules in attoliter nanowells. We controlled the size of arsenic trioxide (ATO) nanocrystals by simply changing the concentration of ATO solution in the nanowells; particles with sizes ranging from 55 to 175 nm were formed. This approach only requires the drugs to be soluble in a solvent and thus can be broadly applicable to produce other drugs in nanocrystalline form.

Redox reaction induced Ostwald ripening for size- and shape-focusing of palladium nanocrystals.

Project description:We report here that size- and shape-focusing can be achieved through the well-known Ostwald ripening process to produce high-quality metal nanocrystals (NCs). Using Pd as an example, we show that the addition of small NCs of appropriate sizes could help in modulating the growth of larger NCs and enable excellent control over both the size and shape uniformity of the products. A detailed mechanistic study showed that the self-focusing of Pd NCs relied on a dissolution and regrowth process induced by redox reaction of HCHO. With the assistance of HCHO, injection of small sacrificial nanocrystals (SNCs), with sizes below a critical value, into larger seeds results in the dissolution of the SNCs and subsequent deposition onto the larger ones, thus allowing the formation of monodisperse Pd NCs. We have identified the critical radius of the SNCs to be ∼5.7 nm for Pd, and verified that SNCs with sizes larger than that could not effectively support the growth of larger seeds. More interestingly, since Ostwald ripening involves matter relocation, this synthetic approach could even break the self-termination growth habits of metal NCs and produce nanocrystals with sizes that are not conveniently accessible by direct growth.

Mixed AgBiS<sub>2</sub> nanocrystals for photovoltaics and photodetectors.

Project description:Heavy-metal-free colloidal nanocrystals are gaining due attention as low-cost, semiconducting materials for solution-processed optoelectronic applications. One common limitation of such materials is their limited carrier transport and trap-assisted recombination, which impede the performance of thick photoactive layers. Here we mix small-size and large-size AgBiS2 nanocrystals to judiciously favour the band alignment in photovoltaic and photodetector devices. The absorbing layer of these devices is fabricated in a gradient fashion in order to maximise charge transfer and transport. We implement this strategy to fabricate mixed AgBiS2 thin film solar cells with a power conversion of 7.3%, which significantly surpasses the performance of previously reported devices based on single-batch AgBiS2 nanocrystals. Additionally, this approach allows us to fabricate devices using thicker photoactive layers that show lower dark currents and external quantum efficiencies exceeding 40% over a broad bandwidth - covering the visible and near infrared range beyond 1 μm, thus unleashing the potential of colloidal AgBiS2 nanocrystals in photodetector applications.

Shape- and Size-Controlled Palladium Nanocrystals and Their Electrocatalytic Properties in the Oxidation of Ethanol.

Project description:Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) were synthesized in an aqueous environment via the reduction of K2PdCl4 by a surfactant under a high temperature. Highly monodisperse spherical PdNPs and multi-pod PdNPs with a controlled size ranging from 18 to 50 nm were prepared in high yields by varying the concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride. The structural and optical properties of the synthesized Pd NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectroscopy. The spherical and multi-pod PdNPs exhibited catalytic properties that were unique to their size and shape and presented efficient electrocatalytic activities toward the ethanol oxidation reaction.

Selective shape control of cerium oxide nanocrystals for photocatalytic and chemical sensing effect.

Project description:In this study, we report the precise shape control of crystalline cerium oxide, whose morphology changes between nanorods and nanoparticles in a short time. The proposed synthetic route of cerium oxide nanorods was highly dependent on the reaction time, and 10 min was determined to be the optimum synthetic condition. The cerium oxide nanorods were further converted into nanoparticles by the spontaneous assembly of cerium oxide nanoparticles into nanorods. The transmission electron microscopy results showed that the synthesized nanorods grew with high crystallinity along the 〈110〉 direction. The cerium oxide nanorods have been proven to be very efficient electron mediators for use as excellent photocatalytic materials and highly sensitive chemical sensors. The chemical sensor fabricated on a carbon paper substrate showed the high sensitivity of 1.81 μA mM-1 cm-2 and the detection limit of 6.4 μM with the correlation coefficient of 0.950.
