Project description:This data article provides experimental data obtained from the incremental dynamic shake-table testing of four single leaf unreinforced masonry (URM) walls constructed in Calcium Silicate (CS) bricks reported in "Two-way bending experimental response of URM walls subjected to combined horizontal and vertical seismic excitation" [1]. These walls were tested in the second phase of a larger experimental campaign addressing the out-of-plane (OOP) response of full-scale URM panels in two-way bending configurations at EUCENTRE, Pavia, Italy. Data corresponding to the first phase of testing for four single leaf and one cavity wall has already been made available through Tomassetti et al.[2] and the information necessary to interpret these results can be found in Graziotti et al.[3]. The walls of the tests reported in this data article were constructed in an intentionally weakened mortar but using the same Calcium Silicate (CS) bricks as Graziotti et al.[3]. The walls were also tested in boundary conditions that were not addressed in [3] and a specimen was also subjected to simultaneous horizontal OOP and vertical seismic excitation in one of the tests. Videos documenting the failure of specimens tested in both phases of the experimental campaign can be viewed online on YouTube [4].

Project description:Terrorist attacks on vulnerable structures and their individual structural members may cause considerable damage and loss of life. However, the research work on response and damage analysis of single structural components, for example, a slab to blast loadings, is limited in the literature and this is necessary for assessing its vulnerability. This study investigates the blast response and damage assessment of a two-way bending reinforced concrete (RC) slab subjected to blast loadings. Numerical modeling and analysis are carried out using the commercial finite element code LS-DYNA 971. A damage assessment criterion for the two-way bending RC slab is defined based on the original and residual uniformly distributed load-carrying capacity. Parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effects of explosive weight and explosive position on the damage mode of the two-way RC slab. Some design parameters, such as the boundary conditions and the negative reinforcement steel bar length, are also discussed. The illustrated results show that the proposed criterion can apply to all failure modes. The damage assessment results are more accurate than the ones due to the conventional deformation criterion.

Project description:The interaction of oxygen vacancies and ferroelectric domain walls is of great scientific interest because it leads to different domain-structure behaviors. Here, we use high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to study the ferroelectric domain structure and oxygen-vacancy ordering in a compressively strained Bi0.9Ca0.1FeO3-δ thin film. It was found that atomic plates, in which agglomerated oxygen vacancies are ordered, appear without any periodicity between the plates in out-of-plane and in-plane orientation. The oxygen non-stoichiometry with δ ≈ 1 in FeO2-δ planes is identical in both orientations and shows no preference. Within the plates, the oxygen vacancies form 1D channels in a pseudocubic [010] direction with a high number of vacancies that alternate with oxygen columns with few vacancies. These plates of oxygen vacancies always coincide with charged domain walls in a tail-to-tail configuration. Defects such as ordered oxygen vacancies are thereby known to lead to a pinning effect of the ferroelectric domain walls (causing application-critical aspects, such as fatigue mechanisms and countering of retention failure) and to have a critical influence on the domain-wall conductivity. Thus, intentional oxygen vacancy defect engineering could be useful for the design of multiferroic devices with advanced functionality.

Project description:Cell walls define a cell's shape in bacteria. The walls are rigid to resist large internal pressures, but remarkably plastic to adapt to a wide range of external forces and geometric constraints. Currently, it is unknown how bacteria maintain their shape. In this paper, we develop experimental and theoretical approaches and show that mechanical stresses regulate bacterial cell wall growth. By applying a precisely controllable hydrodynamic force to growing rod-shaped Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis cells, we demonstrate that the cells can exhibit two fundamentally different modes of deformation. The cells behave like elastic rods when subjected to transient forces, but deform plastically when significant cell wall synthesis occurs while the force is applied. The deformed cells always recover their shape. The experimental results are in quantitative agreement with the predictions of the theory of dislocation-mediated growth. In particular, we find that a single dimensionless parameter, which depends on a combination of independently measured physical properties of the cell, can describe the cell's responses under various experimental conditions. These findings provide insight into how living cells robustly maintain their shape under varying physical environments.

Project description:Fiber-reinforced foamed concrete (FRFC) is a lightweight material that has the potential to perform well in seismic applications due to its low density and improved mechanical properties. However, studies focused on the seismic assessment of this material are limited. In this work, U-shaped wall specimens, made of FRFC reinforced with henequen fibers and plain foamed concrete (PFC) with a density of 900 kg/m3, were subjected to shaking table tests. PFC and FRFC were characterized using compression and tension tests. FRFC exhibited enhanced mechanical properties, which were attributed to the fibers. The dynamic tests showed that U-shaped walls made of FRFC performed better than those made of PFC. The time period prior to the collapse of the FRFC U-shaped walls was longer than that of the PFC specimens, which was attributed to the enhanced specimen integrity by the fibers. Finite element simulations of the shaking table test allowed for the prediction of the stress concentration and plastic strain that may lead to the failure of the U-shaped wall. These results showed that U-shaped walls made of FRFC have the potential to perform well in seismic applications, however, these results are preliminary and further studies are needed to support the findings of this work.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Continuous interscalene blocks provide excellent analgesia after shoulder surgery. Although the safety of the ultrasound-guided in-plane approach has been touted, technical and patient factors can limit this approach. We developed a caudad-to-cephalad out-of-plane approach and hypothesized that it would decrease pain ratings due to better catheter alignment with the brachial plexus compared to the in-plane technique in a randomized, controlled study. OBJECTIVES:To compare an out-of-plane interscalene catheter technique to the in-plane technique in a randomized clinical trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS:Eighty-four patients undergoing open shoulder surgery were randomized to either the in-plane or out-of-plane ultrasound-guided continuous interscalene technique. The primary outcome was VAS pain rating at 24 hours. Secondary outcomes included pain ratings in the recovery room and at 48 hours, morphine consumption, the incidence of catheter dislodgments, procedure time, and block difficulty. Procedural data and all pain ratings were collected by blinded observers. RESULTS:There were no differences in the primary outcome of median VAS pain rating at 24 hours between the out-of-plane and in-plane groups (1.50; IQR, [0 - 4.38] vs. 1.25; IQR, [0 - 3.75]; P = 0.57). There were also no differences, respectively, between out-of-plane and in-plane median PACU pain ratings (1.0; IQR, [0 - 3.5] vs. 0.25; IQR, [0 - 2.5]; P = 0.08) and median 48-hour pain ratings (1.25; IQR, [1.25 - 2.63] vs. 0.50; IQR, [0 - 1.88]; P = 0.30). There were no differences in any other secondary endpoint. CONCLUSIONS:Our out-of-plane technique did not provide superior analgesia to the in-plane technique. It did not increase the number of complications. Our technique is an acceptable alternative in situations where the in-plane technique is difficult to perform.

Project description:Chiral spin textures in ultrathin films, such as skyrmions or chiral domain walls, are believed to offer large performance advantages in the development of novel spintronics technologies. While in-plane magnetized films have been studied extensively as media for current- and field-driven domain wall dynamics with applications in memory or logic devices, the stabilization of chiral spin textures in in-plane magnetized films has remained rare. Here we report a phase of spin structures in an in-plane magnetized ultrathin film system where out-of-plane spin orientations within domain walls are stable. Moreover, while domain walls in in-plane films are generally expected to be non-chiral, we show that right-handed spin rotations are strongly favoured in this system, due to the presence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. These results constitute a platform to explore unconventional spin dynamics and topological phenomena that may enable high-performance in-plane spin-orbitronics devices.

Project description:This paper provides information related to the sensor measurements obtained from an unreinforced masonry building subjected to incremental dynamic shake-table tests at the EUCENTRE facilities in Pavia, Italy. These tests provide a unique data set that captures at full scale the in-plane and out-of-plane behavior of unreinforced masonry walls, and the influence of flexible diaphragms on the dynamic global response of a complete building. The authors made this information available to assist in the development of analytical and numerical models, necessary to estimate the dynamic response and the engineering parameters for the performance-based seismic assessment of unreinforced masonry buildings. All recorded data (acceleration and displacement time histories) and the videos of the tests can be requested online on the EUCENTRE repository at the URL www.eucentre.it/nam-project referring to EUC-BUILD-2. Project description:Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) cines of focal liver lesions (FLLs) can be quantitatively analyzed to measure tumor perfusion on a pixel-by-pixel basis for diagnostic indication. However, CEUS cines acquired freehand and during free breathing cause nonuniform in-plane and out-of-plane motion from frame to frame. These motions create fluctuations in the time-intensity curves (TICs), reducing the accuracy of quantitative measurements. Out-of-plane motion cannot be corrected by image registration in 2-dimensional CEUS and degrades the quality of in-plane motion correction (IPMC). A 2-tier IPMC strategy and adaptive out-of-plane motion filter (OPMF) are proposed to provide a stable correction of nonuniform motion to reduce the impact of motion on quantitative analyses.A total of 22 cines of FLLs were imaged with dual B-mode and contrast specific imaging to acquire a 3-minute TIC. B-mode images were analyzed for motion, and the motion correction was applied to both B-mode and contrast images. For IPMC, the main reference frame was automatically selected for each cine, and subreference frames were selected in each respiratory cycle and sequentially registered toward the main reference frame. All other frames were sequentially registered toward the local subreference frame. Four OPMFs were developed and tested: subsample normalized correlation (NC), subsample sum of absolute differences, mean frame NC, and histogram. The frames that were most dissimilar to the OPMF reference frame using 1 of the 4 above criteria in each respiratory cycle were adaptively removed by thresholding against the low-pass filter of the similarity curve. Out-of-plane motion filter was quantitatively evaluated by an out-of-plane motion metric (OPMM) that measured normalized variance in the high-pass filtered TIC within the tumor region-of-interest with low OPMM being the goal. Results for IPMC and OPMF were qualitatively evaluated by 2 blinded observers who ranked the motion in the cines before and after various combinations of motion correction steps.Quantitative measurements showed that 2-tier IPMC and OPMF improved imaging stability. With IPMC, the NC B-mode metric increased from 0.504 ± 0.149 to 0.585 ± 0.145 over all cines (P < 0.001). Two-tier IPMC also produced better fits on the contrast-specific TIC than industry standard IPMC techniques did (P < 0.02). In-plane motion correction and OPMF were shown to improve goodness of fit for pixel-by-pixel analysis (P < 0.001). Out-of-plane motion filter reduced variance in the contrast-specific signal as shown by a median decrease of 49.8% in the OPMM. Two-tier IPMC and OPMF were also shown to qualitatively reduce motion. Observers consistently ranked cines with IPMC higher than the same cine before IPMC (P < 0.001) as well as ranked cines with OPMF higher than when they were uncorrected.The 2-tier sequential IPMC and adaptive OPMF significantly reduced motion in 3-minute CEUS cines of FLLs, thereby overcoming the challenges of drift and irregular breathing motion in long cines. The 2-tier IPMC strategy provided stable motion correction tolerant of out-of-plane motion throughout the cine by sequentially registering subreference frames that bypassed the motion cycles, thereby overcoming the lack of a nearly stationary reference point in long cines. Out-of-plane motion filter reduced apparent motion by adaptively removing frames imaged off-plane from the automatically selected OPMF reference frame, thereby tolerating nonuniform breathing motion. Selection of the best OPMF by minimizing OPMM effectively reduced motion under a wide variety of motion patterns applicable to clinical CEUS. These semiautomated processes only required user input for region-of-interest selection and can improve the accuracy of quantitative perfusion measurements.

Project description:Advancements in thin-film transistor (TFT) technology have extended to electronics that can withstand extreme bending or even folding. Although the use of ultrathin plastic substrates has achieved considerable advancement towards this end, free-standing ultrathin plastics inevitably suffer from mechanical instability and are very difficult to handle during TFT fabrication. Here, in addition to the use of a 1.5??m-thick polyimide (PI) substrate, a 1.5??m-thick PI film is also deposited on top of the TFT devices to ensure that the devices are located at the neutral plane of the two PI films for high folding stability. For mechanical support during TFT fabrication up to the deposition of the top PI film, the PI substrate is spin coated on top of a carrier glass that is coated with a mixture of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO). The mixture of CNT and GO facilitates mechanical detachment of the neutral plane (NP) TFTs from the carrier glass before they are transferred to a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate as islands. Being located in the neutral bending plane, the NP TFT can be transferred to the PDMS without performance degradation and exhibit excellent mechanical stability after stretching the PDMS substrate up to a 25% elastic elongation.
