Where should we look to understand the origin of inequality? I propose an unusual window of evidence-modern societies. I hypothesize that evidence for the origin of inequality is encoded in the institutional structure of industrial societies. To test this idea, I use a model to project modern trends into the past. Project description:The faculty job market plays a fundamental role in shaping research priorities, educational outcomes, and career trajectories among scientists and institutions. However, a quantitative understanding of faculty hiring as a system is lacking. Using a simple technique to extract the institutional prestige ranking that best explains an observed faculty hiring network-who hires whose graduates as faculty-we present and analyze comprehensive placement data on nearly 19,000 regular faculty in three disparate disciplines. Across disciplines, we find that faculty hiring follows a common and steeply hierarchical structure that reflects profound social inequality. Furthermore, doctoral prestige alone better predicts ultimate placement than a U.S. News & World Report rank, women generally place worse than men, and increased institutional prestige leads to increased faculty production, better faculty placement, and a more influential position within the discipline. These results advance our ability to quantify the influence of prestige in academia and shed new light on the academic system.

Project description:Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico has been the focus of much recent archaeological research on Pueblo groups who lived during the 9th through 12th centuries in the American Southwest. Here, we examine variation in mortuary patterns in the canyon, focusing in particular on one mortuary crypt, to address questions of social differentiation and the chronology of important sociopolitical processes. Based on new radiocarbon dates as well as reanalysis of the stratigraphy and spatial distribution of materials in the mortuary crypt, we conclude that significant social differentiation began in Chaco ca. 150-200 y earlier than suggested by previous research. We argue that social inequality was sanctified and legitimized by linking people to founders, ancestors, and cosmological forces.

Project description:One of the fundamental problems in cognitive science is how humans categorize the visible color spectrum. The empirical evidence of the existence of universal or recurrent patterns in color naming across cultures is paralleled by the observation that color names begin to be used by individual cultures in a relatively fixed order. The origin of this hierarchy is largely unexplained. Here we resort to multiagent simulations, where a population of individuals, subject to a simple perceptual constraint shared by all humans, namely the human Just Noticeable Difference, categorizes and names colors through a purely cultural negotiation in the form of language games. We found that the time needed for a population to reach consensus on a color name depends on the region of the visible color spectrum. If color spectrum regions are ranked according to this criterion, a hierarchy with [red, (magenta)-red], [violet], [green/yellow], [blue], [orange], and [cyan], appearing in this order, is recovered, featuring an excellent quantitative agreement with the empirical observations of the WCS. Our results demonstrate a clear possible route to the emergence of hierarchical color categories, confirming that the theoretical modeling in this area has now attained the required maturity to make significant contributions to the ongoing debates concerning language universals.

Project description:Replication origins in a genome are inherently different in their base sequence and in their response to temporal and cell cycle regulation signals for DNA replication. To investigate the chromosomal determinants that influence the efficiency of initiation of DNA replication genome-wide, we made use of a reverse strategy originally used for the isolation of replication initiation mutants in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In yeast, replication origins isolated from chromosomes support the autonomous replication of plasmids. These replication origins, whether in the context of a chromosome or a plasmid, will initiate efficiently in wild-type cells but show a dramatically contrasted efficiency of activation in mutants defective in the early steps of replication initiation. Serial passages of a genomic library of autonomously replicating sequences (ARSs) in such a mutant allowed us to select for constitutively active ARSs. We found a hierarchy of preferential initiation of ARSs that correlates with local transcription patterns. This preferential usage is enhanced in mutants defective in the assembly of the prereplication complex (pre-RC) but not in mutants defective in the activation of the pre-RC. Our findings are consistent with an interference of local transcription with the assembly of the pre-RC at a majority of replication origins.

Project description:The structural hierarchy exhibited by materials on more than one length scale can play a major part in determining bulk material properties. Understanding the hierarchical structure can lead to new materials with physical properties tailored for specific applications. We have used a combined experimental and phase-field modeling approach to explore such a hierarchical structure at nanoscale for enhanced coarsening resistance of ordered γ' precipitates in an experimental, multicomponent, high-refractory nickel-base superalloy. The hierarchical microstructure formed experimentally in this alloy is composed of a γ matrix with γ' precipitates that contain embedded, spherical γ precipitates, which do not directionally coarsen during high-temperature annealing but do delay coarsening of the larger γ' precipitates. Chemical mapping via atom probe tomography suggests that the supersaturation of Co, Ru, and Re in the γ' phase is the driving force for the phase separation, leading to the formation of this hierarchical microstructure. Representative phase-field modeling highlights the importance of larger γ' precipitates to promote stability of the embedded γ phase and to delay coarsening of the encompassing γ' precipitates. Our results suggest that the hierarchical material design has the potential to influence the high-temperature stability of precipitate strengthened metallic materials.

Project description:The rapid increase of wealth inequality in the past few decades is a most disturbing social and economic issue of our time. In order to control, and even reverse that surge, its origin and underlying mechanisms should be revealed. One of the challenges in studying these mechanisms is to incorporate realistic individual dynamics in the population level in a self-consistent manner. Our theoretical approach meets the challenge by using interacting multi-agent master-equations to model the dynamics of wealth inequality. The model is solved using stochastic multi-agent iterated maps. Taking into account growth rate, return on capital, private savings and economic mobility, we were able to capture the historical dynamics of wealth inequality in the United States during the course of the 20th century. We show that the fraction of capital income in the national income and the fraction of private savings are the critical factors that govern the wealth inequality dynamics. In addition, we found that economic mobility plays a crucial role in wealth accumulation. Notably, we found that the major decrease in private savings since the 1980s could be associated primarily with the recent surge in wealth inequality and if nothing changes in this respect we predict further increase in wealth inequality in the future. However, the 2007-08 financial crisis brought an opportunity to restrain the wealth inequality surge by increasing private savings. If this trend continues, it may lead to prevention, and even reversing, of the ongoing inequality surge.

Project description:Ecological breakdown and economic inequality are among the largest contemporary global challenges, and the issues are thoroughly entangled - as they have been throughout the history of civilisations. Yet, the global economy continues toward ecological crises, and inequalities remain far higher than citizens believe to be fair. Here, we explore the role of inequality, alongside traditional drivers of ecological impacts, in determining global energy requirements for providing universal decent living. We consider scenarios from fair inequality - where inequalities mirror public ideals - through a fairly unequal world, to one with a super-rich global elite. The energy-costs of inequality appear far more significant than population: even fair levels increase the energy required to provide universal decent living by 40%, and a super-rich global 1% could consume as much energy as would providing decent living to 1.7 billion. We finish by arguing that total population remains important nonetheless, but for reasons beyond ecological impacts.

Project description:Basic principles of structural and functional requirements of photosynthetic energy conversion in hierarchically organized machineries are reviewed. Blueprints of photosynthesis, the energetic basis of virtually all life on Earth, can serve the basis for constructing artificial light energy-converting molecular devices. In photosynthetic organisms, the conversion of light energy into chemical energy takes places in highly organized fine-tunable systems with structural and functional hierarchy. The incident photons are absorbed by light-harvesting complexes, which funnel the excitation energy into reaction centre (RC) protein complexes containing redox-active chlorophyll molecules; the primary charge separations in the RCs are followed by vectorial transport of charges (electrons and protons) in the photosynthetic membrane. RCs possess properties that make their use in solar energy-converting and integrated optoelectronic systems feasible. Therefore, there is a large interest in many laboratories and in the industry toward their use in molecular devices. RCs have been bound to different carrier matrices, with their photophysical and photochemical activities largely retained in the nano-systems and with electronic connection to conducting surfaces. We show examples of RCs bound to carbon-based materials (functionalized and non-functionalized single- and multiwalled carbon nanotubes), transitional metal oxides (ITO) and conducting polymers and porous silicon and characterize their photochemical activities. Recently, we adapted several physical and chemical methods for binding RCs to different nanomaterials. It is generally found that the P(+)(QAQB)(-) charge pair, which is formed after single saturating light excitation is stabilized after the attachment of the RCs to the nanostructures, which is followed by slow reorganization of the protein structure. Measuring the electric conductivity in a direct contact mode or in electrochemical cell indicates that there is an electronic interaction between the protein and the inorganic carrier matrices. This can be a basis of sensing element of bio-hybrid device for biosensor and/or optoelectronic applications.

Project description:In this work, a novel fuzzy decision making technique namely trapezoidal fuzzy Best-Worst method (fuzzy BWM) is developed which is based on Best-Worst method (BWM) and Trapezoidal fuzzy number. The real motive behind our work is to take a broad view of the existing fuzzy BWM based on triangular fuzzy number by trapezoidal fuzzy number. Also, we have presented a new hybrid MCDM technique called as Trapezoidal fuzzy Best Worst Analytic Hierarchy based on proposed trapezoidal fuzzy BWM and existing trapezoidal fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). BWM approach is employed in evaluating the PV of considering criteria and trapezoidal fuzzy AHP is used to assess the local priority vale (PV) of considering alternatives (or indicators) of a decision problem. Moreover it used to identify the most significant alternative which is responsible for performance efficiency of a hydro power plant under climatic scenario. From the result, it is undoubtedly found that hydraulic had is most responsible indicator. Further, the CR (consistency ratio) value which is determined by our proposed trapezoidal fuzzy BWM is less than that of existing BWM and fuzzy BWM techniques. Finally, we have validated our result by comparative study, scenario analysis and sensitivity analysis.

Project description:The T-loop motif is an important recurrent RNA structural building block consisting of a U-turn sub-motif and a UA trans Watson-Crick/Hoogsteen base pair. In the presence of a hairpin stem, the UA non-canonical base pair becomes part of the UA-handle motif. To probe the hierarchical organization and energy landscape of the T-loop, we performed replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulations of the T-loop in isolation and as part of a hairpin. Our simulations reveal that the isolated T-loop adopts coil conformers stabilized by base stacking. The T-loop hairpin shows a highly rugged energy landscape featuring multiple local minima with a transition state for folding consisting of partially zipped states. The U-turn displays a high conformational flexibility both when the T-loop is in isolation and as part of a hairpin. On the other hand, the stability of the UA non-canonical base pair is enhanced in the presence of the UA-handle. This motif is apparently a key component for stabilizing the T-loop, while the U-turn is mostly involved in long-range interaction. Our results suggest that the stability and folding of small RNA motifs are highly dependent on local context.
