We discovered that <i>Enterococcus faecium</i> (<i>E. faecium</i>), a ubiquitous commensal bacterium, and its secreted peptidoglycan hydrolase (SagA) were sufficient to enhance intestinal barrier function and pathogen tolerance, but the precise biochemical mechanism was unknown.
