A New Species of Microphysogobio (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from Guangxi Province, Southern China.

ABSTRACT: Shih-Pin Huang, Yahui Zhao, I-Shiung Chen, and Kwang-Tsao Shao (2017) Microphysogobio zhangi n. sp., a new cyprinid species is described from Guangxi Province, China. Morphological and molecular evidence based on mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome b (Cyt b) sequence were used for comparing this new species and other related species. The phylogenetic tree topology revealed that this new species is closely related to M. elongatus and M. fukiensis. We also observed the existence of a peculiar trans-river gene ow in the Pearl River and the Yangtze River populations, and speculated that it was caused by an ancient arti cial canal, the Lingqu Canal, which forming a pathway directly connecting these two rivers.

Description of A New Species of the Gudgeon Genus Microphysogobio Mori 1934 (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from Guangdong Province, Southern China.

Project description:Shih-Pin Huang, I-Shiung Chen, Yahui Zhao, and Kwang-Tsao Shao (2018) Microphysogobio luhensis n. sp., a new cyprinid species, is described from the Rongjiang River in eastern Guangdong Province, China. Morphological characters and molecular evidence based on mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome b (Cyt b) and Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences were used to compare this new species with other related species from mainland China, Vietnam and Taiwan. The present molecular evidences revealed that this new species is closely related to M. kachekensis and M. yunnanensis. However, these three species can be well distinguished based on the number of small pearl-like papillae on their inside papillae, lip papillae shape, barbel length, barbel width and color pattern. Furthermore, the morphometric comparison between M. kachekensis and the poorly known species M. yunnanensis is also discussed in this study for the first time. In addition, a diagnostic key to all 14 valid species of Microphysogobio from southern mainland China, Hainan Island and Taiwan is also provided.

Oreonectesdamingshanensis (Cypriniformes, Nemacheilidae), a new species of stream fish from Guangxi, Southwest China.

Project description:In this work, a new species of the genus Oreonectes is described, named Oreonectesdamingshanensis Yu, Luo, Lan, Xiao & Zhou, sp. nov., collected from the Damingshan Mountains of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Phylogenetic trees constructed based on the mitochondrial Cyt b showed that the new species represents an independent evolutionary lineage, with uncorrected genetic distances (p-distance) from congeners ranging from 6.1% to 8.9%. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from five other species of the genus by a combination of characters. The discovery of this new species raises the number of known species of Oreonectes from five to six. Our study suggests that O.platycephalus may be a complex containing multiple species and that previously recorded areas need to be further delimited and reevaluated.

Project description:Sinocyclocheiluslongicornussp. nov. is described from the Pearl River basin in Hongguo Town, Panzhou City, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. Based on the presence of the long horn-like structure on the back of the head, Sinocyclocheiluslongicornussp. nov. is assigned to the Sinocyclocheilusangularis species group. A new loach species of the genus Oreonectes (Teleostei, Cypriniformes, Nemacheilidae) from Guangxi, China.

Project description:A new loach species, Oreonectesandongensissp. nov. is described from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. The new species can be differentiated from other members of the genus by combinations of characters: a developed posterior chamber of the swim bladder, 13-14 branched caudal-fin rays, 8-16 lateral-line pores, body width 12-15% of standard length (SL), interorbital width 42-47% of head length (HL), and caudal peduncle length 11-16% of SL. Bayesian inference phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial Cyt b provided strong support for validity of O.andongensissp. nov. (uncorrected p-distance 6.0-7.5%).

Sequence identification and phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial genome of Microphysogobio kiatingensis (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae).

Project description:Microphysogobio kiatingensis is endemic freshwater fish of China and mainly distributed in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The complete mitogenome of M. kiatingensis was first determined by using the next-generation sequencing in present study. The circular mitogenome followed the expected pattern for vertebrates, being 16,603?bp in length. It contained 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, one displacement loop (D-loop) locus and an origin of replication on the light-strand (OL). Most of the genes are encoded on the heavy strand except ND6 and eight tRNA genes. The overall base composition was 30.78% A, 26.09% T, 26.59% C, 16.54% G, with 56.87% AT. Thirteen intergenic spacers and nine gene overlaps exist in the complete mitochondrial genome. Phylogenetic analysis based on the tandem 13 coding protein genes nucleotide sequences with two different methods (maximum likelihood and neighbour-joining analysis) indicated that M. kiatingensis was grouped in one clade with the same genus. The complete mitogenome of M. kiatingensis can provide a useful data for the further research in Gobioninae. Meanwhile, it also provides help for biological genetics and classification of species.

Complete mitochondrial genome of freshwater fish, Microphysogobio jeoni (Actinopterygii, Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae), from South Korea.

Project description:In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of cyprinid freshwater fish, Microphysogobio jeoni, belonging to the subfamily Gobioninae in the order Cypriniformes. The complete mitogenome of M. jeoni was 16,602 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs. The gene order was identical with other Microphysogobio species. The overall nucleotide composition of M. jeoni was A + T: 56.1% and G + C: 43.9%, with slightly AT bias. In the phylogenetic tree, M. jeoni and other congeneric species clearly formed a monophyletic clade, and each species distinguished against each other well.
