Rhodium(III) Complexes Featuring Coordinated CF₃ Appendages.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis and characterisation of a homologous series of rhodium 2,2'-biphenyl complexes featuring intramolecular dative bonding of the nominally inert and weakly coordinating trifluoromethyl group are described. Presence of these interactions is evidenced in the solid state using X-ray diffraction, with Rh-F contacts of 2.36-2.45?Å, and in solution using NMR spectroscopy, through hindered C-CF₃ bond rotation and the presence of time-averaged ¹ J_RhF and ² J_PF coupling.

Project description:We present the development of ligands featuring the unconventional hydrogen bond donor, -CF2H, within a metal's secondary coordination sphere. When metalated with palladium, o-CF2H-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline provides highly directed H-bonding interactions with Pd-coordinated substrates. Spectroscopic and computational analyses with a series of X-type ligand acceptors (-F, -Cl, -Br, -OR) establish the H-bonding interaction strength for the -CF2H group (∼3 kcal/mol). The synthesis of Pd0/Ni0 complexes and subsequent coupling (Ni) highlight the unique reductive and base compatibility of the -CF2H hydrogen bond donor group.

Ligand-Controlled Reactivity and Cytotoxicity of Cyclometalated Rhodium(III) Complexes.

Project description:We report the synthesis, characterisation and cytotoxicity of six cyclometalated rhodium(III) complexes [CpXRh(C^N)Z]0/+, in which CpX = Cp*, Cpph, or Cpbiph, C^N = benzo[h]quinoline, and Z = chloride or pyridine. Three x-ray crystal structures showing the expected "piano-stool" configurations have been determined. The chlorido complexes hydrolysed faster in aqueous solution, also reacted preferentially with 9-ethyl guanine or glutathione compared to their pyridine analogues. The 1-biphenyl-2,3,4,5,-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl complex [CpbiphRh(benzo[h]quinoline)Cl] (3a) was the most efficient catalyst in coenzyme reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidation to NAD+ and induced an elevated level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in A549 human lung cancer cells. The pyridine complex [CpbiphRh(benzo[h]quinoline)py]+ (3b) was the most potent against A549 lung and A2780 ovarian cancer cell lines, being 5-fold more active than cisplatin towards A549 cells, and acted as a ROS scavenger. This work highlights a ligand-controlled strategy to modulate the reactivity and cytotoxicity of cyclometalated rhodium anticancer complexes.

Theoretical insight into OH- and Cl-initiated oxidation of CF3OCH(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2H &fate of CF3OC(X•)(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2X• radicals (X=O, O2).

Project description:In this study, the mechanistic and kinetic analysis for reactions of CF3OCH(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2H with OH radicals and Cl atoms have been performed at the CCSD(T)//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Kinetic isotope effects for reactions CF3OCH(CF3)2/CF3OCD(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2H/CF3OCF2CF2D with OH and Cl were estimated so as to provide the theoretical estimation for future laboratory investigation. All rate constants, computed by canonical variational transition state theory (CVT) with the small-curvature tunneling correction (SCT), are in reasonable agreement with the limited experimental data. Standard enthalpies of formation for the species were also calculated. Atmospheric lifetime and global warming potentials (GWPs) of the reaction species were estimated, the large lifetimes and GWPs show that the environmental impact of them cannot be ignored. The organic nitrates can be produced by the further oxidation of CF3OC(•)(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2• in the presence of O2 and NO. The subsequent decomposition pathways of CF3OC(O•)(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2O• radicals were studied in detail. The derived Arrhenius expressions for the rate coefficients over 230-350?K are: k T(1)?=?5.00?×?10-24T3.57 exp(-849.73/T), k T(2)?=?1.79?×?10-24T4.84 exp(-4262.65/T), kT(3)?=?1.94?×?10-24 T4.18 exp(-884.26/T), and k T(4)?=?9.44?×?10-28T5.25 exp(-913.45/T) cm3 molecule-1 s-1.

Dinuclear Au(I), Au(II) and Au(III) Complexes with (CF2 )n Chains: Insights into The Role of Aurophilic Interactions in the Au(I) Oxidation.

Project description:New dinuclear Au(I), Au(II) and Au(III) complexes containing (CF2 )n bridging chains were obtained. Metallomacrocycles [Au2 {μ-(CF2 )4 }{μ-diphosphine}] show an uncommon figure-eight structure, the helicity inversion barrier of which is influenced by aurophilic interactions and steric constraints imposed by the diphosphine. Halogenation of LAu(CF2 )4 AuL (L=PPh3 , PMe3 , (dppf)1/2 , (binap)1/2 ) gave [Au(II)]2 species, some of which display unprecedented folded structures with Au-Au bonds. Aurophilic interactions facilitate this oxidation process by preorganizing the starting [Au(I)]2 complexes and lowering its redox potential. The obtained [Au(II)]2 complexes undergo thermal or photochemical elimination of R3 PAuX to give Au(III) perfluorinated auracycles. Evidence of a radical mechanism for these decomposition reactions was obtained.

Ortho-aryl substituted DPEphos ligands: rhodium complexes featuring C-H anagostic interactions and B-H agostic bonds.

Project description:The synthesis of new Schrock-Osborn Rh(i) pre-catalysts with ortho-substituted DPEphos ligands, [Rh(DPEphos-R)(NBD)][BArF 4] [R = Me, OMe, iPr; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3], is described. Along with the previously reported R = H variant, variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that these all have axial (C-H)⋯Rh anagostic interactions relative to the d8 pseudo square planar metal centres, that also result in corresponding downfield chemical shifts. Analysis by NBO, QTAIM and NCI methods shows these to be only very weak C-H⋯Rh bonding interactions, the magnitudes of which do not correlate with the observed chemical shifts. Instead, as informed by Scherer's approach, it is the topological positioning of the C-H bond with regard to the metal centre that is important. For [Rh(DPEphos-iPr)(NBD)][BArF 4] addition of H2 results in a Rh(iii) iPr-C-H activated product, [Rh(κ3,σ-P,O,P-DPEphos-iPr')(H)][BArF 4]. This undergoes H/D exchange with D2 at the iPr groups, reacts with CO or NBD to return Rh(i) products, and reaction with H3B·NMe3/tert-butylethene results in a dehydrogenative borylation to form a complex that shows both a non-classical B-H⋯Rh 3c-2e agostic bond and a C-H⋯Rh anagostic interaction at the same metal centre.

Reactivity of Xantphos-Type Rhodium Complexes Towards SF4 : SF3 Versus SF2 Complex Generation.

Project description:S-F-bond activation of sulfur tetrafluoride at [Rh(Cl)(tBu xanPOP)] (1; tBu xanPOP=9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis-(di-tert-butylphosphino)-xanthene) led to the formation of the cationic complex [Rh(F)(Cl)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][SF5 ] (2 a) together with trans-[Rh(Cl)(F)2 (tBu xanPOP)] (3) and cis-[Rh(Cl)2 (F)(tBu xanPOP)] (4) which both could also be obtained by the reaction of SF5 Cl with 1. In contrast to that, the conversion of SF4 at the methyl complex [Rh(Me)(tBu xanPOP)] (5) gave the isolable and room-temperature stable cationic λ4 -trifluorosulfanyl complex [Rh(Me)(SF3 )(tBu xanPOP)][SF5 ] (6). Treatment of 6 with the Lewis acids BF3 or AsF5 produced the dicationic difluorosulfanyl complex [Rh(Me)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][BF4 ]2 (8 a) or [Rh(Me)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][AsF6 ]2 (8 b), respectively. Refluorination of 8 a was possible with the use of dimethylamine giving [Rh(Me)(SF3 )(tBu xanPOP)][BF4 ] (9). A reaction of 6 with trichloroisocyanuric acid (TClCA) gave the fluorido complex [Rh(F)(Cl)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][Cl] (2 b) together with chloromethane and SF5 Cl.

Cleavage of cluster iron-sulfide bonds in cyclophane-coordinated FenSm complexes.

Project description:Reaction of the tri(μ-sulfido)triiron(iii) tris(β-diketiminate) cyclophane complex, Fe3S3LEt/Me (1), or of the di(μ-sulfido)diiron(iii) complex Fe2S2HLEt/Me (5), with the related tri(bromide)triiron(ii) complex Fe3Br3LEt/Me (2) results in electron and ligand redistribution to yield the mixed-ligand multiiron complexes, including Fe3Br2SLEt/Me (3) and Fe2Br2SHLEt/Me (4). The cleavage and redistribution observed in these complexes is reminiscent of necessary Fe-S bond cleavage for substrate activation in nitrogenase enzymes, and provides a new perspective on the lability of Fe-S bonds in FeS clusters.

Rhodium(III) and Iridium(III) Complexes of a NHC-Based Macrocycle: Persistent Weak Agostic Interactions and Reactions with Dihydrogen.

Project description:The synthesis and characterization of five-coordinate rhodium(III) and iridium(III) 2,2'-biphenyl complexes [M(CNC-12)(biph)][BArF 4] (M = Rh (1a), Ir (1b)), featuring the macrocyclic lutidine- and NHC-based pincer ligand CNC-12 are reported. In the solid state these complexes are notable for the adoption of weak ?-agostic interactions that are characterized by M···H-C contacts of ca. 3.0 Å by X-ray crystallography and ?(CH) bands of reduced wavenumber by ATR IR spectroscopy. Remarkably, these interactions persist on dissolution and were observed at room temperature using NMR spectroscopy (CD2Cl2) and solution-phase IR spectroscopy (CCl4). The associated metrics point toward a stronger M···H-C interaction in the iridium congener, and this conclusion is borne out on interrogation of 1 in silico using DFT-based NBO and QTAIM analyses. Reaction of 1 with dihydrogen resulted in hydrogenolysis of the biaryl and formation of fluxional hydride complexes, whose ground state formulations as [Rh(CNC-12)H2][BArF 4] (2a?) and [Ir(CNC-12)H2(H2)][BArF 4] (2b?) are proposed on the basis of inversion recovery and variable-temperature NMR experiments, alongside a computational analysis. Reactions of 1 and 2 with carbon monoxide help support their respective structural properties.

Kinetics and mechanism of sequential ring methyl C-H activation in cyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) complexes.

Project description:We have studied activation of the methyl C-H bonds in the cyclopentadienyl ligands of half-sandwich Rh(III) complexes [η5-CpXRh(N,N')Cl]+ by observing the dependence of sequential H/D exchange on variations in CpX = Cp* (complexes 1 and 2), Me4PhCp (CpXPh, 3) or Me4PhPhCp (CpXPhPh, 4), and chelated ligand N,N' (bpy, 1; phen, 2-4). H/D exchange was fastest in d4-MeOD (t1/2 = 10 min, 37 °C, complex 1), no H/D exchange was observed in DMSO/D2O, and d4-MeOD enhanced the rate in CD3CN. The proposed Rh(I)-fulvene intermediate was trapped by [4 + 2] Diels-Alder reactions with conjugated dienes and characterized. The Rh(I) oxidation state was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Influence of solvent on the mechanisms of activation and Diels-Alder adduct formation was modelled using DFT calculations with the CAM-B3LYP functional and CEP-31 g basis set, and influence on the reaction profile of the dimiine ligand and phenyl substituent using the larger qzvp basis set. The Rh(III)-OH intemediate is stabilised by H-bonding with methanol and a Cp* CH3 hydrogen. The Rh(I)(Me4fulvene) species, stabilised by interaction of methanol with a coordinated water, again by two H-bonds H2O-HOMe (1.49 Å) and fulvene CH2 (1.94 Å), arises from synchronous transfer of the methanol OH proton to a Rh(III)-OH ligand and Cp* methyl hydrogen to the methanol oxygen. Additionally, the observed trend in catalytic activity for complexes 1-4 was reproduced by DFT calculations. These complexes form a novel class of catalytic molecular motors with a tunable rate of operation that can be stalled in a given state. They provide a basis for elucidation of the effects of ligand design on the contributions of electronic, rotational and vibrational energies to each step in the reaction pathway at the atomic level, consideration of which will enhance the design principles for the next generation of molecular machines.

PAH/PAH(CF3 )n Donor/Acceptor Charge-Transfer Complexes in Solution and in Solid-State Co-Crystals.

Project description:A solution, solid-state, and computational study is reported of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon PAH/PAH(CF3 )n donor/acceptor (D/A) charge-transfer complexes that involve six PAH(CF3 )n acceptors with known gas-phase electron affinities that range from 2.11(2) to 2.805(15) eV and four PAH donors, including seven CT co-crystal X-ray structures that exhibit hexagonal arrays of mixed π-stacks with 1/1, 1/2, or 2/1 D/A stoichiometries (PAH=anthracene, azulene, coronene, perylene, pyrene, triphenylene; n=5, 6). These are the first D/A CT complexes with PAH(CF3 )n acceptors to be studied in detail. The nine D/A combinations were chosen to allow several structural and electronic comparisons to be made, providing new insights about controlling D/A interactions and the structures of CT co-crystals. The comparisons include, among others, CT complexes of the same PAH(CF3 )n acceptor with four PAH donors and CT complexes of the same donor with four PAH(CF3 )n acceptors. All nine CT complexes exhibit charge-transfer bands in solution with λmax between 467 and 600 nm. A plot of E(λmax ) versus [IE(donor)-EA(acceptor)] for the nine CT complexes studied is linear with a slope of 0.72±0.03 eV eV-1 . This plot is the first of its kind for CT complexes with structurally related donors and acceptors for which precise experimental gas-phase IEs and EAs are known. It demonstrates that conclusions based on the common assumption that the slope of a CT E(λmax ) versus [IE-EA] plot is unity may be incorrect in at least some cases and should be reconsidered.
