The brown planthopper, <i>Nilaparvata lugens</i>, and the white-backed planthopper, <i>Sogatella furcifera</i>, are significant pest insects for rice. Both species are able to survive year-round in northern Vietnam's Red River Delta, which includes a large rice-producing region.
