Investigation of coal and gas outburst risk by microseismic monitoring.

ABSTRACT: In order to improve the monitoring and prediction of coal and gas outburst, this paper proposes a new method for dynamic regional prediction of coal and gas outburst using microseismic (MS) monitoring. The theoretical basis of this method is presented. An index evaluation system was established and applied, based on which field tests were carried out in a coal mine. The results show that seismic monitoring with frequency and energy indexes can obtain good results for mining disturbance intensity monitoring and geological structure detection; the regional stress distribution detected by seismic wave tomography is consistent with the theoretical stress field, making its use of great significance for optimizing coal and gas outburst drilling parameters and improving overall tunneling efficiency. This approach overcomes the limitations of traditional methods in the temporal and spatial dimensions and realizes dynamic and continuous monitoring of coal and gas outburst-prone areas.

Coal and gas outburst prediction based on data augmentation and neuroevolution.

Project description:Coal and gas outburst (CGO) is a complicated natural disaster in underground coal mine production. In constructing smart mines, predicting CGO risks efficiently and accurately is necessary. This paper proposes a CGO risk prediction method based on data augmentation and a neuroevolution algorithm, denoted as ANEAT. First, sample features are applied to the transfer function using a pointwise intensity transformation to obtain new feature samples. It solves the problems of imbalanced data samples and insufficient diversity. Second, the feature importance score sorting and Sparse PCA dimensionality reduction are performed on the data-augmented samples. It provides the initial genome code for the evolutionary neural network. Finally, an evolutionary neural network for CGO prediction is constructed through population initialization, fitness evaluation, species differentiation, genome mutation, and recombination. The optimal phenotype is obtained in the evolutionary generations. In the experiment, we verify the effectiveness of ANEAT from multiple aspects such as data augmentation effectiveness analysis, deep learning model comparison, swarm intelligence optimization algorithm comparison, and other method comparisons. The results show that the MAE, RMSE, and EVAR indexes of ANEAT on the test set are 0.0816, 0.1322, and 0.8972, respectively. It has the optimal CGO prediction effect. ANEAT realizes the high-precision mapping of feature parameters and outburst risk with a lightweight network architecture, which can be well applied to CGO prediction.

A novel combined intelligent algorithm prediction model for the risk of the coal and gas outburst.

Project description:The mechanism of coal and gas outburst disasters is perplexing, and the evaluation methods of outburst disasters based on various sensitive indicators often have some imprecision and fuzziness. With the concept of accurate and intelligent mining in coal mines proposed in China, selecting quantifiable parameters for machine learning risk prediction can avoid the deviation caused by human subjectivity, and improve the accuracy of coal and gas outburst prediction. Aiming at the shortcomings of the support vector machine (SVM) such as low noise resistance and being prone to be influenced by parameters easily, this research proposed a prediction method based on a grey wolf optimizer to optimize the support vector machine (GWO-SVM). To coordinate the global and local optimization ability of the GWO, Tent Chaotic Mapping and DLH strategies were introduced to improve the optimization ability of the GWO and reduce the local optimal probability. The improved prediction model IGWO-SVM was used to predict the coal and gas outburst. The results showed that this model has faster training speed and higher classification prediction accuracy than the SVM and GWO-SVM models, which the accuracy rate reaching 100%. Finally, to obtain the correlation between the parameters of the coal and gas outburst prediction parameters, the random forest algorithm was used for training, and the three parameters with the highest feature importance were selected to rebuild the data set for machine learning. The accuracy of the IGWO-SVM outburst prediction model based on Random Forest was still 100%. Therefore, even if some prediction parameters are missing, the outburst can still be effectively predicted by using the RF-IGWO-SVM model, which is beneficial for the model application and underground safety management.

Propagation characteristics of pulverized coal and gas two-phase flow during an outburst.

Project description:Coal and gas outbursts are dynamic failures that can involve the ejection of thousands tons of pulverized coal, as well as considerable volumes of gas, into a limited working space within a short period. The two-phase flow of gas and pulverized coal that occurs during an outburst can lead to fatalities and destroy underground equipment. This article examines the interaction mechanism between pulverized coal and gas flow. Based on the role of gas expansion energy in the development stage of outbursts, a numerical simulation method is proposed for investigating the propagation characteristics of the two-phase flow. This simulation method was verified by a shock tube experiment involving pulverized coal and gas flow. The experimental and simulated results both demonstrate that the instantaneous ejection of pulverized coal and gas flow can form outburst shock waves. These are attenuated along the propagation direction, and the volume fraction of pulverized coal in the two-phase flow has significant influence on attenuation of the outburst shock wave. As a whole, pulverized coal flow has a negative impact on gas flow, which makes a great loss of large amounts of initial energy, blocking the propagation of gas flow. According to comparison of numerical results for different roadway types, the attenuation effect of T-type roadways is best. In the propagation of shock wave, reflection and diffraction of shock wave interact through the complex roadway types.

Investigation of microseismic signal denoising using an improved wavelet adaptive thresholding method.

Project description:There are high- and low-frequency noise signals in a microseismic signal that can lead to the distortion and submersion of an effective waveform. At present, effectively removing high- and low-frequency noise without losing the effective signal of local waveform spikes remains a challenge. This work addresses this issue with an improved wavelet adaptive thresholding method. Because a denoised signal conceptually approximates the minimum error, a dynamic selection model is established for the optimal threshold. On this basis, an adaptive correction factor aj is proposed to reflect the noise intensity, which uses the 1/2 power of the ratio of the median absolute value to the amplitude of the monitoring data to reflect the noise intensity of the wavelet detail signal and corrects the size of the denoising scale. Finally, the performance of the improved method is quantitatively evaluated in terms of the denoising quality and efficiency using the signal-to-noise ratio, root-mean-square error, sample entropy and running time.

Experimental investigation of the creep damage evolution of coal rock around gas extraction boreholes at different water contents.

Project description:The creep process of the coal rock around the extraction boreholes under stress-water coupling is an important factor affecting the stability of the boreholes. To study the influence of the water content of perimeter of the coal rock around the boreholes on its creep damage, a creep intrinsic model considering water damage was established by introducing the plastic element model from the Nishihara model. To study the steady-state strain and damage evolution of coal rocks containing pores, and verify the practicality of the model, a graded loading water-bearing creep test was designed to explore the role of different water-bearing conditions in the creep process. The following conclusions were obtained: 1) water has a physical erosion and softening water wedge effect on the perimeter of the coal rock around the boreholes, which affects the loading axial strain and displacement of the perforated specimens; 2) an increase in water content reduces the time taken for perforated specimens to enter the creep phase, making the accelerated creep phase come earlier; 3) the parameters of the water damage model are considered to be exponentially related with the water content. The experimental data are similar to the results of the model parameters, and the model shows some practicality; 4) the damage variables in the accelerated creep phase increase rapidly throughout the creep process, leading to local instability in the borehole. The findings of the study provide important theoretical implications for the study of instability in gas extraction boreholes.

Unveiling the signals from extremely noisy microseismic data for high-resolution hydraulic fracturing monitoring.

Project description:Microseismic method is an essential technique for monitoring the dynamic status of hydraulic fracturing during the development of unconventional reservoirs. However, one of the challenges in microseismic monitoring is that those seismic signals generated from micro seismicity have extremely low amplitude. We develop a methodology to unveil the signals that are smeared in the strong ambient noise and thus facilitate a more accurate arrival-time picking that will ultimately improve the localization accuracy. In the proposed technique, we decompose the recorded data into several morphological multi-scale components. In order to unveil weak signal, we propose an orthogonalization operator which acts as a time-varying weighting in the morphological reconstruction. The orthogonalization operator is obtained using an inversion process. This orthogonalized morphological reconstruction can be interpreted as a projection of the higher-dimensional vector. We first test the proposed technique using a synthetic dataset. Then the proposed technique is applied to a field dataset recorded in a project in China, in which the signals induced from hydraulic fracturing are recorded by twelve three-component (3-C) geophones in a monitoring well. The result demonstrates that the orthogonalized morphological reconstruction can make the extremely weak microseismic signals detectable.

Gas production strategy of underground coal gasification based on multiple gas sources.

Project description:To lower stability requirement of gas production in UCG (underground coal gasification), create better space and opportunities of development for UCG, an emerging sunrise industry, in its initial stage, and reduce the emission of blast furnace gas, converter gas, and coke oven gas, this paper, for the first time, puts forward a new mode of utilization of multiple gas sources mainly including ground gasifier gas, UCG gas, blast furnace gas, converter gas, and coke oven gas and the new mode was demonstrated by field tests. According to the field tests, the existing power generation technology can fully adapt to situation of high hydrogen, low calorific value, and gas output fluctuation in the gas production in UCG in multiple-gas-sources power generation; there are large fluctuations and air can serve as a gasifying agent; the gas production of UCG in the mode of both power and methanol based on multiple gas sources has a strict requirement for stability. It was demonstrated by the field tests that the fluctuations in gas production in UCG can be well monitored through a quality control chart method.

Coal-packed methane biofilter for mitigation of green house gas emissions from coal mine ventilation air.

Project description:Methane emitted by coal mine ventilation air (MVA) is a significant greenhouse gas. A mitigation strategy is the oxidation of methane to carbon dioxide, which is approximately twenty-one times less effective at global warming than methane on a mass-basis. The low non-combustible methane concentrations at high MVA flow rates call for a catalytic strategy of oxidation. A laboratory-scale coal-packed biofilter was designed and partially removed methane from humidified air at flow rates between 0.2 and 2.4 L min-1 at 30°C with nutrient solution added every three days. Methane oxidation was catalysed by a complex community of naturally-occurring microorganisms, with the most abundant member being identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence as belonging to the methanotrophic genus Methylocystis. Additional inoculation with a laboratory-grown culture of Methylosinus sporium, as investigated in a parallel run, only enhanced methane consumption during the initial 12 weeks. The greatest level of methane removal of 27.2±0.66 g methane m-3 empty bed h-1 was attained for the non-inoculated system, which was equivalent to removing 19.7±2.9% methane from an inlet concentration of 1% v/v at an inlet gas flow rate of 1.6 L min-1 (2.4 min empty bed residence time). These results show that low-cost coal packing holds promising potential as a suitable growth surface and contains methanotrophic microorganisms for the catalytic oxidative removal of methane.

Analysis of the Interaction Mechanism of the Risk Factors of Gas Explosions in Chinese Underground Coal Mines.

Project description:Gas explosion accidents easily cause severe casualties in Chinese underground coal mines. Systematic analysis of accident causation is crucial for the prevention of gas explosions. This study identifies the representative risk factors of gas explosions and determines the interrelationship among these risk factors to highlight weak links and develop countermeasures. A total of 21 representative risk factors of gas explosions were identified through 128 case studies and front-line investigations. On this basis, a five-level hierarchical structure model of gas explosions was established to explore the complex interrelationships among the representative risk factors based on a combination of the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) methods. Moreover, the Matrix of Cross Impact Multiplications Applied to Classification (MICMAC) method was applied to achieve risk factor classification into four clusters, namely, driving factors, linkage factors, dependent factors and autonomous factors. The results indicated that the interrelationships and emergence properties among the risk factors may cause gas explosions, which should give more attention to the interrelationships among multiple factors and multiple subsystems for coal enterprises. Meanwhile, the complex geological conditions, poor safety supervision, inadequate safety education and training, incomplete execution safety regulations and poor safety technology and input are the long-term focus of risk management for coal enterprises. Finally, 10 countermeasures were proposed to control these representative risk factors and interrelationships. The results are helpful to the development of gas explosion risk management policies and to the preferential allocation of limited resources to resolve these issues.

Prokaryotic Life Associated with Coal-Fire Gas Vents Revealed by Metagenomics.

Project description:The natural combustion of underground coal seams leads to the formation of gas, which contains molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide. In places where hot coal gases are released to the surface, specific thermal ecosystems are formed. Here, 16S rRNA gene profiling and shotgun metagenome sequencing were employed to characterize the taxonomic diversity and genetic potential of prokaryotic communities of the near-surface ground layer near hot gas vents in an open quarry heated by a subsurface coal fire. The communities were dominated by only a few groups of spore-forming Firmicutes, namely the aerobic heterotroph Candidatus Carbobacillus altaicus, the aerobic chemolitoautotrophs Kyrpidia tusciae and Hydrogenibacillus schlegelii, and the anaerobic chemolithoautotroph Brockia lithotrophica. Genome analysis predicted that these species can obtain energy from the oxidation of hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide in coal gases. We assembled the first complete closed genome of a member of uncultured class-level division DTU015 in the phylum Firmicutes. This bacterium, 'Candidatus Fermentithermobacillus carboniphilus' Bu02, was predicted to be rod-shaped and capable of flagellar motility and sporulation. Genome analysis showed the absence of aerobic and anaerobic respiration and suggested chemoheterotrophic lifestyle with the ability to ferment peptides, amino acids, N-acetylglucosamine, and tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates. Bu02 bacterium probably plays the role of a scavenger, performing the fermentation of organics formed by autotrophic Firmicutes supported by coal gases. A comparative genome analysis of the DTU015 division revealed that most of its members have a similar lifestyle.
