A randomized control trial evaluating the effects of police body-worn cameras.

ABSTRACT: Police body-worn cameras (BWCs) have been widely promoted as a technological mechanism to improve policing and the perceived legitimacy of police and legal institutions, yet evidence of their effectiveness is limited. To estimate the effects of BWCs, we conducted a randomized controlled trial involving 2,224 Metropolitan Police Department officers in Washington, DC. Here we show that BWCs have very small and statistically insignificant effects on police use of force and civilian complaints, as well as other policing activities and judicial outcomes. These results suggest we should recalibrate our expectations of BWCs' ability to induce large-scale behavioral changes in policing, particularly in contexts similar to Washington, DC.

Project description:BackgroundObesity is an increasingly prevalent chronic condition that is associated with serious morbidity and mortality. Excess body weight is a risk factor contributing to diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disease, gall bladder disease, and some types of cancer. Almost all the Western anti-obesity drugs have adverse effects or body weight is regained upon cessation of therapy. Recent studies have found that acupuncture had a similar efficacy as the Western anti-obesity drugs with fewer reported adverse effects. However, these conclusions were limited due to the small sample size and low quality of methodologies of these studies. Therefore, we design this study to explore the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture on weight control.Methods/designThis is a pilot single-blinded, randomized, sham-controlled trial on acupuncture for body weight control. Seventy-two participants are randomly assigned to the acupuncture group or the control group. Tianshu (ST-25), Daheng (SP-15), Daimai (GB-26), Qihai (CV-6), Zhongwan (CV-12), Zusanli (ST-36), Fenglong (ST-40), and Sanyinjiao (SP-6) are selected as acupuncture points. For the acupuncture group, disposable acupuncture needles will be inserted at a depth of 10-25 mm into the points and electrical stimulation with dense-disperse waves at 50 Hz and 10 V will be applied on the abdominal points. The bodily needles will be retained for 30 minutes. For subjects assigned to the control group, Streitberger's non-invasive acupuncture needles will be applied to serve as the sham control at the same acupoints with the same stimulation modality, except that the needles are only adhered to the skin instead of inserted. The duration of the treatment is 8 weeks with two sessions per week, and the follow-up period is 8 weeks. The primary outcome is the change in body weight before and after treatment. The secondary outcomes include changes in body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, and body fat percentage during the treatment and follow-up period.DiscussionThe study will compare the efficacy and safety of acupuncture with sham acupuncture on weight control, in the hope of obtaining evidence for utilizing acupuncture for body weight control.Trial registrationNCT02516878 . Project description:Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) improves survival in multiple myeloma (MM). However, up to 30% of MM patients are unable to collect optimal numbers of peripheral blood (PB) CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) with standard G-CSF mobilization. Motixafortide is a novel cyclic-peptide CXCR4 inhibitor with extended receptor occupancy and enhanced in-vivo activity. The GENESIS Trial is a prospective, phase III, double-blind, placebo-controlled, international, multicenter, superiority trial with 122 adult patients randomized (2:1) to motixafortide+G-CSF or placebo+G-CSF for HSPC mobilization for ASCT in MM (NCT03246529). The primary endpoint of the study was met, with motixafortide+G-CSF enabling 92.5% of patients to collect ≥6x106 CD34+ cells/kg within 2 apheresis procedures versus 26.2% with placebo+G-CSF (p<0.0001). A key, prespecified secondary endpoint was also met, with motixafortide+G-CSF enabling 88.8% of patients to collect ≥6x106 CD34+ cells/kg in 1 apheresis versus 9.5% with placebo+G-CSF (p<0.0001). Motixafortide+G-CSF was safe and well-tolerated, with the most common treatment-emergent adverse events observed being transient, Grade 1/2 injection site reactions (pain: 50%, erythema: 27.5%, pruritis: 21.3%). In addition, extended immunophenotyping and single-cell transcriptional profiling were performed on CD34+ HSPCs mobilized on the GENESIS Trial, as well as a contemporaneous MM cohort undergoing plerixafor+G-CSF mobilization for ASCT and 3 cohorts of allogeneic HSPC donors undergoing single-agent mobilization with motixafortide, plerixafor or G-CSF alone. Motixafortide+G-CSF resulted in a 10.5-fold increase in primitive HSPCs collected versus placebo+G-CSF (p<0.0001); and significantly greater numbers of early stem and progenitors versus both placebo+G-CSF (p<0.0001) and plerixafor+G-CSF (p=0.0327). Motixafortide also preferentially mobilized HSPC subsets with upregulated gene expression pathways associated with enhanced self-renewal, regeneration and quiescence (EGF, NFB/TNF and HBO1). In conclusion, motixafortide+G-CSF mobilized significantly greater CD34+ HSPC numbers within 2 apheresis procedures versus placebo+G-CSF. Motixafortide also preferentially mobilized primitive stem and early progenitor cells with unique transcriptional profiles versus plerixafor and G-CSF.

Project description:BackgroundHearing aids are important assistive devices for hearing rehabilitation. However, the cost of commonly available commercial hearing aids is often higher than the average monthly income of individuals in some developing countries. Therefore, there is a great need to locally produce cheaper, but still effective, hearing aids. The Thai-produced P02 hearing aid was designed to meet this requirement.ObjectiveTo compare the effectiveness of the P02 hearing aid with two common commercially available digital hearing aids (Clip-II™ and Concerto Basic®).MethodsA prospective, randomized controlled trial with a cross-over design was conducted from October 2012 to September 2014 in a rural Thai community. There were 73 participants (mean age of 73.7 ± 7.3 years) included in this study with moderate to severe hearing loss who were assessed for hearing aid performance, including probe microphone real-ear measurement, functional gain, speech discrimination, and participant satisfaction with the overall quality of perceived sound and the design of the device.ResultsThere were no statistically significant differences in functional gain or speech discrimination among the three hearing aids evaluated (p-value > 0.05). Real-ear measurements of the three hearing aids met the target curve in 93% of the participants. The best real-ear measurement of the hearing aid following the target curve was significantly lower than that of Clip-II™ and Concerto Basic® (p-value < 0.05) at high frequency. However, participants rated the overall quality of sound higher for the P02 hearing aid than that of Clip-II™ but lower than that of Concerto Basic® (p-value > 0.05). Participants revealed that the P02 hearing aid provided the highest satisfaction ratings for design and user-friendliness with statistical significance (p-value < 0.05).ConclusionThe P02 hearing aid was an effective device for older Thai adults with hearing disabilities. Additionally, its modern design, simplicity of use, and ease of maintenance were attractive to this group of individuals. These benefits support the rehabilitation potential of this hearing aid model and its positive impact on the quality of life of older adults in developing countries.Trial registrationThis study was registered under Clinicaltrial.gov NCT01902914 .
