The gut microbiota plays a critical role in pathogen defense. Studies using antibiotic-treated mice reveal mechanisms that increase susceptibility to <i>Clostridioides difficile</i> infection (CDI), but risk factors associated with CDI in humans extend beyond antibiotic use.
