There are two paralogous Escherichia coli phosphotransferase systems, one for sugar import (PTS<sup>sugar</sup>) and one for nitrogen regulation (PTS<sup>Ntr</sup>), that utilize proteins enzyme I<sup>sugar</sup> (EI<sup>sugar</sup>) and HPr, and enzyme I<sup>Ntr</sup> (EI<sup>Ntr</sup>) and NPr, respectively.
