Attitudinal dataset for mediating the effects of public acceptance on bus reform scheme in a developing country context.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents a comprehensive dataset of how public perceptions and its statistical implication on the behavioral adaptation toward the acceptability of bus reform scheme proposed by the government of Aceh, Indonesia. Studies indicate that public response to such a proposed policy is significantly related to the effectiveness of its implementation. Given the absence of studies from the developing countries context, a stated preference (SP) questionnaire is developed to investigate the public's consciousness concerning bus reform acceptance. A paper-pencil based questionnaire survey performed by direct interview was conducted in late 2017 and early 2018. The questionnaires were distributed with a total of 450 questionnaires valid. The most pertinent inquiries in our questionnaires were designated to attain (i) attitudinal indicators toward the acceptance of bus reform policy, (ii) attitudinal indicators related to perceived appropriateness of the policy, (iii) perceived awareness of problem private-mode in society, (iv) private-mode dependency, (v) inhibition of freedom of movements and (vi) correct and acceptable policy. We implemented a 4-point Likert scale such as 1 to 4 (strongly disagree to strongly agreed) in order to style the questionnaire easy to answer. A valid dataset was analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for revealing how public perception has statistically significant explained the perceived effectiveness of the proposed bus reform policy.

Project description:BackgroundRates of End-Stage Kidney Disease among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australians in remote areas are disproportionately high; however, haemodialysis is not currently offered in most remote areas. People must therefore leave their 'Country' (with its traditions and supports) and relocate to metropolitan or regional centres, disrupting their kinship and the cultural ties that are important for their wellbeing. The South Australian Mobile Dialysis Truck is a service which visits remote communities for one to two week periods; allowing patients to have dialysis on 'Country', reuniting them with their friends and family, and providing a chance to take part in cultural activities. The aims of the study were to qualitatively evaluate the South Australian Mobile Dialysis Truck program, its impact on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous dialysis patients, and the facilitators and barriers to using the service.MethodsFace to face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 Indigenous dialysis patients and 10 nurses who had attended trips across nine dialysis units. Realist evaluation methodology and thematic analysis established patient and nursing experiences with the Mobile Dialysis Truck.ResultsThe consequences of leaving Country included grief and loss. Barriers to trip attendance included lower trip frequencies, ineffective trip advertisement, lack of appropriate or unavailable accommodation for staff and patients and poor patient health. Benefits of the service included the ability to fulfil cultural commitments, minimisation of medical retrievals from patients missing dialysis to return to remote areas, improved trust and relationships between patients and staff, and improved patient quality of life. The bus also provided a valuable cultural learning opportunity for staff. Facilitators to successful trips included support staff, clinical back-up and a co-ordinator role.ConclusionsThe Mobile Dialysis Truck was found to improve the social and emotional wellbeing of Indigenous patients who have had to relocate for dialysis, and build positive relationships and trust between metropolitan nurses and remote patients. The trust fostered improved engagement with associated health services. It also provided valuable cultural learning opportunities for nursing staff. This format of health service may improve cultural competencies with nursing staff who provide regular care for Indigenous patients.

Project description:In the context of worldwide ageing, increasing numbers of older people are lonely, isolated and excluded, with serious implications for health, and cognitive and physical functioning. Access to good public transport can improve mobility and social participation among older adults, and policies that improve access and promote use, such as concessionary travel schemes, are potentially important in promoting healthy and successful ageing. Concessionary travel schemes for older people are in place in many countries but are under threat following the global financial crisis. Evidence regarding their success in encouraging activity and social participation is generally positive but based largely on qualitative or observational associations and, in particular, is often limited by the lack of appropriate comparison groups. We use changes in the English statutory scheme, in particular the rising eligibility age from 2010 onwards, as a natural experiment to explore its impact on older people's travel. A difference-in-difference-in-difference analysis of National Travel Surveys (2002-2016) compares three age groups differentially affected by eligibility criteria: 50-59 years (consistently ineligible), 60-64 years (decreasing eligibility from 2010) and 65-74 years (consistently eligible). Compared with 50-59-year-olds, bus travel by 60-74-year-olds increased year-on-year from 2002 to 2010 then fell following rises in eligibility age (annual change in weekly bus travel: -2.9 per cent (-4.1%, -1.7%) in 60-74- versus 50-59-year-olds). Results were consistent across gender, occupation and rurality. Our results indicate that access to, specifically, free travel increases bus use and access to services among older people, potentially improving mobility, social participation and health. However, the rising eligibility age in England has led to a reduction in bus travel in older people, including those not directly affected by the change, demonstrating that the positive impact of the concession goes beyond those who are eligible. Future work should explore the cost-benefit trade-off of this and similar schemes worldwide.
