Cobalt Nanoparticles Embedded into N-Doped Carbon from Metal Organic Frameworks as Highly Active Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

ABSTRACT: Cystosepiment-like cobalt nanoparticles@N-doped carbon composite named Co-NPs@NC with highly efficient electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction was prepared from carbonization of N-doped Co-MOFs. The optimized Co-NPs@NC-600 shows overpotentials of 315 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA·cm^-2. Meanwhile, the electrocatalys presents excellent long-term durability. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to the unique cystosepiment-like architecture with high specific surface area (214 m²/g), high conductivity of N-doped carbon and well-distributed active sites.

Highly ordered macroporous dual-element-doped carbon from metal-organic frameworks for catalyzing oxygen reduction.

Project description:Multiple heteroatom-doped carbons with 3D ordered macro/meso-microporous structures have not been realized by simple carbonization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, ordered macroporous phosphorus- and nitrogen-doped carbon (M-PNC) is prepared successfully by carbonization of double-solvent-induced MOF/polystyrene sphere (PS) precursors accompanied with spontaneous removal of the PS template, followed by post-doping. M-PNC shows a high specific surface area of 837 m2 g-1, nitrogen doping of 3.17 at%, and phosphorus doping of 1.12 at%. Thanks to the hierarchical structure, high specific surface area, and multiple heteroatom-doping, M-PNC exhibits unusual catalytic activity as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction. Computational calculation reveals that the P[double bond, length as m-dash]O group helps stabilize the adsorption of intermediates, and the position of P[double bond, length as m-dash]O relative to graphitic N significantly improves the activity of the adjacent carbons for electrocatalysis.

Missing-linker metal-organic frameworks for oxygen evolution reaction.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as compelling platforms for the development of miscellaneous applications because of their structural diversity and functional tunability. Here, we propose that the electrocatalytic properties could be well modified by incorporating missing linkers into the MOF. Theoretical calculations suggest the electronic structure of MOFs can be tuned by introducing missing linkers, which improves oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of the MOF. Inspired by these aspects, we introduced various missing linkers into a layered-pillared MOF Co2(OH)2(C8H4O4) (termed as CoBDC) to prepare missing-linker MOFs. Transmission electron microscope and synchrotron X-ray measurements confirmed that the missing linkers in the MOF could be introduced and well controlled by our strategy. The self-supported MOF nanoarrays with missing linkers of carboxyferrocene exhibit excellent OER performance with ultralow overpotential of 241 mV at 100 mA cm-2. This work opens a new prospect to develop efficient MOF-based electrocatalysts by introducing missing linkers.

Metal-organic-frameworks derived cobalt embedded in various carbon structures as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions.

Project description:A series of nanocomposites of cobalt embedded in N-doped nanoporous carbons, carbon nanotubes or hollow carbon onions have been synthesized by a one-step carbonization of metal-organic-framework ZIF-67. The effect of the carbonization temperature on the structural evolution of the resulting nanocomposites has been investigated in detail. Among the as-synthesized materials, the cobalt/nanoporous N-doped carbon composites have demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activities and durability towards oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline medium. Compared to the benchmark Pt/C catalyst, the optimized Co@C-800 (carbonized at 800?°C) exhibited high oxygen reduction reaction activity with an onset potential of 0.92?V, and a half-wave potential of 0.82?V. Moreover, the optimized Co@C-800 also showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction from water splitting, with a low onset potential of 1.43?V and a potential of 1.61?V at 10?mA?cm-2 current density. This work offered a simple solution to develop metal-organic-framework-derived materials for highly efficient electrochemical applications.

Advanced Bifunctional Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Electrocatalyst Derived from Surface-Mounted Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are considered as promising catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which are important for many energy provision technologies, such as electrolyzers, fuel cells and some types of advanced batteries. In this work, a "strain modulation" approach has been applied through the use of surface-mounted NiFe-MOFs in order to design an advanced bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalyst. The material exhibits an excellent OER activity in alkaline media, reaching an industrially relevant current density of 200?mA?cm-2 at an overpotential of only ?210?mV. It demonstrates operational long-term stability even at a high current density of 500?mA?cm-2 and exhibits the so far narrowest "overpotential window" ?EORR-OER of 0.69?V in 0.1?m KOH with a mass loading being two orders of magnitude lower than that of benchmark electrocatalysts.

A dinuclear cobalt cluster as electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:Dinuclear metal clusters as metalloenzymes execute efficient catalytic activities in biological systems. Enlightened by this, a dinuclear {CoII 2} cluster was selected to survey its ORR (Oxygen Reduction Reaction) catalytic activities. The crystalline {CoII 2} possesses defined structure and potential catalytic active centers of {CoN4O2} sites, which was identified by X-ray single crystal diffraction, Raman and XPS. The appropriate supramolecular porosity combining abundant pyridinic-N and triazole-N sites of {CoII 2} catalyst synergistically benefit the ORR performance. As a result, this non-noble metal catalyst presents a nice ORR electrocatalytic activity and abides by a nearly 4-electron reduction pathway. Thus, this unpyrolyzed crystalline catalyst clearly provide precise active sites and the whole defined structural information, which can help researcher to design and fabricate efficient ORR catalysts to improve their activities. Considering the visible crystal structure, a single cobalt center-mediated catalytic mechanism was also proposed to elucidate the ORR process.

Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER).

Project description:The exploration of earth-abundant electrocatalysts with high performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is eminently desirable and remains a significant challenge. The composite of the metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni10Co-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) and the highly conductive carbon material ketjenblack (KB) could be easily obtained from the MOF synthesis in the presence of KB in a one-step solvothermal reaction. The composite and the pristine MOF perform better than commercially available Ni/NiO nanoparticles under the same conditions for the OER. Activation of the nickel-cobalt clusters from the MOF can be seen under the applied anodic potential, which steadily boosts the OER performance. Ni10Co-BTC and Ni10Co-BTC/KB are used as sacrificial agents and undergo structural changes during electrochemical measurements, the stabilized materials show good OER performances.

Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks with Extra Metallic Sites as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:The 2D conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are expected to be an ideal electrocatalyst due to their high utilization of metal atoms. Exploring a new conjugated ligand with extra active metallic center can further boost the structural advantages of conductive MOFs. In this work, hexaiminohexaazatrinaphthalene (HAHATN) is employed as a conjugated ligand to construct bimetallic sited conductive MOFs (M23(M13?HAHATN)2) with an extra M-N2 moiety. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the 2D conjugated framework renders M23(M13?HAHATN)2 a high electric conductivity with narrow bandgap (0.19 eV) for electron transfer and a favorable in-plane porous structure (2.7 nm) for mass transfer. Moreover, the metal atom at the extra M-N2 moiety has a higher unsaturation degree than that at M-N4 linkage, resulting in a stronger ability to donate electrons for enhancing electroactivity. These characteristics endow the new conductive MOFs with an enhanced electroactivity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis. Among the series of M23(M13?HAHATN)2 MOF, Ni3(Ni3?HAHATN)2 nanosheets with the optimal structure exhibit a small overpotential of 115 mV at 10 mA cm-2, low Tafel slope of (45.6 mV dec-1), and promising electrocatalytic stability for HER. This work provides an effective strategy for designing conductive MOFs with a favorable structure for electrocatalysis.

Catalytic Metal Nanoparticles Embedded in Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks for Chemiresistors: Highly Active and Conductive Porous Materials.

Project description:Conductive porous materials having a high surface reactivity offer great promise for a broad range of applications. However, a general and scalable synthesis of such materials remains challenging. In this work, the facile synthesis of catalytic metal nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is reported as highly active and conductive porous materials. After the assembly of 2D conductive MOFs (C-MOFs), i.e., Cu3(hexahydroxytriphenylene)2 [Cu3(HHTP)2], Pd or Pt NPs are functionalized within the cavities of C-MOFs by infiltration of metal ions and subsequent reduction. The unique structure of Cu3(HHTP)2 with a cavity size of 2 nm confines the bulk growth of metal NPs, resulting in ultra-small (?2 nm) and well-dispersed metal NPs loaded in 2D C-MOFs. The Pd or Pt NPs-loaded Cu3(HHTP)2 exhibits remarkably improved NO2 sensing performance at room temperature due to the high reactivity of catalytic metal NPs and the high porosity of C-MOFs. The catalytic effect of Pd and Pt NPs on NO2 sensing of Cu3(HHTP)2, in terms of reaction rate kinetics and activation energy, is demonstrated.

Phosphorus modification of cobalt-iron nanoparticles embedded in a nitrogen-doped carbon network for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:For the electrochemical reduction of oxygen the development of heteroatom-doped carbon-based transition metal catalysts has become a recognized strategy to replace traditional noble metal catalysts. In this work a catalyst consisting of CoFe nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon-based materials (NC) supported by carbon nanotubes (CNTs), i.e. Fe3Co1@NC/CNTs, was modified via treatment with a phosphate salt to synthesize a P-Fe3Co1@NC/CNTs catalyst. The P-Fe3Co1@NC/CNTs exhibits with 5.29 mA cm-2 an enhanced current density which is comparable to a Pt/C catalyst. In addition, a stability and methanol resistance better than the Pt/C catalyst were observed which is ascribed to the carbon encapsulation and the synergies between the two transition metals. Finally, the reaction mechanism of P-doping was studied and discussed. These results provide possible directions for carbon-based catalysts and doping with heteroatoms for the improvement of catalytic activity. Moreover, the zinc-air battery assembled with P-Fe3Co1@NC/CNTs as the air-cathode exhibited a high-power density of 73 mW cm-2, which is comparable to that of Pt/C (71 mW cm-2) and a specific capacity of 763 mA h g-1. The prepared catalyst could potentially serve to take the place of precious metal catalysts in rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Nanostructure Engineering of Metal-Organic Derived Frameworks: Cobalt Phosphide Embedded in Carbon Nanotubes as an Efficient ORR Catalyst.

Project description:Heteroatom doping is considered an efficient strategy when tuning the electronic and structural modulation of catalysts to achieve improved performance towards renewable energy applications. Herein, we synthesized a series of carbon-based hierarchical nanostructures through the controlled pyrolysis of Co-MOF (metal organic framework) precursors followed by in situ phosphidation. Two kinds of catalysts were prepared: metal nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanotubes, and metal nanoparticles dispersed on the carbon surface. The results proved that the metal nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanotubes exhibit enhanced ORR electrocatalytic performance, owed to the enriched catalytic sites and the mass transfer facilitating channels provided by the hierarchical porous structure of the carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the phosphidation of the metal nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanotubes (P-Co-CNTs) increases the surface area and porosity, resulting in faster electron transfer, greater conductivity, and lower charge transfer resistance towards ORR pathways. The P-Co-CNT catalyst shows a half-wave potential of 0.887 V, a Tafel slope of 67 mV dec-1, and robust stability, which are comparatively better than the precious metal catalyst (Pt/C). Conclusively, this study delivers a novel path for designing multiple crystal phases with improved catalytic performance for energy devices.
