Zeylanidiummanasiae, a new species of Podostemaceae based on molecular and morphological data from Kerala, India.

ABSTRACT: We present the description of Zeylanidiummanasiae (Podostemaceae), a new species from Kerala, India, which is proposed based on molecular, macro- and micromorphological data. This species is characterised by its ribbon-like dichotomous thallus, floriferous shoots produced along the margins and dichotomy of the thallus, inflorescence with two bracts, unequal stigmatic lobes, ellipsoid fruits and large seeds.

Terniopsisyongtaiensis (Podostemaceae), a new species from South East China based on morphological and genomic data.

Project description:The new species Terniopsisyongtaiensis X.X. Su, Miao Zhang & Bing-Hua Chen, from Fujian Province, China, is described and illustrated. It is similar to T.heterostaminata from Thailand, but differs in its two fertile stamens, fewer but longer vegetative ramuli, fewer but shorter flowering ramuli, shorter pedicels, capsule-stalk and stamens. The complete chroloplast genome of the new species is 129,074 bp long and has a typical quadripartite structure, including two inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 18,504 bp in length, separated by a large single-copy (LSC) and a small single-copy (SSC) regions of 79,000 bp and 13,066 bp, respectively. The ycf1 and ycf2 genes were lost compared to most higher plants, leading to a substantial reduction in the IR. The phylogenetic analysis using both matK and nrITS revealed that T.yongtaiensis is sister to T.heterostaminata with moderate support, and formed a clade with other Terniopsis species, suggesting that the new species belongs to Tristichoideae.

New Species and New Records of Otidea from China Based on Molecular and Morphological Data.

Project description:Species of genus Otidea previously reported in China are mainly distributed in the northeast, northwest and southwest regions of China, but the species diversity of Otidea in north China is not very clear. In this study, newly collected Otidea specimens from northern China and some herbarium specimens deposited in three important Chinese fungus herbaria (HMAS, HKAS, HMJAU) were studied using morphological and phylogenetic methods. The internal transcribed spacers of the nrDNA (ITS), the nrRNA 28S subunit (nrLSU), the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α), and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rpb2), were employed to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships between Otidea species. Results identified 16 species of Otidea, of which seven new species are described, namely O.aspera, O.cupulata, O. filiformis, O.khakicolorata, O. parvula, O.plicara and O.purpureobrunnea. Otidea bicolor and O. pruinosa are synonymized as O. subpurpurea. Two species, O. mirabilis and O. nannfeldtii, are being reported for the first time in China. The occurrence of O. bufonia, O. leporina and O. onotica are confirmed by molecular data in China.

Three new species of EntolomasubgenusPouzarella from China based on morphological and molecular data.

Project description:In the present paper, three additional species of EntolomasubgenusPouzarella viz. E.erectoides, E.griseocarpum and E.rubropilosum are described from China. E.rubropilosum is a typical species in section Pouzarella; E.griseocarpum and E.erectoides are members of sect. Dysthales. The taxa are further confirmed by ITS, RPB2, LSU and mtSSU analyses and phylogenetic relationships with other Entolomasubgen.Pouzarella species are also discussed. ITS sequence analysis showed that the sizes of the entire ITS region and ITS1 are remarkably divergent, while the ITS2 is conserved in length within Entolomasubgen.Pouzarella. Molecular analyses, based on the combined dataset, demonstrated that species diversity of subgen.Pouzarella in China is much higher than previously thought, in the present study twenty phylogenetic species from China are taken into consideration. On the other hand, morphological and molecular analyses suggested that classification of Entolomasubgen.Pouzarella probably has to be fundamentally re-adjusted based on additional data.

Four New Species and New Records of Orbilia from China Based on Molecular and Morphological Data.

Project description:This study reports four new species and three new record species of Orbiliaceous fungi from China. Orbilia baisensis, O. hanzhongensis, O. nanningensis and O. pinea are described as new species and O. crenatomarginata, O. vinosa and O. vitalbae are described as new record species. All the studied species were identified by morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) sequences. Four new species are described based on their sexual and asexual states, and their differences with the close relatives were compared and discussed.

New species of Retiboletus (Boletales, Boletaceae) from China based on morphological and molecular data.

Project description:Species of the genus Retiboletus in China were investigated based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences from the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nrLSU) and the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1-α). Nine species were recovered from China, including two new and seven known species. The new species, namely Retiboletus ater and R. sinogriseus, from southwestern and northeastern China respectively, are documented and illustrated in this paper. Retiboletus ater is morphologically characterized by its black to grayish black pileus, white to grayish hymenophore, black to blackish stipe and white to grayish white context. Retiboletus sinogriseus is morphologically characterized by its brown to grayish-brown pileus, yellow to grayish-yellow hymenophore, pale yellow to brownish stipe and yellow to brownish-yellow context. Descriptions and line drawings of these two novel species and their comparisons with allied taxa are presented.

Lespedezadanxiaensis (Fabaceae), a new species from Guangdong, China, based on molecular and morphological data.

Project description:Lespedezadanxiaensis (Fabaceae), a new species from Danxiashan National Nature Reserve in Guangdong Province, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to Lespedezapilosa, but it can be easily distinguished by its thin leathery leaflets and long peduncles. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS confirmed that the new species belongs to Lespedezasubg.Macrolespedeza. The new species is the first known species of Lespedeza endemic to Danxia landform and is currently only known from Mount Danxia, Guangdong.

A new species of Hiptage (Malpighiaceae) from northwest Yunnan (China) based on molecular and morphological data.

Project description:Hiptagestenopterum K.Tan & M.X.Ren, a new species of Hiptage collected from a deep valley close to the Nujiang Gorge, northwest of Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on molecular and morphological data. The new species was found isolated in an entrenched valley of the Laowo River, a tributary of the Nujiang River, at the northern edge of the distribution range of the genus. H.stenopterum shares some morphological similarities with the narrowly endemic H.incurvatum and H.lushuiensis. However, H.stenopterum is easily distinguished by its oblanceolate lateral wing of winged mericarp, 10 to 12 calyx glands, and branchlets densely rusty tomentose. The new species status is also supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosome internal transcribed spacer (nrITS), which showed distinct systematic boundaries from the most morphologically similar species, H.incurvatum and their morphological relatives, H.lushuiensis.

A new species of bird's nest fungi: characterisation of Cyathus subglobisporus sp. nov. based on morphological and molecular data.

Project description:Recent collections of bird's nest fungi (i.e. Crucibulum, Cyathus, Mycocalia, Nidula, and Nidularia species) in northern Thailand resulted in the discovery of a new species of Cyathus, herein described as C. subglobisporus. This species is distinct by a combination of ivory-coloured fruiting bodies covered with shaggy hairs, plications on the inner surface of the peridium and subglobose basidiospores. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and LSU ribosomal DNA sequences using neighbour-joining, maximum likelihood and weighted maximum parsimony support Cyathus subglobisporus as a distinct species and sister to a clade containing C. annulatus, C. renweii and C. stercoreus in the Striatum group.

Two New Species and a New Chinese Record of Hypocreaceae as Evidenced by Morphological and Molecular Data.

Project description:To explore species diversity of Hypocreaceae, collections from Guangdong, Hubei, and Tibet of China were examined and two new species and a new Chinese record were discovered. Morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analyses of the ITS, LSU, EF-1α, and RPB2 regions support their placements in Hypocreaceae and the establishments of the new species. Hypomyces hubeiensis sp. nov. is characterized by occurrence on fruitbody of Agaricus sp., concentric rings formed on MEA medium, verticillium-like conidiophores, subulate phialides, rod-shaped to narrowly ellipsoidal conidia, and absence of chlamydospores. Trichoderma subiculoides sp. nov. is distinguished by effuse to confluent rudimentary stromata lacking of a well-developed flank and not changing color in KOH, subcylindrical asci containing eight ascospores that disarticulate into 16 dimorphic part-ascospores, verticillium-like conidiophores, subcylindrical phialides, and subellipsoidal to rod-shaped conidia. Morphological distinctions between the new species and their close relatives are discussed. Hypomyces orthosporus is found for the first time from China.

Morphological and Molecular Phylogenetic Data Reveal a New Species of Primula (Primulaceae) from Hunan, China.

Project description:A new species of Primulaceae, Primula undulifolia, is described from the hilly area of Hunan province in south-central China. Its morphology and distributional range suggest that it is allied to P. kwangtungensis, both adapted to subtropical climate, having contiguous distribution and similar habitat, growing on shady and moist cliffs. Petioles, scapes and pedicels of them are densely covered with rusty multicellular hairs, but the new species can be easily distinguished by its smaller flowers and narrowly oblong leaves with undulate margins. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on four DNA markers (ITS, matK, trnL-F and rps16) confirmed the new species as an independent lineage and constitutes a main clade together with P. kwangtungensis, P. kweichouensis, P. wangii and P. hunanensis of Primula sect. Carolinella.
