Design of Scalable Optical Decoder based on Hexagonal Plasmonic Modes induced on Topological Insulator Surface States.

ABSTRACT: In the present work, optical decoder based on hexagonal plasmonic lens encrypted on topological insulator is designed. Using Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation we have shown 2D optical lattice of scalar vortices in hexagonal plasmonic lens using surface states of topological insulator (Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.8Se1.2). To ensure feasible and flexible physical dimensions, scaling of the optical device is proposed via increasing area density of vortices. This is numerically obtained by changing radius of hexagonal lens or decreasing incident wavelength. Using these scalable optical vortex lattices, a device scheme is proposed for storing or decoding information. Advantage of scaling in optical devices without any additional processing step shows the promise of this technology for future devices. Simulation results are further validated by detailed theoretical calculation of electric field intensity and phase distribution.

Electron-phonon coupling in topological surface states: The role of polar optical modes.

Project description:The use of topological edge states for spintronic applications could be severely hampered by limited lifetimes due to intrinsic many-body interactions, in particular electron-phonon coupling. Previous works to determine the intrinsic coupling strength did not provide a coherent answer. Here, the electron-phonon interaction in the metallic surface state of 3D topological insulators is revised within a first principles framework. For the archetypical cases of Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, we find an overall weak coupling constant of less than 0.15, but with a characteristic energy dependence. Derived electronic self-energies compare favorably with previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results. The prevailing coupling is carried by optical modes of polar character, which is weakly screened by the metallic surface state and can be reduced by doping into bulk bands. We do not find any indication of a strong coupling to the A1g mode or the presence of a Kohn anomaly in the surface phonon spectrum. The weak intrinsic electron-phonon coupling guarantees long-lived quasiparticles at elevated temperatures.

Observation of Restored Topological Surface States in Magnetically Doped Topological Insulator.

Project description:The introduction of ferromagnetic order in topological insulators in general breaks the time-reversal symmetry and a gap is opened in topological surface bands. Various studies have focused on gap-opened magnetic topological insulators, because such modified band structures provide a promising platform for observing exotic quantum physics. However, the role of antiferromagnetic order in topological insulators is still controversial. In this report, we demonstrate that it is possible to restore the topological surface states by effectively reducing the antiferromagnetic ordering in Gd-substituted Bi2Te3. We successfully control the magnetic impurities via thermal treatments in ultra-high vacuum condition and observe apparent restoration of topological surface band dispersions. The microscopic mechanism of atomic rearrangements and the restoration process of topological surface states are unraveled by the combination of scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations. This work provides an effective way to control the magnetic impurities which is strongly correlated with topological surface states.

Spatial potential ripples of azimuthal surface modes in topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanowires.

Project description:Topological insulators (TI) nanowires (NW) are an emerging class of structures, promising both novel quantum effects and potential applications in low-power electronics, thermoelectrics and spintronics. However, investigating the electronic states of TI NWs is complicated, due to their small lateral size, especially at room temperature. Here, we perform scanning probe based nanoscale imaging to resolve the local surface potential landscapes of Bi2Te3 nanowires (NWs) at 300 K. We found equipotential rings around the NWs perimeter that we attribute to azimuthal 1D modes. Along the NW axis, these modes are altered, forming potential ripples in the local density of states, due to intrinsic disturbances. Potential mapping of electrically biased NWs enabled us to accurately determine their conductivity which was found to increase with the decrease of NW diameter, consistent with surface dominated transport. Our results demonstrate that TI NWs can pave the way to both exotic quantum states and novel electronic devices.

Quantum confinement of the Dirac surface states in topological-insulator nanowires.

Project description:The non-trivial topology of three-dimensional topological insulators dictates the appearance of gapless Dirac surface states. Intriguingly, when made into a nanowire, quantum confinement leads to a peculiar gapped Dirac sub-band structure. This gap is useful for, e.g., future Majorana qubits based on TIs. Furthermore, these sub-bands can be manipulated by a magnetic flux and are an ideal platform for generating stable Majorana zero modes, playing a key role in topological quantum computing. However, direct evidence for the Dirac sub-bands in TI nanowires has not been reported so far. Here, using devices fabricated from thin bulk-insulating (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 nanowires we show that non-equidistant resistance peaks, observed upon gate-tuning the chemical potential across the Dirac point, are the unique signatures of the quantized sub-bands. These TI nanowires open the way to address the topological mesoscopic physics, and eventually the Majorana physics when proximitized by an s-wave superconductor.

Induced unconventional superconductivity on the surface states of Bi2Te3 topological insulator.

Project description:Topological superconductivity is central to a variety of novel phenomena involving the interplay between topologically ordered phases and broken-symmetry states. The key ingredient is an unconventional order parameter, with an orbital component containing a chiral p x + ip y wave term. Here we present phase-sensitive measurements, based on the quantum interference in nanoscale Josephson junctions, realized by using Bi2Te3 topological insulator. We demonstrate that the induced superconductivity is unconventional and consistent with a sign-changing order parameter, such as a chiral p x + ip y component. The magnetic field pattern of the junctions shows a dip at zero externally applied magnetic field, which is an incontrovertible signature of the simultaneous existence of 0 and π coupling within the junction, inherent to a non trivial order parameter phase. The nano-textured morphology of the Bi2Te3 flakes, and the dramatic role played by thermal strain are the surprising key factors for the display of an unconventional induced order parameter.

Giant magnetochiral anisotropy from quantum-confined surface states of topological insulator nanowires.

Project description:Wireless technology relies on the conversion of alternating electromagnetic fields into direct currents, a process known as rectification. Although rectifiers are normally based on semiconductor diodes, quantum mechanical non-reciprocal transport effects that enable a highly controllable rectification were recently discovered1-9. One such effect is magnetochiral anisotropy (MCA)6-9, in which the resistance of a material or a device depends on both the direction of the current flow and an applied magnetic field. However, the size of rectification possible due to MCA is usually extremely small because MCA relies on inversion symmetry breaking that leads to the manifestation of spin-orbit coupling, which is a relativistic effect6-8. In typical materials, the rectification coefficient γ due to MCA is usually ∣γ∣ ≲ 1 A-1 T-1 (refs. 8-12) and the maximum values reported so far are ∣γ∣ ≈ 100 A-1 T-1 in carbon nanotubes13 and ZrTe5 (ref. 14). Here, to overcome this limitation, we artificially break the inversion symmetry via an applied gate voltage in thin topological insulator (TI) nanowire heterostructures and theoretically predict that such a symmetry breaking can lead to a giant MCA effect. Our prediction is confirmed via experiments on thin bulk-insulating (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 (BST) TI nanowires, in which we observe an MCA consistent with theory and ∣γ∣ ≈ 100,000 A-1 T-1, a very large MCA rectification coefficient in a normal conductor.

Controlling Topological States in Topological/Normal Insulator Heterostructures.

Project description:We have performed a systematic investigation of the nature of the nontrivial interface states in topological/normal insulator (TI/NI) heterostructures. On the basis of first principles and a recently developed scheme to construct ab initio effective Hamiltonian matrices from density functional theory calculations, we studied systems of realistic sizes with high accuracy and control over the relevant parameters such as TI and NI band alignment, NI gap, and spin-orbit coupling strength. Our results for IV-VI compounds show the interface gap tunability by appropriately controlling the NI thickness, which can be explored for device design. Also, we verified the preservation of an in-plane spin texture in the interface-gaped topological states.

Strong nonlinear terahertz response induced by Dirac surface states in Bi2Se3 topological insulator.

Project description:Electrons with a linear energy/momentum dispersion are called massless Dirac electrons and represent the low-energy excitations in exotic materials such as graphene and topological insulators. Dirac electrons are characterized by notable properties such as a high mobility, a tunable density and, in topological insulators, a protection against backscattering through the spin-momentum locking mechanism. All those properties make graphene and topological insulators appealing for plasmonics applications. However, Dirac electrons are expected to present also a strong nonlinear optical behaviour. This should mirror in phenomena such as electromagnetic-induced transparency and harmonic generation. Here we demonstrate that in Bi2Se3 topological insulator, an electromagnetic-induced transparency is achieved under the application of a strong terahertz electric field. This effect, concomitantly determined by harmonic generation and charge-mobility reduction, is exclusively related to the presence of Dirac electron at the surface of Bi2Se3, and opens the road towards tunable terahertz nonlinear optical devices based on topological insulator materials.

Current-induced switching of proximity-induced ferromagnetic surface states in a topological insulator.

Project description:Electrical manipulation of magnetization could be an essential function for energy-efficient spintronics technology. A magnetic topological insulator, possessing a magnetically gapped surface state with spin-polarized electrons, not only exhibits exotic topological phases relevant to the quantum anomalous Hall state but also enables the electrical control of its magnetic state at the surface. Here, we demonstrate efficient current-induced switching of the surface ferromagnetism in hetero-bilayers consisting of the topological insulator (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 and the ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6, where the proximity-induced ferromagnetic surface states play two roles: efficient charge-to-spin current conversion and emergence of large anomalous Hall effect. The sign reversal of the surface ferromagnetic states with current injection is clearly observed, accompanying the nearly full magnetization reversal in the adjacent insulating Cr2Ge2Te6 layer of an optimal thickness range. The present results may facilitate an electrical control of dissipationless topological-current circuits.

Ultrafast optical control of surface and bulk magnetism in magnetic topological insulator/antiferromagnet heterostructure.

Project description:Optical control of the magnetic properties in topological insulator systems is an important step in applying these materials in ultrafast optoelectronic and spintronic schemes. In this work, we report the experimental observation of photo-induced magnetization dynamics in the magnetically doped topological insulator (MTI)/antiferromagnet (AFM) heterostructure composed of Cr-(Bi,Sb)2Te3/CrSb. Through proximity coupling to the AFM layer, the MTI displays a dramatically enhanced magnetism, with robust perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When subjected to intense laser irradiation, both surface and bulk magnetism of the MTI are weakened by laser-induced heating of the lattice, however, at the surface, the deleterious heat effect is compensated by the strengthening of Dirac-hole-mediated exchange coupling as demonstrated by an unconventional pump-fluence-dependent exchange-bias effect. Through theoretical analyses, the sizes of exchange coupling energies are estimated in the MTI/AFM bilayer structure. The fundamentally different mechanisms supporting the surface and bulk magnetic order in MTIs allow a novel and distinctive photo-induced transient magnetic state with antiparallel spin configuration, which broadens the understanding of the magnetization dynamics of MTIs under ultrashort and intense optical excitation.
