Simple 3D printed stainless steel microreactors for online mass spectrometric analysis.

ABSTRACT: A simple flow chemistry microreactor with an electrospray ionization tip for real time mass spectrometric reaction monitoring is introduced. The microreactor was fabricated by a laser-based additive manufacturing technique from acid-resistant stainless steel 316L. The functionality of the microreactor was investigated by using an inverse electron demand Diels-Alder and subsequent retro Diels-Alder reaction for testing. Challenges and problems encountered are discussed and improvements proposed. Adsorption of reagents to the rough stainless steel channel walls, short length of the reaction channel, and making a proper ESI tip present challenges, but the microreactor is potentially useful as a disposable device.

Project description:Additive Manufacturing (AM) has spread significantly in recent years, with relevant applications in many fields of research and engineering. Thanks to its distinctive production methods, AM enables the creation of parts with complex shapes that cannot be fabricated easily by employing traditional subtractive processes. 3D printing, which involves overlapping material layer by layer until the designed part is completed, shows several advantages in terms of limiting material waste, reducing production phases and postprocessing/heat treatments needs, leading to an additional benefit in terms of environmental sustainability. However, there are still limited available data on the influence of the 3D printing process on the mechanical properties of the materials that are commonly used and additional investigations are strongly demanded. So, the purpose of the present paper is to provide a useful contribution in the field of metal additive manufacturing, reporting the results of an experimental campaign carried out on 17-4 P H stainless steel, produced using selective laser melting technology. The effects of different printing orientations and scanning times on the tensile behaviour, impact strength and microhardness features of the 3D-printed products are investigated. Furthermore, the influence of an annealing heat treatment on the material mechanical performance is evaluated.

Fluorescent Fluid in 3D-Printed Microreactors for the Acceleration of Photocatalytic Reactions.

Project description:The photochemical microreactor has been a burgeoning field with important application in promoting photocatalytic reactions. The integration of light-converting media and microflow chemistry renders new opportunity for efficient utilization of light and high conversion rate. However, the flexibility of emission light wavelength regulation and the universality of the microreactor remain significant problems to be solved. Here, a photochemical microreactor filled with fluorescent fluid is fabricated by a 3D printing technique. The light-converting medium in the fluorescent fluid is used to collect and convert light, and then delivers light energy to the embedded continuous-flow reaction channels to promote the chemical reaction process. With the merits of flowability, different light-converting media can be replaced, making it a general tool for photocatalytic reactions in rapid screening, parameters optimization, and kinetic mechanism research.

Online photochemical derivatization enables comprehensive mass spectrometric analysis of unsaturated phospholipid isomers.

Project description:Mass spectrometry-based lipidomics is the primary tool for the structural analysis of lipids but the effective localization of carbon-carbon double bonds (C=C) in unsaturated lipids to distinguish C=C location isomers remains challenging. Here, we develop a large-scale lipid analysis platform by coupling online C=C derivatization through the Paternò-Büchi reaction with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. This provides rich information on lipid C=C location isomers, revealing C=C locations for more than 200 unsaturated glycerophospholipids in bovine liver among which we identify 55 groups of C=C location isomers. By analyzing tissue samples of patients with breast cancer and type 2 diabetes plasma samples, we find that the ratios of C=C isomers are much less affected by interpersonal variations than their individual abundances, suggesting that isomer ratios may be used for the discovery of lipid biomarkers.

A Binder Jet Printed, Stainless Steel Preconcentrator as an In-Line Injector of Volatile Organic Compounds.

Project description:A conventional approach to making miniature or microscale gas chromatography (GC) components relies on silicon as a base material and MEMS fabrication as manufacturing processes. However, these devices often fail in medium-to-high temperature applications due to a lack of robust fluidic interconnects and a high-yield bonding process. This paper explores the feasibility of using metal additive manufacturing (AM), which is also known as metal 3D printing, as an alternative platform to produce small-scale microfluidic devices that can operate at a temperature higher than that which polymers can withstand. Binder jet printing (BJP), one of the metal AM processes, was utilized to make stainless steel (SS) preconcentrators (PCs) with submillimeter internal features. PCs can increase the concentration of gaseous analytes or serve as an inline injector for GC or gas sensor applications. Normally, parts printed by BJP are highly porous and thus often infiltrated with low melting point metal. By adding to SS316 powder sintering additives such as boron nitride (BN), which reduces the liquidus line temperature, we produce near full-density SS PCs at sintering temperatures much lower than the SS melting temperature, and importantly without any measurable shape distortion. Conversely, the SS PC without BN remains porous after the sintering process and unsuitable for fluidic applications. Since the SS parts, unlike Si, are compatible with machining, they can be modified to work with commercial compression fitting. The PC structures as well as the connection with the fitting are leak-free with relatively high operating pressures. A flexible membrane heater along with a resistance-temperature detector is integrated with the SS PCs for thermal desorption. The proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates that the SS PC can preconcentrate and inject 0.6% headspace toluene to enhance the detector's response.

Scalable Subsecond Synthesis of Drug Scaffolds via Aryllithium Intermediates by Numbered-up 3D-Printed Metal Microreactors.

Project description:Continuous-flow microreactors enable ultrafast chemistry; however, their small capacity restricts industrial-level productivity of pharmaceutical compounds. In this work, scale-up subsecond synthesis of drug scaffolds was achieved via a 16 numbered-up printed metal microreactor (16N-PMR) assembly to render high productivity up to 20 g for 10 min operation. Initially, ultrafast synthetic chemistry of unstable lithiated intermediates in the halogen-lithium exchange reactions of three aryl halides and subsequent reactions with diverse electrophiles were carried out using a single microreactor (SMR). Larger production of the ultrafast synthesis was achieved by devising a monolithic module of 4 numbered-up 3D-printed metal microreactor (4N-PMR) that was integrated by laminating four SMRs and four bifurcation flow distributors in a compact manner. Eventually, the 16N-PMR system for the scalable subsecond synthesis of three drug scaffolds was assembled by stacking four monolithic modules of 4N-PMRs.

Development of 3D Printed Enzymatic Microreactors for Lipase-Catalyzed Reactions in Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Media.

Project description:In this study, 3D printing technology was exploited for the development of immobilized enzyme microreactors that could be used for biocatalytic processes in Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES)-based media. 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) microwell plates or tubular microfluidic reactors were modified with polyethylenimine (PEI) and lipase from Candida antarctica (CALB) was covalently immobilized in the interior of each structure. DESs were found to have a negligible effect on the activity and stability of CALB, and the system proved highly stable and reusable in the presence of DESs for the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl butyrate (p-NPB). A kinetic study under flow conditions revealed an enhancement of substrate accessibility in the presence of Betaine: Glycerol (Bet:Gly) DES, while the system was not severely affected by diffusion limitations. Incubation of microreactors in 100% Bet:Gly preserved the enzyme activity by 53% for 30 days of storage at 60 °C, while the buffer-stored sample had already been deactivated. The microfluidic enzyme reactor was efficiently used for the trans-esterification of ethyl ferulate (EF) with glycerol towards the production of glyceryl ferulate (GF), known for its antioxidant potential. The biocatalytic process under continuous flow conditions exhibited 23 times higher productivity than the batch reaction system. This study featured an effective and robust biocatalytic system with immobilized lipase that can be used both in hydrolytic and synthetic applications, while further optimization is expected to upgrade the microreactor system performance.

A Simple and Scalable Approach To Remarkably Boost the Overall Water Splitting Activity of Stainless Steel Electrocatalysts.

Project description:The stainless steel mesh (SSM) has received growing consideration as an electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Recently, the application of SSM as an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst has been more promising, while its hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity is very low, which definitely affects its overall water splitting activity. Herein, a simple chemical bath deposition (CBD) method followed by phosphorization is employed to significantly boost the overall water splitting performance of SSM. The CBD method could allow the voids between the SSM fibers to be filled with Ni and P. Electrocatalytic studies show that the CBD-treated and phosphorized stainless steel (denoted SSM-Ni-P) exhibits an HER overpotential of 149 mV, while the phosphorization-free CBD-treated SSM (denoted as SSM-Ni) delivers an OER overpotential of 223 mV, both at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. An asymmetric alkaline electrolyzer assembled based on the SSM-Ni-P cathode (HER) and SSM-Ni anode (OER) achieved an onset and 10 mA cm-2 current densities at an overall potential of 1.62 V, granting more prospects for the application of inexpensive and highly active electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting reactions.

Quantitative 3D Characterization for Kinetics of Corrosion Initiation and Propagation in Additively Manufactured Austenitic Stainless Steel.

Project description:In situ X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) is used to investigate the effects of characteristic microstructural features on the pitting initiation and propagation in austenitic stainless steel specimens prepared with laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing. In situ X-ray CT in probing the mechanism and kinetics of localized corrosion is demonstrated by immersing two LPBF specimens with different porosities in an aggressive ferric chloride solution for the evaluation of corrosion. X-ray CT images are acquired from the specimens after every 8 hours of immersion over an extended period of time (216 hours). Corrosion pit growth is then quantitatively analyzed with a data-constrained modeling method. The pitting growth mechanism of LPBF stainless steel is found to be different from that of conventional stainless steels. More specifically, the mechanism of corrosion pit initiation is closely correlated with the original lack of fusion porosity (LOF) distribution on the surface of the specimens and preferential pit propagation through the LOF pores inside the specimens. Pit growth kinetics are derived from pit volume changes determined through 3D data analysis. The pit growth kinetics in LPBF specimens are found to vary in the initial pit formation, competitive pit propagation, and the dominant pit growth stages.

Nanosecond laser coloration on stainless steel surface.

Project description:In this work, we present laser coloration on 304 stainless steel using nanosecond laser. Surface modifications are tuned by adjusting laser parameters of scanning speed, repetition rate, and pulse width. A comprehensive study of the physical mechanism leading to the appearance is presented. Microscopic patterns are measured and employed as input to simulate light-matter interferences, while chemical states and crystal structures of composites to figure out intrinsic colors. Quantitative analysis clarifies the final colors and RGB values are the combinations of structural colors and intrinsic colors from the oxidized pigments, with the latter dominating. Therefore, the engineering and scientific insights of nanosecond laser coloration highlight large-scale utilization of the present route for colorful and resistant steels.
