The Human Brain Project-Synergy between neuroscience, computing, informatics, and brain-inspired technologies.

ABSTRACT: The Human Brain Project (HBP) is a European flagship project with a 10-year horizon aiming to understand the human brain and to translate neuroscience knowledge into medicine and technology. To achieve such aims, the HBP explores the multilevel complexity of the brain in space and time; transfers the acquired knowledge to brain-derived applications in health, computing, and technology; and provides shared and open computing tools and data through the HBP European brain research infrastructure. We discuss how the HBP creates a transdisciplinary community of researchers united by the quest to understand the brain, with fascinating perspectives on societal benefits.

Collaborating neuroscience online: The case of the Human Brain Project forum.

Project description:This paper analyzes user interactions on the public-access online forum of the Human Brain Project (HBP), a major European Union-funded neuroscience research initiative, to understand the utility of the Forum for collaborative problem solving. We construct novel data using discussion forum posts and detailed user profiles on the HBP Forum. We find that HBP Forum utilization is comparable to that of a leading general-interest coding platform, and that online usage metrics quickly recovered after an initial Covid-19-related dip. Regression results show that user interactions on the Forum are more active for questions on programming and in HBP core areas. Further, Cox proportional hazard analyses show that such problems are solved faster. Forum posts with users from different countries tend to be discussed more actively but solved slower. Higher shares of administrator support tend to solve problems faster. There are no clear patterns regarding gender and seniority. Our results suggest that building novel collaborative forums can support researchers working on complex topics in challenging times.

Brain-inspired global-local learning incorporated with neuromorphic computing.

Project description:There are two principle approaches for learning in artificial intelligence: error-driven global learning and neuroscience-oriented local learning. Integrating them into one network may provide complementary learning capabilities for versatile learning scenarios. At the same time, neuromorphic computing holds great promise, but still needs plenty of useful algorithms and algorithm-hardware co-designs to fully exploit its advantages. Here, we present a neuromorphic global-local synergic learning model by introducing a brain-inspired meta-learning paradigm and a differentiable spiking model incorporating neuronal dynamics and synaptic plasticity. It can meta-learn local plasticity and receive top-down supervision information for multiscale learning. We demonstrate the advantages of this model in multiple different tasks, including few-shot learning, continual learning, and fault-tolerance learning in neuromorphic vision sensors. It achieves significantly higher performance than single-learning methods. We further implement the model in the Tianjic neuromorphic platform by exploiting algorithm-hardware co-designs and prove that the model can fully utilize neuromorphic many-core architecture to develop hybrid computation paradigm.

Brain augmentation and neuroscience technologies: current applications, challenges, ethics and future prospects.

Project description:Ever since the dawn of antiquity, people have strived to improve their cognitive abilities. From the advent of the wheel to the development of artificial intelligence, technology has had a profound leverage on civilization. Cognitive enhancement or augmentation of brain functions has become a trending topic both in academic and public debates in improving physical and mental abilities. The last years have seen a plethora of suggestions for boosting cognitive functions and biochemical, physical, and behavioral strategies are being explored in the field of cognitive enhancement. Despite expansion of behavioral and biochemical approaches, various physical strategies are known to boost mental abilities in diseased and healthy individuals. Clinical applications of neuroscience technologies offer alternatives to pharmaceutical approaches and devices for diseases that have been fatal, so far. Importantly, the distinctive aspect of these technologies, which shapes their existing and anticipated participation in brain augmentations, is used to compare and contrast them. As a preview of the next two decades of progress in brain augmentation, this article presents a plausible estimation of the many neuroscience technologies, their virtues, demerits, and applications. The review also focuses on the ethical implications and challenges linked to modern neuroscientific technology. There are times when it looks as if ethics discussions are more concerned with the hypothetical than with the factual. We conclude by providing recommendations for potential future studies and development areas, taking into account future advancements in neuroscience innovation for brain enhancement, analyzing historical patterns, considering neuroethics and looking at other related forecasts.

Neural and Synaptic Array Transceiver: A Brain-Inspired Computing Framework for Embedded Learning.

Project description:Embedded, continual learning for autonomous and adaptive behavior is a key application of neuromorphic hardware. However, neuromorphic implementations of embedded learning at large scales that are both flexible and efficient have been hindered by a lack of a suitable algorithmic framework. As a result, most neuromorphic hardware are trained off-line on large clusters of dedicated processors or GPUs and transferred post hoc to the device. We address this by introducing the neural and synaptic array transceiver (NSAT), a neuromorphic computational framework facilitating flexible and efficient embedded learning by matching algorithmic requirements and neural and synaptic dynamics. NSAT supports event-driven supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning algorithms including deep learning. We demonstrate the NSAT in a wide range of tasks, including the simulation of Mihalas-Niebur neuron, dynamic neural fields, event-driven random back-propagation for event-based deep learning, event-based contrastive divergence for unsupervised learning, and voltage-based learning rules for sequence learning. We anticipate that this contribution will establish the foundation for a new generation of devices enabling adaptive mobile systems, wearable devices, and robots with data-driven autonomy.

Memristor-based analogue computing for brain-inspired sound localization with in situ training.

Project description:The human nervous system senses the physical world in an analogue but efficient way. As a crucial ability of the human brain, sound localization is a representative analogue computing task and often employed in virtual auditory systems. Different from well-demonstrated classification applications, all output neurons in localization tasks contribute to the predicted direction, introducing much higher challenges for hardware demonstration with memristor arrays. In this work, with the proposed multi-threshold-update scheme, we experimentally demonstrate the in-situ learning ability of the sound localization function in a 1K analogue memristor array. The experimental and evaluation results reveal that the scheme improves the training accuracy by ∼45.7% compared to the existing method and reduces the energy consumption by ∼184× relative to the previous work. This work represents a significant advance towards memristor-based auditory localization system with low energy consumption and high performance.

Sharpness recognition based on synergy between bio-inspired nociceptors and tactile mechanoreceptors.

Project description:Touch and pain sensations are complementary aspects of daily life that convey crucial information about the environment while also providing protection to our body. Technological advancements in prosthesis design and control mechanisms assist amputees to regain lost function but often they have no meaningful tactile feedback or perception. In the present study, we propose a bio-inspired tactile system with a population of 23 digital afferents: 12 RA-I, 6 SA-I, and 5 nociceptors. Indeed, the functional concept of the nociceptor is implemented on the FPGA for the first time. One of the main features of biological tactile afferents is that their distal axon branches in the skin, creating complex receptive fields. Given these physiological observations, the bio-inspired afferents are randomly connected to the several neighboring mechanoreceptors with different weights to form their own receptive field. To test the performance of the proposed neuromorphic chip in sharpness detection, a robotic system with three-degree of freedom equipped with the tactile sensor indents the 3D-printed objects. Spike responses of the biomimetic afferents are then collected for analysis by rate and temporal coding algorithms. In this way, the impact of the innervation mechanism and collaboration of afferents and nociceptors on sharpness recognition are investigated. Our findings suggest that the synergy between sensory afferents and nociceptors conveys more information about tactile stimuli which in turn leads to the robustness of the proposed neuromorphic system against damage to the taxels or afferents. Moreover, it is illustrated that spiking activity of the biomimetic nociceptors is amplified as the sharpness increases which can be considered as a feedback mechanism for prosthesis protection. This neuromorphic approach advances the development of prosthesis to include the sensory feedback and to distinguish innocuous (non-painful) and noxious (painful) stimuli.

Human Microbiome Inspired Antibiotics with Improved β-Lactam Synergy against MDR Staphylococcus aureus.

Project description:The flippase MurJ is responsible for transporting the cell wall intermediate lipid II from the cytoplasm to the outside of the cell. While essential for the survival of bacteria, it remains an underexploited target for antibacterial therapy. The humimycin antibiotics are lipid II flippase (MurJ) inhibitors that were synthesized on the basis of bioinformatic predictions derived from secondary metabolite gene clusters found in the human microbiome. Here, we describe an SAR campaign around humimycin A that produced humimycin 17S. Compared to humimycin A, 17S is a more potent β-lactam potentiator, has a broader spectrum of activity, which now includes both methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE), and did not lead to any detectable resistance when used in combination with a β-lactam. Combinations of β-lactam and humimycin 17S provide a potentially useful long-term MRSA regimen.

A Unified Software/Hardware Scalable Architecture for Brain-Inspired Computing Based on Self-Organizing Neural Models.

Project description:The field of artificial intelligence has significantly advanced over the past decades, inspired by discoveries from the fields of biology and neuroscience. The idea of this work is inspired by the process of self-organization of cortical areas in the human brain from both afferent and lateral/internal connections. In this work, we develop a brain-inspired neural model associating Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) and Hebbian learning in the Reentrant SOM (ReSOM) model. The framework is applied to multimodal classification problems. Compared to existing methods based on unsupervised learning with post-labeling, the model enhances the state-of-the-art results. This work also demonstrates the distributed and scalable nature of the model through both simulation results and hardware execution on a dedicated FPGA-based platform named SCALP (Self-configurable 3D Cellular Adaptive Platform). SCALP boards can be interconnected in a modular way to support the structure of the neural model. Such a unified software and hardware approach enables the processing to be scaled and allows information from several modalities to be merged dynamically. The deployment on hardware boards provides performance results of parallel execution on several devices, with the communication between each board through dedicated serial links. The proposed unified architecture, composed of the ReSOM model and the SCALP hardware platform, demonstrates a significant increase in accuracy thanks to multimodal association, and a good trade-off between latency and power consumption compared to a centralized GPU implementation.

Semiconductor-inspired design principles for superconducting quantum computing.

Project description:Superconducting circuits offer tremendous design flexibility in the quantum regime culminating most recently in the demonstration of few qubit systems supposedly approaching the threshold for fault-tolerant quantum information processing. Competition in the solid-state comes from semiconductor qubits, where nature has bestowed some very useful properties which can be utilized for spin qubit-based quantum computing. Here we begin to explore how selective design principles deduced from spin-based systems could be used to advance superconducting qubit science. We take an initial step along this path proposing an encoded qubit approach realizable with state-of-the-art tunable Josephson junction qubits. Our results show that this design philosophy holds promise, enables microwave-free control, and offers a pathway to future qubit designs with new capabilities such as with higher fidelity or, perhaps, operation at higher temperature. The approach is also especially suited to qubits on the basis of variable super-semi junctions.

Eleven quick tips for architecting biomedical informatics workflows with cloud computing.

Project description:Cloud computing has revolutionized the development and operations of hardware and software across diverse technological arenas, yet academic biomedical research has lagged behind despite the numerous and weighty advantages that cloud computing offers. Biomedical researchers who embrace cloud computing can reap rewards in cost reduction, decreased development and maintenance workload, increased reproducibility, ease of sharing data and software, enhanced security, horizontal and vertical scalability, high availability, a thriving technology partner ecosystem, and much more. Despite these advantages that cloud-based workflows offer, the majority of scientific software developed in academia does not utilize cloud computing and must be migrated to the cloud by the user. In this article, we present 11 quick tips for architecting biomedical informatics workflows on compute clouds, distilling knowledge gained from experience developing, operating, maintaining, and distributing software and virtualized appliances on the world's largest cloud. Researchers who follow these tips stand to benefit immediately by migrating their workflows to cloud computing and embracing the paradigm of abstraction.
