ABSTRACT: Objective
This descriptive study reveals how nurses working in public hospitals rated their practice environments with respect to nurse-friendly hospital criteria.Methods
This study was conducted on 460 nurses volunteering to participate this study among 735 nurses working in inpatient wards of three public hospitals. Data were collected using a personal information form and the Adapted Nursing Work Index-Revised. Numbers, percentages, means and standard deviations, t-test and one-way variance analysis were used to evaluate the data.Results
Among the nurse-friendly hospital criteria, 'control of nursing practice', 'middle management accountability' and 'quality initiatives' had the highest mean scores, and 'competitive wages' had the lowest mean score. The assessments of the nurses presented statistically significant differences with respect to personal and occupational variables.Conclusion
The nurses found most of the nurse-friendly hospital criteria adequate, but they believed that several areas needed improvement.

Project description:Health behaviour refers to actions undertaken by a person who perceives self to be ill for the purpose of finding an appropriate remedy. Nurses as gate keepers of health are expected to seek formal treatment when they are taken ill because this is what they teach their patients. Nurses' working conditions all over the world are described as squalid with long working hours and workload. This scenario predisposes them to occupational health hazards and at the same time denies them time for self-care. Although nurses are knowledgeable about disease and its treatment and have access to health care, they engage in self-treatment in contrast to what they teach patients. Health behaviour among nurses in Kakamega County was investigated using a cross-sectional design. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and subjected to bivariate and logistic regression analyses. The study found that health behaviour of nurses in Kakamega County is below expectation, as 33% (n = 61) engaged in voluntary screening services. Further, 34.8% (n = 65) said that their health would improve if they engaged in health promotion activities. The study recommends empowering nurses to engage in positive health behaviour through education. The county should also provide affordable screening services to its nurses.

Project description:This study aimed to describe the status and related factors of evidence-based practice (EBP) competency among nurses in China. A convenience sample of 1036 nurses were recruited from 13 public hospitals in Shanghai through an anonymous online survey. Nurses' demographic data, working data, and evidence-based nursing (EBN)-related conditions were collected by a structured questionnaire and EBP competency was assessed using the Chinese version of Evidence-based Nursing Competency Rating Scale (EBNCRS). The original score of EBNCRS among nurses was not good. The original score of evidence searching, critical appraisal, and synthesis subscale was lower than the original score of evidence transfer, situation assessment, and evidence implementation subscale. Nurses' age, hospital level, and perceived EBN knowledge were identified as significant related factors of EBP competency. There is an urgent need to upgrade the EBP competency of nurses in Shanghai, especially competency in evidence transfer, situation assessment, and evidence implementation.

Project description:BackgroundNursing documentation documents the everyday activities of nursing care that are planned and implemented on individual patients by nurses of different educational statuses. Documentation of nursing activities is the key source of clinical information to meet professional and legal requirements. Although nursing documentation is an important part of nursing practice, it is commonly undone by nurses working with patients for different reasons.ObjectiveTo assess the documentation practice and their associated factors among nurses working in public hospitals in the Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 402 nurses and a simple random sampling technique was used to select participants. Data were collected using a pretested structured self-administered questionnaire adapted from previous studies. Statistical Package for the Social Science version 26 was used for data entry and analysis. Independent variables with p-value < 0.25 from bivariable logistic regression were entered into the multivariable logistic regression method and significant associations were obtained at an adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval and p-value < 0.05.ResultsIn this study, the good documentation practice among nurses was 42% [95% confidence interval (CI), 37.2-46.8]. There was a statistically significant relationship between documentation practice and age [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 2.590 (95% CI: 1.4-4.79)], educational status [AOR: 2.248 (95% CI: 1.13-4.48)], hospital level [AOR: 4.185 (95% CI: 2.63-6.72)], work experience (2-5 years and > 5 years) [AOR: 4.066 (95% CI: 1.55-10.64)] and [AOR: 5.395 (95% CI: 1.97-14.81)] respectively and in-service training [AOR: 0.582 (95% CI: 0.366-0.923)].Conclusion and recommendationsThis study demonstrated that the good practice of documentation among nurses was found to be low. Age, educational status, working in comprehensive specialized hospitals, work experience, and having in-service training had significant associations with documentation practice. It is very important to plan and intervene with different strategies, such as providing training for young nurses, nurses with low educational status, nurses working in primary hospitals, and nurses with less than two years of work experience on documentation standards, to create positive attitudes and enhance their knowledge.

Project description:BackgroundNursing documentation is an essential component of nursing practice and has the potential to improve patient care outcomes. Poor documentation of nursing care activities among nurses has been shown to have negative impacts on healthcare quality.ObjectiveTo assess the nursing documentation practice and its associated factors among nurses working in the North Shewa Zone public hospitals, Ethiopia.MethodAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the North Shewa Zone public hospitals. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 421 nurses. A pretested, structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to gather the data. Data were entered into Epi Data version 3.1, and SPSS version 25 was used for further analysis. Binary logistic regressions were performed to identify the independent predictors of nursing documentation practice. Adjusted odds ratio was calculated and a p-value less than 0.05 with 95% confidence interval (CI) was considered as statistically significant.ResultA total of 421 respondents took part, giving the survey a 100% response rate. The overall good practice of nursing care documentation was 51.1%, 95% CI (46.6, 55.8). In addition, 43.2%, 95% CI (38.5, 48.0) and 35.6%, 95% CI (30.9, 40.1), of nurses had good knowledge of and favorable attitudes toward nursing care documentation. Availability of operational standards for nursing documentation [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.76; 95% CI: 1.18, 2.64], availability of documenting sheets (AOR = 1.51; 95% CI: 1.01, 2.29), and a monitoring system (AOR = 1.61; 95% CI: 1.07, 2.41) were significantly associated with nursing care documentation practice.ConclusionNearly half of nursing care was not documented. The practice of nursing care documentation was significantly influenced by the availability of operational standards, documenting sheets, and monitoring systems. To improve the documentation practice, a continuous monitoring system and access to operational standards and documenting sheets are needed.

Project description:ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the perception of caring behaviors and associated factors among nurses and midwives who provided maternal health care services at Sidama region public hospitals, Hawassa, Ethiopia.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional study design was used on a sample of 269 nurses and midwives working in maternity wards in Sidama region public hospitals. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with nurses' and midwives' perceptions of caring behaviors.ResultsTotally 261 nurses and midwives participated the survey. Based on the mean score, participants' perception of caring behavior was classified as higher and lower. According to this study, 75.1% (196/261) of nurses and midwives demonstrated a higher perception of caring behavior. Respondents' age, professional satisfaction, personal satisfaction, midwife/nurse-doctor relationship and workload were significantly associated with their perception of caring behavior.ConclusionsAssessing the nurses' and midwives' perception of caring behavior and related factors is crucial for providing high-quality nursing and midwifery interventions. It is suggested to create a positive and conducive caring behavior in the organization by reducing excessive workload of nurses and midwives, as well as enhancing nurse/midwife-doctor relationship, and increasing their job satisfaction by providing recognition and reward will improve nurses' and midwives' caring behavior.

Project description:ObjectiveRelative to explicit absenteeism, nurses' presenteeism has a more lasting impact and is more harmful and costly. This study aimed to explore the relationship between work-family conflict, perceived social support, and presenteeism and whether perceived social support mediates the relationship between work-family conflict and presenteeism among ICU nurses working on shifts in Chinese public hospitals.Materials and methodsA cross-sectional research design was conducted from January to April 2023 in Sichuan Province, China. A total of 609 valid questionnaires were collected. The questionnaires contained information on demographic characteristics, the Work-Family Conflict (WFC) scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), and Stanford Presenteeism Scale-6 (SPS-6). Multiple stratified regression was used to explore the mediating role of perceived social support between work-family conflict and presenteeism. The mediating effect of perceived social support in work-family conflict and presenteeism was tested by Model 4 in the PROCESS 4.1 macro program in SPSS.ResultsA total of 609 nurses were included in this study, and the mean presenteeism score for ICU nurses working on shifts was 16.01 ± 4.293 (Mean ± SD), with high presenteeism accounting for 58.46%. After controlling for sociodemographic characteristic variables, work-family conflict was positively associated with presenteeism, explaining 7.7% of the variance. High perceived social support was related to low presenteeism, explaining 11.5% of the variance. Perceived social support mediated the association between work-family conflict and presenteeism among ICU nurses working on shifts.ConclusionsChinese shift-work ICU nurses' high presenteeism scores deserve managers' attention. Work-family conflict is a significant predictor of nurses' presenteeism. Perceived social support is essential in improving nurses' work-family conflict and mediates the relationship between work-family conflict and presenteeism. Improving social support can reduce the impact of work-family conflict on presenteeism among nurses working shifts.

Project description:BackgroundWorkplace violence is one of the global health concerns. Although nurses are the backbone of the health care provision, they are highly subjected to workplace violence in healthcare. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of evidence on the extent of workplace violence against nurses in Ethiopia in general and Eastern Ethiopia in particular. Hence, this study aimed to assess the extent of workplace violence against nurses and its associated factors among nurse professionals working at public hospitals in eastern Ethiopia.MethodsHospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 603 nurses working in public hospitals in eastern Ethiopia. Nurses were recruited using a simple random sampling method at their workplace (health facilities). A pretested self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive, binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed. The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to declare significant association.ResultsAmong the 620 estimated sample, 603(97.3%) of the nurses gave consent and completed the self-administered questionnaire. The prevalence of workplace violence against nurse professionals in the last 12 months was 64.0% (95%CI: 60.2-67.7%). Nurses who were working in surgical (AOR: 2.30, 95%CI: 1.01-5.26), psychiatric (AOR: 3.06, 95%CI: 1.11-8.46), emergency (AOR: 3.62, 95%CI: 1.46-8.98), and medical wards (AOR: 5.20, 95%CI: 2.40-11.27); being worried of workplace violence (AOR: 1.71, 95%CI: 1.09-2.69); witnessed of physical workplace violence (AOR: 5.31, 95%CI: 3.28-8.59); claimed "absence/not-aware" of reporting procedure on workplace violence (AOR: 2.24, 95%CI: 1.45-3.46); and claimed "absence/not-aware" of institutional policies against workplace violence (AOR: 2.68, 95%CI: 1.73-4.13) were factors associated with nurses' experience of workplace violence in eastern Ethiopia.ConclusionsWorkplace violence against nurses was found to be unacceptably high in the study area (eastern Ethiopia). We suggest that stakeholders could work on early risk identification and management of violent incidents, establish violence reporting and sanction mechanisms using contextual strategies to prevent workplace violence against nurse professionals.

Project description:AimTo examine the nature and prevalence of Cambodian nurses' work hours and overtime and related factors BACKGROUND: The chronic shortage of nursing workforce is a major cause of overtime among nurses.IntroductionNursing shortage and working overtime among nurses negatively affect nurse and patient outcomes, but nurses' work hours and overtime in Cambodia have not been comprehensively examined.MethodsA multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in four Cambodian hospitals. Data were collected from 253 nurses providing direct nursing care using a questionnaire. The STROBE checklist was used for reporting this study.ResultsMore than a fifth of staff nurses worked more than 48 h, which is the legal work hour limit in Cambodia. Two major reasons for working mandatory or voluntary overtime, on-call or 24-h on-call were (a) not wanting to let down colleagues and (b) able to get all work done. The number of patients cared for was related to whether or not nurses worked 48 h or more.ConclusionOvertime work and adverse nurse scheduling are common in Cambodia.Implications for nursing and health policyNurse managers and healthcare institutes in Cambodia need to monitor Cambodian nurses' work hours, which are often beyond the legal work hour limit. Moreover, it is important to understand why nurses work overtime and develop health policies, strategies, and programs that can help promote patient and nurse safety and retain qualified nursing staff. The 24-h on-call practice needs to be regulated according to the labor policy in healthcare institutes to prevent adverse nurse and patient outcomes.

Project description:BackgroundSince the quality of work life of healthcare workers is affected by various factors, an improvement in their work environment can reduce the burden on them, increasing their performance. This study aimed to identify the current problems in working environments for registered nurses (RNs), nurse aides (NAs), and caregivers using the 5th Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS), presenting measures to improve working conditions by analyzing their predictors: 1) degree of exposure to work-related risk factors (musculoskeletal and mental), 2) working patterns, 3) work-family balance, 4) work situations, and 5) self-rated health.MethodsThe sampling frame was a list of apartment and general survey zones, excluding islands, dormitories, special social facilities, tourist hotels, and foreigner zones, among the total survey zones of the 2010 Population and Housing Census. The KWCS was given to 50,205 participants of various occupations, and responses from 494 RNs, 201 NAs, and 505 caregivers were extracted to compare their 1) degree of exposure to work-related risk factors (musculoskeletal and mental), 2) working pattern, 3) work-family balance, 4) work situations, and 5) self-rated health.ResultsThe response rate was 0.449. There were significant differences in all the variables (exposure to musculoskeletal and mental work-related risk factors, working pattern, work-family balance, work situations, self-rated health, and satisfaction with working conditions) among RNs, NAs, and caregivers (p < 0.001). The degree of work-related musculoskeletal and mental risk exposure was higher among caregivers and RNs than among NAs; irregular working patterns, challenges with work-family balance, and work environment satisfaction were higher among caregivers than among NAs. In addition, work situations were poorer among caregivers and NAs than among RNs. Self-rated health was the highest among caregivers, followed by RNs and NAs. The most potent predictor of self-rated health was occupation, followed by work environment satisfaction and work-family balance; the most potent predictor of work environment satisfaction was self-rated health, followed by degree of exposure to work-related musculoskeletal and mental risk factors, occupation, work-family balance, work situation, and working patterns.ConclusionThis study confirmed that a variety of factors influence work environment satisfaction. Thus, practical and realistic measures to improve work environments tailored to each healthcare occupation should be developed at the national and community levels. Further qualitative studies are needed to analyze the work environments of nurses and other care workers in depth.

Project description:Background:Healthcare workers are exposed to many different occupational stressors, some of which are related to their working conditions. While the experience of stress seems to depend on individual perceptions, some characteristics of inpatient units might influence the occurrence of emotional exhaustion among nurses. Objective:The aim of the present study was to identify characteristics of inpatient units which might be associated with high levels of emotional exhaustion among healthcare workers, nurses in this case. Methods:We conducted the present cross-sectional, exploratory and descriptive study with 108 nurses (83.8% female; average age 33 years old) allocated to inpatients units (wards and intensive care) at a university hospital in Portugal. We administered the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) emotional exhaustion subscale and collected the following data relative to the units to which the participants were allocated: 1) mortality rate; 2) number of deceased patients; 3) shortage of nurses compared to national standards; 4) occupancy rate; 5) proportion of elderly patients (>65 years old). Results:We found a positive relationship between high levels of emotional exhaustion among nurses and very high number of deceased patients (p=0.012), high fatality rate (p=0.036) and high proportion of elderly patients (p=0.025). Conclusion:Very high number of deceased patients, high proportion of elderly patients and high fatality rate in inpatients units were associated with high levels of emotional exhaustion among nurses. These findings suggest that characterizing the objective conditions of inpatient units seems to be an important aspect to be considered in psychosocial risk management programs.
