Expandable Layered Hybrid Materials Based on Individual 1D Metalorganic Nanoribbons.

ABSTRACT: Different metalorganic lamellar hybrid materials based on associated nanoribbons were synthesized by the use of alkyl-benzyl monocarboxylate spacers, containing alkyl tails with variable lengths, which acted like structural growing inhibitors. These molecular agents were perpendicularly located and coordinated to aluminium nodes in the interlayer space, controlling the separation between individual structure sub-units. The hybrid materials were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical and thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM)/transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showing their physicochemical properties. The specific capacity of the metalorganic materials to be exfoliated through post-synthesis treatments, using several solvents due to the presence of 1D structure sub-units and a marked hydrophobic nature, was also evidenced.

Single-Layered Hybrid Materials Based on 1D Associated Metalorganic Nanoribbons for Controlled Release of Pheromones.

Project description:A new family of stable layered organic-inorganic materials has been prepared, in one-step solvothermal process. They are based on an ordered nickel cluster-type nanoribbons separated from each other by specific alkyl (heptyl- or dodecyl-) arylic mono-carboxylate moieties acting as molecular spacers, perpendicular to the 1D inorganic chains. These organic spacers contain hydrocarbon tails with different length which control the separation level between inorganic 1D sub-units, inhibiting the 3D growth of conventional DUT-8-type metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The lamellar nature of the materials formed was studied and confirmed by different characterization techniques, showing the structural location of individual organic and inorganic building units. They have been successfully used as a long-lasting biodegradable and water-proof materials for controlled release of chemicals, such as pheromones for sustainable treatment of insect plagues.

A theoretical prediction of super high-performance thermoelectric materials based on MoS2/WS2 hybrid nanoribbons.

Project description:Modern society is hungry for electrical power. To improve the efficiency of energy harvesting from heat, extensive efforts seek high-performance thermoelectric materials that possess large differences between electronic and thermal conductance. Here we report a super high-performance material of consisting of MoS2/WS2 hybrid nanoribbons discovered from a theoretical investigation using nonequilibrium Green's function methods combined with first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The hybrid nanoribbons show higher efficiency of energy conversion than the MoS2 and WS2 nanoribbons due to the fact that the MoS2/WS2 interface reduces lattice thermal conductivity more than the electron transport. By tuning the number of the MoS2/WS2 interfaces, a figure of merit ZT as high as 5.5 is achieved at a temperature of 600 K. Our results imply that the MoS2/WS2 hybrid nanoribbons have promising applications in thermal energy harvesting.

1D and 2D hybrid polymers based on zinc phenylphosphates: synthesis, characterization and applications in electroactive materials.

Project description:The synthesis, structure and properties of three hybrid polymers based on zinc arylphosphates are described in this study. Zinc bis(diphenylphosphate) (ZnDPhP) was obtained as needle-like crystals containing hexagonally packed, homochiral 1 ∞[Zn(DPhP)2/2] helical chains. The XRD and DSC studies revealed that upon heating, ZnDPhP undergoes a reversible thermal transition at ca. 160 °C with expansion mainly perpendicular to its c-axis. Zinc phenylphosphate hydrate (ZnMPhP-H) formed plate-like particles with an average thickness of less than 1 μm and much thinner nanolayers with a basal spacing of 15.5 Å. ZnMPhP-H was easily and reversibly dehydrated to its anhydrous form, ZnMPhP-A, which exhibited a somewhat larger basal spacing of 16.5 Å and the capacity for amine intercalation. The thermal decomposition of ZnDPhP or ZnMPhP-A began around 250 °C, resulting in the formation of solid mixtures of zinc phosphates and electron-conducting carbonaceous phases. The bulk electrical conductivities of the poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based composites containing the ZnDPhP pyrolyzates reached 0.1-0.2 S cm-1. Upon mixing with silicone oil, all the synthesized hybrid polymers formed fluids that exhibit significant negative electrorheological effects and have potential for application in electroresponsive smart materials. The application of an electric field during the crosslinking of such systems affected the viscoelastic properties of the resultant solid composites, while the cured systems showed rather small electrorheological effects.

Nanocomposites of Fe(II)-Based Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer and a Layered Inorganic-Organic Hybrid for Improved Electrochromic Materials.

Project description:Fe-based metallo-supramolecular polymer (polyFe), composed of Fe(II) ions and bis(terpyridyl)benzene, is known as a good electrochromic (EC) material. For the first time, to improve the EC properties, we prepared nanocomposites comprising polyFe and a layered inorganic-imidazoline covalently bonded hybrid (LIIm) by simply mixing them in methanol and then examined the effect of the nanocomposition on EC properties. The obtained blue/purple-colored composites (polyFe/LIIm composites) were demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to comprise a structure of LIIm nanoparticles coated with amorphous polyFe. Interestingly, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements suggested that there was no intercalation of polyFe in the interlayer space of LIIm. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy measurements demonstrated that light absorption close to 600 nm was attributed to metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) from the Fe(II) ion to the bisterpyridine ligand and was influenced by LIIm in the composites. The composites exhibited a pair of redox waves, assigned to the redox between Fe(II) and Fe(III), in the cyclic voltammograms; moreover, the composites were estimated to be diffusion controlled. Thin composite films demonstrated reversible EC changes, triggered by the redox reaction of the metal. Furthermore, the results show that the nano-scale composition of the metallo-supramolecular polymers with LIIm can effectively improve the memory properties without reducing the contrast in transmittance (ΔT) of 70-76% in EC changes after applying 1.2 V vs. Ag/Ag+. The EC properties varied with varying ratios (3/0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5) of the polyFe/LIIm, and the ratio of 3/1 exhibited the longest memory and largest MLCT absorption peak among composites. The results show that the polyFe/LIIm composites are useful EC materials for dimming glass applications, such as smart windows.

Self-Assembly of 1D/2D Hybrid Nanostructures Consisting of a Cd(II) Coordination Polymer and NiAl-Layered Double Hydroxides.

Project description:The preparation and characterization of a novel hybrid material based on the combination of a 2D-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and a 1D-coordination polymer (1D-CP) has been achieved through a simple mixture of suspensions of both building blocks via an exfoliation/restacking approach. The hybrid material has been thoroughly characterized demonstrating that the 1D-CP moieties are intercalated as well as adsorbed on the surface of the LDH, giving rise to a layered assembly with the coexistence of the functionalities of their initial constituents. This hybrid represents the first example of the assembly of 1D/2D nanomaterials combining LDH with CP and opens the door for a plethora of different functional hybrid systems.

Stimuli-responsive hybrid materials: breathing in magnetic layered double hydroxides induced by a thermoresponsive molecule.

Project description:A hybrid magnetic multilayer material of micrometric size, with highly crystalline hexagonal crystals consisting of CoAl-LDH ferromagnetic layers intercalated with thermoresponsive 4-(4-anilinophenylazo)benzenesulfonate (AO5) molecules diluted (ratio 9 : 1) with a flexible sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) surfactant has been obtained. The resulting material exhibits thermochromism attributable to the isomerization between the azo (prevalent at room temperature) and the hydrazone (favoured at higher temperatures) tautomers, leading to a thermomechanical response. In fact, these crystals exhibited thermally induced motion triggering remarkable changes in the crystal morphology and volume. In situ variable temperature XRD of these thin hybrids shows that the reversible change into the two tautomers is reflected in a shift of the position of the diffraction peaks at high temperatures towards lower interlayer spacing for the hydrazone form, as well as a broadening of the peaks reflecting lower crystallinity and ordering due to non-uniform spacing between the layers. These structural variations between room temperature (basal spacing (BS) = 25.91 Å) and 100 °C (BS = 25.05 Å) are also reflected in the magnetic properties of the layered double hydroxide (LDH) due to the variation of the magnetic coupling between the layers. Overall, our study constitutes one of the few examples showing fully reversible thermo-responsive breathing in a 2D hybrid material. In addition, the magnetic response of the hybrid can be modulated due to the thermotropism of the organic component that, by influencing the distance and in-plane correlation of the inorganic LDH, modulates the magnetism of the CoAl-LDH sheets in a certain range.

Interface effects in hybrid hBN-graphene nanoribbons.

Project description:We analyze the electronic properties of a hybrid graphene-BN nanoribbon system, using a Hubbard model Hamiltonian within a mean field approximation. Due to the different electronegativities of the boron and nitrogen atoms, an electric field is induced across the zigzag graphene strip, breaking the spin degeneracy of the electronic band structure. Optimal tight-binding parameters are found from first-principles calculations. Edge potentials are proposed as corrections for the on-site energies, modeling the BN-graphene nanoribbon interfaces. We show that half-metallic responses in the hybrid systems may be driven with the help of an external electric field. We also study the role of defects across the graphene nanoribbon and at the h-BN/graphene interface regions. Modulations on the spin-dependent gaps may be achieved depending on the nature and position of the defect, constituting a way towards spin-gap engineering by means of spatial doping.

Ce-Containing MgAl-Layered Double Hydroxide-Graphene Oxide Hybrid Materials as Multifunctional Catalysts for Organic Transformations.

Project description:The combination of layered double hydroxides (LDH) with graphene oxide (GO) enables the formation of nanohybrids with improved properties. This work focuses on the structural and catalytic properties of Ce-containing MgAl LDH-GO composites bearing different concentrations of GO in the range of 5-25 wt.%. The synthesis of the composites was performed by co-precipitating the LDH phase in the presence of GO, while their characterization was performed using XRF, XRD, DRIFT, Raman, SEM, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and acidity-basicity measurements. The LDH-GO composites, showing redox, basic, and acid catalytic functions, were tested in two different types of organic transformations: (i) Knoevenagel condensation and (ii) one-pot cascade oxidation-Knoevenagel condensation. (i) The cinnamic acid was synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde with diethylmalonate. The composites showed catalytic performances in strong contrast to neat LDH or GO, suggesting a synergistic interaction between the two components. During Knoevenagel condensation, the catalytic activity increased with the GO content in the hybrids up to 15 wt.% and decreased afterwards. (ii) 2-Benzoyl-3-phenylacrylonitrile was synthesized by the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol followed by the Knoevenagel condensation with benzoyl acetonitrile using three different non-polar solvents, i.e., toluene, benzene, and mesitylene. The conversion of benzyl alcohol was higher for the hybrid materials compared to the individual components but decreased with the increase of the graphene oxide concentration.

From Cellulosic Based Liquid Crystalline Sheared Solutions to 1D and 2D Soft Materials.

Project description:Liquid crystalline cellulosic-based solutions described by distinctive properties are at the origin of different kinds of multifunctional materials with unique characteristics. These solutions can form chiral nematic phases at rest, with tuneable photonic behavior, and exhibit a complex behavior associated with the onset of a network of director field defects under shear. Techniques, such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Rheology coupled with NMR (Rheo-NMR), rheology, optical methods, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Wide Angle X-rays Scattering (WAXS), were extensively used to enlighten the liquid crystalline characteristics of these cellulosic solutions. Cellulosic films produced by shear casting and fibers by electrospinning, from these liquid crystalline solutions, have regained wider attention due to recognition of their innovative properties associated to their biocompatibility. Electrospun membranes composed by helical and spiral shape fibers allow the achievement of large surface areas, leading to the improvement of the performance of this kind of systems. The moisture response, light modulated, wettability and the capability of orienting protein and cellulose crystals, opened a wide range of new applications to the shear casted films. Characterization by NMR, X-rays, tensile tests, AFM, and optical methods allowed detailed characterization of those soft cellulosic materials. In this work, special attention will be given to recent developments, including, among others, a moisture driven cellulosic motor and electro-optical devices.

Highly Stable Thin Films Based on Novel Hybrid 1D (PRSH)PbX3 Pseudo-Perovskites.

Project description:In this study, the structure and morphology, as well as time, ultraviolet radiation, and humidity stability of thin films based on newly developed 1D (PRSH)PbX3 (X = Br, I) pseudo-perovskite materials, containing 1D chains of face-sharing haloplumbate octahedra, are investigated. All films are strongly crystalline already at room temperature, and annealing does not promote further crystallization or film reorganization. The film microstructure is found to be strongly influenced by the anion type and, to a lesser extent, by the DMF/DMSO solvent volume ratio used during film deposition by spin-coating. Comparison of specular X-ray diffraction and complementary grazing incidence X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the use of DMF/DMSO mixed solvents promotes the strengthening of a dominant 100 or 210 texturing, as compared the case of pure DMF, and that the haloplumbate chains always lie in a plane parallel to the substrate. Under specific DMF/DMSO solvent volume ratios, the prepared films are found to be highly stable in time (up to seven months under fluxing N2 and in the dark) and to highly moist conditions (up to 25 days at 78% relative humidity). Furthermore, for representative (PRSH)PbX3 films, resistance against ultraviolet exposure (λ = 380 nm) is investigated, showing complete stability after irradiation for up to 15 h at a power density of 600 mW/cm2. These results make such thin films interesting for highly stable perovskite-based (opto)electronic devices.
