One-Step Synthesis of a Self-Supported Copper Phosphide Nanobush for Overall Water Splitting.

ABSTRACT: Developing cheap, stable, and efficient electrocatalysts is of extreme importance in the effort to replace noble metal electrocatalysts for use in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We report a three-dimensional self-supported Cu₃P nanobush (NB) catalyst directly grown on a copper mesh via a one-step method. This nanostructure exhibits a superior catalytic activity of achieving a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at 120 mV and exhibits a long-term stability in acid solutions. It shows a Tafel slope of 72 mV dec^-1 and an onset potential of -44 mV. This catalyst displays a good catalytic activity in basic electrolytes, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at the overpotential values of 252 and 380 mV for HER and OER, respectively. The bifunctional Cu₃P NB/Cu catalyst exhibits better catalytic performances than the Pt/C and IrO₂ catalysts in a two-electrode electrolyzer for overall water splitting.

High-performance bifunctional porous non-noble metal phosphide catalyst for overall water splitting.

Project description:Water electrolysis is an advanced energy conversion technology to produce hydrogen as a clean and sustainable chemical fuel, which potentially stores the abundant but intermittent renewable energy sources scalably. Since the overall water splitting is an uphill reaction in low efficiency, innovative breakthroughs are desirable to greatly improve the efficiency by rationally designing non-precious metal-based robust bifunctional catalysts for promoting both the cathodic hydrogen evolution and anodic oxygen evolution reactions. We report a hybrid catalyst constructed by iron and dinickel phosphides on nickel foams that drives both the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions well in base, and thus substantially expedites overall water splitting at 10?mA?cm-2 with 1.42?V, which outperforms the integrated iridium (IV) oxide and platinum couple (1.57?V), and are among the best activities currently. Especially, it delivers 500?mA?cm-2 at 1.72?V without decay even after the durability test for 40 h, providing great potential for large-scale applications.

MOF-Derived Ultrathin Cobalt Molybdenum Phosphide Nanosheets for Efficient Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting.

Project description:The development of high-performance and cost-effective earth-abundant transition metal-based electrocatalysts is of major interest for several key energy technologies, including water splitting. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultrathin CoMoP nanosheets through a simple ion etching and phosphorization method. The obtained catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity and stability towards oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER), with overpotentials down to 273 and 89 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. The produced CoMoP nanosheets are also characterized by very small Tafel slopes, 54.9 and 69.7 mV dec-1 for OER and HER, respectively. When used as both cathode and anode electrocatalyst in the overall water splitting reaction, CoMoP-based cells require just 1.56 V to reach 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media. This outstanding performance is attributed to the proper composition, weak crystallinity and two-dimensional nanosheet structure of the electrocatalyst.

Cobalt Phosphide-Embedded Reduced Graphene Oxide as a Bifunctional Catalyst for Overall Water Splitting.

Project description:It is highly desirable to design high-efficiency stable and low-price catalysts in the electrocatalysis field. Herein, we reported a cobalt phosphide (Co2P)-loaded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite catalyst (rGO/Co2P) prepared via the convenient hydrothermal and H2 reduction methods. The rGO/Co2P catalyst reduced at 800 °C (rGO/Co2P-800) shows superior electrocatalytic activities for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in 1.0 M KOH solution, achieving an overpotential of 134 and 378 mV, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Moreover, the catalyst can not only maintain stability for a long time in alkaline solution but also in acid media because of the protection of the rGO layers. The superior performance of this catalyst is attributed to the synergy between the carbon layer and transition-metal phosphides. The Co2P nanoparticles have a high degree of dispersion, which prevents agglomeration, thereby exposing more active sites. Moreover, rGO protects the exposed metal particles while providing more electroconductivity to the material. This work provides an efficient route for the development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent performance and stability, which provides new ideas toward overall water splitting.

Stringing Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Cobalt Phosphide Composite for High-Efficiency Overall Water Splitting.

Project description:Water electrolysis is an emerging energy conversion technology, which is significant for efficient hydrogen (H2) production. Based on the high-activity transition metal ions and metal alloys of ultrastable bifunctional catalyst, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to achieving the energy conversion method by overall water splitting (OWS). This study reports that the Co-based coordination polymer (ZIF-67) anchoring on an indium-organic framework (InOF-1) composite (InOF-1@ZIF-67) is treated followed by carbonization and phosphorization to successfully obtain CoP nanoparticles-embedded carbon nanotubes and nitrogen-doped carbon materials (CoP-InNC@CNT). As HER and OER electrocatalysts, it is demonstrated that CoP-InNC@CNT simultaneously exhibit high HER performance (overpotential of 153 mV in 0.5 m H2SO4 and 159 mV in 1.0 m KOH) and OER performance (overpotential of 270 mV in 1.0 m KOH) activities to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2. In addition, these CoP-InNC@CNT rods, as a cathode and an anode, can display an excellent OWS performance with η10 = 1.58 V and better stability, which shows the satisfying electrocatalyst for the OWS compared to control materials. This method ensures the tight and uniform growth of the fast nucleating and stable materials on substrate and can be further applied for practical electrochemical reactions.

One-step synthesis of carbon-supported electrocatalysts.

Project description:Cost-efficiency, durability, and reliability of catalysts, as well as their operational lifetime, are the main challenges in chemical energy conversion. Here, we present a novel, one-step approach for the synthesis of Pt/C hybrid material by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD). The platinum loading, degree of oxidation, and the very narrow particle size distribution are precisely adjusted in the Pt/C hybrid material due to the simultaneous deposition of platinum and carbon during the process. The as-synthesized Pt/C hybrid materials are promising electrocatalysts for use in fuel cell applications as they show significantly improved electrochemical long-term stability compared to the industrial standard HiSPEC 4000. The PE-CVD process is furthermore expected to be extendable to the general deposition of metal-containing carbon materials from other commercially available metal acetylacetonate precursors.

Carved nanoframes of cobalt-iron bimetal phosphide as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient overall water splitting.

Project description:Water electrolysis for hydrogen production has long been regarded as an ideal tactic for renewable energy conversion and storage, but is impeded by the sluggish kinetics of both the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, which are therefore in urgent need for high-performance but low-cost electrocatalysts. Herein, nanoframes of transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with the 3D framework carved open have been demonstrated as highly potent bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting, reaching the benchmark performance of the Pt/C‖RuO2 couple, and are much superior to their nanocubic counterparts. This excellent water splitting behavior can be attributed to the enlarged active surface area, less obstructed electrolyte infiltration, promoted charge transfer, and facilitated gas release. Further through in-depth activity analysis and post-electrocatalysis characterization, special attention has been paid to the fate and role of phosphorus in the electrocatalytic process, suggesting that despite the chemical instability of the TMPs (especially under OER conditions), excellent electrocatalytic stability can still be achieved through the amorphous bimetallic hydroxides/oxides formed in situ.

Bimetallic Co-Fe sulfide and phosphide as efficient electrode materials for overall water splitting and supercapacitor.

Project description:The major center of attraction in renewable energy technology is the designing of an efficient material for both electrocatalytic and supercapacitor (SC) applications. Herein, we report the simple hydrothermal method to synthesize cobalt-iron-based nanocomposites followed by sulfurization and phosphorization. The crystallinity of nanocomposites has been confirmed using X-ray diffraction, where crystalline nature improves from as-prepared to sulfurized to phosphorized. The as-synthesized CoFe-nanocomposite requires 263 mV overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to reach a current density of 10 mA/cm2 whereas the phosphorized requires 240 mV to reach 10 mA/cm2. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for CoFe-nanocomposite exhibits 208 mV overpotential at 10 mA/cm2. Moreover, the results improved after phosphorization showing 186 mV to reach 10 mA/cm2. The specific capacitance (Csp) of as-synthesized nanocomposite is 120 F/g at 1 A/g, along with a power density of 3752 W/kg and a maximum energy density of 4.3 Wh/kg. Furthermore, the phosphorized nanocomposite shows the best performance by exhibiting 252 F/g at 1 A/g and the highest power and energy density of 4.2 kW/kg and 10.1 Wh/kg. This shows that the results get improved more than twice. The 97% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles shows cyclic stability of phosphorized CoFe. Our research thus offers cost-effective and highly efficient material for energy production and storage applications.

Laser Synthesis of Iridium Nanospheres for Overall Water Splitting.

Project description:Engineering surface structure of catalysts is an efficient way towards high catalytic performance. Here, we report on the synthesis of regular iridium nanospheres (Ir NSs), with abundant atomic steps prepared by a laser ablation technique. Atomic steps, consisting of one-atom level covering the surface of such Ir NSs, were observed by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). The prepared Ir NSs exhibited remarkably enhanced activity both for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium. As a bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting, they achieved a cell voltage of 1.535 V @ 10 mA/cm2, which is much lower than that of Pt/C-Ir/C couple (1.630 V @ 10 mA/cm2).

One-Step Electrochemical Synthesis and Surface Reconstruction of NiCoP as an Electrocatalyst for Bifunctional Water Splitting.

Project description:We adopted a simple one-step electrochemical deposition to acquire an efficient nickel cobalt phosphorus (NiCoP) catalyst, which avoided the high temperature phosphatization engineering involved in the traditional synthesis method. The effects of electrolyte composition and deposition time on electrocatalytic performance were studied systematically. The as-prepared NiCoP achieved the lowest overpotential (η10 = 111 mV in the acidic condition and η10 = 120 mV in the alkaline condition) for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Under 1 M KOH conditions, optimal oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity (η10 = 276 mV) was also observed. Furthermore, the bifunctional NiCoP catalyst enabled a high-efficiency overall water-splitting by applying an external potential of 1.69 V. The surface valence and structural evolution of NiCoP samples with slowly decaying stability under alkaline conditions are revealed by XPS. The NiCoP is reconstructed into the Ni(Co)(OH)2 (for HER) and Ni(Co)OOH (for OER) on the surface with P element loss, acting as real "active sites".

One-Dimensional CoMoP Nanostructures as Bifunctional Electrodes for Overall Water Splitting.

Project description:As high-quality substitutes for conventional catalysts, the bifunctional catalytic properties of the coating of transition-metal-based materials are pivotal for improving water-splitting efficiency. Herein, cobalt-molybdenum bimetallic phosphide nanofibers (CoMoP NFs) were synthesized via a series of facile strategies, which are divided into pyrolysis electrospun PAN and metal salts, to obtain one-dimensional morphology and a gas-solid phosphating precursor. The obtained CoMoP NFs catalyst has superior catalytic activity performance in 1M KOH. Serving as an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, the electrode of the CoMoP NFs affords different kinds of current densities at 50 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2, with low overpotentials of 362 and 391 mV, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of the CoMoP NFs mainly shows when under a low overpotential of 126 mV, which can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2. In order to further detect the stability of the catalyst, we used multiple cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry tests for OERs and HERs, which maintain performance and carry a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for longer. As an integrated high-performance bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, the CoMoP NFs only require 1.75 V@10 mA cm-2 for 40 h. This work highlights a facile method to create an electrocatalyst with fiber nanostructures which possesses excellent activity as an alkaline electrolyte.
