Efficient Charge Extraction from CdSe/ZnSe Dots-on-Plates Nanoheterostructures.

ABSTRACT: An efficient and a selective charge extraction from a new type of heterostructured material is demonstrated: the quasi-type-II structure formed upon deposition of ZnSe quantum dots on CdSe nanoplatelets, termed as CdSe/ZnSe dots-on-plates (DoPs) heterostructures. Insights into the charge extraction mechanism are gained from the present studies. Quenching experiments on nanoplatelets (NPLs) and DoPs using electron (benzoquinone) and hole (pyridine) quenchers show the possibility of electron extraction leaving behind the hole in the nanostructures. These outcomes indicate more labile electron extraction in comparison with the hole from these DoP structures vis-à-vis the plate only nanostructures, thereby enabling materials for devices requiring only one type of charges. In CdSe NPLs, the excitons are short-lived making them difficult for various applications involving charge separation. The CdSe/ZnSe DoPs could be alternate candidates for overcoming the difficulties involved with NPLs.

pH-sensitive Photoluminescence of CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots in Human Ovarian Cancer Cells.

Project description:The photoluminescence of mercaptoacetic acid (MAA)-capped CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) in SKOV-3 human ovarian cancer cells is pH-dependent, suggesting applications in which QDs serve as intracellular pH sensors. In both fixed and living cells the fluorescence intensity of intracellular MAA-capped QDs (MAA QDs) increases monotonically with increasing pH. The electrophoretic mobility of MAA QDs also increases with pH, indicating an association between surface charging and fluorescence emission. MAA dissociates from the ZnS outer shell at low pH, resulting in aggregation and loss of solubility, and this may also contribute to the MAA QD fluorescence changes observed in the intracellular environment.

Ultrafast Charge Carrier Dynamics in InP/ZnSe/ZnS Core/Shell/Shell Quantum Dots.

Project description:The excellent performance of InP/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots (CSS-QDs) in light-emitting diodes benefits from the introduction of a ZnSe midshell. Understanding the changes of ultrafast carrier dynamics caused by the ZnSe midshell is important for their optoelectronic applications. Herein, we have compared the ultrafast carrier dynamics in CSS-QDs and InP/ZnS core/shell QDs (CS-QDs) using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The results show that the ZnSe midshell intensifies the electron delocalization and prolongs the in-band relaxation time of electrons from 238 fs to 350 fs, and that of holes from hundreds of femtoseconds to 1.6 ps. We also found that the trapping time caused by deep defects increased from 25.6 ps to 76 ps, and there were significantly reduced defect emissions in CSS-QDs. Moreover, the ZnSe midshell leads to a significantly increased density of higher-energy hole states above the valence band-edge, which may reduce the probability of Auger recombination caused by the positive trion. This work enhances our understanding of the excellent performance of the CSS-QDs applied to light-emitting diodes, and is likely to be helpful for the further optimization and design of optoelectronic devices based on the CSS-QDs.

Charge Injection and Energy Transfer of Surface-Engineered InP/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots.

Project description:Surface passivation is a critical aspect of preventing surface oxidation and improving the emission properties of nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs). Recent studies have demonstrated the critical role of surface ligands in determining the performance of QD-based light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs). Herein, the underlying mechanism by which the capping ligands of InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs influence the brightness and lifetime of the QD-LEDs is investigated. The electrochemical results demonstrate that highly luminescent InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs exhibit modulated charge injection depending on the length of the surface ligand chains: short alkyl chains on the ligands are favorable for charge transport to the QDs. In addition, the correlation between the spectroscopic and XRD analyses suggests that the length of the ligand chain tunes the ligand-ligand coupling strength, thereby controlling the inter-QD energy transfer dynamics. The present findings shed new light on the crucial role of surface ligands for InP/ZnSe/ZnS QD-LED applications.

Efficient White LEDs Using Liquid-state Magic-sized CdSe Quantum Dots.

Project description:Magic clusters have attracted significant interest to explore the dynamics of quantum dot (QD) nucleation and growth. At the same time, CdSe magic-sized QDs reveal broadband emission in the visible wavelength region, which advantageously offer simple integration of a single-type of nanomaterial and high color rendering ability for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, we optimized the quantum yield of magic-sized CdSe QDs up to 22% via controlling the synthesis parameters without any shelling or post-treatment process and integrated them in liquid-state on blue LED to prevent the efficiency drop due to host-material effect. The fabricated white LEDs showed color-rendering index and luminous efficiency up to 89 and 11.7 lm/W, respectively.

Role of surface charge in determining the biological effects of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots.

Project description:The growing potential of quantum dots (QDs) in biomedical applications has provoked the urgent need to thoroughly address their interaction with biological systems. However, only limited studies have been performed to explore the effects of surface charge on the biological behaviors of QDs. In the present study, three commercially available QDs with different surface coatings were used to systematically evaluate the effects of surface charge on the cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, and in vivo biodistribution of QDs. Our results demonstrated that charged QDs entered both cancer cells and macrophages more efficiently than neutral ones, while negative QDs internalized mostly. Upon entry into cells, QDs were localized in different subcellular compartments (eg, cytoplasm and lysosomes) depending on the surface charge. Interestingly, inconsistent with the result of internalization, positive QDs but not negative QDs exhibited severe cytotoxicity, which was likely due to their disruption of cell membrane integrity, and production of reactive oxygen species. Biodistribution studies demonstrated that negative and neutral QDs preferentially distributed in the liver and the spleen, whereas positive QDs mainly deposited in the kidney with obvious uptake in the brain. In general, surface charge plays crucial roles in determining the biological interactions of QDs.

Manipulating Charge Transfer from Core to Shell in CdSe/CdS/Au Heterojunction Quantum Dots.

Project description:The photophysics of charge-transfer and recombination mechanisms in a heterojunction structure of CdSe/CdS/Au quantum dots (QDs) are studied by temperature-dependent steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL). We manipulate the charge transfer from core to shell surface by varying the tunneling barrier height resulting from temperature variation and the barrier width resulting from shell thickness variation. The charge-transfer process, which can be described by a tunneling transmission model, is manifested by two competitive recombination processes, an intrinsic exciton emission and a trap emission in the near-infrared (NIR) range. Our study establishes the photophysics foundation for the core/shell/metal application in photocatalyst and optoelectronics.

Efficient exciton generation in atomic passivated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots light-emitting devices.

Project description:We demonstrate the first-ever surface modification of green CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) using bromide anions (Br-) in cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The Br- ions reduced the interparticle spacing between the QDs and induced an effective charge balance in QD light-emitting devices (QLEDs). The fabricated QLEDs exhibited efficient charge injection because of the reduced emission quenching effect and their enhanced thin film morphology. As a result, they exhibited a maximum luminance of 71,000 cd/m2 and an external current efficiency of 6.4 cd/A, both significantly better than those of their counterparts with oleic acid surface ligands. In addition, the lifetime of the Br- treated QD based QLEDs is significantly improved due to ionic passivation at the QDs surface.

Efficient Hole Transfer from CdSe Quantum Dots Enabled by Oxygen-Deficient Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Clusters.

Project description:A limitation of the implementation of cadmium chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) in charge transfer systems is the efficient removal of photogenerated holes. Rapid hole transfer has typically required the ex situ functionalization of hole acceptors with groups that can coordinate to the surface of the QD. In addition to being synthetically limiting, this strategy also necessitates a competitive binding equilibrium between the hole acceptor and native, solubilizing ligands on the nanocrystal. Here we show that the incorporation of oxygen vacancies into polyoxovanadate-alkoxide clusters improves hole transfer kinetics by promoting surface interactions between the metal oxide assembly and the QD. Investigating the reactivity of oxygen-deficient clusters with phosphonate-capped QDs reveals reversible complexation of the POV-alkoxide with a phosphonate ligand at the nanocrystal surface. These findings reveal a new method of facilitating QD-hole acceptor association that bypasses the restrictions of exchange interactions.

The effect of surface charge on nonspecific uptake and cytotoxicity of CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots.

Project description:In this work, cytotoxicity and cellular impedance response was compared for CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with positively charged cysteamine-QDs, negatively charged dihydrolipoic acid-QDs and zwitterionic D-penicillamine-QDs exposed to canine kidney MDCKII cells. Pretreatment of cells with pharmacological inhibitors suggested that the uptake of nanoparticles was largely due to receptor-independent pathways or spontaneous entry for carboxylated and zwitterionic QDs, while for amine-functionalized particles involvement of cholesterol-enriched membrane domains is conceivable. Cysteamine-QDs were found to be the least cytotoxic, while D-penicillamine-QDs reduced the mitochondrial activity of MDCKII by 20-25%. Although the cell vitality appeared unaffected (assessed from the changes in mitochondrial activity using a classical MTS assay after 24 h of exposure), the binding of QDs to the cellular interior and their movement across cytoskeletal filaments (captured and characterized by single-particle tracking), was shown to compromise the integrity of the cytoskeletal and plasma membrane dynamics, as evidenced by electric cell-substrate impedance sensing.

Synthesis of Au/CdSe Janus Nanoparticles with Efficient Charge Transfer for Improving Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation.

Project description:Metal-semiconductor heterostructures integrate multiply functionalities beyond those of their individual counterparts. Great efforts have been devoted to synthesize heterostructures with controlled morphologies for the applications ranging from photocatalysis to photonic nanodevices. Beyond the morphologies, the interface between two counterparts also significantly influences the performance of the heterostructures. Here, we synthesize Au/CdSe Janus nanostructures consisting of two half spheres of Au and CdSe separated by a flat and high-quality interface. Au/CdSe with other morphologies could also be prepared by adjusting the overgrowth conditions. The photocatalytic hydrogen generation of the Au/CdSe Janus nanospheres is measured to be 3.9 times higher than that of the controlled samples with CdSe half-shells overgrown on the Au nanospheres. The highly efficient charge transfer across the interface between Au and CdSe contributes to the improved photocatalytic performance. Our studies may find the applications in the design of heterostructures with highly efficient photocatalytic activity.
