Two Mercury Antimony Chalcogenides Cs₂HgSb₄S₈ and Cs₂Hg₂Sb₂Se₆ with Cesium Cations as Counterions.

ABSTRACT: Two novel layer structure compounds, Cs₂HgSb₄S₈ and Cs₂Hg₂Sb₂Se₆, were synthesized in organic solvent under solvothermal conditions. The Cs₂HgSb₄S₈ is formed of [HgSb₄S₈]^2- ribbons and S atoms by corner sharing. The Cs₂Hg₂Sb₂Se₆ is made up of [SbHg₂Se₆]^5- ribbon and disorder trigonal-pyramidal SbSe₃ by sharing ?₃-Se. These compounds are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, solid-state optical absorption spectra, and so on.

Project description:Four new quaternary transition metal arsenic chalcogenide Cs-TM-As-Q compounds (TM = Hg, Cd; Q = S, Se) were synthesized using different mixed solvents. A 1,4-diaminobutane(1,4-dab)/water mixed solvent system was used to solvothermally synthesize the selenoarsenates CsTMAsSe3 (TM = Hg (1), Cd (2)). In 1, the eight-membered ring anion chain consists of trigonal-planar [HgSe3] and trigonal-pyramid [AsSe3]. Compound 2 is similar to the eight-membered ring chain anion of compound 1, and [CdAsSe3]- further joins, through μ3-Se and Cd, to form the layer anions [CdAsSe3]-. A 2-diaminopropane (1,2-dap) and water mixed solvent system was used to synthesize two thioarsenates, Cs2TM2As2S6 (TM = Cd (3), Hg (4)). Compounds 3, 4 and 2 are isostructural; the Cd and Hg atoms are four coordinated. Compounds 1-4 utilize Cs+ cations as a structural directing agent. Finally, the structural and optical properties of the novel series of arsenic chalcogenides were characterized.

Band-Like Charge Transport in Cs2AgBiBr6 and Mixed Antimony-Bismuth Cs2AgBi1-x Sb x Br6 Halide Double Perovskites.

Project description:Recently, halide double perovskites (HDPs), such as Cs2AgBiBr6, have been reported as promising nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites. However, it remains unclear whether the charge-transport properties of these materials are as favorable as for lead-based perovskites. In this work, we study the mobilities of charges in Cs2AgBiBr6 and in mixed antimony-bismuth Cs2AgBi1-x Sb x Br6, in which the band gap is tunable from 2.0 to 1.6 eV. Using temperature-dependent time-resolved microwave conductivity techniques, we find that the mobility is proportional to T -p (with p ≈ 1.5). Importantly, this indicates that phonon scattering is the dominant scattering mechanism determining the charge carrier mobility in these HDPs similar to the state-of-the-art lead-based perovskites. Finally, we show that wet chemical processing of Cs2AgBi1-x Sb x Br6 powders is a successful route to prepare thin films of these materials, which paves the way toward photovoltaic devices based on nontoxic HDPs with tunable band gaps.

Does Sb2Se3 Admit Nonstoichiometric Conditions? How Modifying the Overall Se Content Affects the Structural, Optical, and Optoelectronic Properties of Sb2Se3 Thin Films.

Project description:Sb2Se3 is a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) semiconductor, which has shown great promise in photovoltaics. However, its performance is currently limited by a high Voc deficit. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new strategies to minimize the formation of intrinsic defects and thus unlock the absorber's whole potential. It has been reported that tuning the Se/Sb relative content could enable a selective control of the defects. Furthermore, recent experimental evidence has shown that moderate Se excess enhances the photovoltaic performance; however, it is not yet clear whether this excess has been incorporated into the structure. In this work, a series of Sb2Se3 thin films have been prepared imposing different nominal compositions (from Sb-rich to Se-rich) and then have been thoroughly characterized using compositional, structural, and optical analysis techniques. Hence, it is shown that Sb2Se3 does not allow an extended range of nonstoichiometric conditions. Instead, any Sb or Se excesses are compensated in the form of secondary phases. Also, a correlation has been found between operating under Se-rich conditions and an improvement in the crystalline orientation, which is likely related to the formation of a MoSe2 phase in the back interface. Finally, this study shows new utilities of Raman, X-ray diffraction, and photothermal deflection spectroscopy combination techniques to examine the structural properties of Sb2Se3, especially how well-oriented the material is.

Chemically driven superstructural ordering leading to giant unit cells in unconventional clathrates Cs8Zn18Sb28 and Cs8Cd18Sb28.

Project description:The unconventional clathrates, Cs8Zn18Sb28 and Cs8Cd18Sb28, were synthesized and reinvestigated. These clathrates exhibit unique and extensive superstructural ordering of the clathrate-I structure that was not initially reported. Cs8Cd18Sb28 orders in the Ia3̄d space group (no. 230) with 8 times larger volume of the unit cell in which most framework atoms segregate into distinct Cd and Sb sites. The structure of Cs8Zn18Sb28 is much more complicated, with an 18-fold increase of unit cell volume accompanied by significant reduction of symmetry down to P2 (no. 3) monoclinic space group. This structure was revealed by a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. A full solid solution, Cs8Zn18-x Cd x Sb28, was also synthesized and characterized. These compounds follow Vegard's law in regard to their primitive unit cell sizes and melting points. Variable temperature in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction was used to study the formation and melting of Cs8Zn18Sb28. Due to the heavy elements comprising clathrate framework and the complex structural ordering, the synthesized clathrates exhibit ultralow thermal conductivities, all under 0.8 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature. Cs8Zn9Cd9Sb28 and Cs8Zn4.5Cd13.5Sb28 both have total thermal conductivities of 0.49 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature, among the lowest reported for any clathrate. Cs8Zn18Sb28 has typical p-type semiconducting charge transport properties, while the remaining clathrates show unusual n-p transitions or sharp increases of thermopower at low temperatures. Estimations of the bandgaps as activation energy for resistivity dependences show an anomalous widening and then shrinking of the bandgap with increasing Cd-content.

Discovery of new boron-rich chalcogenides: orthorhombic B6X (X=S, Se).

Project description:New boron-rich sulfide B6S and selenide B6Se have been discovered by combination of high pressure - high temperature synthesis and ab initio evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy at ambient conditions. As it follows from Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data, both chalcogenides have orthorhombic symmetry and belong to Pmna space group. All experimentally observed Raman bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated phonon modes, and the mode assignment has been performed. Prediction of mechanical properties (hardness and elastic moduli) of new boron-rich chalcogenides has been made using ab initio calculations, and both compounds were found to be members of a family of hard phases.

Activation of CS2 and CO2 by Silylium Cations.

Project description:The hydride-bridged silylium cation [Et3 Si-H-SiEt3 ]+ , stabilized by the weakly coordinating [Me3 NB12 Cl11 ]- anion, undergoes, in the presence of excess silane, a series of unexpected consecutive reactions with the valence-isoelectronic molecules CS2 and CO2 . The final products of the reaction with CS2 are methane and the previously unknown [(Et3 Si)3 S]+ cation. To gain insight into the entire reaction cascade, numerous experiments with varying conditions were performed, intermediate products were intercepted, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. Besides the [(Et3 Si)3 S]+ cation as the final product, crystal structures of [(Et3 Si)2 SMe]+ , [Et3 SiS(H)Me]+ , and [Et3 SiOC(H)OSiEt3 ]+ were obtained. Experimental results combined with supporting quantum-chemical calculations in the gas phase and solution allow a detailed understanding of the reaction cascade.

Solvent composition regulates the Se : Sb ratio in antimony selenide nanowires deposited from thiol-amine solvent mixtures.

Project description:Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3), a V2VI3 semiconductor with an intriguing crystal structure, has demonstrated improved power conversion and solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies in recent years. Depositing antimony selenide nanowires (NWs) from a solution such as a thiol : amine "alkahest" ink is a low-cost and facile route to deposit high surface area photocathodes. However, little is known about the correlations between the solvent composition and the crystallites' structure and optoelectronic properties, which are crucial for photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical applications. We found that the Se : Sb ratio in the NWs decreases from 3 : 2 to less than 1 : 1 with decreasing thiol : amine ratio in the ink used for deposition but not in the solvent mixture used for dissolving the metals. The reduced Se : Sb ratio in the solid NWS correlates with an optical bandgap wider by ∼0.3 eV in comparison to stoichiometric NWs, a decrease of the NWs diameter from 180 to 30 nanometers, and a ∼0.2 eV larger work function. In addition, we found that the Se : Sb ratio is not uniform along the NWs, which causes a surface potential increase near the tips of the NWs due to a lower Se : Sb ratio near the NWs tips. The increased surface potential near the tips corresponds to a driving force, due to doping or graded bandgap broadening, that facilitates the migration of photoexcited electrons towards the NW tips. Our findings unlock a path for fine-tuning the optoelectronic properties of antimony selenide towards improving the performance of antimony selenide solar cells and photocathodes.

Sb₂Se₃ under pressure.

Project description:Selected members of the A₂B₃ (A = Sb, Bi; B = Se, Te) family are topological insulators. The Sb₂Se₃ compound does not exhibit any topological properties at ambient conditions; a recent high-pressure study, however, indicated that pressure transforms Sb₂Se₃ from a band insulator into a topological insulator above ~2 GPa; in addition, three structural transitions were proposed to occur up to 25 GPa. Partly motivated by these results, we have performed x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy investigations on Sb₂Se₃ under pressure up to 65 GPa. We have identified only one reversible structural transition: the initial Pnma structure transforms into a disordered cubic bcc alloy above 51 GPa. On the other hand, our high-pressure Raman study did not reproduce the previous results; we attribute the discrepancies to the effects of the different pressure transmitting media used in the high-pressure experiments. We discuss the structural behavior of Sb₂Se₃ within the A₂B₃ (A = Sb, Bi; B = Se, Te) series.

Solution-Mediated Inversion of SnSe to Sb2Se3 Thin-Films.

Project description:New facile and controllable approaches to fabricating metal chalcogenide thin films with adjustable properties can significantly expand the scope of these materials in numerous optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. Most traditional and especially wet-chemical synthetic pathways suffer from a sluggish ability to regulate the composition and have difficulty achieving the high-quality structural properties of the sought-after metal chalcogenides, especially at large 2D length scales. In this effort, and for the first time, we illustrated the fast and complete inversion of continuous SnSe thin-films to Sb2Se3 using a scalable top-down ion-exchange approach. Processing in dense solution systems yielded the formation of Sb2Se3 films with favorable structural characteristics, while oxide phases, which are typically present in most Sb2Se3 films regardless of the synthetic protocols used, were eliminated. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on intermediate phases show strong relaxations of the atomic lattice due to the presence of substitutional and vacancy defects, which likely enhances the mobility of cationic species during cation exchange. Our concept can be applied to customize the properties of other metal chalcogenides or manufacture layered structures.
