Phosphonium-Templated Iodoplumbates.

ABSTRACT: A new family of iodoplumbates based on phosphonium cations have been synthesized and characterized via X-ray crystallography. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrates that these materials have a remarkably high thermal stability and show potential for applications as organic-inorganic hybrid semiconductors. We also present the synthesis of three novel phosphonium salts and the crystallographic elucidation of these compounds.

Cyclic phosphonium ionic liquids.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) incorporating cyclic phosphonium cations are a novel category of materials. We report here on the synthesis and characterization of four new cyclic phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ILs with aliphatic and aromatic pendant groups. In addition to the syntheses of these novel materials, we report on a comparison of their properties with their ammonium congeners. These exemplars are slightly less conductive and have slightly smaller self-diffusion coefficients than their cyclic ammonium congeners.

Ferrocene-Containing Sterically Hindered Phosphonium Salts.

Project description:The synthesis and physical properties of the series of the ferrocenyl-containing sterically hindered phosphonium salts based on di(tert-butyl)ferrocenylphosphine is reported. Analysis of voltamogramms of the obtained compounds revealed some correlations between their structures and electrochemical properties. The elongation of the alkyl chain at the P atom as well as replacement of the Br- anion by [BF₄]- shifts the ferrocene/ferrocenium transition of the resulting salts into the positive region. DFT results shows that in the former case, the Br- anion destabilizes the corresponding ion pair, making its oxidation easier due to increased highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy. Increased HOMO energy for ion pairs with the Br- ion compared to BF₄- are caused by contribution of bromide atomic orbitals to the HOMO. The observed correlations can be used for fine-tuning the properties of the salts making them attractive for applications in multicomponent batteries and capacitors.

Basic Phosphonium Ionic Liquids as Wittig Reagents.

Project description:The possibility of designing a solvent/reagent for Wittig reactions from basic phosphonium salts is explored theoretically. In the suggested R4P+PhO- and Ph3PR+PhO- ionic liquids (ILs), the phenolate anion is prone to remove the α-proton from the alkyl chains, forming a phosphorous ylide. Significant hydrogen bonding between the oxygen atoms of the anions and α-hydrogen atoms of the cations were found by molecular dynamics simulations of these substances; therefore, proton transfer between the two ions is inherently supported by the structure of the liquid as well. The subsequent steps of the Wittig reaction from the phosphorous ylide were also found to be energetically possible. The mesoscopic structure of these materials exhibits a significant segregation into polar and nonpolar domains, which may also allow an easy dissolution of the substrates. The formation of a pentacoordinated phosphorous derivative through P-O bond formation was found to be also possible in the gas phase for both kind of compounds. Accordingly, having such basic anions in phosphonium-based ILs may produce such a neutral and therefore volatile species, which may hold further significant applications for these solvents in ion-exchange and separation techniques and in synthesis.

Synthetic utility of an isolable nucleoside phosphonium salt.

Project description:The reaction of O6-benzyl-3',5'-bis- O-( tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-2'-deoxyxanthosine with 1H-benzotriazol-1-yloxy-tris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (BOP) yielded the nucleoside C-2 tris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate salt as a stable, isolable species. This is in contrast to reactions of inosine nucleosides with BOP, where the in situ formed phosphonium salts undergo subsequent reaction to yield O6-(benzotriazol-1-yl)inosine derivatives. The phosphonium salt obtained from the 2'-deoxyxanthosine derivative can be effectively used to synthesize N2-modified 2'-deoxyguanosine analogues. Using this salt, a new synthesis of an acrolein-2'-deoxyguanosine adduct has also been accomplished.

Novel Organic-Inorganic Perovskite Compounds Having Phosphonium Groups.

Project description:Organic-inorganic perovskites are composed of organic cations and [PbX6]4- octahedra, and the properties change depending on the type of organic cations. To identify the effect of organic cations and control the properties of the perovskite, thin films were prepared using quaternary alkylammonium and quaternary alkylphosphonium cations, which have big steric effects. A big steric effect can generate the distortion of [PbX6]4- octahedra leading to changes in properties. A thin film of a Pb-based organic-inorganic perovskite having quaternary alkylphosphonium cations was prepared for the first time. An exciton absorption was observed at a lower wavelength than other perovskites prepared from primary and quaternary ammonium salts. The perovskite with phosphonium groups was thermally stable compared with ammonium groups.

Ion-Pair-Directed Borylation of Aromatic Phosphonium Salts.

Project description:Control of positional selectivity in C-H activation reactions remains a challenge for synthetic chemists. Noncovalent catalysis has the potential to be a powerful strategy to address this challenge. As a part of our ongoing investigations into the use of ion-pairing interactions in site-selective catalysis, we demonstrate that several classes of aromatic phosphonium salts undergo iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation with a high selectivity for the arene meta position. This is achieved using a bifunctional bipyridine ligand bearing a pendant sulfonate group, which had previously been successful for borylation of aromatic ammonium salts. In this case, the phosphonium salts give a higher meta selectivity than the corresponding ammonium salts. We propose that the high selectivity occurs due to an attractive electrostatic interaction between the substrate and the ligand in the transition state for borylation.

Preparation and wittig reactions of organotrifluoroborato phosphonium ylides.

Project description:[reaction: see text] Potassium [(trifluoroboratophenyl)methyl]triphenylphosphonium chlorides have been prepared from the corresponding benzyl chlorides and PPh3. In the presence of 1.2 equiv of K2CO3 and various aldehydes, these mixed salts are easily converted to the corresponding unsaturated organotrifluoroborates via the intermediate phosphorus ylides. A protocol for a one-pot transformation has also been developed.

RNA-templated DNA repair.

Project description:RNA can act as a template for DNA synthesis in the reverse transcription of retroviruses and retrotransposons and in the elongation of telomeres. Despite its abundance in the nucleus, there has been no evidence for a direct role of RNA as a template in the repair of any chromosomal DNA lesions, including DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), which are repaired in most organisms by homologous recombination or by non-homologous end joining. An indirect role for RNA in DNA repair, following reverse transcription and formation of a complementary DNA, has been observed in the non-homologous joining of DSB ends. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in which homologous recombination is efficient, RNA was shown to mediate recombination, but only indirectly through a cDNA intermediate generated by the reverse transcriptase function of Ty retrotransposons in Ty particles in the cytoplasm. Although pairing between duplex DNA and single-strand (ss)RNA can occur in vitro and in vivo, direct homologous exchange of genetic information between RNA and DNA molecules has not been observed. We show here that RNA can serve as a template for DNA synthesis during repair of a chromosomal DSB in yeast. The repair was accomplished with RNA oligonucleotides complementary to the broken ends. This and the observation that even yeast replicative DNA polymerases such as alpha and delta can copy short RNA template tracts in vitro demonstrate that RNA can transfer genetic information in vivo through direct homologous interaction with chromosomal DNA.

Cyclodextrin-templated porphyrin nanorings.

Project description:?- and ?-cyclodextrins have been used as scaffolds for the synthesis of six- and seven-legged templates by functionalizing every primary CH2OH with a 4-pyridyl moiety. Although these templates are flexible, they are very effective for directing the synthesis of macrocyclic porphyrin oligomers consisting of six or seven porphyrin units. The transfer of chirality from the cyclodextrin templates to their nanoring hosts is evident from NMR and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Surprisingly, the mean effective molarity for binding the flexible ?-cyclodextrin-based template within the six-porphyrin nanoring (74?M) is almost as high as for the previously studied rigid hexadentate template (180?M). The discovery that flexible templates are effective in this system, and the availability of a template with a prime number of binding sites, open up many possibilities for the template-directed synthesis of larger macrocycles.

Kinase-templated abiotic reaction.

Project description:Protein kinases are quintessential regulators of cellular function. Numerous pathologies are intimately linked to the dysregulated activity of a particular protein kinase. Herein we report a technology based on a proximity-induced chemical transformation that enables the detection and imaging of specific kinases. Using two probes that target the nucleotide-binding site and substrate binding site of a target kinase respectively, the reagents appended on the probes are brought within reactive distance thereby enabling the chemical transformation. The reaction used for sensing is a ruthenium-photocatalyzed reduction of a pyridinium immolative linker, which uncages a fluorophore (rhodamine). We demonstrate that this technology can be used to discriminate between closely related kinases with a high signal to noise ratio. We further demonstrate that the technology operates within the complexity of a cellular context with a good correlation between the level of kinase activity and fluorescence output.
