Project description:The present work describes the improved photocatalytic activity of cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted Bi2WO6 (CBTH) toward the synthesis of bioactive benzazoles. X-ray diffraction analysis of CBTH suggests that crystal growth has occurred along the (200) plane, whereas field-emission scanning electron microscopy images confirm two-dimensional rose bud morphology and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis suggests the formation of thin nanosheets possessing an orthorhombic structure. Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia and Py-IR measurements indicate substantial acidity with the generation of Brønsted acid sites on the surface of CBTH. Raman spectra of CBTH also corroborate these observations with the formation of defects within [Bi2O2]2+ layers, resulting in decreased thickness and shapes of nanoplates. These beneficial properties are explored toward the photochemical synthesis of benzazoles using a 35 W tungsten lamp and a CBTH photocatalyst, resulting in better yields at lesser exposure time. It is observed that the catalytic activity is retained up to five consecutive cycles with marginal decrease in % yield. Such a feature can be ascribed to the photostability of the photocatalyst even after continuous exposure to light, implying that the surface active sites remained unaltered as evident from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of pre- and post-characterization of CBTH. Moreover, decrease in the surface hydroxyl groups after five catalytic cycles also accounts for the generation of enhanced Brønsted sites owing to the presence of Bi-O on the surface of CBTH. It exhibits better catalytic activity as compared to other photocatalysts employed for the synthesis of benzazoles. Thus, CBTH serves as a robust photocatalyst for the facile synthesis of these heterocycles in a sustainable manner.

Project description:Malignant tumors are one of the main causes of human death. The clinical treatment of malignant tumors is usually surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and so forth. Radiotherapy, as a traditional and effective treatment method for cancer, is widely used in clinical practice, but the radiation resistance of tumor cells and the toxic side effects to normal cells are still the Achilles heel of radiotherapy. Multifunctional inorganic high-atom nanomaterials are expected to enhance the effect of tumor radiotherapy. Tungsten and bismuth, which contain elements with high atomic coefficients, have strong X-ray energy attenuation capability. We synthesized Bi2WO6 nanosheets (NSs) using a hydrothermal synthesis method and modified polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on their surface to make them more stable. PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs have a variety of effects after absorbing X-rays (such as the photoelectric effect and Compton effect) and release a variety of particles such as photoelectrons, Compton electrons, auger electrons, and so forth, which can react with organic molecules or water in cells, generate a large number of free radicals, and promote cell apoptosis, thereby improving the effect of radiotherapy. We show through γ-H2AX and DCFH-DA probe analysis experiments that PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can effectively increase cell DNA damage and reactive oxygen species formation under X-ray irradiation. Clone formation analysis showed that PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can effectively suppress cell colony formation under X-ray irradiation. These versatile functions endow PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs with enhanced radiotherapy efficacy in animal models. In addition, PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can also be used as contrast agents for X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging with obvious effects. Therefore, PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can be used as CT imaging contrast agents and tumor radiotherapy sensitizers and have potential medical applications.

Project description:The visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants in aquatic environments is a promising strategy for addressing water pollution problems. This work highlights the use of bromine-ion-doped layered Aurivillius oxide, Bi2WO6, to synergistically optimize the morphology and increase the formation of active sites on the photocatalyst's surface. The layered Bi2WO6 nanoplates were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal reaction in which bromine (Br-) ions were introduced by adding cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB)/potassium bromide (KBr). The as-synthesized Bi2WO6 nanoplates displayed higher photocatalytic tetracycline degradation activity (~83.5%) than the Bi2WO6 microspheres (~48.2%), which were obtained without the addition of Br precursors in the reaction medium. The presence of Br- was verified experimentally, and the newly formed Bi2WO6 developed as nanoplates where the adsorbed Br- ions restricted the multilayer stacking. Considering the significant morphology change, increased specific surface area, and enhanced photocatalytic performance, using a synthesis approach mediated by Br- ions to design layered photocatalysts is expected to be a promising system for advancing water remediation.

Project description:As an n-type semiconductor material, tungsten oxide (WO3) has good application prospects in the field of gas sensing. Herein, using oxalic acid (OA), citric acid (CA) and tartaric acid (TA) as auxiliary agents, three homogeneous tungsten oxide nanosheets were prepared by the rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The potential exhaled gases of various diseases were screened for the gas sensitivity test. Compared with WO3-OA and WO3-TA, WO3-CA exhibits significant sensitivity to formaldehyde, acetone and various alkanes. Photoluminescence (PL) chromatography and photoelectric properties show that its excellent gas sensitivity is due to its abundant oxygen vacancies and high surface charge migration rate, which can provide more preferential reaction sites with gas molecules. The experiment is of great significance for the sensor selection of the large disease exhaled gas sensor array.

Project description:The three-dimensional flower-like Bi2WO6 was synthesized through a one-step microwave method (the reaction temperature was 434 K and the reaction took 10 min) with the assistance of ethanolamine (EA). The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, PL, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. Methyl orange was used as target pollutant to evaluate the photocatalysis property of samples. Furthermore, the influence of the mechanism of EA on the structure and catalytic performance of Bi2WO6 was discussed. The detailed characterizations revealed that the three-dimensional flower-like Bi2WO6 was successfully synthesized with the assistance of EA. The results confirmed that EA significantly influenced the morphology of Bi2WO6 products. The addition of EA can effectively alter the pressure of the reaction and improve the crystal phase and structure of Bi2WO6 photocatalysts, enhancing the photocatalytic activity of samples and improving the photocatalytic efficiency. EA can serve as an assembling agent and structure-directing agent resulting in the formation of flower-like architectures. With the increase of the amount of EA, the as-prepared Bi2WO6 sample gradually forms a flower-like structure, leading to a shorter time of light holes migrating to the surface of the catalyst. It makes the compound rate significantly decreased, and improves the photocatalytic efficiency of the sample.

Project description:WO3 nanosheets was prepared by an acidification method and the Rh catalyst was dispersed on the surface of the nanosheets with a wet impregnation method. The morphology of pristine WO3 and Rh modified WO3 nanosheets and their responses to acetone gas were studied. According to oxygen adsorption combined with TPR results, the sensing and sensitization mechanism of acetone were discussed. It was found that no visible changes in nanostructures or morphologies were observed in WO3 nanosheets with Rh, however, the sensor resistance and sensor response were greatly promoted. The basic sensitization mechanism could be caused by the electronic interaction between oxidized Rh and WO3 surface.

Project description:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has attracted enormous interest as a sustainable and renewable source of energy. In the past decade, numerous bulk-type semiconductors have been developed, but the existing designs suffer many limitations, namely rapid recombination of charge carriers and weak light absorption ability. Herein, a bottom-up approach was developed to design atomically thin sulfur-doped Bi2 WO6 perovskite nanosheets (S-BWO) with improved reduction ability, extended visible light absorption, prolonged lifetime of charge carriers, enhanced adsorption of CO2 , and reduced work function. Compared with pristine Bi2 WO6 (P-BWO), S-BWO nanosheets exhibited a 3-fold improvement in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under simulated sunlight irradiation. Experimental studies and density functional theory calculations revealed the synergistic roles of atomically thin nanosheets and S atoms in promoting photocatalytic efficiency.

Project description:Pristine and Au-decorated Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Characterization techniques such as XRD, FESEM, HRTEM and XPS were used to explore the structural, morphological and electronic properties. Furthermore, electrochemical characterizations including cyclic voltammetry (CV), the galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) method, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed to investigate the supercapacitance behaviour of the synthesized materials. Interestingly, the Au-decorated Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 nanocomposite showed a higher capacitance of 495.05 F g-1 (1 M aqueous KOH electrolyte) with improved cycling stability (99.26%) over 2000 cycles, measured at a current density of 1 A g-1, when compared to the pristine Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 composite (capacitance of 148.81 F g-1 and good cycling stability (95.99%) over 2000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1). The results clearly reveal that the decoration of the Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 composite with Au nanoparticles enhances its supercapacitance behaviour, which can be attributed to an increase in electrical conductivity, good electrical contact between the electrode and electrolyte, and an increase in effective area. The Au-decorated Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 nanocomposite can be considered as an electrode material for supercapacitor application.

Project description:WO3 is a versatile material occurring in many polymorphs, and is used in nanostructured form in many applications, including photocatalysis, gas sensing, and energy storage. We investigated the thermal evolution of cubic-phase nanocrystals with a size range of 5-25 nm by means of in situ heating in the transmission electron microscope (TEM), and found distinct pathways for the formation of either 2D WO3 nanosheets or elemental W nanoparticles, depending on the initial concentration of deposited WO3 nanoparticles. These pristine particles were stable up to 600 °C, after which coalescence and fusion of the nanocrystals were observed. Typically, the nanocrystals transformed into faceted nanocrystals of elemental body-centered-cubic W after annealing to 900 °C. However, in areas where the concentration of dropcast WO3 nanoparticles was high, at a temperature of 900 °C, considerably larger lath-shaped nanosheets (extending for hundreds of nanometers in length and up to 100 nm in width) were formed that are concluded to be in monoclinic WO3 or WO2.7 phases. These lath-shaped 2D particles, which often curled up from their sides into folded 2D nanosheets, are most likely formed from the smaller nanoparticles through a solid-vapor-solid growth mechanism. The findings of the in situ experiments were confirmed by ex situ experiments performed in a high-vacuum chamber.

Project description:Reaction induced Pd x Bi y /SiC catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity (92% conversion of benzyl alcohol and 98% selectivity of benzyl aldehyde) and stability (time on stream of 200 h) in the gas phase oxidation of alcohols at a low temperature of 240 °C due to the formation of Pd0-Bi2O3 species. TEM indicates that the agglomeration of the 5.8 nm nanoparticles is inhibited under the reaction conditions. The transformation from inactive PdO-Bi2O3 to active Pd0-Bi2O3 under the reaction conditions is confirmed elaborately by XRD and XPS.
