Mopping up the Oil, Metal, and Fluoride Ions from Water.

ABSTRACT: The recycle, cleaning, and reuse of water are highly important for environmental remediation. This issue is addressed by creating a fluorescent zwitterionic spirocyclic Meisenheimer complex with high chelating propensity for toxic metals using low-cost starting materials and a one-pot synthesis technique. The resulting material is able to detect fluoride up to 12.8 ppb level and remove 82% aqueous fluoride from 1000 mL of 100 ppm fluoride solution in a single contact. The material demonstrates rapid kinetics and is capable of dropping the toxic metal ion (Pb/Hg/Cd) concentration below 0.2 ppb within 10 min. A resin-free, precipitation-free, and reusable technique has been developed for the removal of toxic metal ions and fluoride from extremely polluted water. Moreover, utilizing its extreme hydrophobicity, polystyrene sponges have been coated with the Meisenheimer complex to mop up oil spill and organic solvents from a biphasic mixture.

Microbe- plant interaction as a sustainable tool for mopping up heavy metal contaminated sites.

Project description:BackgroundPhytoremediation is a green technology that removes heavy metal (HM) contamination from the environment by using HM plant accumulators. Among soil microbiota, plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPR) have a role influencing the metal availability and uptake.MethodsThis current study evaluates the plant growth promoting qualities of microbial flora isolated from rhizosphere, plant roots, and marine aquatic HMs polluted environments in Alexandria through several biochemical and molecular traits. Metal contents in both collected soils and plant tissues were measured. Transcript levels of marker genes (HMA3 and HMA4) were analyzed.ResultsThree terrestrial and one aquatic site were included in this study based on the ICP-MS identification of four HMs (Zn, Cd, Cu, and Ni) or earlier reports of HMs contamination. Using the VITEK2 bacterial identification system, twenty-two bacteria isolated from these loci were biochemically described. Pseudomonas and Bacillus were the most dominant species. Furthermore, the soil microbiota collected from the most contaminated HMs site with these two were able to enhance the Helianthus annuus L. hyper-accumulation capacity significantly. Specifically, sunflower plants cultivated in soils with HMs adapted bacteria were able to accumulate about 1.7-2.5-folds more Zn and Cd in their shoots, respectively.ConclusionThe influence of PGPR to stimulate crop growth under stress is considered an effective strategy. Overall, our findings showed that plants cultivated in HMs contaminated sites in the presence of PGPR were able to accumulate significant amounts of HMs in several plant parts than those cultivated in soils lacking microbiota.

Theoretical and Experimental Design of Heavy Metal-Mopping Magnetic Nanoparticles.

Project description:Herein, we show a comprehensive experimental, theoretical, and computational study aimed at designing macromolecules able to adsorb a cargo at the nanoscale. Specifically, we focus on the adsorption properties of star diblock copolymers, i.e., macromolecules made by a number f of H-T diblock copolymer arms tethered on a central core; the H monomeric heads, which are closer to the tethering point, are attractive toward a specific target, while the T monomeric tails are neutral to the cargo. Experimentally, we exploited the adaptability of poly(2-oxazoline)s (POxs) to realize block copolymer-coated nanoparticles with a proper functionalization able to interact with heavy metals and show or exhibit a thermoresponsive behavior in aqueous solution. We here present the synthesis and analysis of the properties of a high molecular mass block copolymer featured by (i) a polar side chain, capable of exploiting electrostatic and hydrophilic interaction with a predetermined cargo, and (ii) a thermoresponsive scaffold, able to change the interaction with the media by tuning the temperature. Afterward, the obtained polymers were grafted onto iron oxide nanoparticles and the thermoresponsive properties were investigated. Through isothermal titration calorimetry, we then analyzed the adsorption properties of the synthesized superparamagnetic nanoparticles for heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. Additionally, we use a combination of scaling theories and simulations to link equilibrium properties of the system to a prediction of the loading properties as a function of size ratio and effective interactions between the considered species. The comparison between experimental results on adsorption and theoretical prediction validates the whole design process.

Effect of Transition Metal Ions on the B Ring Oxidation of Sterols and their Kinetics in Oil-in-Water Emulsions.

Project description:This study investigated the effect of metal ions on the oxidation of sterols and their kinetics in oil-in-water emulsions. Sterol substrates were added with different metal ions (Cu(2+), Fe(2+), Mn(2+), Zn(2+), Na(+), and Mg(2+)) of five concentrations and investigated after 2?h of heating at 90?°C. The substrates added with Fe(2+) and Cu(2+) were heated continuously to evaluate the kinetics of four sterols and their corresponding sterol oxidation products (SOPs). Sterol oxidation increased as the metal ion concentration increased and the heating time was prolonged. The capability of the metal ions oxidizing sterols ranked as followed: Fe(2+)?>?Cu(2+)?>?Mn(2+)?>?Zn(2+)?>?Mg(2+)???Na(+). 7-Ketosterol, 7?/7?-Hydroxysterol, 5?,6?/5?,6?-Epoxysterol, and Triols were the main oxides on the B ring, whereas 6?-Hydroxysterol was not or only slightly influenced. The acceleration of sterol degradation induced by Fe(2+) and Cu(2+), as well as the formation of oxidation products, followed first-order formation/elimination kinetics. The acceleration effect may be partly ascribed to the increase in elimination rate constant and formation rate constant. Transition metal ions can significantly induce sterol oxidation, which reduces food nutritional quality and triggers the formation of undesirable compounds, such as SOPs.

Spatial localization of charged molecules by salt ions in oil-confined water microdroplets.

Project description:Cells contain more than 100 mM salt ions that are typically confined to dimensions of 5 to 10 micrometers by a hydrophobic cellular membrane. We found that in aqueous microdroplets having the same size as cells and that are confined in hydrocarbon oil, negatively charged molecules were distributed rather uniformly over the interior of the microdroplet, whereas positively charged molecules were localized at and near the surface. However, the addition of salt (NaCl) to the microdroplet caused all charged molecules to be localized near the oil-water interface. This salt-induced relocalization required less salt concentration in microdroplets compared to bulk water. Moreover, the localization became more prominent as the size of the microdroplet was reduced. The relocatization also critically depended on the type of oil. Our results imply that salt ions and different hydrophobic interfaces together may govern the local distribution of charged biomolecules in confined intracellular environments.

Silver Nanoclusters Encapsulated into Metal-Organic Frameworks for Rapid Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Water.

Project description:Metal nanomaterials have been reported as effective absorbents for the removal of pollutants in the water system, but the release of ions from these nanomaterials brings another concern. Herein, silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) were encapsulated in porous metal-organic frameworks of ZIF-8 (MOF-AgNCs). Compared to AgNCs, the release of Ag+ significantly decreases from MOF-AgNCs, indicating that the product presents a lower threat to the environment. The MOF-AgNCs were employed for the rapid removal of heavy metals, such as Pb2+ and Mn2+, from water. The mechanism and removal efficiencies were investigated.

A pH-Based Single-Sensor Array for Discriminating Metal Ions in Water.

Project description:Human activities, such as mining and manufacturing, expose society and the natural environment to harmful levels of metal ions. Recently, optical sensor arrays for metal ion detection have become popular owing to their favourable features, such as facile sample preparation and the requirement of less expensive instrumentation compared to traditional, spectrometry-based analysis techniques. Sensor arrays usually consist of numerous optical probes that are used in combination to generate unique analyte responses. In contrast, here we present an array that comprises a single fluorescent sensor, Coum4-DPA, that produces unique responses to metal ions in different pH environments. With this simple sensing platform, we were able to classify 10 metal ions in different water sources and quantify Pb2+ in tap water using just one fluorescent sensor, a few pH buffers and two sets of spectral data. This novel approach significantly decreases time and costs associated with probe synthesis and data collection, making it highly transferrable to real-world metal sensing applications.

Application of a triblock copolymer additive modified polyvinylidene fluoride membrane for effective oil/water separation.

Project description:A hollow fibre membrane was fabricated by blending polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with a triblock copolymer additive polymer that has both hydrophilic and oleophobic surface properties. The novel membrane was characterized and examined for oil/water separation under various system conditions, including different cross-flow rate, feed temperature, trans-membrane pressure, and its rejection and cleaning efficiency, etc. By applying the membrane into the filtration of synthesized oil/water emulsion, the membrane constantly achieved an oil rejection rate of above 99%, with a relatively constant permeate flux varied in the range of 68.9-59.0 l m-2 h-1. More importantly, the fouling of the used membrane can be easily removed by simple water flushing. The membrane also demonstrated a wide adaptability for different types of real oily wastewater, even at very high feed oil concentration (approx. 115 000 mg l-1 in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COM)). Hence, the novel triblock copolymer additive-modified PVDF membrane can have a great prospect in the continuing effort to expand the engineering application of polymeric membranes for oily wastewater treatment.

Fluoride ion encapsulation by Mg2+ ions and phosphates in a fluoride riboswitch.

Project description:Significant advances in our understanding of RNA architecture, folding and recognition have emerged from structure-function studies on riboswitches, non-coding RNAs whose sensing domains bind small ligands and whose adjacent expression platforms contain RNA elements involved in the control of gene regulation. We now report on the ligand-bound structure of the Thermotoga petrophila fluoride riboswitch, which adopts a higher-order RNA architecture stabilized by pseudoknot and long-range reversed Watson-Crick and Hoogsteen A•U pair formation. The bound fluoride ion is encapsulated within the junctional architecture, anchored in place through direct coordination to three Mg(2+) ions, which in turn are octahedrally coordinated to water molecules and five inwardly pointing backbone phosphates. Our structure of the fluoride riboswitch in the bound state shows how RNA can form a binding pocket selective for fluoride, while discriminating against larger halide ions. The T. petrophila fluoride riboswitch probably functions in gene regulation through a transcription termination mechanism.

Amplified Chemiluminescence Signal for Sensing Fluoride Ions.

Project description:Bringing together the concepts of self-immolative linkers and chemiluminogen dioxetane modules, a chemiluminescence-based sensor for fluoride with signal amplification is presented. Signal amplification is obtained by triggering two chemiluminescence events for each reacting fluoride ion that in turn releases two fluoride ions for each ion. As expected, the chemiluminescence signal starts to rise following an induction period. In addition to the analytical potential, this chemical system is also of interest as a demonstration of positive feedback loop character.
