Synthesis, Characterization, and Proton Conduction Behavior of Thorium and Cerium Phosphonates.

ABSTRACT: Thorium (Th4+) and cerium (Ce4+) phosphonates have been synthesized by the sol-gel method using various phosphonic acids and analyzed using elemental and CHN analysis, spectral analysis (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction), thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The proton transport study was performed by measuring proton conductance at different temperatures using an impedance analyzer. The Grotthuss mechanism of the proton conduction has been discussed thoroughly on the basis of results obtained from the impedance measurement; the specific proton conduction (?) and activation energy (E a) have been evaluated and compared with the reported proton-conducting system having similar phosphonate moieties.

Alkyl-Substituted Aminobis(phosphonates)-Efficient Precipitating Agents for Rare Earth Elements, Thorium, and Uranium in Aqueous Solutions.

Project description:The efficient and environmentally sustainable separation process for rare earth elements (REE), especially for adjacent lanthanoids, remains a challenge due to the chemical similarity of REEs. Tetravalent actinoids, thorium, and traces of uranium are also present in concentrates of REEs, making their separation relevant. This study reports six simple water-soluble aminobis(phosphonate) ligands, RN[CH2P(O)(OH)2]2 (1 R = CH2CH3, 2 R = (CH2)2CH3, 3 R = (CH2)3CH3, 4 R = (CH2)4CH3, 5 R = (CH2)5CH3, 6 R = CH2CH(C2H5)(CH2)3CH3) as precipitating agents for REEs, Th, and U, as well as gives insight into the coordination modes of the utilized ligands with REEs at the molecular level. Aminobis(phosphonates) 4-6 with longer carbon chains were found to separate selectively thorium, uranium, and scandium from REEs with short precipitation time (15 min) and excellent separation factors that generally range from 100 to 2000 in acidic aqueous solution. Ligands 1-6 also improved separation factors for adjacent lanthanoids in comparison to traditional oxalate precipitation agents. Importantly, precipitated metals can be recovered from the ligands with 3 molar HNO3 with no observed ligand decomposition enabling the possibility of recycling the ligands in the separation process. NMR-monitored pH titrations for 1 showed deprotonation steps at pK a 1.3, 5.55, and >10.5, which indicate that the ligands remain in a deprotonated [L]-1 form in the pH range of 0-4 used in the precipitation studies. 31P NMR titration studies between 1 and M(NO3)3 (M = Y, La, Lu) gave satisfactory fits for 1:3, 1:2, and 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometries for Y, La, and Lu, respectively, according to an F-test. Therefore, aminobis(phosphonate) precipitation agents 1-6 are likely to form metal complexes with fewer ligands than traditional separation agents like DEHPA, which coordinates to REEs in 1:6 metal-ligand ratio.

Two-dimensional dysprosium(III) coordination polymer: Structure, single-molecule magnetic behavior, proton conduction, and luminescence.

Project description:A new dysprosium (III) coordination polymer [Dy(Hm-dobdc) (H2O)2]·H2O (Dy-CP), was hydrothermal synthesized based on 4,6-dioxido-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate (H4m-dobdc) ligand containing carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups. The Dy(III) center adopts an octa-coordinated [DyO8] geometry, which can be described as a twisted square antiprism (D 4d symmetry). Neighboring Dy(III) ions are interconnected by deprotonated Hm-dobdc3- ligand to form the two-dimensional infinite layers, which are further linked to generate three-dimensional structure through abundant hydrogen bonds mediated primarily by coordinated and lattice H2O molecules. Magnetic studies demonstrates that Dy-CP shows the field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization and the energy barrier U eff/k B and relaxation time τ 0 are 35.3 K and 1.31 × 10-6 s, respectively. Following the vehicular mechanism, Dy-CP displays proton conductivity with σ equal to 7.77 × 10-8 S cm-1 at 353 K and 30%RH. Moreover, luminescence spectra reveal that H4m-dobdc can sensitize characteristic luminescence of Dy(III) ion. Herein, good magnetism, proton conduction, and luminescence are simultaneously achieved, and thus, Dy-CP is a potential multifunctional coordination polymer material.

Hydrothermal synthesis and structural characterization of ammonium ion-templated lanthanide(III) carboxylate-phosphonates.

Project description:Using N-(phosphonomethyl) iminodiacetic acid (H4PMIDA), as a complexing agent, two new complexes, (NH4)La(PMIDA)(H2O)•H2O, 1 and (NH4)Yb(PMIDA), 2 have been synthesized hydrothermally. In both compounds, the metal ions are trapped by a three five-membered chelate rings by the chelating PMIDA anions giving a tricapped trigonal prismatic LaO8N and monocapped trigonal prismatic YbO6N geometries for 1 and 2, respectively. The structure of 1 consists of La(PMIDA)(H2O) chelating units, linked together by the phosphonate oxygen atoms O1 and O3 to form a chain along the c-axis. The chains are then connected together by the bridging phosphonate oxygen O2 to form a 2D layered structure with alternating 4- and 8-membered apertures. The structure of 2 consists Yb(PMIDA) chelating units, which are connected by alternating bridging carboxylate and phosphonate groups along the [010] direction forming chains with a corrugated pattern. The third phosphonate oxygen bridges the chains together along the [001] direction to build the two-dimensional layer with 4- and 6-membered apertures in the bc-plane. Under excitation of 330 nm, compound 2 shows a broad emission band at λmax = 460 nm. This emission is essentially in the blue luminescent region, which corresponds to ligand centered fluorescence.

Structural mechanism of proton conduction in otopetrin proton channel.

Project description:The otopetrin (OTOP) proteins were recently characterized as extracellular proton-activated proton channels. Several recent OTOP channel structures demonstrated that the channels form a dimer with each subunit adopting a double-barrel architecture. However, the structural mechanisms underlying some basic functional properties of the OTOP channels remain unresolved, including extracellular pH activation, proton conducting pathway, and rapid desensitization. In this study, we performed structural and functional characterization of the Caenorhabditis elegans OTOP8 (CeOTOP8) and mouse OTOP2 (mOTOP2) and illuminated a set of conformational changes related to the proton-conducting process in OTOP. The structures of CeOTOP8 reveal the conformational change at the N-terminal part of TM12 that renders the channel in a transiently proton-transferring state, elucidating an inter-barrel, Glu/His-bridged proton passage within each subunit. The structures of mOTOP2 reveal the conformational change at the N-terminal part of TM6 that exposes the central glutamate to the extracellular solution for protonation. In addition, the structural comparison between CeOTOP8 and mOTOP2, along with the structure-based mutagenesis, demonstrates that an inter-subunit movement at the OTOP channel dimer interface plays a central role in regulating channel activity. Combining the structural information from both channels, we propose a working model describing the multi-step conformational changes during the proton conducting process.

Characterization and Modeling of Free Volume and Ionic Conduction in Multiblock Copolymer Proton Exchange Membranes

Project description:Free volume plays a key role on transport in proton exchange membranes (PEMs), including ionic conduction, species permeation, and diffusion. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to characterize the pore size distribution and ionic conductivity of synthesized PEMs from polysulfone/polyphenylsulfone multiblock copolymers with different degrees of sulfonation (SPES). The experimental data are combined with a bundle-of-tubes model at the cluster-network scale to examine water uptake and proton conduction. The results show that the free pore size changes little with temperature in agreement with the good thermo-mechanical properties of SPES. However, the free volume is significantly lower than that of Nafion®, leading to lower ionic conductivity. This is explained by the reduction of the bulk space available for proton transfer where the activation free energy is lower, as well as an increase in the tortuosity of the ionic network.

Betulin Phosphonates; Synthesis, Structure, and Cytotoxic Activity.

Project description:Betulin derivatives are a widely studied group of compounds of natural origin due to their wide spectrum of biological activities. This paper describes new betulin derivatives, containing a phosphonate group. The allyl-vinyl isomerization and synthesis of acetylenic derivatives have been reported. Structural identification of products as E and Z isomers has been carried out using ¹H-, (13)C-, (31)P-NMR, and crystallographic analysis. The crystal structure in the orthorhombic space group and analysis of crystal packing contacts for 29-diethoxyphosphoryl-28-cyclopropylpropynoyloxy-lup-20E(29)-en-3?-ol 8a are reported. All new compounds were tested in vitro for their antiproliferative activity against human T47D (breast cancer), SNB-19 (glioblastoma), and C32 (melanoma) cell lines.

Synthesis of Bis{meso-Tetrakis(4-N-alkylpyridiniumyl)porphyrinato}cerium and Its Redox Switching Behavior.

Project description:A novel double-decker porphyrin complex, bis{meso-tetrakis(4-N-alkylpyridiniumyl)porphyrinato}cerium, was prepared. Electrochemical measurements revealed that this complex exhibited reversible redox waves corresponding to a 1e- redox reaction of the cerium center. Treating the complex alternately with an oxidant and a reductant resulted in the reversible redox switching between the oxidized and reduced states in an organic solvent.

Aqueous proton-selective conduction across two-dimensional graphyne.

Project description:The development of direct methanol fuel cells is hindered by the issue of methanol crossover across membranes, despite the remarkable features resulting from the use of liquid fuel. Here we investigate the proton-selective conduction behavior across 2D graphyne in an aqueous environment. The aqueous proton conduction mechanism transitions from bare proton penetration to a mixed vehicular and Grotthuss transportation when the side length of triangular graphyne pores increases to 0.95 nm. A further increase in the side length to 1.2 nm results in the formation of a patterned aqueous/vacuum interphase, enabling protons to be conducted through the water wires via Grotthuss mechanism with low energy barriers. More importantly, it is found that 2D graphyne with the side length of less than 1.45 nm can effectively block methanol crossover, suggesting that 2D graphyne with an appropriate pore size is an ideal material to achieve zero-crossover proton-selective membranes.

High Surface Proton Conduction in Nanostructured ZIF-8.

Project description:The zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) combines a significantly high microporosity with an excellent thermal, chemical, and hydrothermal stability. Here, we demonstrated that ZIF-8 can display significant levels of protonic conductivity through a water-mediated surface transport mechanism associated to the presence of di-coordinated Zn ions revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A set of powders with particle sizes from 2.8 µm down to 80 nm studied by dynamic water vapour sorption analysis was used to demonstrate that water adsorbs predominantly in the micropore cavities of microcrystalline ZIF-8, whereas adsorption on the external surface becomes the dominant contribution for the nanostructured material. Impedance spectroscopy in turn revealed that the protonic conductivity of the nanocrystalline ZIF-8 was two orders of magnitude higher than that of the micron-sized powders, reaching approximately 0.5 mS·cm-1 at 94 °C and 98% relative humidity. Simple relations were derived in order to estimate the potential gains in water uptake and conductivity as a function of the particle size. This new strategy combining particle nanostructuring with surface defects, demonstrated here for one of the most know metal organic framework, is of general application to potentially boost the conductivity of other materials avoiding chemical functionalization strategies that in most if not all cases compromise their chemical stability, particularly under high humidity and high temperature conditions.
