The Impact of Housing Assistance on the Mental Health of Children in the United States.

ABSTRACT: Housing assistance policies may lead to improved mental health for children and adolescents by improving housing quality, stability, and affordability. We use a unique data linkage of the National Health Interview Survey and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development administrative data to examine the impact of housing assistance on parent-reported mental health outcomes for children ages 2 to 17 (N?= 1,967). We account for selection into housing assistance using a pseudo-waitlist method that compares children receiving assistance to those who will enter housing assistance within two years of their interview. Compared to those in the pseudo-waitlist group, we find that children living in public housing have better mental health outcomes. We do not find similar benefits for children receiving vouchers. Our results suggest that housing assistance policies can have a positive impact on mental health among disadvantaged children.

Project description:BackgroundWhile social assistance through the U.S. federal CARES Act provided expanded unemployment insurance benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic until the summer of 2020, it is unclear whether social assistance was sufficient in subsequent months to meet everyday spending needs and to curb the adverse health-related sequelae of financial hardship.MethodsUsing multivariable Poisson log-binomial regression and repeated cross-sectional Household Pulse Survey data between September and December 2020 on 91,222 working-aged U.S. adults and 28,842 adult housing renters, this study explored the associations of financial hardship with mental health outcomes and food and housing insecurity after accounting for receipt of social assistance.ResultsFinancial hardship rose progressively from September to December 2020, and disproportionately affected Black non-Hispanic and Hispanic Americans and lower-income households. Experiencing considerable financial hardship (vs no hardship) predicted nearly 3-fold higher risks of anxiety and depressive symptoms (e.g., adjusted prevalence ratio, PR of depression = 2.75, 95% CI = 2.54-2.98, P < .001), a 23-fold higher risk of food insufficiency (PR = 22.71, 95% CI = 15.62-33.01, P < .001), and a 27-fold higher risk of a likely eviction (PR = 27.20, 95% CI = 10.63-69.59, P < .001). Across outcomes, these relationships were stronger at each successively higher level of financial hardship (all P values for linear trend <0.001), and more than offset benefits from social assistance.ConclusionsEven after accounting for social assistance receipt, working-aged adults experiencing financial hardship had markedly greater risks of anxiety and depressive symptoms, food insufficiency, and an anticipated housing eviction. These findings point to the urgent need for direct and sustained cash relief well in excess of current levels of social assistance to mitigate the pandemic's adverse impacts on the well-being of millions of Americans, including vulnerable minority and low-income populations.

Project description:BackgroundIn the US, over 52.9 million (21%) adults lived with a mental health illness in 2020, with depression, being one of the commonest of these conditions. The World Health Organization ranks depression as the most important contributor to global disability. As frontline workers who are responsible for taking care of a myriad of patients daily, health workers are usually exposed to depressive situations which eventually result in the development of the condition among them. This study, therefore, developed an intervention to reduce depression among workers at the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in Washington District of Columbia, United States.MethodsA pre-intervention survey was conducted among 43 employees. The survey used the already validated Patient Health Questionnaire depression scale (PHQ-9) to determine the prevalence of depression. The WHO Healthy Workplace Model was adopted in designing an instrument for the workplace determinants of depression. An mHealth intervention was then developed and implemented among the workers. After this, a post-intervention survey was conducted among the cohort. Descriptive and inferential statistics were adopted in analyzing the data with STATA.ResultsThe pre-intervention survey showed a depression prevalence of 30.2% among the employees. The post-intervention survey, however, showed that the prevalence of depression among the employees reduced to 12.6%. The surveys also showed that the majority of employees who felt exposed to workplace hazards including harmful chemicals, expressed feelings of depression (pre-intervention = 53.6%; post-intervention = 80%).ConclusionThe intervention designed for this study was effective in reducing self-reported depression among employees. Improving employee mental health in health care facilities will require awareness raising among employees, mental health friendly policies, and regular follow up of employee mental health needs. Though this intervention was on a small scale, it shows promise for using cheap mhealth solutions in improving mental health at the work place.
