Inter-molecular hydrogen bonding in isostructural pincer complexes [OH-( ^t-BuPOCOP ^t-Bu)MCl] (M = Pd and Pt).

ABSTRACT: In the crystal structure of the isostructural title compounds, namely {2,6-bis-[(di-tert-butyl-phosphan-yl)-oxy]-4-hy-droxy-phen-yl}chlorido-palladium(II), [Pd(C₂₂H₃₉O₃P₂)Cl], 1, and {2,6-bis-[(di-tert-butyl-phosphan-yl)-oxy]-4-hy-droxy-phen-yl}chlorido-platinum(II), [Pt(C₂₂H₃₉O₃P₂)Cl], 2, the metal centres are coordinated in a distorted square-planar fashion by the POCOP pincer fragment and the chloride ligand. Both complexes form strong hydrogen-bonded chain structures through an inter-action of the OH group in the 4-position of the aromatic POCOP backbone with the halide ligand.

Bioactivity of Isostructural Hydrogen Bonding Frameworks Built from Pipemidic Acid Metal Complexes.

Project description:We report herein three novel complexes whose design was based on the approach that consists of combining commercially available antibiotics with metals to attain different physicochemical properties and promote antimicrobial activity. Thus, new isostructural three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen bonding frameworks of pipemidic acid with manganese (II), zinc (II) and calcium (II) have been synthesised by mechanochemistry and are stable under shelf conditions. Notably, the antimicrobial activity of the compounds is maintained or even increased; in particular, the activity of the complexes is augmented against Escherichia coli, a representative of Gram-negative bacteria that have emerged as a major concern in drug resistance. Moreover, the synthesised compounds display similar general toxicity (Artemia salina model) levels to the original antibiotic, pipemidic acid. The increased antibacterial activity of the synthesised compounds, together with their appropriate toxicity levels, are promising outcomes.

Project description:A new phenyl-acetylene receptor containing a carbonaceous hydrogen bond donor activates anion binding in conjunction with two stabilizing ureas. The unusual CH···Cl(-) hydrogen bond is apparent in solution by large (1)H NMR chemical shifts and by a short, linear contact in the solid state.

Intramolecular OH⋅⋅⋅Fluorine Hydrogen Bonding in Saturated, Acyclic Fluorohydrins: The γ-Fluoropropanol Motif.

Project description:Fluorination is commonly exercised in compound property optimization. However, the influence of fluorination on hydrogen-bond (HB) properties of adjacent functional groups, as well as the HB-accepting capacity of fluorine itself, is still not completely understood. Although the formation of OH⋅⋅⋅F intramolecular HBs (IMHBs) has been established for conformationally restricted fluorohydrins, such interaction in flexible compounds remained questionable. Herein is demonstrated for the first time-and in contrast to earlier reports-the occurrence of OH⋅⋅⋅F IMHBs in acyclic saturated γ-fluorohydrins, even for the parent 3-fluoropropan-1-ol. The relative stereochemistry is shown to have a crucial influence on the corresponding (h1) JOH⋅⋅⋅F values, as illustrated by syn- and anti-4-fluoropentan-2-ol (6.6 and 1.9 Hz). The magnitude of OH⋅⋅⋅F IMHBs and their strong dependence on the overall molecular conformational profile, fluorination motif, and alkyl substitution level, is rationalized by quantum chemical calculations. For a given alkyl chain, the "rule of shielding" applies to OH⋅⋅⋅F IMHB energies. Surprisingly, the predicted OH⋅⋅⋅F IMHB energies are only moderately weaker than these of the corresponding OH⋅⋅⋅OMe. These results provide new insights of the impact of fluorination of aliphatic alcohols, with attractive perspectives for rational drug design.

Pt-O bond as an active site superior to Pt0 in hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:The oxidized platinum (Pt) can exhibit better electrocatalytic activity than metallic Pt0 in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which has aroused great interest in exploring the role of oxygen in Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we select two structurally well-defined polyoxometalates Na5[H3Pt(IV)W6O24] (PtW6O24) and Na3K5[Pt(II)2(W5O18)2] (Pt2(W5O18)2) as the platinum oxide model to investigate the HER performance. Electrocatalytic experiments show the mass activities of PtW6O24/C and Pt2(W5O18)2/C are 20.175 A mg-1 and 10.976 A mg-1 at 77 mV, respectively, which are better than that of commercial 20% Pt/C (0.398 A mg-1). The in situ synchrotron radiation experiments and DFT calculations suggest that the elongated Pt-O bond acts as the active site during the HER process, which can accelerate the coupling of proton and electron and the rapid release of H2. This work complements the knowledge boundary of Pt-based electrocatalytic HER, and suggests another way to update the state-of-the-art electrocatalyst.

Replacing the Z-phenyl Ring in Tamoxifen® with a para-Connected NCN Pincer-Pt-Cl Grouping by Post-Modification †.

Project description:Post-modification of a series of NCN-pincer platinum(II) complexes [PtX(NCN-R-4)] (NCN = [C6H2(CH2NMe2)2-2,6]-, R = C(O)H, C(O)Me and C(O)Et), X = Cl- or Br-) at the para-position using the McMurry reaction was studied. The synthetic route towards two new [PtCl(NCN-R-4)] (R = C(O)Me and C(O)Et) complexes used above is likewise described. The utility and limitations of the McMurry reaction involving these pincer complexes was systematically evaluated. The predicted "homo-coupling" reaction of [PtBr(NCN-C(O)H-4)] led to the unexpected formation of 3,3',5,5'-tetra[(dimethylamino)methyl]-4,4'-bis(platinum halide)-benzophenone (halide = Br or Cl), referred to hereafter as the bispincer-benzophenone complex 13. This material was further characterized using X-ray crystal structure determination. The applicability of the pincer complexes in the McMurry reaction is shown to open a route towards the synthesis of tamoxifen-type derivatives of which one phenyl ring of Tamoxifen® itself is replaced by an NCN arylplatinum pincer fragment. The newly synthesized derivatives can be used as potential candidates in anti-cancer drug screening protocols. Two NCN-arylpincer platinum tamoxifen type derivatives, 5 and 6, were successfully synthesized and of 5 the separation of the diastereomeric E-/Z-forms was achieved. Compound 6, which is the pivaloyl protected NCN pincer platinum hydroxy-Tamoxifen® derivative, was obtained as a mixture of E-/Z-isomers. The new derivatives were further analyzed and characterized with 1H-, 13C{1H}- and 195Pt{1H}-NMR, IR, exact mass MS and elemental analysis.

Crystal structure and halogen-hydrogen bonding of a Delepine reaction inter-mediate.

Project description:The reaction of 1,5-di-bromo-pentane with urotropine results in crystals of the title mol-ecular salt, 5-bromo-urotropinium bromide [systematic name: 1-(5-bro-mo-pent-yl)-3,5,7-tri-aza-1-azoniatri-cyclo-[3.3.1.13,7]decane bromide], C11H22BrN4 +·Br- (1), crystallizing in space group P21/n. The packing in compound 1 is directed mainly by H⋯H van der Waals inter-actions and C-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds, as revealed by Hirshfeld surface analysis. Comparison with literature examples of alkyl-urotropinium halides shows that the inter-actions in 1 are consistent with those in other bromides and simple chloride and iodide species.

Synthesis of Tetrahydroquinolines via Borrowing Hydrogen Methodology Using a Manganese PN3 Pincer Catalyst.

Project description:A straightforward and selective synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines starting from 2-aminobenzyl alcohols and simple secondary alcohols is reported. This one-pot cascade reaction is based on the borrowing hydrogen methodology promoted by a manganese(I) PN3 pincer complex. The reaction selectively leads to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines thanks to a targeted choice of base. This strategy provides an atom-efficient pathway with water as the only byproduct. In addition, no further reducing agents are required.

Rotaxane PtII-complexes: mechanical bonding for chemically robust luminophores and stimuli responsive behaviour.

Project description:We report an approach to rotaxanes in which the metal ion of a cyclometallated PtII luminophore is embedded in the space created by the mechanical bond. Our results show that the interlocked ligand environment stabilises a normally labile PtII-triazole bond against displacement by competing ligands and that the crowded environment of the mechanical bond retards oxidation of the PtII centre, without perturbing the photophysical properties of the complex. When an additional pyridyl binding site is included in the axle, the luminescence of the PtII centre is quenched, an effect that can be selectively reversed by the binding of AgI. Our results suggest that readily available interlocked metal-based phosphors can be designed to be stimuli responsive and have advantages as stabilised triplet harvesting dopants for device applications.

The role of ?-? stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions in the assembly of a series of isostructural group IIB coordination compounds.

Project description:The supramolecular chemistry of coordination compounds has become an important research domain of modern inorganic chemistry. Herein, six isostructural group IIB coordination compounds containing a 2-{[(2-methoxyphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol ligand, namely dichloridobis(2-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azaniumylidene]methyl}phenolato-?O)zinc(II), [ZnCl2(C28H26N2O4)], 1, diiodidobis(2-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azaniumylidene]methyl}phenolato-?O)zinc(II), [ZnI2(C28H26N2O4)], 2, dibromidobis(2-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azaniumylidene]methyl}phenolato-?O)cadmium(II), [CdBr2(C28H26N2O4)], 3, diiodidobis(2-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azaniumylidene]methyl}phenolato-?O)cadmium(II), [CdI2(C28H26N2O4)], 4, dichloridobis(2-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azaniumylidene]methyl}phenolato-?O)mercury(II), [HgCl2(C28H26N2O4)], 5, and diiodidobis(2-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)azaniumylidene]methyl}phenolato-?O)mercury(II), [HgI2(C28H26N2O4)], 6, were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic techniques. All six compounds exhibit an infinite one-dimensional ladder in the solid state governed by the formation of hydrogen-bonding and ?-? stacking interactions. The crystal structures of these compounds were studied using geometrical and Hirshfeld surface analyses. They have also been studied using M06-2X/def2-TZVP calculations and Bader's theory of `atoms in molecules'. The energies associated with the interactions, including the contribution of the different forces, have been evaluated. In general, the ?-? stacking interactions are stronger than those reported for conventional ?-? complexes, which is attributed to the influence of the metal coordination, which is stronger for Zn than either Cd or Hg. The results reported herein might be useful for understanding the solid-state architecture of metal-containing materials that contain MIIX2 subunits and aromatic organic ligands.

Structural evidence for inter-residue hydrogen bonding observed for cellobiose in aqueous solution.

Project description:The structure of the disaccharide cellulose subunit cellobiose (4-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-D-glucose) in solution has been determined via neutron diffraction with isotopic substitution (NDIS), computer modeling and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic studies. This study shows direct evidence for an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the reducing ring HO3 hydroxyl group and the non-reducing ring oxygen (O5') that has been previously predicted by computation and NMR analysis. Moreover, this work shows that hydrogen bonding to the non-reducing ring O5' oxygen is shared between water and the HO3 hydroxyl group with an average of 50% occupancy by each hydrogen-bond donor. The glycosidic torsion angles φ(H) and ψ(H) from the neutron diffraction-based model show a fairly tight distribution of angles around approximately 22(°) and -40(°), respectively, in solution, consistent with the NMR measurements. Similarly, the hydroxymethyl torsional angles for both reducing and non-reducing rings are broadly consistent with the NMR measurements in this study, as well as with those from previous measurements for cellobiose in solution.
