Detection of Aedes flavopictus (Yamada, 1921), Netherlands, June 2019.

ABSTRACT: In June 2019, a single specimen collected at a used tyre company was identified as Aedes flavopictus (Yamada, 1921), a sibling species of Ae. albopictus. Ae. flavopictus has not been recorded outside Japan and South Korea. Although it has only shown dengue virus vector competence under laboratory conditions, its detection demonstrates the value of active surveillance at risk locations and molecular tools for timely intervention against exotic mosquitoes with potential future public health impact.

Project description:In this study, we determined for the first time the mitochondrial genome sequence of an Aedes flavopictus specimen collected in South Korea. Its mitochondrial genome was 16,060 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding, 22 tRNA, and 2 rRNA genes and a non-coding A + T rich region. The overall base composition in the heavy strand was 39.7, 8.6, 12.7, and 39% of A, G, C, and T, respectively, and the G + C content was 21.2%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Aedes spp. formed a monophyletic clade.

Meningococcal W135 Disease Vaccination Intent, the Netherlands, 2018-2019.

Project description:To control the rise in Neisseria meningitidis strain W infections, during 2018-2019, the Netherlands launched a catch-up meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) vaccination campaign for teenagers (13-18 years of age). Applying a mental models approach, we surveyed teenagers and their parents about their knowledge and beliefs about meningococcal disease, the MenACWY vaccination, vaccinations in general, and their MenACWY vaccination intentions. Using random forest analysis, we studied predictions of vaccination intentions by knowledge and beliefs. Survey response rate was 52.8% among teenagers and 59.4% among parents. MenACWY vaccination intentions were best predicted by knowledge and beliefs about vaccinations in general, surpassing knowledge and beliefs about meningococcal disease and the MenACWY vaccination. For teenagers, their parents' intention that the teenager be vaccinated was a strong predictor of the teenagers' own vaccination intention. To optimize vaccination uptake during future outbreaks, we recommend that communications emphasize the effectiveness and safety of vaccines and continue to focus on parents.

Summary of the International Patient Safety Conference, June 28-29, 2019, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Project description:Globally, medical errors are associated with an estimated $42 billion in costs to healthcare systems. A variety of errors in the delivery of healthcare have been identified by the World Health Organization and it is believed that about 50% of all errors are preventable. Initiatives to improve patient safety are now garnering increased attention across a range of countries in all regions of the world. From June 28--29, 2019, the first International Patient Safety Conference (IPSC) was held in Kathmandu, Nepal and attended by over 200 healthcare professionals as well as hospital, government, and non-governmental organization leaders. During the conference, presentations describing the experience with errors in healthcare and solutions to minimize future occurrence of adverse events were presented. Examples of systems implemented to prevent future errors in patient care were also described. A key outcome of this conference was the initiation of conversations and communication among important stakeholders for patient safety. In addition, attendees and dignitaries in attendance all reaffirmed their commitment to furthering actions in hospitals and other healthcare facilities that focus on reducing the risk of harm to patients who receive care in the Nepali healthcare system. This conference provides an important springboard for the development of patient-centered strategies to improve patient safety across a range of patient care environments in public and private sector healthcare institutions.

Occupation- and age-associated risk of SARS-CoV-2 test positivity, the Netherlands, June to October 2020.

Project description:High coronavirus incidence has prompted the Netherlands to implement a second lockdown. To elucidate the epidemic's development preceding this second wave, we analysed weekly test positivity in public test locations by population subgroup between 1 June and 17 October 2020. Hospitality and public transport workers, driving instructors, hairdressers and aestheticians had higher test positivity compared with a reference group of individuals without a close-contact occupation. Workers in childcare, education and healthcare showed lower test positivity.

Molecular epidemiology of mumps viruses in the Netherlands, 2017-2019.

Project description:Mumps cases continue to occur, also in countries with a relatively high vaccination rate. The last major outbreaks of mumps in the Netherlands were in 2009-2012 and thereafter, only small clusters and single cases were reported. Molecular epidemiology can provide insights in the circulation of mumps viruses. The aims of the present study were to analyze the molecular epidemiology of mumps viruses in the Netherlands in 2017-2019 and to compare the phylogenetic trees built from sequence data of near complete mumps virus genomes or from the SH gene and non-coding regions (SH+NCRs). To this end, Sanger sequence data from SH+NCRs were analyzed from 82 mumps genotype G viruses. In addition, near complete genomes were obtained from 10 mumps virus isolates using next-generation sequencing. Analysis of SH+NCRs sequences of mumps genotype G viruses revealed the presence of two major genetic lineages in the Netherlands, which was confirmed by analysis of near complete genomes. Comparison of phylogenetic trees built with SH+NCRs or near complete genomes indicated that the topology was similar, while somewhat longer branches were present in the phylogenetic tree with near complete genomes. These results confirm that analysis of SH + NCRs sequence data is a useful approach for molecular surveillance. Furthermore, data from recent mumps genotype G viruses might indicate (intermittent) circulation of mumps genotype G viruses in the Netherlands in 2017-2019.

Extensively drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST307 outbreak, north-eastern Germany, June to October 2019.

Project description:From June to October 2019, 17 patients (six infected, 11 colonised) with an extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae strain were notified from four Western Pomerania medical facilities. The XDR K. pneumoniae produced carbapenemases NDM-1 and OXA-48, and was only susceptible to chloramphenicol, tigecycline and cefiderocol. Synergistic activity was observed for the combination of aztreonam plus ceftazidime-avibactam. Genomic analyses showed all isolates belonged to K. pneumoniae sequence type 307. Control measures and further investigations are ongoing.
