Heterogeneously Catalysed Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Menthol in a Fixed-Bed Reactor in the Gas Phase.

ABSTRACT: For the first time, the oxidative dehydrogenation of (-)-menthol to (-)-menthone and (+)-isomenthone in a marketable quality was carried out in a continuous gas phase reactor as a sustainable process using molecular oxygen as green oxidant and solid catalysts which do not contaminate the product mixture and which are easily to remove. The diastereomeric purity remained largely unchanged. Three types of catalysts were found to be very active and selective in the formation of menthone and isomenthone: AgSr/SiO₂, CuO distributed on a basic support and RuMnCe/CeO₂, where Ru, Mn and Ce exist in an oxidized state. The best overall yield of menthon/isomenthone obtained with an Ag-based catalyst was 58 % at 64 % selectivity, with a Cu-based catalyst 41 % at 51 % selectivity and with a Ru-based catalyst 68 % at 73 % selectivity. Reaction conditions were widely optimized.

Structured Monolithic Catalysts vs. Fixed Bed for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane.

Project description:The deposition of V-based catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propene on cordierite honeycomb monoliths was optimised as a strategy to decrease the contact time in a structured reactor with respect to a conventional fixed bed one. 10 wt% VOx supported over SiO₂ or Al₂O₃ were used as catalysts, deposed over the monolith using silica or alumina as primer, respectively. Both the alumina supported catalyst and the bohemite primer precursor were effectively deposed by dip-coating from stable powder suspensions, whereas insufficient adhesion was obtained when loading pre-synthesised SiO₂ over the cordierite. A new method based on sol-gel production of SiO₂ from tetraethylortosilicate (TEOS) over the monolith surface was set up. A correlation was derived for the prevision of the amount of silica deposed depending on the amount of TEOS. Both primer and catalyst loading were optimised as for uniformity and stability of the coating and resulted 0.5⁻1 wt % primer and 0.15 wt % of catalyst. Activity testing confirmed the strong improvement of propene productivity by increasing the time factor (i.e. Ncm³ of flowing reactant/min gcat), which ended in a one order of magnitude increase of productivity for the honeycomb-supported samples with respect to the fixed bed configuration.

The international space station packed bed reactor experiment: capillary effects in gas-liquid two-phase flows.

Project description:Experimental data on flow patterns and pressure drop in two-phase gas-liquid flows through a packed bed obtained aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are analyzed in the limit of low flow rates. Four distinct flow regimes (dispersed bubble, pulse, elongated or large bubble, and gas continuous) are observed and the transition boundaries are identified by a change in the slope of the pressure gradient versus flow rate. It is found that the pressure drop is a function of flow history with the relative magnitude of the hysteresis decreasing with increasing gas or liquid flow rates. Pressure drop (or friction factor) correlations are presented for each of the flow regimes. The capillary or interfacial contribution to the pressure gradient is found to be dominant in the gas channeling regime but comparable to the viscous contribution in the large bubble regime. Preliminary data indicating the slow accumulation of the gas in the bed in the large bubble regime over a longer time period and the intermittent nature of this regime are also presented.

Development of a fixed-bed anammox reactor with high treatment potential.

Project description:A plug-flow type anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reactor was developed using malt ceramics (MC) produced from carbonized spent grains as the biomass carriers for anammox sludge. Partial nitrified effluent of the filtrate from the sludge dehydrator of a brewery company was used as influent to a 20 L anammox reactor using MC. An average volumetric nitrogen removal rate (VNR) of 8.78 kg-N/m(3)/day was maintained stably for 76 days with 1 h of HRT. In a larger anammox reactor (400 L), an average VNR of 4.84 kg-N/m(3)/day could be maintained for 86 days during the treatment of low strength synthetic inorganic wastewater. As a result of bacterial community analysis for the 20 L anammox reactor, Asahi BRW1, probably originating from the wastewater collected at Asahi Breweries, was detected as the dominant anammox bacterium. These anammox reactors were characterized by a high NH(4)-N removal capacity for low strength wastewater with a short hydraulic retention time.

Alkylation of Benzene with Propylene in a Flow-Through Membrane Reactor and Fixed-Bed Reactor: Preliminary Results.

Project description:Benzene alkylation with propylene was studied in the gas phase using a catalytic membrane reactor and a fixed-bed reactor in the temperature range of 200-300 °C and with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 51 h-1. β-zeolite was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using silica, aluminum metal and TEAOH as precursors. The membrane's XRD patterns showed good crystallinity for the β-zeolite film, while scanning electron microscopy SEM results indicated that its random polycrystalline film was approximately 1 μm thick. The powders' specific area was determined to be 400 m²×g-1 by N₂ adsorption/desorption, and the TPD results indicated an overall acidity of 3.4 mmol NH₃×g-1. Relative to the powdered catalyst, the catalytic membrane showed good activity and product selectivity for cumene.

Noncatalytic Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM): Gas-Phase Reactions in a Jet Stirred Reactor (JSR).

Project description:Oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is a promising technique for converting methane to higher hydrocarbons in a single reactor. Catalytic OCM is known to proceed via both gas-phase and surface chemical reactions. It is essential to first implement an accurate gas-phase model and then to further develop comprehensive homogeneous-heterogeneous OCM reaction networks. In this work, OCM gas-phase kinetics using a jet-stirred reactor are studied in the absence of a catalyst and simulated using a 0-D reactor model. Experiments were conducted in OCM-relevant operating conditions under various temperatures, residence times, and inlet CH4/O2 ratios. Simulations of different gas-phase models related to methane oxidation were implemented and compared against the experimental data. Quantities of interest (QoI) and rate of production analyses on hydrocarbon products were also performed to evaluate the models. The gas-phase models taken from catalytic reaction networks could not adequately describe the experimental gas-phase performances. NUIGMech1.1 was selected as the most comprehensive model to describe the OCM gas-phase kinetics; it is recommended for further use as the gas-phase model for constructing homogeneous-heterogeneous reaction networks.

Environmental Impact Evaluation for Heterogeneously Catalysed Starch Oxidation.

Project description:Oxidised starch is currently produced from native starch using sodium hypochlorite as an oxidising agent. The use of hypochlorite has undesired side reactions and produces stoichiometric amounts of waste (salt), thus alternative oxidation methods are desired. In this study, the potential of two catalysed starch oxidation methods to reduce the environmental impact (EI) of oxidised starch production are assessed. We compared the EI of oxidation with molecular oxygen (heterogeneously catalysed) and hydrogen peroxide (homogeneously catalysed) to hypochlorite oxidation through life cycle assessment (LCA). The results confirm that hypochlorite oxidation is the main environmental hotspot in the current process of oxidised starch production, and that both hydroperoxide oxidation and molecular oxygen oxidation can significantly lower the EI of the process. The impact reduction is most significant in the categories of freshwater eutrophication (∼67 %), ozone depletion (∼66 %), climate change (35-60 %) and resource use (40 %-78 %) for peroxide and molecular oxygen oxidation, respectively.

Project description:The dataset presented in this article is the supplementary data for the research article by Żukowski and Berkowicz (doi:10.1016/j.combustflame.2019.05.024) [1], in which for the first time the inert and catalytic cenospheres were used as the fluidised bed material, giving the possibility to burn liquids inside the fluidised bed without the need for using specialised dosing systems. The instantaneous concentrations of the gaseous products during the combustion of glycerol samples were detected using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR, Gasmet DX-4000). The accurate composition at the outlet of the reactor makes it possible to evaluate and verify new kinetic models of the glycerol combustion in the fluidised bed. It also will be helpful in creating new simplified models. The data presented here is essential for the evaluation of CFD combustion models which have to include accurate kinetic data.

The use of cenospheres as a bed material made it possible to free sink of PE particles in the bed and rule out its combustion in freeboard. It also lead to elimination of soot formation. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of flue gases were performed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR, Gasmet DX-4000). This data article provides detailed information on changes in product concentration at intervals of a few seconds.

Project description:A PdII catalyst system has been used to successfully catalyse two mechanistically distinct reactions in a one-pot procedure: dehydrogenation of 2,2-disubstituted cyclopentane-1,3-diones and the subsequent oxidative Heck coupling. This auto-tandem catalytic reaction is applicable to both batch and continuous flow processes, with the latter being the first example of a tandem aerobic dehydrogenation/oxidative Heck in flow. In addition, a telescoped reaction involving enantioselective desymmetrisation of the all-C quaternary centre was successfully achieved.
