DNase I-hypersensitive sites (DHSs) serve key roles in the regulation of gene transcription as markers of <i>cis</i>-regulatory elements (CREs). Recent advances in next-generation sequencing have enabled the genome-wide location and annotation of DHSs in a variety of cells.
