The mean age of the study participants was 34.1 years. Majority of the participants (83%) were diploma midwives. The score of knowledge of participants on immediate new-born care was 17.7% good and 25.2% poor. More than half (52.4%) of midwives practiced immediate new-born care. Midwives working in health center have 82% lower odds of new-born care compared to those working in hospital (p?=?0.000, OR?=?0.18 (0.07, 0.43).

Project description:BackgroundEssential newborn care (ENC) is the most vital care, particularly during the first hour of the newborn's life. This study aimed to assess health professionals' knowledge and practice of ENC at public health facilities in the Bench-Sheko Zone, southwest Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among health professionals at selected public health facilities in the Bench-Sheko Zone of southwest Ethiopia. The data were collected using a self-administered, tested, and structured questionnaire. The data collected were entered in Epi info version 7 and analyzed using SPSS version 22. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were performed to determine the association between the dependent and independent variables. Categorical variables were presented in tabulations by frequencies and percentages. Continuous data were summarized by the mean score and standard deviation. Statistical significance was set at a p-value < 0.05.ResultsAmong the 157 respondents, 60 (38.2%) and 97 (61.8%) had good knowledge and good practice of ENC, respectively. The factors associated with good knowledge of ENC were being female (AOR = 0.72, 95% CI [0.48, 0.86]), the availability of on-the-job training (AOR = 2.00, 95% CI [1.01, 3.97]), and interest in working in the delivery room (AOR = 2.5, 95% CI [1.27, 4.94]). Better educational qualification (AOR = 4.12, 95% CI [1.67, 10.18]) and the availability of on-the-job training (AOR = 3.60, 95% CI [1.58, 8.18]) were the factors associated with good practice of ENC.ConclusionKnowledge of essential newborn care among health professionals was very low; however, the practice of essential newborn care was somewhat average compared to other studies in Ethiopia. Being female, the availability of on-the-job training and interest in working in the delivery room were the factors associated with a good knowledge of ENC; while educational qualification and the availability of on-the-job training were the factors associated with a good practice of ENC. Therefore, concerned bodies should consider the provision of refreshment on-the-job training, upgrading the qualification of health professionals, and providing incentives and motivators to improve interest in working in the delivery room.

Project description:Background:Hypoglycemia is an acute medical situation that occurs when blood glucose level falls below 70?mg/dl. Although prevention of hypoglycemia is one cornerstone in the management of diabetes mellitus, its prevention practice among patients with diabetes mellitus is insufficiently studied. Moreover, the existed scarce literature in Ethiopia revealed hypoglycemia prevention practice is inadequate. Thus, this study tried to assess hypoglycemia prevention practices and associated factors among diabetic patients. Methods:Hospital-based cross-sectional study design was employed from March 1 to April 1, 2018, in the central zone of Tigray regional state of Ethiopia. A total of 272 diabetes mellitus patients selected by a systematic random sampling method were included in the study. Data were entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 23 for further analysis. The binary logistic regression model (AOR, 95% CI, and p value?<?0.05) was used to determine the predictors of hypoglycemia prevention practice. Results:The mean age of respondents was 43.62 years, and about 100 (63.2%) participants had good hypoglycemia prevention practice. Good knowledge on hypoglycemia (AOR?=?10.34; 95% CI [5.41, 19.89]), having a glucometer at home (AOR?=?3.02; 95% CI [1.12, 8.12]), favorable attitude towards diabetes mellitus (AOR?=?2.36 CI [1.26, 4.39]), and being governmental employee (AOR?=?5.19, 95% CI [1.63, 16.58]) were positive predictors of good hypoglycemia prevention practice. However, being divorced (AOR?=?0.13, 95% CI [0.32, 0.53]) was found negatively associated with good hypoglycemia prevention practice. Conclusion:Only two-thirds of the study participants were found to have good hypoglycemia prevention practices. Healthcare personnel and Ethiopian diabetic association should promote patients' attitude towards DM and knowledge on hypoglycemia by strengthening information, education, and communication program. Stakeholders should also try to provide glucometers to diabetic patients.

Project description:BackgroundEven if modern medicine is becoming more widely available, a considerable portion of the world's population continues to rely on complementary and alternative medicine. Complementary and alternative medicine is used by 80% of the population in developing countries for their health care. The study was conducted to assess Knowledge, Attitude and practice towards complementary and alternative medicine and associated factors among health care professionals in public health facilities of Hadiya Zone, South Ethiopia.MethodsThe study was conducted in Hadiya Zone from October 10 to October 30, 2019. A facility-based cross-sectional study design was employed using simple random sampling methods. Three hundred sixty six health care professionals were selected using a simple random sample method. The data were collected using a standardized self-administered and pre-tested questionnaire that was adapted from different literatures. We used descriptive statistics, as well as bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. An association was determined using P-values less than 0.05 and 95 percent confidence intervals. The results of the study were presented using texts and tables.ResultsThree hundred and fifty-five respondents were interviewed, with a 97 percent respondent rate. Two hundred thirty-two (65.4%) of the study participants have good knowledge towards complementary and alternative medicine, 216 (60.8%) have a favorable attitude toward complementary and alternative medicine, and 182 (51.3%) have utilized it in the previous two years. Some of the factors associated with knowledge, attitude, and practice towards complementary and alternative medicine were health care professionals who have contact with patients who seek complementary and alternative medicine [AOR = 1.89(95% CI; 1.18, 3.03), female health care professionals [AOR = 2.43(95% CI; 2.68, 9.74), and more than six years work experience [AOR = 1.68(95% CI; 1.04, 2.71).ConclusionThe knowledge, attitude, and practice of complementary and alternative medicine among health care professionals were low. Creating communication lines with patients and facilitating the integration of complementary and alternative medicine with modern medicine.

Project description:Preconception care is biomedical, social, and behavioural care provided for a woman or couple before conception occurs or throughout their reproductive year. In Ethiopia, it's reported that the majority of health care providers had poor knowledge and practice of preconception care. The institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 359 obstetric care providers to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice of preconception care in West Shoa Zone, Ethiopia. A stratified, simple random sampling technique selected five hospitals, 46 health centers, and study participants. Pretested and structured questionnaires were used to collect data. Data were entered into Epidata and exported to SPSS for analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were employed to identify an association between the independent predictors and the outcome variables. In this study, 173(48.2%) and 124(34.5%) of the obstetric care providers had good knowledge and practice of preconception care, respectively. Two-thirds 255(71%) of providers had a favorable attitude toward preconception care. The odds of having good knowledge were higher among Midwives' providers [AOR: 2.03, 95%CI: 1.09-3.77] and had training on HIV testing [AOR: 3.5, 95%CI: 1.9-6.4]. The presence of a library [AOR: 1.7, 95%CI: 1.04-2.85] and internet access [AOR: 3.4, 95%CI: 2.0-5.8] in working health facility had a higher odds of good knowledge about preconception. Degree and above holders [AOR: 3.1, 95%CI: 1.5-6.1] also had higher odds of good preconception knowledge than diploma holders. Similarly, the odds of having good practice of preconception care were higher among health care providers: who did screening for reproductive life plans [AOR: 3.7, 95%CI:1.8-7.4], worked in maternity and child health unit [AOR:4.2,95%CI:2.0-8.6], perceive all health facilities should give preconception care services [AOR:2.3,95%CI:1.2-4.3], and perceive all health care providers should provide preconception services [AOR:3.0, 95%CI: 1.7-5.5]. This study found that more than half of obstetric care providers' had poor knowledge, favorable attitude, and poor practice of preconception care. Provision of training, carrier development, and installation of internet and library services should be enhanced.

Project description:BackgroundThe availability of a skilled birth attendant is widely recognized as a critical factor in reducing maternal and newborn mortality. Competence of maternal healthcare providers directly affects quality of care and health outcomes. This study assessed competence of midwives and associated factors in provision of care during labor, and the immediate postpartum period at public health facilities in Tigray, Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was employed to collect data through direct observation of the performance of 144 midwives selected from 57 health facilities. Data were collected from January to February 2015 by 12 experienced midwives who were trained on basic emergency obstetric care and had previous experience with data collection. Using a standardized competence checklist, adapted from International confederation of midwives, data collectors interviewed and directly observed the performance of midwives from admission of laboring mothers to six hours after delivery. Multivariable linear regression was used to identify predicators associated with overall clinical competence of midwives.ResultThe mean competence score of midwives was found to be 51%. In multivariable linear regression, male midwifery professionals (p = 0.022), availability of up to date job aids in work place (p = 0.04) and being recognized for improved performance (p = 0.005) were significantly associated with competence of midwives in the provision of care during labor, childbirth and immediate postpartum period.ConclusionCompetence of midwives was found to be low to provide safe and quality maternity care in the region. Male gender, availability of complete job aids and receiving recognition/awards for better performance were predicted competence. This requires attention and investment from Tigray regional health bureau and health development partners working on maternal and child health. Competence based in-service training, on-the-job mentoring, availing up to dated standard job aids, recognition of high performing midwives are recommended to improve the quality of maternity care in public health facilities of the region. Moreover, affirmative actions including on-the-job training and supervision are needed to improve the competence of female midwives.

Project description:ObjectivesPartograph is one of the best effective obstetric tools used to monitoring labor and prevent prolonged or obstructed labor which accounts for about 22% of maternal deaths in Ethiopia. This study was aimed to assess partograph utilization and associated factors among obstetric care givers. Facility based cross sectional study was used in the randomly selected health facilities. Total 220 obstetric care givers were selected using simple random sampling technique. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the associations of each explanatory variable with the outcome variable. Finally, odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval and p-value of 0.05 was used to identify significant variables.ResultOut of 198 obstetric care providers, 73.3% used partograph to monitor progress of labor. Those who were diploma holders (AOR?=?3.8, CI?=?2.2-6.2), receiving basic emergency obstetrics and new born care training (AOR?=?5.6, CI 1.1-28.5), age between 20 and 29 years-old (AOR?=?0.1, CI?=?0.01-0.50), and male health care providers (AOR?=?0.37, CI?=?0.44-0.95) were factors significantly associated with partograph utilization. Partograph utilization in this study was below the WHO recommendation. Especial emphasizes and interventions should be given to increase partograph utilization.

Project description:IntroductionCoronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease, which caused by a novel coronavirus. The disease disrupts health systems and resulting in social, political, and economic crises. Health professionals are in front of this pandemic and always work in a high-risk environment. The best prevention for COVID-19 is avoiding exposure to the virus. Some studies reported health professional's practice of precautionary measures for COVID-19. Nevertheless, a few have identified factors affecting. As such, this study aimed to fill those research gaps in the study setting.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 428 health professionals involved from the public health facilities of the Gamo zone, southern Ethiopia. A simple random sampling method employed, and the data collected by the interviewer-administered Open Data Kit survey tool and observational checklist. The data analyzed in Stata version 15, and a binary logistic regression model used to identify factors. In this study, a statistically significant association declared at P< 0.05.ResultsIn this study, 35.3% (95%CI: 30.7%, 39.8%) of health professionals' had a good practice on precautionary measures for the COVID-19 pandemic. Use hand sanitizer or wash hands continuously with soap and water (68.9%), cover nose and mouth with a tissue during sneezing or coughing (67.3%), and use facemask in crowds (56.8%) were the most common practice reported by study participants. Marital status, being married (AOR = 1.84, 95%CI: 1.06, 3.18), good knowledge on the COVID-19 pandemic (AOR = 2.02, 95%CI: 1.02, 3.18), and positive attitude towards precautionary measures for the COVID-19 were factors showed significant association with the practice.ConclusionsThe magnitude of good practice of precautionary measures for the COVID-19 pandemic among health professionals was low. As such, different interventions to improve the knowledge and attitude of health professionals in the health care system are highly needed to boost the practice and to advance service delivery.

Project description:BackgroundNursing documentation documents the everyday activities of nursing care that are planned and implemented on individual patients by nurses of different educational statuses. Documentation of nursing activities is the key source of clinical information to meet professional and legal requirements. Although nursing documentation is an important part of nursing practice, it is commonly undone by nurses working with patients for different reasons.ObjectiveTo assess the documentation practice and their associated factors among nurses working in public hospitals in the Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 402 nurses and a simple random sampling technique was used to select participants. Data were collected using a pretested structured self-administered questionnaire adapted from previous studies. Statistical Package for the Social Science version 26 was used for data entry and analysis. Independent variables with p-value < 0.25 from bivariable logistic regression were entered into the multivariable logistic regression method and significant associations were obtained at an adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval and p-value < 0.05.ResultsIn this study, the good documentation practice among nurses was 42% [95% confidence interval (CI), 37.2-46.8]. There was a statistically significant relationship between documentation practice and age [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 2.590 (95% CI: 1.4-4.79)], educational status [AOR: 2.248 (95% CI: 1.13-4.48)], hospital level [AOR: 4.185 (95% CI: 2.63-6.72)], work experience (2-5 years and > 5 years) [AOR: 4.066 (95% CI: 1.55-10.64)] and [AOR: 5.395 (95% CI: 1.97-14.81)] respectively and in-service training [AOR: 0.582 (95% CI: 0.366-0.923)].Conclusion and recommendationsThis study demonstrated that the good practice of documentation among nurses was found to be low. Age, educational status, working in comprehensive specialized hospitals, work experience, and having in-service training had significant associations with documentation practice. It is very important to plan and intervene with different strategies, such as providing training for young nurses, nurses with low educational status, nurses working in primary hospitals, and nurses with less than two years of work experience on documentation standards, to create positive attitudes and enhance their knowledge.

Project description:BackgroundCutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease that is caused by a Leishmania parasite and transmitted by the bite of infected female sandflies. Community awareness is an essential component of disease control and prevention. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the community's knowledge, attitude, and practice toward CL in Wolaita zone, southern Ethiopia.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study design was employed to include 422 study subjects selected using a systematic sampling technique from two districts, Kindo Didaye and Sodo Zuria. A pretested structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the household heads. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between the participants' knowledge about CL and socio-demographic characteristics.ResultsOut of the 422 study participants, only 19% had good knowledge of CL in general. Most (67.1%) of the respondents knew CL by its local name ("bolbo" or "moora") though this knowledge varied highly over the study districts. The majority (86.3%) of respondents did not know how CL is acquired, though they considered CL a health problem. Most (62.8%) respondents believed that CL was an untreatable disease. Most (77%) participants responded that CL patients preferred to go to traditional healers for treatment. Herbal treatment was the most (50.2%) used to treat CL. Knowledge about CL was significantly associated with sex, age, and study districts.ConclusionThe overall knowledge, attitude, and practice about CL and its prevention in the study area were low. This emphasizes the need to implement health education and awareness campaign to reduce the risk of CL infection. Policymakers and stakeholders should also give due attention to the prevention and treatment of CL in the study area.
