Project description:We introduce a dataset to provide insights about the photoplethysmography (PPG) signal captured from the wrist in presence of motion artifacts and the accelerometer signal, simultaneously acquired from the same wrist. The data presented were collected by the electronics research team of the Department of Information Engineering, Polytechnic University of Marche, Ancona, Italy. This article describes data recorded from 7 subjects and includes 105 PPG signals (15 for each subject) and the corresponding 105 tri-axial accelerometer signals measured with a sampling frequency of 400 Hz. These data can be reused for testing machine learning algorithms for human activity recognition.

Project description:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a severe acute respiratory syndrome infection has spread rapidly across the world since its emergence in 2019 and drastically altered our way of life. Patients who have recovered from COVID-19 may still face persisting respiratory damage from the virus, necessitating long-term supervision after discharge to closely assess pulmonary function during rehabilitation. Therefore, developing portable spirometers for pulmonary function tests is of great significance for convenient home-based monitoring during recovery. Here, we propose a wireless, portable pulmonary function monitor for rehabilitation care after COVID-19. It is composed of a breath-to-electrical (BTE) sensor, a signal processing circuit, and a Bluetooth communication unit. The BTE sensor, with a compact size and light weight of 2.5 cm3 and 1.8 g respectively, is capable of converting respiratory biomechanical motions into considerable electrical signals. The output signal stability is greater than 93% under 35%-81% humidity, which allows for ideal expiration airflow sensing. Through a wireless communication circuit system, the signals can be received by a mobile terminal and processed into important physiological parameters, such as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). The FEV1/FVC ratio is then calculated to further evaluate pulmonary function of testers. Through these measurement methods, the acquired pulmonary function parameters are shown to exhibit high accuracy (>97%) in comparison to a commercial spirometer. The practical design of the self-powered flow spirometer presents a low-cost and convenient method for pulmonary function monitoring during rehabilitation from COVID-19.

Project description:This paper presents the collected experimental data for water quality monitoring which was conducted in ten experiments by using five different common sources of water contaminants namely soil, salt, washing powder, chlorine and vinegar and their combination. The data were collected indoors at room temperature during the day for several days using sensors that measure pH, turbidity, flow rate, and conductivity in water. The water consumption risk (CR) was calculated as deviation based on the water quality parameters standards proposed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the South African Department of Water Affairs (DWA), with respect to the sensor measurement readings obtained. While the error measurements were calculated based on the expected parameter measurement per conducted experiment and repeated for 26 measurements. Pure tap water was the benchmark of water safe for human consumption. The first five experiments were performed by introducing each contaminant into the water and thereafter, two contaminants in the sixth experiment and their additions until all different contaminants were experimented at once in the last experiment.

Project description:This dataset was collected as part of the InWaterSense project with a wireless sensor network (WSN) installed in a site in river Sitnica in Kosovo, as a case study for monitoring remotely, continuously and in real-time the surface water quality in Kosovo and how it can be extended to all surface waters in the country for quality assurance. Values of four water quality parameters are provided in the dataset, i.e., temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, and dissolved oxygen measured by respective static sensors of WSN in the time frame between May 2015 to beginning of January 2016 and every 10 min, counting to slightly over 100k measurement records in total. The dataset is hosted at the Mendeley Data repository (Ahmedi and Ahmedi 2021), and is related to the research article entitled "InWaterSense: An Intelligent Wireless Sensor Network for Monitoring Surface Water Quality to a River in Kosovo" (Ahmedi et al., 2018). The reuse potential of the dataset to the scientific community is widespread, from environmental engineering to artificial intelligence to the health sector just to mention few. Moreover, practitioners might benefit from this dataset in driving forth the pollution prevention policies and techniques. Data were acquired measuring water quality using static sensors installed as part of a wireless sensor network in Sitnica river in the Plemetin village near Prishtina, then transmitted to the gateway device also in Plemetin via the ZigBee protocol, and finally transmitted remotely via GPRS to the server machine in the premises of the University of Prishtina. The data received from sensors are in real-time stored in the MS SQL server.

Project description:In this paper, we present the data set of surface electromyography (sEMG) and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) against human muscle activity during routine activities. The Myo Thalamic Armband is used to acquire the signals from muscles below the elbow. The dataset comprises of raw sEMG, accelerometer, gyro and derived orientation signals for four different activities. The four activities, which are selected for this dataset acquisition, are resting, typing, push up exercise and lifting a heavy object. Therefore, there are five associated files against each activity. The IMU data can be fused with the sEMG data for better classification of activities especially to separate aggressive and normal activities. The data is valuable for researchers working on assistive computer aided support systems for subjects with disabilities due to physical or mental disorder.

Project description:Background and aimsRespiratory depression is a rare but serious complication during opioid administration. Therefore, early detection of signs of deterioration is paramount. The current standard of care of using manual intermittent respiratory rate (RR) measurement is labour intensive and inefficient. We evaluated a wireless sensor monitor, Aingeal (Renew Health Ltd, Ireland), to continuously monitor RR, heart rate (HR) and temperature compared to standard clinical measurements.MethodsPatients who underwent major gynaecological operations and received postoperative opioid patient-controlled analgesia were recruited. Patients were connected to the sensor monitor via a central station software platform. The primary outcome was comparison of RR between sensor and nursing monitoring, with secondary outcomes being HR and temperature between two methods. Feedback from patients and healthcare providers was also collected. Bland-Altman analyses were used to compare the vital signs recorded in sensor against those in patient's electronic record.ResultsA total of 1121 hours of vital signs data were analysed. Bias for RR was -0.90 (95% confidence interval (CI): -9.39, 7.60) breaths/min between nursing and averaged sensor readings. Bias for heart rate was -1.12 (95% CI: -26.27, 24.03) and bias for temperature was 1.45 (95% CI: -5.67, 2.76) between the two methods.ConclusionThere is satisfactory agreement of RR measurements, as well as HR and temperature measurements, by the wireless sensor monitor with standard clinical intermittent monitoring with overall good user experience.

Project description:A wristwatch-based wireless sensor platform for IoT wearable health monitoring applications is presented. The paper describes the platform in detail, with a particular focus given to the design of a novel and compact wireless sub-system for 868 MHz wristwatch applications. An example application using the developed platform is discussed for arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate measurement using optical photoplethysmography (PPG). A comparison of the wireless performance in the 868 MHz and the 2.45 GHz bands is performed. Another contribution of this work is the development of a highly integrated 868 MHz antenna. The antenna structure is printed on the surface of a wristwatch enclosure using laser direct structuring (LDS) technology. At 868 MHz, a low specific absorption rate (SAR) of less than 0.1% of the maximum permissible limit in the simulation is demonstrated. The measured on-body prototype antenna exhibits a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 36 MHz, a peak realized gain of -4.86 dBi and a radiation efficiency of 14.53% at 868 MHz. To evaluate the performance of the developed 868 MHz sensor platform, the wireless communication range measurements are performed in an indoor environment and compared with a commercial Bluetooth wristwatch device.

Project description:ObjectiveRecording seizures using personal seizure diaries can be challenging during everyday life and many seizures are missed or mis-reported. People living with epilepsy could benefit by having a more accurate and objective wearable EEG system for counting seizures that can be used outside of the hospital. The objective of this study was to (1) determine which seizure types can be electrographically recorded from the scalp below the hairline, (2) determine epileptologists' ability to identify electrographic seizures from single-channels extracted from full-montage wired-EEG, and (3) determine epileptologists' ability to identify electrographic seizures from Epilog, a wireless single-channel EEG sensor.MethodsEpilog sensors were worn concurrently during epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) monitoring. During standard-of-care review, epileptologists were asked if the electrographic portion of the seizure was visible on single channels of wired electrodes at locations proximal to Epilog sensors, and if focal-onset, which electrode was closest to the focus. From these locations, single channels of EEG extracted from wired full-montage EEG and the proximal Epilog sensor were presented to 3 blinded epileptologists along with markers for when known seizures occurred (taken from the standard-of-care review). Control segments at inter-ictal times were included as control. The epileptologists were asked whether a seizure event was visible in the single channel EEG record at or near the marker.ResultsA total of 75 seizures were recorded from 22 of 40 adults that wore Epilog during their visit to the EMU. Epileptologists were able to visualize known seizure activity on at least one of the wired electrodes proximal to Epilog sensors for all seizure events. Epileptologists accurately identified seizures in 71% of Epilog recordings and 84% of single-channel wired recordings and were 92% accurate identifying seizures with Epilog when those seizures ended in a clinical convulsion compared to those that did not (>55%).ConclusionsEpileptologists are able to visualize seizure activity on single-channels of EEG at locations where Epilog sensors are easily placed on the scalp below hairline. Manual review of seizure annotations can be done quickly and accurately (>70% TP and >98% PPV) on single-channel EEG data. Reviewing single-channel EEG is more accurate than what has been reported in the literature on self-reporting seizures in seizure diaries, the current standard of care for seizure counting outside of the EMU.SignificanceWearable EEG will be important for seizure monitoring outside of the hospital. Epileptologists can accurately identify seizures in single-channel EEG, better than patient self-reporting in diaries based on the literature. Automated or semi-automated seizure detection on single channels of EEG could be used in the future to objectively count seizures to complement the standard of care outside of the EMU without the overt burden upon epileptologist review.

Project description:Flexible respiratory monitoring devices have become available for outside-hospital application scenarios attributable to their improved system wearability. However, the complex fabrication process of such flexible devices results in high prices, limiting their applications in real-life scenarios. This study proposes a flexible, low-cost, and easy-processing paper-based humidity sensor for sleep respiratory monitoring. A paper humidity sensing model was established and sensors under different design parameters were processed and tested, achieving high sensitivity of 5.45 kΩ/%RH and good repeatability with a matching rate of over 85.7%. Furthermore, the sensor patch with a dual-channel 3D structure was designed to distinguish between oral and nasal breathing from origin signals proved in the simulated breathing signal monitoring test. The sensor patch was applied in the sleep respiratory monitoring of a healthy volunteer and an obstruct sleep apnea patient, demonstrating its ability to distinguish between different respiratory patterns as well as various breathing modes.

Project description:Working towards the development of robust motion recognition systems for assistive technology control, the widespread approach has been to use a plethora of, often times, multi-modal sensors. In this paper, we develop single-sensor motion recognition systems. Utilising the peripheral nature of surface electromyography (sEMG) data acquisition, we optimise the information extracted from sEMG sensors. This allows the reduction in sEMG sensors or provision of contingencies in a system with redundancies. In particular, we process the sEMG readings captured at the trapezius descendens and platysma muscles. We demonstrate that sEMG readings captured at one muscle contain distinct information on movements or contractions of other agonists. We used the trapezius and platysma muscle sEMG data captured in able-bodied participants and participants with tetraplegia to classify shoulder movements and platysma contractions using white-box supervised learning algorithms. Using the trapezius sensor, shoulder raise is classified with an accuracy of 99%. Implementing subject-specific multi-class classification, shoulder raise, shoulder forward and shoulder backward are classified with a 94% accuracy amongst object raise and shoulder raise-and-hold data in able bodied adults. A three-way classification of the platysma sensor data captured with participants with tetraplegia achieves a 95% accuracy on platysma contraction and shoulder raise detection.
