Water Is a Cagey Liquid.

ABSTRACT: Liquid water is considered poorly understood. How are water's physical properties encoded in its molecular structure? We introduce a statistical mechanical model (CageWater) of water's hydrogen-bonding (HB) and Lennard-Jones (LJ) interactions. It predicts the energetic and volumetric and anomalous properties accurately. Yet, because the model is analytical, it is essentially instantaneous to compute. This model advances our understanding beyond current molecular simulations and experiments. Water has long been regarded as a "2-density liquid": a dense LJ liquid and a looser HB one. Instead, we find here a different antagonism underlying water structure-property relations: HBs in water-water pairs drive density, while HBs in cooperative cages drive openness. The balance shifts strongly with temperature and pressure. This model interprets the molecular structures underlying the liquid-liquid phase transition in supercooled water. It may have value in geophysics, biomolecular modeling, and engineering of materials for water purification and green chemistry.

Entropy-driven liquid-liquid separation in supercooled water.

Project description:Twenty years ago Poole et al. suggested that the anomalous properties of supercooled water may be caused by a critical point that terminates a line of liquid-liquid separation of lower-density and higher-density water. Here we present a thermodynamic model based on this hypothesis, which describes all available experimental data for supercooled water with better quality and fewer adjustable parameters than any other model. Liquid water at low temperatures is viewed as an 'athermal solution' of two molecular structures with different entropies and densities. Alternatively to popular models for water, in which liquid-liquid separation is driven by energy, the phase separation in the athermal two-state water is driven by entropy upon increasing the pressure, while the critical temperature is defined by the 'reaction' equilibrium constant. The model predicts the location of density maxima at the locus of a near-constant fraction of the lower-density structure.

Electron affinity of liquid water.

Project description:Understanding redox and photochemical reactions in aqueous environments requires a precise knowledge of the ionization potential and electron affinity of liquid water. The former has been measured, but not the latter. We predict the electron affinity of liquid water and of its surface from first principles, coupling path-integral molecular dynamics with ab initio potentials, and many-body perturbation theory. Our results for the surface (0.8?eV) agree well with recent pump-probe spectroscopy measurements on amorphous ice. Those for the bulk (0.1-0.3?eV) differ from several estimates adopted in the literature, which we critically revisit. We show that the ionization potential of the bulk and surface are almost identical; instead their electron affinities differ substantially, with the conduction band edge of the surface much deeper in energy than that of the bulk. We also discuss the significant impact of nuclear quantum effects on the fundamental gap and band edges of the liquid.

Simple Model of Liquid Water Dynamics.

Project description:We develop an analytical statistical-mechanical model to study the dynamic properties of liquid water. In this two-dimensional model, neighboring waters can interact through a hydrogen bond, a van der Waals contact, or an ice-like cage structure or have no interaction. We calculate the diffusion coefficient, viscosity, and thermal conductivity versus temperature and pressure. The trends follow those seen in the water experiments. The model explains that in warm water, heating drives faster diffusion but less interaction, so the viscosity and conductivity decrease. Cooling cold water causes poorer energy exchange because water's ice-like cages are big and immobile and collide infrequently. The main antagonism in water dynamics is not between vdW and H bonds, but it is an interplay between both those pair interactions, multibody cages, and no interaction. The value of this simple model is that it is analytical, so calculations are immediate, and it gives interpretations based on molecular physics.

Magnetic nanoparticles assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of chloramphenicol in water samples.

Project description:This work describes the development of a new methodology based on magnetic nanoparticles assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME-MNPs) for preconcentration and extraction of chloramphenicol (CAP) antibiotic residues in water. The approach is based on the use of decanoic acid as the extraction solvent followed by the application of MNPs to magnetically retrieve the extraction solvent containing the extracted CAP. The coated MNPs were then desorbed with methanol, and the clean extract was analysed using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. Several important parameters, such as the amount of decanoic acid, extraction time, stirring rate, amount of MNPs, type of desorption solvent, salt addition and sample pH, were evaluated and optimized. Optimum parameters were as follows: amount of decanoic acid: 200 mg; extraction time: 10 min; stirring rate: 800 rpm; amount of MNPs: 60 mg; desorption solvent: methanol; salt: 10%; and sample pH, 8. Under the optimum conditions, the method demonstrated acceptable linearity (R 2 = 0.9933) over a concentration range of 50-1000 µg l-1. Limit of detection and limit of quantification were 16.5 and 50.0 µg l-1, respectively. Good analyte recovery (91-92.7%) and acceptable precision with good relative standard deviations (0.45-6.29%, n = 3) were obtained. The method was successfully applied to tap water and lake water samples. The proposed method is rapid, simple, reliable and environmentally friendly for the detection of CAP.

The anomalies and criticality of liquid water.

Project description:The origin of water's anomalies has been a matter of long-standing debate. A two-state model, dating back to Röntgen, relies on the dynamical coexistence of two types of local structures-locally favored tetrahedral structure (LFTS) and disordered normal-liquid structure (DNLS)-in liquid water. Phenomenologically, this model not only explains water's thermodynamic anomalies but also can rationalize the existence of a liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP) if there is a cooperative formation of LFTS. We recently found direct evidence for the coexistence of LFTS and DNLS in the experimental structure factor of liquid water. However, the existence of the LLCP and its impact on water's properties has remained elusive, leaving the origin of water's anomalies unclear. Here we propose a unique strategy to locate the LLCP of liquid water. First, we make a comprehensive analysis of a large set of experimental structural, thermodynamic, and dynamic data based on our hierarchical two-state model. This model predicts that the two thermodynamic and dynamical fluctuation maxima lines should cross at the LLCP if it exists, which we confirm by hundred-microsecond simulations for model waters. Based on recent experimental results of the compressibility and diffusivity measurements in the no man's land, we reveal that the two lines cross around 184 K and 173 MPa for real water, suggesting the presence of the LLCP around there. Nevertheless, we find that the criticality is almost negligible in the experimentally accessible region of liquid water because it is too far from the LLCP. Our findings would provide a clue to settle the long-standing debate.

Electrofreezing of liquid water at ambient conditions.

Project description:Water is routinely exposed to external electric fields. Whether, for example, at physiological conditions, in contact with biological systems, or at the interface of polar surfaces in countless technological settings, water responds to fields on the order of a few V Å-1 in a manner that is under intense investigation. Dating back to the 19th century, the possibility of solidifying water upon applying electric fields - a process known as electrofreezing - is an alluring promise that has canalized major efforts since, with uncertain outcomes. Here, we perform long (up to 500 ps per field strength) ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of water at ambient conditions under external electric fields. We show that fields of 0.10 - 0.15 V Å-1 induce electrofreezing to a ferroelectric amorphous phase which we term f-GW (ferroelectric glassy water). The transition occurs after ~ 150 ps for a field of 0.15 V Å-1 and after ~ 200 ps for a field of 0.10 V Å-1 and is signaled by a structural and dynamic arrest and the suppression of the fluctuations of the hydrogen bond network. Our work reports evidence of electrofreezing of bulk liquid water at ambient conditions and therefore impacts several fields, from fundamental chemical physics to biology and catalysis.

Water Flux Induced Reorientation of Liquid Crystals.

Project description:It is well understood that the adsorption of solutes at the interface between a bulk liquid crystal phase and an aqueous phase can lead to orientational or anchoring transitions. A different principle is introduced here, whereby a transient reorientation of a thermotropic liquid crystal is triggered by a spontaneous flux of water across the interface. A critical water flux can be generated by the addition of an electrolyte to the bulk aqueous phase, leading to a change in the solvent activity; water is then transported through the liquid crystal phase and across the interface. The magnitude of the spontaneous water flux can be controlled by the concentration and type of solutes, as well as the rate of salt addition. These results present new, previously unappreciated fundamental principles that could potentially be used for the design of materials involving transient gating mechanisms, including biological sensors, drug delivery systems, separation media, and molecular machines.

Interplay of the glass transition and the liquid-liquid phase transition in water.

Project description:Water has multiple glassy states, often called amorphous ices. Low-density (LDA) and high-density (HDA) amorphous ice are separated by a dramatic, first-order like phase transition. It has been argued that the LDA-HDA transformation connects to a first-order liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) above the glass transition temperature T(g). Direct experimental evidence of the LLPT is challenging to obtain, since the LLPT occurs at conditions where water rapidly crystallizes. In this work, we explore the implications of a LLPT on the pressure dependence of T(g)(P) for LDA and HDA by performing computer simulations of two water models - one with a LLPT, and one without. In the absence of a LLPT, T(g)(P) for all glasses nearly coincide. When there is a LLPT, different glasses exhibit dramatically different T(g)(P) which are directly linked with the LLPT. Available experimental data for T(g)(P) are only consistent with the scenario including a LLPT.

Mechanisms for destabilisation of RNA viruses at air-water and liquid-liquid interfaces.

Project description:Understanding the interactions between viruses and surfaces or interfaces is important, as they provide the principles underpinning the cleaning and disinfection of contaminated surfaces. Yet, the physics of such interactions is currently poorly understood. For instance, there are longstanding experimental observations suggesting that the presence of air-water interfaces can generically inactivate and kill viruses, yet the mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unknown. Here we use theory and simulations to show that electrostatics may provide one such mechanism, and that this is very general. Thus, we predict that the electrostatic free energy of an RNA virus should increase by several thousands of kBT as the virion breaches an air-water interface. We also show that the fate of a virus approaching a generic liquid-liquid interface depends strongly on the detailed balance between interfacial and electrostatic forces, which can be tuned, for instance, by choosing different media to contact a virus-laden respiratory droplet. Tunability arises because both the electrostatic and interfacial forces scale similarly with viral size. We propose that these results can be used to design effective strategies for surface disinfection.

Nanoscale dynamics of phase flipping in water near its hypothesized liquid-liquid critical point.

Project description:One hypothesized explanation for water's anomalies imagines the existence of a liquid-liquid (LL) phase transition line separating two liquid phases and terminating at a LL critical point. We simulate the classic ST2 model of water for times up to 1000 ns and system size up to N = 729. We find that for state points near the LL transition line, the entire system flips rapidly between liquid states of high and low density. Our finite-size scaling analysis accurately locates both the LL transition line and its associated LL critical point. We test the stability of the two liquids with respect to the crystal and find that of the 350 systems simulated, only 3 of them crystallize and these 3 for the relatively small system size N = 343 while for all other simulations the incipient crystallites vanish on a time scales smaller than ≈ 100 ns.
