Data of dynamic microscale strain distributions of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in dwell fatigue tests.

ABSTRACT: Dynamic microscale strain distributions with temporal resolution of 1 s in a smooth and a cracked Ti-6Al-4V alloys during one-cycle dwell fatigue tests are illustrated in videos (URL: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1pit_VV2apGOpETVfaJAAtL5Xl2CNOiJ3?usp=sharing). The tensile strain distributions were measured by the video sampling moiré method from the 1-μm-pitch grid images in a scanning electron microscope. The strain concentration factors of the smooth and the cracked specimens are 1.96 and 2.65, respectively. The plastic strain increment is 0.0007 during the displacement holding time of 591s in the smoothed specimen at maximum stress of 900 MPa., and 0.0008 during the displacement holding time of 593s in the cracked specimen at maximum stress of 870 MPa. The typical strain results are analyzed in 1-s-resolved strain mapping in Ti-6Al-4V alloys during dwell fatigue in SEM by video sampling moiré [1].

Notch Corrosion Fatigue Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V.

Project description:The aim of this paper is to map the corrosion fatigue characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V alloy through the evaluation of the corrosion fatigue initiation and failure mechanisms. The study included the effect of the stress concentration factor at very high Kt values and the role of different inert or corrosive environments. This alloy is widely used in naval-structures and aero-engine communities and the outcomes of the work will have direct relevance to industrial service operations. Axial fatigue tests (R = 0.1; 2 × 10⁵ cycles; f = 10 Hz) were carried out on smooth and high notched (Ktmax = 18.65) flat specimens in laboratory air, paraffin oil, laboratory air + beeswax coating, recirculated 3.5% NaCl solution. The step loading procedure was used to perform the fatigue tests and the surface replica method and crack propagation gages were used to check crack nucleation and propagation until failure. Log-Log plots of σmaxvs.Kt showed a bilinear behavior and enabled the demonstration of the presence of a threshold stress intensity factor (Kt = 8-9), after which the environment has no effect on the fatigue damage for all the tested environments.

Cyclic deformation and fatigue data for Ti-6Al-4V ELI under variable amplitude loading.

Project description:This article presents the strain-based experimental data for Ti-6Al-4V ELI under non-constant amplitude cyclic loading. Uniaxial strain-controlled fatigue experiments were conducted under three different loading conditions, including two-level block loading (i.e. high-low and low-high), periodic overload, and variable amplitude loading. Tests were performed under fully-reversed, and mean strain/stress conditions. For each test conducted, two sets of data were collected; the cyclic stress-strain response (i.e. hysteresis loops) in log10 increments, and the peak and valley values of stress and strain for each cycle. Residual fatigue lives are reported for tests with two-level block loading, while for periodic overload and variable amplitude experiments, fatigue lives are reported in terms of number of blocks to failure.

Strain-based fatigue data for Ti-6Al-4V ELI under fully-reversed and mean strain loads.

Project description:This article presents the experimental data supporting the study to obtain the mean strain/stress effects on the fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V ELI. A series of strain-controlled fatigue experiments on Ti-6Al-4V ELI were performed at four strain ratios (-1, -0.5, 0, and 0.5). Two types of data are included for each specimen. These are the hysteresis stress-strain responses for the cycle in a log10 increment, and the maximum and minimum stress-strain responses for each cycle. Fatigue lives are also reported for all the experiments.

Improved Strength-Ductility of Ti-6Al-4V Casting Alloys with Trace Addition of TiC-TiB<sub>2</sub> Nanoparticles.

Project description:In this work, a high strength-ductility Ti64 cast alloy, containing trace TiC-TiB2 nanoparticles, was fabricated by adding dual-phased nano-TiC-TiB2/Al master alloys to the molten Ti64 alloys. The trace addition of the TiC-TiB2 nanoparticles (0.1 wt%) simultaneously reduced the size of the β grains, the α laths, and the α colony size of the lamellar structure during casting and suppressed the coarsening of the α laths during heat treatment. The yield strength and the uniform elongation of TiC-TiB2/Ti64 were increased by ~130 MPa and 2%, respectively. The simultaneously improved strength and ductility of the TiC-TiB2/Ti64 were attributed to the decrease in the α colony size of the lamellar structure, the significant refinement of the grains and α laths, and the pinning effect of nanoparticles.

Project description:Data is presented describing the strain-controlled, fully-reversed uniaxial cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V specimens additively manufactured via Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) - a Direct Laser Deposition (DLD) process. The data was collected by performing multiple fatigue tests on specimens with various microstructural states/conditions, i.e. in their 'as-built', annealed (below the beta transus temperature), or heat treated (above the beta transus temperature) condition. Such data aids in characterizing the mechanical integrity and fatigue resistance of DLD parts. Data presented herein also allows for elucidating the strong microstructure coupling of the fatigue behavior of DLD Ti-6Al-4V, as the data trends were found to vary with material condition (i.e. as-built, annealed or heat treated) [1]. This data is of interest to the additive manufacturing and fatigue scientific communities, as well as the aerospace and biomedical industries, since additively-manufactured parts cannot be reliably deployed for public use, until their mechanical properties are understood with high certainty.

Wire-Based Additive Manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V Using Electron Beam Technique.

Project description:Electron beam freeform fabrication is a wire feed direct energy deposition additive manufacturing process, where the vacuum condition ensures excellent shielding against the atmosphere and enables processing of highly reactive materials. In this work, this technique is applied for the α + β-titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V to determine suitable process parameter for robust building. The correlation between dimensions and the dilution of single beads based on selected process parameters, leads to an overlapping distance in the range of 70%-75% of the bead width, resulting in a multi-bead layer with a uniform height and with a linear build-up rate. Moreover, the stacking of layers with different numbers of tracks using an alternating symmetric welding sequence allows the manufacturing of simple structures like walls and blocks. Microscopy investigations reveal that the primary structure consists of epitaxial grown columnar prior β-grains, with some randomly scattered macro and micropores. The developed microstructure consists of a mixture of martensitic and finer α-lamellar structure with a moderate and uniform hardness of 334 HV, an ultimate tensile strength of 953 MPa and rather low fracture elongation of 4.5%. A subsequent stress relief heat treatment leads to a uniform hardness distribution and an extended fracture elongation of 9.5%, with a decrease of the ultimate strength to 881 MPa due to the fine α-lamellar structure produced during the heat treatment. Residual stresses measured by energy dispersive X-ray diffraction shows after deposition 200-450 MPa in tension in the longitudinal direction, while the stresses reach almost zero when the stress relief treatment is carried out.

Understanding the effects of PBF process parameter interplay on Ti-6Al-4V surface properties.

Project description:Ti-6Al-4V is commonly used in orthopaedic implants, and fabrication techniques such as Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) are becoming increasingly popular for the net-shape production of such implants, as PBF allows for complex customisation and minimal material wastage. Present research into PBF fabricated Ti-6Al-4V focuses on new design strategies (e.g. designing pores, struts or lattices) or mechanical property optimisation through process parameter control-however, it is pertinent to examine the effects of altering PBF process parameters on properties relating to bioactivity. Herein, changes in Ti-6Al-4V microstructure, mechanical properties and surface characteristics were examined as a result of varying PBF process parameters, with a view to understanding how to tune Ti-6Al-4V bio-activity during the fabrication stage itself. The interplay between various PBF laser scan speeds and laser powers influenced Ti-6Al-4V hardness, porosity, roughness and corrosion resistance, in a manner not clearly described by the commonly used volumetric energy density (VED) design variable. Key findings indicate that the relationships between PBF process parameters and ultimate Ti-6Al-4V properties are not straightforward as expected, and that wide ranges of porosity (0.03 ± 0.01% to 32.59 ± 2.72%) and corrosion resistance can be achieved through relatively minor changes in process parameters used-indicating volumetric energy density is a poor predictor of PBF Ti-6Al-4V properties. While variations in electrochemical behaviour with respect to the process parameters used in the PBF fabrication of Ti-6Al-4V have previously been reported, this study presents data regarding important surface characteristics over a large process window, reflecting the full capabilities of current PBF machinery.

Project description:A technique has been developed for fabrication of ultrahydrophobic Ti-6Al-4V surface by vacuum process. This report has the data related to the article "Hybrid laser and vacuum process for rapid ultrahydrophobic Ti-6Al-4 V surface formation" on the fabrication of ultrahydrophobic Ti-6Al-4V by Vacuum process (Jagdheesh et al., 2019). The present data consist of X-ray photo electron spectroscopy spectrums recorded for the laser patterned ultrahydrophobic samples, droplet image and surface chemical composition of laser patterned Ti-6Al-4V samples before vacuum process(b. v. p.) and after vacuum process (a. v. p.) for 120 min. The presented data give a clear idea about the chemical modification evolved during the vacuum process.

Gas Metal Arc Welding Modes in Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V.

Project description:In wire arc additive manufacturing of Ti-alloy parts (Ti-WAAM) gas metal arc welding (GMAW) can be applied for complex parts printing. However, due to the specific properties of Ti, GMAW of Ti-alloys is complicated. In this work, three different types of metal transfer modes during Ti-WAAM were investigated: Cold Metal Transfer, controlled short circuiting metal transfer, and self-regulated metal transfer at a direct current with a negative electrode. Metal transfer modes were studied using captured waveform and high-speed video analysis. Using these modes, three walls were manufactured; the geometry preservation stability was estimated and compared using effective wall width calculation, the microstructure was analyzed using optical microscopy. Transfer process data showed that arc wandering depends not only on cathode spot instabilities, but also on anode processing properties. Microstructure analysis showed that each produced wall consists of phases and structures inherent for Ti-WAAM. α-basketweave in the center of and α-colony on the grain boundary of epitaxially grown β-grains were found with heat affected zone bands along the height of the walls, so that the microstructure did not depend on metal transfer dramatically. However, the geometry preservation stability was higher in the wall, produced with controlled short circuiting metal transfer.

On the Degree of Plastic Strain during Laser Shock Peening of Ti-6Al-4V.

Project description:Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative technique that is used to enhance the fatigue strength of structural materials via the generation of significant residual stress. The present work was undertaken to evaluate the degree of plastic strain introduced during LSP and thus improve the fundamental understanding of the LSP process. To this end, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and nano-hardness measurements were performed to examine the microstructural response of laser-shock-peened Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Only minor changes in both the shape of α grains/particles and hardness were found. Accordingly, it was concluded that the laser-shock-peened material only experienced a small plastic strain. This surprising result was attributed to a relatively high rate of strain hardening of Ti-6Al-4V during LSP.
