New records of Ticapimpla Gauld, 1991 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Pimplinae) from Brazil and French Guiana, with taxonomic notes.

ABSTRACT:

Background

We report the genus Ticapimpla Gauld, 1991 from French Guiana and the species Ticapimpla amazonica Palacio et al., T. carinata Palacio et al., T. matamatae Palacio et al. and T. soinii Palacio et al. from Brazilian Amazonia. The new discoveries suggest that the genus is widely distributed in Amazonian lowland rain forests. In addition, we diagnose and illustrate the males of T. carinata and T. matamatae for the first time. Short diagnoses and layer-photos for all the Amazonian species are provided.

New information

The genus Ticapimpla is reported for the first time from French Guiana and the species T. amazonica, T. carinata, T. matamatae and T. soinii from Brazilian Amazonia. In addition, the males of T. carinata and T. matamatae are diagnosed and illustrated for the first time.

It was discovered from the biological station of Yanayacu located in the north-eastern slopes of the tropical Andes. New records of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) for the Italian fauna.

Project description:New distributional records on 55 ichneumonids (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) from Italy are provided. Of these, 47 species are new for Italy, including representatives of the subfamily Diacritinae and of the tribes Zimmeriini (Ichneumoninae) and Pseudorhyssini (Poemeniinae); six species are new for Sardinia, one for Sicily and one for the Italian mainland. The hitherto unknown female of Baranisobashibericus Heinrich, 1972 (Ichneumoninae) is described.

A new Chlerogelloides from northeastern Brazil and French Guiana, with a key to the species (Hymenoptera, Halictidae).

Project description:A third species of the rare augochlorine bee genus Chlerogelloides Engel et al. (Halictinae, Augochlorini) is described and figured. Chlerogelloides nexosasp. n. is most similar to the type species, Chlerogelloides femoralis Engel et al., in that both have modified midlegs in the males. The former, however, can be distinguished on the basis of its terminalia, which in some respects more closely resembles those of Chlerogelloides simplex Engel and Brooks. Brief comments on the secondary features of males and relationships of the genus are provided. A key to the species of the genus is provided and floral records of Cordia nodosa Lam. (Boraginaceae) and Gonzalagunia dicocca Cham. & Schltdl. (Rubiaceae) are noted.

The changing use of the ovipositor in host shifts by ichneumonid ectoparasitoids of spiders (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Pimplinae).

Project description:Accurate egg placement into or onto a living host is an essential ability for many parasitoids, and changes in associated phenotypes, such as ovipositor morphology and behaviour, correlate with significant host shifts. Here, we report that in the ichneumonid group of koinobiont spider-ectoparasitoids ("polysphinctines"), several putatively ancestral taxa (clade I here), parasitic on ground-dwelling RTA-spiders (a group characterised by retrolateral tibial apophysis on male palpal tibiae), lay their eggs in a specific way. They tightly bend their metasoma above the spider's cephalothorax, touching the carapace with the dorsal side of the ovipositor apically ("dorsal-press"). The egg slips out from the middle part of the ventral side of the ovipositor and moves towards its apex with the parted lower valves acting as rails. Deposition occurs as the parasitoid draws the ovipositor backwards from under the egg. Oviposition upon the tough carapace of the cephalothorax, presumably less palatable than the abdomen, is conserved in these taxa, and presumed adaptive through avoiding physical damage to the developing parasitoid. This specific way of oviposition is reversed in the putatively derived clade of polysphinctines (clade II here) parasitic on Araneoidea spiders with aerial webs, which is already known. They bend their metasoma along the spider's abdomen, grasping the abdomen with their fore/mid legs, pressing the ventral tip of the metasoma and the lower valves of the ovipositor against the abdomen ("ventral-press"). The egg is expelled through an expansion of the lower valves, which is developed only in this clade and evident in most species, onto the softer and presumably more nutritious abdomen.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Scambus vesicarius Ratzeburg (Hymenoptera: ichneumonidae: pimplinae).

Project description:The genomic-level characteristics play a pivotal role as genetic assets for the identification of species and phylogenetic analysis. Here, we sequenced and analyzed the mitochondrial genome of Scambus vesicarius (Ratzeburg), which was first morphologically described in "Die Ichneumonen der Forstinsecten in forstlicher und entomologischer Beziehung." The motivation for this research arises from the necessity to comprehend the genetic composition and evolutionary history of S. vesicarius, a genus of parasitic wasps with potential agricultural significance, which. The circular genome is 26,103bp in length with an overall base composition of 42.02% for A, 43.71% for T, 8.64% for C, and 5.63% for G. The mitochondrial genome of S. vesicarius contained 13 protein-coding genes that initiated by the ATN codon, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and a control region (CR). Phylogenetic analyses using Maximum-likelihood methods supported that S. vesicarius is closely related to Pimpla luctuosa, both of which belong to the subfamily Pimplinae, forming a clade that is sister to other subfamilies of Ichneumonidae. This study provides value not only into the genetic diversity and evolutionary history of S. vesicarius at the mitochondrial level but basic research on parasitic wasp biology and applied efforts in biological control.
