Crystal structure and chemistry of tricadmium digermanium tetra-arsenide, Cd₃Ge₂As₄.

ABSTRACT: A cadmium germanium arsenide compound, Cd₃Ge₂As₄, was synthesized using a double-containment fused quartz ampoule method within a rocking furnace and a melt-quench technique. The crystal structure was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopies (i.e. SEM, STEM, and TEM), and selected area diffraction (SAD) and confirmed with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The chemistry was verified with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).

Ge0.57Ti0.43O2: a new high-pressure material with rutile-type crystal structure.

Project description:Single crystals of a GeO2-TiO2 solid solution with the corresponding composition Ge0.57Ti0.43O2 (germanium titanium tetra-oxide) were obtained by devitrification of germania-titania glass at high pressure and temperature. The new compound crystallizes in the rutile structure type (space group P42/mnm), where Ge and Ti share the same position M (site symmetry m.mm), with occupancy values of 0.57?(3) and 0.43?(3), respectively, and one O-atom position (m.2m). The M site is in a sixfold O-atom coordination and, as in the original TiO2 rutile structure, an elongation of the O-M-O bonds along the c-axis direction of the coordination polyhedron and deviation of the angles from 90° lead to a decrease in the coordination symmetry from octa-hedral to tetra-gonal. The Ge and Ti atoms are fully disordered in the structure, which indicates that the rutile structure is surprisingly pliant given the differing sizes of the two cations.

Project description:There are three independent Cd(II) ions in the title complex, {[Cd(3)(C(10)H(3)O(8))(2)(H(2)O)(4)]·4H(2)O}(n), one of which is coordinated by four O atoms from three 5-carboxybenzene-1,2,4-tri-carboxyl-ate ligands and by two water mol-ecules in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The second Cd(II) ion is coordinated by five O atoms from four 5-carboxybenzene-1,2,4-tri-carboxyl-ate ligands and by one water mol-ecule also in a distorted octa-hedral geometry while the third Cd(II) ion is coordinated by five O atoms from three 5-carboxybenzene-1,2,4-tri-carboxyl-ate ligands and by one water mol-ecule in a highly distorted octa-hedral geometry. The 5-carboxybenzene-1,2,4-tri-carboxyl-ate ligands bridge the Cd(II) ions, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional structure. Intra- and inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds are present throughout the three-dimensional structure.

Synthesis and Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction Structure of an Indium Arsenide Nanocluster.

Project description:The discovery of magic-sized clusters as intermediates in the synthesis of colloidal quantum dots has allowed for insight into formation pathways and provided atomically precise molecular platforms for studying the structure and surface chemistry of those materials. The synthesis of monodisperse InAs quantum dots has been developed through the use of indium carboxylate and As(SiMe3)3 as precursors and documented to proceed through the formation of magic-sized intermediates. Herein, we report the synthesis, isolation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure of an InAs nanocluster that is ubiquitous across reports of InAs quantum dot synthesis. The structure, In26As18(O2CR)24(PR'3)3, differs substantially from previously reported semiconductor nanocluster structures even within the III-V family. However, it can be structurally linked to III-V and II-VI cluster structures through the anion sublattice. Further analysis using variable temperature absorbance spectroscopy and support from computation deepen our understanding of the reported structure and InAs nanomaterials as a whole.

Crystal Chemistry and Physics of UCd11.

Project description:In the phase diagram U-Cd, only one compound has been identified so far─UCd11 (space group Pm3̅m). Since the discovery of this material, the physical properties of UCd11 have attracted a considerable amount of attention. In particular, its complex magnetic phase diagram─as a result of tuning with magnetic field or pressure─is not well-understood. From a chemical perspective, a range of lattice parameter values have been reported, suggesting a possibility of a considerable homogeneity range, i.e., UCd11-x. In this work, we perform a simultaneous study of crystallographic features coupled with measurements of physical properties. This work sheds light on the delicate relationship between the intrinsic crystal chemistry and magnetic properties of UCd11.

Redetermination of the crystal structure of tetra-lithium octa-fluorido-zirconate(IV), Li4ZrF8, from single-crystal X-ray data.

Project description:Presented herein is the crystal-structure redetermination of Li4ZrF8 from single-crystal X-ray data. Alkali zirconium fluorides are important in nuclear-relevant technologies, and zirconium is commonly employed as an analogue for tetra-valent f-block elements. The previous structure report of this species is based on powder X-ray data [Dugat et al. (1995 ?). J. Solid State Chem. 120, 187-196] but there has never been a refined structure model from single-crystal data. The octa-fluorido-zirconate moieties are held together by electrostatic attraction to lithium ions without sharing of fluoride sites between zirconium(IV) ions.

Dibarium tricadmium bis-muthide(-I,-III) oxide, Ba(2)Cd(3-?)Bi(3)O.

Project description:Ba(2)Cd(2.13)Bi(3)O, a new bis-muthide(-I,-III) oxide, crystallizes with a novel body-centered tetra-gonal structure (Pearson code tI36). The crystal structure contains eight crystallographically unique sites in the asymmetric unit, all on special positions. Two Ba, one Cd and two Bi atoms have site symmetry 4mm, the third Bi atom has mmm. and the O atom has m2 symmetry; the second Cd site (2mm. symmetry) is not fully occupied. The layered structure is complex and can be considered as an inter-growth of two types of slabs, viz. BaCdBiO with the ZrCuSiAs type and BaCd(2)Bi(2) with the CeMg(2)Si(2) type.

The Reduced Nitridogermanates(III) Ca6 [Ge2 N6 ] and Sr6 [Ge2 N6 ] with Ge-Ge Bonds.

Project description:The first nitridogermanates(III) Ca6 [Ge2 N6 ] and Sr6 [Ge2 N6 ] were synthesized from sodium flux and structurally characterized by powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, respectively. They crystallize isostructurally to each other and homeotypic to Ca6 [Cr2 N6 ]H in space group R 3‾ . They feature unprecedented, mutually isolated, ethane-like [GeIII 2 N6 ]12- anions in a staggered conformation. The compounds are semiconductors according to resistivity measurements and electronic structure calculations, yielding band gaps of 1.1 eV for Ca6 [Ge2 N6 ] and 0.2 eV for Sr6 [Ge2 N6 ].

Crystal structure of 2,2,3,3-tetra-methyl-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexa-phenyl-tetra-germane.

Project description:The mol-ecule of the title compound, C40H42Ge4, lies with its central Ge-Ge bond on an inversion centre giving rise to a zigzag backbone of four tetra-hedrally coordinated Ge atoms. The symmetrically independent Ge-Ge bonds are slightly shorter than in other organo-tetra-germanes whereas the Ge-CPh (Ph = phen-yl) and Ge-CMe (Me = meth-yl) distances have their usual values. In the crystal, (010) layers of Ph6Me4Ge4 mol-ecules with a parallel orientation of the Ge4 backbone exist, held together by van der Waals forces only. Main bond lengths in organo-substituted oligogermanes are compared.

Crystal structure of tetra-methyl-ammonium 1,1,7,7-tetra-cyano-hepta-2,4,6-trienide.

Project description:The title compound, C4H12N+·C11H5N4 -, contains one tetra-methyl-ammonium cation and one 1,1,7,7-tetra-cyano-hepta-2,4,6-trienide anion in the asymmetric unit. The anion is in an all-trans conjugated C=C bonds conformation. Two terminal C(CN)2 di-nitrile moieties are slightly twisted from the polymethine main chain to which they are attached [C(CN)2/C5 dihedral angles = 6.1?(2) and 7.1?(1)°]. The C-C bond distances along the hepta-dienyl chain vary in the narrow range 1.382?(2)-1.394?(2)?Å, thus indicating the significant degree of conjugation. In the crystal, the anions are linked into zigzag chains along the [10] direction by C-H?N(nitrile) short contacts. The anti-parallel chains stack along the [110] direction with alternating separations between the neighboring anions in stacks of 3.291 and 3.504?Å. The C-H?N short contacts and stacking inter-actions combine to link the anions into layers parallel to the (01) plane and separated by columns of tetra-methyl-ammonium cations.
