Gentianella macrosperma, a new species of Gentianella (Gentianaceae) from Xinjiang, China.

ABSTRACT: Gentianella macrosperma Ma ex H.F. Cao, J.D. Ya & Q.R. Zhang, a new species of Gentianaceae from Xinjiang, Northwest China is described and illustrated. This new species is unique in having equal length of corolla lobe and corolla tube, nectaries located at the throat of the corolla tube and large seeds up to 1.6 mm in diameter. In addition, an updated identification key to the Chinese species of Gentianella is provided.

Development of SSR markers by 454 sequencing in the endemic species Gentianella praecox subsp. bohemica (Gentianaceae).

Project description:Polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed and used to genotype individuals of Gentianella praecox subsp. bohemica (Gentianaceae), a highly protected taxon in Europe, to study the genetic structure of the remaining populations. Thirty-eight primer pairs were successfully amplified; of these, 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed using a 454 sequencing approach and used to genotype 180 individuals of G. praecox subsp. bohemica from six populations. Allelic richness ranged between one and nine alleles per locus. We detected a high frequency of polyploid individuals (77.8%). The highest average percentage of heterozygous genotypes was identified for samples from the Hroby population (75.5%). All loci can also be amplified in the congeneric species G. praecox subsp. praecox, G. amarella subsp. amarella, and G. obtusifolia subsp. sturmiana. These markers will provide knowledge on patterns of gene flow and population genetic structure, which is necessary for current protection actions and for effective conservation of this species in the future.

Gentianamopanshanensis (Gentianaceae), a new species from Yunnan, southwest China.

Project description:Gentianamopanshanensis, a new species of the family Gentianaceae is here described and illustrated. This species is presently known only from the Mopanshan Mountain, Yunnan Province, southwest China. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequence data has shown that this new species is a member of the series Fimbriatae of the section Chondrophyllae. Morphologically, it mostly resembles G.mairei and G.panthaica, but differs clearly from the latter two species in the shape and size of the leaves, and the characters of the corolla throat and plicae.

Swertia hongquanii, a new species of Gentianaceae from Mt. Wuling, southern China.

Project description:Swertia hongquanii Jia X. Li, a new species of Gentianaceae, is described and illustrated from Mt. Wuling, southern China. It grows on the tops of steep limestone mountains surrounded by cliffs above an altitude of ca. 1400 m. This species resembles Swertia bimaculata, but differs from the latter by the stem leaf blades 2.0-4.5 × 1.0-2.5 cm, ovate to ovate-cordate, base cordate and subamplexicaul, the seeds irregularly polyhedral and the seed coats minutely thorny and reticulate. Based on morphological traits, i.e. the inflorescence structure and the number and structure of the nectaries, the new species may be a member of series Maculatae. A key to the species of series of section MaculataeOphelia is provided.

Onosma fuyunensis (Boraginaceae), a new species from Xinjiang, China.

Project description:Onosma fuyunensis, a new species of Boraginaceae from northern Xinjiang, China, is described and illustrated here. Onosma fuyunensis is similar to O. simplicissima and O. gmelinii; it differs in having a particularly bristly indumentum, unbranched stems, white and yellow corollas, anthers united only at base, and nutlets with a stipitate cicatrix. An updated key to the species of Onosma from Xinjiang and Altai Mountains is also provided.

Artemisiaqingheensis (Asteraceae, Anthemideae), a new species from Xinjiang, China.

Project description:Artemisiaqingheensis (Asteraceae, Anthemideae), a new species from Qinghe County, Xinjiang, China, is described and illustrated. We investigated its phylogenetic position and relationships with 35 other species of Artemisia using whole chloroplast DNA sequence data. The molecular phylogenetic results and morphological evidence (multi-layered involucral bracts and homogamous capitula with bisexual flowers) showed that the new species belongs to ArtemisiasubgenusSeriphidium. A diagnostic table and discussion of morphological characters are provided to distinguish the new species from A.amoena, A.gracilescens, A.lessingiana and A.terrae-albae.

A new species and new records species of Pluteus from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China.

Project description:Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China embraces a unique geographical and ecological environment, and the macrofungi represent a rich resource. However, few studies on the genus Pluteus have been reported from Xinjiang. In 2021, the macrofungal resources in Xinjiang were surveyed, and 10 specimens belonging to the genus Pluteus were collected. Based on the morphological study and molecular analysis, three species were recognized, P. aletaiensis, P. brunneidiscus, and P. hongoi. Pluteus aletaiensis is proposed as a new species. It is characterized by its bright yellow lamellae and stipe, brittle texture, subfusiform to vesicular pleurocystidia, with short pedicels to broadly lageniform to obtuse at apices, a hymeniderm pileipellis, containing dark brown intracellular pigment, and it grows on the ground. Pluteus brunneidiscus, a new record to China, is characterized by uneven, smooth, grayish brown to brown pileus, with an entire margin, and pointed or flatter apices intermediate cystidia, without apical hooks. Pluteus hongoi, a new record to Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, is characterized by the apical hook's structure (commonly bifid) of pleurocystidia. The nuclear internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-a) region were used for the molecular analysis. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using both the maximum likelihood analysis (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI). Detailed descriptions of the three species are presented herein. Finally, a key to the list of eight species of the genus Pluteus knew from Xinjiang is provided.

Clematismae (Ranunculaceae), a new species of C.sect.Meclatis from Xinjiang, China.

Project description:Clematismae Z.Z.Yang & L.Xie, a new species of Ranunculaceae from Xinjiang, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to C.orientalis and C.glauca but can be distinguished for being a less hairy plant (hairy in C.orientalis), often 2-ternate leaves (1-2-pinnate for C.orientalis and C.glauca), lanceolate to linear-lanceolate leaflets (elliptic or ovate in C.glauca), larger flowers (smaller flower in C.orientalis) and narrowly lanceolate sepals with acute to slightly attenuate apex (narrowly oblong sepals in C.orientalis and ovate to broadly lanceolate sepals in C.glauca). The new species is endemic to the southern slope of North Tianshan Mountain in Central Xinjiang. The conservation status of the species is also discussed.

All eriophyoid mites described here are vagrants on the undersurface of leaves and any apparent damage was not observed.

Project description:Nine new Pireneitega species collected from Xinjiang, China are described as new to science: Pireneitega burqinensis sp. n. (♂♀), Pireneitega fuyunensis sp. n. (♂♀), Pireneitega gongliuensis sp. n. (♂♀), Pireneitega huochengensis sp. n. (♂♀), Pireneitega lini sp. n. (♀), Pireneitega liui sp. n. (♂♀), Pireneitega wensuensis sp. n. (♂), Pireneitega wui sp. n. (♂) and Pireneitega yaoi sp. n. (♀). DNA barcodes were obtained for all these species for future use.

A new Gammarus species from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (China) with a key to Xinjiang freshwater gammarids (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Gammaridae).

Project description:A new species of the genus Gammarus Fabricius, 1775 is described and illustrated from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Gammaruszhouqiongi sp. nov. is characterized by pereopods III-IV with long straight setae on posterior margins; inner ramus of uropod III more than twice as long as peduncle, reaching 0.7 times the length of outer ramus; inner ramus with plumose setae, and outer ramus with both plumose setae and long simple setae. Detailed morphological comparisons with related species are discussed. The K2P distances for each marker (CO1, 16S, 28S, and EF1α) of the new species differ from those of other Gammarus species in Xinjiang. Both phylogenetic trees based on separate (CO1, 16S, 28S, and EF1α) and combined (CO1+16S+28S+EF1α) markers show that the new species is an independent branch. A key to identify Gammarus species in Xinjiang is provided.
