Water capacity and size data of reverse micelles formed by novel cationic surfactants.

ABSTRACT: This paper contains data of water capacity (in terms of w ₀ = mol_water/mol_surfactant) in reverse micelles formed by several commercial and non-commercial cationic surfactants in cyclopentane, petroleum ether, and iso-octane. Also reported are hydrodynamic diameters of the respective reverse micelles formed. Tested surfactants were (i) single-chained cationics: cetyl benzyl diethanolammonium bromide (CBDB), cetyl benzyl dimethylammonium bromide (CBMB), cetyl dibutyl ethanolammonium bromide (CDBEB), cetyl cyclohexyl dimethylammonium bromide (CCDB); and (ii) twin-chained cationics: didodecyl dimethylammonium chloride (DDMC), didodecyl diethylammonium bromide (DDEB), didodecyl dipropylammonium bromide (DDPB), didodecyl diethylammonium chloride (DDEC), dodecyl benzyl dimethylammonium bromide (DBDMB). Also reported are sizes of reverse micelles as determined by dynamic light scattering.

Topological Dynamics of Micelles Formed by Geometrically Varied Surfactants.

Project description:The molecular architecture of sugar-based surfactants strongly affects their self-assembled structure, i.e., the type of micelles they form, which in turn controls both the dynamics and rheological properties of the system. Here, we report the segmental and mesoscopic structure and dynamics of a series of C16 maltosides with differences in the anomeric configuration and degree of tail unsaturation. Neutron spin-echo measurements showed that the segmental dynamics can be modeled as a one-dimensional array of segments where the dynamics increase with inefficient monomer packing. The network dynamics as characterized by dynamic light scattering show different relaxation modes that can be associated with the micelle structure. Hindered dynamics are observed for arrested networks of worm-like micelles, connected to their shear-thinning rheology, while nonentangled diffusing rods relate to Newtonian rheological behavior. While the design of novel surfactants with controlled properties poses a challenge for synthetic chemistry, we demonstrate how simple variations in the monomer structure can significantly influence the behavior of surfactants.

Water loading driven size, shape, and composition of cetyltrimethylammonium/hexanol/pentane reverse micelles.

Project description:Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/hexanol reverse micelles have found a variety of applications that demand control over physical parameters. Water content or loading is among the most basic tunable components and is the major driver of the physical properties of these systems. This study uses small-angle scattering with contrast variation to characterize these systems as a function of water loading. The scattering data were analyzed with a variety of approaches, resulting in converging physical specifications. Equations that describe basic physical parameters were determined that allow for characterization and manipulation of the CTAB/hexanol reverse micelle surfactant system. The shape of the reverse micelles was revealed to be slightly ellipsoidal and varies slightly through the water loading range. The surfactant shell is shown to contain a higher fraction of hexanol upon addition of water. Analysis reveals that the size, shape, and surfactant/cosurfactant composition are directly tunable by variation of the water content and that these properties are consequences of the balance of forces present in the reverse micelles.

Synergy between surfactants' stiffness and concentration on their self-assembly into reverse micelles as water droplet carriers in nonpolar solvents.

Project description:A study of the self-assembly process into reverse micelles (RMs) of linear surfactants and monomeric aqueous solutes dissolved in nonpolar solvents, varying the concentration (cs) and the persistence length (Lp) of the surfactants is presented here. The influence of cs and Lp on the structural and dynamic properties of the aggregates is investigated through mesoscopic simulations carried out with the dissipative particle dynamics method. All simulations are performed at a fixed water/surfactant molecular ratio of 2:1, varying the surfactant concentration from c = 6 wt% up to c = 12 wt%, for increasing surfactants' rigidity from Lp = 0.73 nm up to Lp = 44.99 nm. It is found that there exists a collaborative interplay between cs and Lp that enhances the number of RMs assembled and their diffusion as carriers of water droplets. These results should be useful as guidelines to understand and improve processes where the RMs are implemented to carry aqueous solutes in nonpolar solvents.

Fabrication of Soft-Oxometalates {Mo132} Clusters With Novel Azobenzene Surfactants: Size Control by Micelles and Light.

Project description:Soft-oxometalates (SOMs) are colloid suspensions of superstructured assemblies of polyoxometalates (POMs) and are found to be very effective photo-catalysts in a number of chemical reactions. The stabilization of SOMs generally requires legends or stabilizers, e.g., polymers and surfactants. In this paper, a light responsive azobenzene surfactant, C10AZOC2N3, was developed and used to stable {Mo132} SOMs. Various techniques such as Dynamic light scattering, TEM, UV-Vis spectra and cyclic voltammetry were employed to characterize the experimental results. The outstanding structure-directing effect of surfactant self-assembly micelles in solution on inorganic counter-anions was demonstrated. Different amount of cyclohexane was solubilized into C10AZOC2N3 micelles to successfully control the size of {Mo132} SOMs cluster. Furthermore, the clusters exposed to UV light for a certain time can be served as a second trigger to control the size of SOMs due to the trans-cis conformation transition of surfactant molecules. The redox potentials of C10AZOC2N3-{Mo132} SOMs were investigated as the cluster size varied. Interestingly, the redox potential of {Mo132} was not affected by the cluster size, indicating that the presence of surfactant did not change the main function of {Mo132} as an electrochemical catalyst, but merely assisted in the size control of SOM aggregation.

Probing the structure and dynamics of confined water in AOT reverse micelles.

Project description:Reverse micelles are attractive nanoscale systems used for the confinement of molecules in studies of structure and chemical reactions, including protein folding, and aggregation. The simulation of reverse micelles, in which a water "pool" is separated from a nonpolar bulk phase by a surfactant layer, poses significant challenges to empirical force fields due to the diversity of interactions between nonpolar, polar, and charged groups. We have explored the dependence of system density, reverse micelle structure, and water configurational relaxation times as a function of reverse micelle composition, including water:surfactant ratio, absolute number of water molecules, and force field using molecular dynamics simulations. The resulting structures and dynamics are found to depend more on the force field used than on varying interpretations of the water:surfactant ratio in terms of absolute size of the reverse micelle. Substantial deviations from spherical reverse micelle geometries are observed in all unrestrained simulations. Rotational anisotropy decay times and water residence times show a strong dependence on force field and water model used, but power-law relaxation in time is observed independent of the force field. Our results suggest the need for further experimental study of reverse micelles that can provide insight into the distribution and dynamics of shape fluctuations in these complex systems.

Gold nanoparticles stabilized with sulphonated imidazolium salts in water and reverse micelles.

Project description:Herein we describe the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) in presence of sulphonated imidazolium salts [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropyl-4-sodiumsulfonatophenyl)imidazolium (L1), 1-mesityl-3-(3-sulfonatopropyl)imidazolium (L2) and 1-(3-sulfonatopropyl)imidazolium (L3)] in water and in a confinement environment created by reverse micelles (RMs). The Au-NPs were characterized-with an excellent agreement between different techniques-by UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential. In homogeneous media, the Au-NPs interact with the imidazolium ring and the sulphonate groups were directed away from the NPs' surface. This fact is responsible for the Au-NPs' stability-over three months-in water. Based on the obtained zeta potential values we assume the degree of coverage of the Au-NPs by the imidazolium salts. In n-heptane/sodium 1,4-bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT)/water RMs, the Au-NPs formed in presence of sulphonated imidazolium salts present different patterns depending on the ligand used as stabilizer. Interestingly, the Au-NPs are more stable in time when the salts are present in AOT RMs (three weeks) in comparison with the same RMs system but in absence of ligands (less than an hour). Clearly, the sulphonated imidazolium salts are very effective Au-NPs stabilizers in a different medium and this generates a plus to be able to use them for multiple purposes.

Role of Different States of Solubilized Water on Solvation Dynamics and Rotational Relaxation of Coumarin 490 in Reverse Micelles of Gemini Surfactants, Water/12-s-12.2Br- (s = 5, 6, 8)/n-Propanol/Cyclohexane.

Project description:The present study demonstrates how the different states of solubilized water viz. quaternary ammonium headgroup-bound, bulklike, counterion-bound, and free water in reverse micelles of a series of cationic gemini surfactants, water/12-s-12 (s = 5, 6, 8).2Br-/n-propanol/cyclohexane, control the solvation dynamics and rotational relaxation of Coumarin 490 (C-490) and microenvironment of the reverse micelles. The relative number of solubilized water molecules of a given state per surfactant molecule decides major and minor components. A rapid increase in the number of bulklike water molecules per surfactant molecule as compared to the slow increase in the number of each of headgroup- and counterion-bound water molecules per surfactant molecule with increasing water content (W o) in a given reverse micellar system is responsible for the increase in the rate of solvation and rotational relaxation of C-490. The increase in the number of counterion-bound water molecules per surfactant molecule and the concomitant decrease in the number of bulklike water molecules per surfactant molecule with increasing spacer chain length of gemini surfactants at a given W o are ascribed to the slower rates of both solvation and rotational relaxation. Relative abundances of different states of water have a role on the microenvironment of the reverse micelles as well. Thus, a comprehensive effect of different states of water on dynamics in complex biomimicking systems has been presented here.

Transfection by cationic gemini lipids and surfactants.

Project description:Diseases that are linked to defective genes or mutations can in principle be cured by gene therapy, in which damaged or absent genes are either repaired or replaced by new DNA in the nucleus of the cell. Related to this, disorders associated with elevated protein expression levels can be treated by RNA interference via the delivery of siRNA to the cytoplasm of cells. Polynucleotides can be brought into cells by viruses, but this is not without risk for the patient. Alternatively, DNA and RNA can be delivered by transfection, i.e. by non-viral vector systems such as cationic surfactants, which are also referred to as cationic lipids. In this review, recent progress on cationic lipids as transfection vectors will be discussed, with special emphasis on geminis, surfactants with 2 head groups and 2 tails connected by a spacer.

Factors affecting size and swelling of poly(ethylene glycol) microspheres formed in aqueous sodium sulfate solutions without surfactants.

Project description:The LCST behavior of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in aqueous sodium sulfate solutions was exploited to fabricate microspheres without the use of other monomers, polymers, surfactants or organic solvents. Reactive PEG derivatives underwent thermally induced phase separation to produce spherical PEG-rich domains that coarsened in size pending gelation, resulting in stable hydrogel microspheres between approximately 1 and 100 microns in size. The time required to reach the gel point during the coarsening process and the extent of crosslinking after gelation both affected the final microsphere size and swelling ratio. The gel point could be varied by pre-reaction of the PEG derivatives below the cloud point, or by controlling pH and temperature above the cloud point. Pre-reaction brought the PEG derivatives closer to the gel point prior to phase separation, while the pH and temperature influenced the rate of reaction. Dynamic light scattering indicated a percolation-to-cluster transition about 3-5 min following phase separation. The mean radius of PEG-rich droplets subsequently increased with time to the 1/4th power until gelation. PEG microspheres produced by these methods with controlled sizes and densities may be useful for the production of modular scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Tissue Distribution of Several Series of Cationic Surfactants in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Following Exposure via Water.

Project description:Bioaccumulation assessment is important for cationic surfactants in light of their use in a wide variety of consumer products and industrial processes. Because they sorb strongly to natural surfaces and to cell membranes, their bioaccumulation behavior is expected to differ from other classes of chemicals. Divided over two mixtures, we exposed rainbow trout to water containing 10 alkyl amines and 2 quaternary alkylammonium surfactants for 7 days, analyzed different fish tissues for surfactant residues, and calculated the tissues' contribution to fish body burden. Mucus, skin, gills, liver, and muscle each contributed at least 10% of body burden for the majority of the test chemicals. This indicates that both sorption to external surfaces and systemic uptake contribute to bioaccumulation. In contrast to the analogue alkylamine bases, the permanently charged quaternary ammonium compounds accumulated mostly in the gills and were nearly absent in internal tissues, indicating that systemic uptake of the charged form of cationic surfactants is very slow. Muscle-blood distribution coefficients were close to 1 for all alkyl amines, whereas liver-blood distribution coefficients ranged from 13 to 90, suggesting that the dominant considerations for sorption in liver are different from those in blood and muscle. The significant fraction of body burden on external surfaces can have consequences for bioaccumulation assessment.
