Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) is induced and functions both as a cellular response to stress and to stimulate proliferation in multiple tissues. However, in the nervous system ATF3 is expressed only in injured neurons. Here we reveal a function of ATF3 in neurons under death stress.
