Datasets for multi-scale diffraction analysis (synchrotron XRD and EBSD) of twinning-detwinning during tensile-compressive deformation of AZ31B magnesium alloy samples.

ABSTRACT: Diffraction data were collected using synchrotron X-ray scattering (sXRD) and electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) during in situ tensile-compressive deformation of Mg alloy AZ31B dogbone samples. The onset and evolution of twinning and detwinning were monitored based on intensity changes in sXRD 2D scattering patterns (which also provided average elastic strain values through the calculation of orientation-specific lattice spacing changes), and EBSD, that revealed the micro-scale grain morphology changes. The observations were interpreted and analysed with the help of crystal plasticity finite element modelling (CP-FEM), as reported in the published article (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijplas.2019.02.018).

Deformation twinning and grain partitioning in a hexagonal close-packed magnesium alloy.

Project description:Pervasive deformation twinning in magnesium greatly affects its strength and formability. The local stress fields associated with twinning play a key role on deformation behavior and fracture but are extremely difficult to characterize experimentally. In this study, we perform synchrotron experiments with differential-aperture X-ray microscopy to measure the 3D stress fields in the vicinity of a twin with a spatial resolution of 0.5 micrometer. The measured local stress field aids to identify the sequence of events involved with twinning. We find that the selected grain deforms elastically before twinning, and the twin formation splits the grain into two non-interacting domains. Under further straining one domain of the grain continued to deform elastically, whereas the other domain deforms plastically by prismatic slip. This heterogeneous deformation behavior may be mediated by the surrounding medium and it is likely to lead to asymmetric twin growth.

Deformation Induced Hierarchical Twinning Coupled with Omega Transformation in a Metastable ?-Ti Alloy.

Project description:Hierarchical twinning, at multiple length scales, was noted in a metastable body-centered cubic (bcc) ?-titanium alloy on tensile deformation. Site-specific characterization within the deformation bands, carried out using EBSD and TEM, revealed {332} <113> type primary bcc twins, containing different variants of secondary and tertiary twins, as well as the formation of stress-induced martensite (?"). Within the primary {332} <113> type twin, "destruction" of the prior quenched-in athermal ? phase was observed, while a stress-induced ? phase reforms within the tertiary twins, revealing the intricate nature of coupling between deformation twinning and displacive ? transformation.

Tensile deformation behavior of twist grain boundaries in CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy bicrystals.

Project description:High entropy alloys (HEA) are a class of materials that consist of multiple elemental species in similar concentrations. The use of elements in far from dilute concentrations introduces a multi-dimensional composition design space by which the properties of metallic systems can be tailored. While the mechanical behavior of HEAs has been the subject of active research recently, the role of grain boundaries (GBs) in their deformation behavior remains poorly understood. Motivated by recent experiments on HEAs demonstrating that GBs act as nucleation sites for deformation twins, herein, we leverage atomistic simulations to construct a series of equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi HEA bicrystals with [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] symmetric twist GBs and examine their tensile behavior and underlying deformation mechanisms at 77 K. Simulation results reveal that plastic deformation proceeds by the nucleation of partial dislocations from GBs, which then grow with further loading by bowing into the bulk crystals leaving behind stacking faults. Variations in the nucleation stress exist as function of GB character, defined in this work by the twist angle. Our results provide future avenues to explore GBs as a microstructure design tool to develop HEAs with tailored properties.

Cryogenic strength improvement by utilizing room-temperature deformation twinning in a partially recrystallized VCrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy.

Project description:The excellent cryogenic tensile properties of the CrMnFeCoNi alloy are generally caused by deformation twinning, which is difficult to achieve at room temperature because of insufficient stress for twinning. Here, we induced twinning at room temperature to improve the cryogenic tensile properties of the CrMnFeCoNi alloy. Considering grain size effects on the critical stress for twinning, twins were readily formed in the coarse microstructure by cold rolling without grain refinement by hot rolling. These twins were retained by partial recrystallization and played an important role in improving strength, allowing yield strengths approaching 1?GPa. The persistent elongation up to 46% as well as the tensile strength of 1.3?GPa are attributed to additional twinning in both recrystallized and non-recrystallization regions. Our results demonstrate that non-recrystallized grains, which are generally avoided in conventional alloys because of their deleterious effect on ductility, can be useful in achieving high-strength high-entropy alloys.

Plastic deformation mechanisms in a severely deformed Fe-Ni-Al-C alloy with superior tensile properties.

Project description:Nanostructured metals have high strength while they usually exhibit limited uniform elongation. While, a yield strength of approximately 2.1 GPa and a uniform elongation of about 26% were achieved in a severely deformed Fe-24.8%Ni-6.0%Al-0.38%C alloy in the present work. The plastic deformation mechanisms for the coarse-grained (CG) sample and the cold-rolled (CR) samples of this alloy were investigated by a series of mechanical tests and microstructure characterizations before and after tensile tests. No obvious phase transformation was observed during the tensile deformation for the CG sample, and the plastic deformation was found to be mainly accommodated by deformation twins and dislocation behaviors. While significant phase transformation occurs for the CR samples due to the facts that the deformed grains by CR are insufficient to sustain the tensile deformation themselves and the flow stress for the CR samples is high enough to activate the martensite transformation. The amount of phase transformation increases with increasing thickness reduction of CR, resulting in excellent tensile ductility in the severely deformed alloy. The back stress hardening was found to play a more important role in the CR samples than in the CG sample due to the dynamically reinforced heterogeneous microstructure by phase transformation.

Deformation twinning evolution from a single crystal in a face-centered-cubic ternary alloy.

Project description:Deformation twinning evolution from a single crystal is conducted by molecular dynamics simulations, to elucidate a twinned face-centered-cubic alloy in an experiment with hardness up to 100 times as that of single crystals, and with ductility simultaneously. Critical twinning stress of cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe or CZT) calculated is 1.38 GPa. All the twin boundaries are along the (11-1) orientation, except the one with the (-111) plane that supports the indentation, interpreting the unidirectional and boundary-free characteristics, confirmed in the experiment. Three twin thicknesses after unloading are 3.2, 3.5, and 16 nm, which is consistent with the experimentally repeated pattern of a lamellar twin with thickness larger than 12.7 nm, followed by one or several twins with thicknesses smaller than 12.7 nm. An inverse triangle of a twin combining with three twins generate a synergistic strengthening effect through the hardening and softening functions, illuminating the ultrahigh hardness demonstrated in the experiment. Twinning takes place in loading, and detwinning occurs in unloading, which expounds the high ductility observed in the experiment.

Unique transition of yielding mechanism and unexpected activation of deformation twinning in ultrafine grained Fe-31Mn-3Al-3Si alloy.

Project description:Tensile mechanical properties of fully recrystallized TWIP steel specimens having various grain sizes (d) ranging from 0.79 μm to 85.6 μm were investigated. It was confirmed that the UFG specimens having the mean grain sizes of 1.5 μm or smaller abnormally showed discontinuous yielding characterized by a clear yield-drop while the specimens having grain sizes larger than 2.4 μm showed normal continuous yielding. In-situ synchrotron radiation XRD showed dislocation density around yield-drop in the UFG specimen quickly increased. ECCI observations revealed the nucleation of deformation twins and stacking faults from grain boundaries in the UFG specimen around yielding. Although it had been conventionally reported that the grain refinement suppresses deformation twinning in FCC metals and alloys, the number density of deformation twins in the 0.79 μm grain-sized specimen was much higher than that in the specimens with grain sizes of 4.5 μm and 15.4 μm. The unusual change of yielding behavior from continuous to discontinuous manner by grain refinement could be understood on the basis of limited number of free dislocations in each ultrafine grain. The results indicated that the scarcity of free dislocations in the recrystallized UFG specimens changed the deformation and twinning mechanisms in the TWIP steel.

Mechanisms of chemical-reaction-induced tensile deformation of an Fe/Ni/Cr alloy revealed by reactive atomistic simulations.

Project description:High entropy alloys (HEAs) have demonstrated excellent potential in various applications owing to the unique properties. One of the most critical issues of HEAs is the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) which limits its reliability in practical applications. However, the SCC mechanisms have not been fully understood yet because of the difficulty of experimental measuring of atomic-scale deformation mechanisms and surface reactions. In this work, we conduct atomistic uniaxial tensile simulations using an FCC-type Fe40Ni40Cr20 alloy as a typical simplification of normal HEAs, in order to reveal how a corrosive environment such as high-temperature/pressure water affects the tensile behaviors and deformation mechanisms. In a vacuum, we observe the generation of layered HCP phases in an FCC matrix during tensile simulation induced by the formation of Shockley partial dislocations from surface and grain boundaries. While, in the corrosive environment of high-temperature/pressure water, the alloy surface is oxidized by chemical reactions with water and this oxide surface layer can suppress the formation of Shockley partial dislocation as well as the resulting FCC-to-HCP phase transition; instead, a BCC phase is preferred to generate in the FCC matrix for releasing the tensile stress and stored elastic energy, leading to a reduced ductility as the BCC phase is typically more brittle than the FCC and HCP. Overall, the deformation mechanism of the FeNiCr alloy is changed by the presence of a high-temperature/pressure water environment-from FCC-to-HCP phase transition in vacuum to FCC-to-BCC phase transition in water. This theoretical fundamental study may contribute to the further improvement of HEAs with high resistance to SCC in experiments.

Acoustic Emission of Deformation Twinning in Magnesium.

Project description:The Acoustic Emission of deformation twinning in Magnesium is investigated in this article. Single crystal testing with combined full field deformation measurements, as well as polycrystalline testing inside the scanning electron microscope with simultaneous monitoring of texture evolution and twin nucleation were compared to testing at the laboratory scale with respect to recordings of Acoustic Emission activity. Single crystal testing revealed the formation of layered twin boundaries in areas of strain localization which was accompanied by distinct changes in the acoustic data. Testing inside the microscope directly showed twin nucleation, proliferation and growth as well as associated crystallographic reorientations. A post processing approach of the Acoustic Emission activity revealed the existence of a class of signals that appears in a strain range in which twinning is profuse, as validated by the in situ and ex situ microscopy observations. Features extracted from such activity were cross-correlated both with the available mechanical and microscopy data, as well as with the Acoustic Emission activity recorded at the laboratory scale for similarly prepared specimens. The overall approach demonstrates that the method of Acoustic Emission could provide real time volumetric information related to the activation of deformation twinning in Magnesium alloys, in spite of the complexity of the propagation phenomena, the possible activation of several deformation modes and the challenges posed by the sensing approach itself when applied in this type of materials evaluation approach.

Deformation twinning induced decomposition of lamellar LPSO structure and its re-precipitation in an Mg-Zn-Y alloy.

Project description:The high hardness or yield strength of an alloy is known to benefit from the presence of small-scale precipitation, whose hardening effect is extensively applied in various engineering materials. Stability of the precipitates is of critical importance in maintaining the high performance of a material under mechanical loading. The long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structures play an important role in tuning the mechanical properties of an Mg-alloy. Here, we report deformation twinning induces decomposition of lamellar LPSO structures and their re-precipitation in an Mg-Zn-Y alloy. Using atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we directly illustrate that the misfit dislocations at the interface between the lamellar LPSO structure and the deformation twin is corresponding to the decomposition and re-precipitation of LPSO structure, owing to dislocation effects on redistribution of Zn/Y atoms. This finding demonstrates that deformation twinning could destabilize complex precipitates. An occurrence of decomposition and re-precipitation, leading to a variant spatial distribution of the precipitates under plastic loading, may significantly affect the precipitation strengthening.
