New species of the subgenus Epiphragma Osten Sacken from China (Diptera, Limoniidae).

ABSTRACT: Previously 12 species of the subgenus Epiphragma (Epiphragma) Osten Sacken, 1860 were known to occur in China. The following three species are described and illustrated as new to science: E. (E.) acuminatumsp. nov., E. (E.) henanensissp. nov., and E. (E.) longitubumsp. nov.. Epiphragma (E.) insigne van der Wulp, 1878 is reported from China for the first time and is illustrated based on additional morphological characters. An updated key to the species of the subgenus E. (Epiphragma) from China is presented.

Project description:Japanese species of the genus Ulomorpha Osten Sacken, 1869 are revised and U. amamiana Kato & Kolcsár, sp. nov. and U. longipenis Kato & Kolcsár, sp. nov. are described. A key to the four Japanese species of the genus is provided, with images of habitus and wings, and drawings of their male terminalia. Ulomorpha amamiana Kato & Kolcsár, sp. nov. is the first representative of the genus discovered from the Oriental region.

Project description:BackgroundThe Mediterranean Region of the West Palearctic is one of the most species-rich biomes in the world, hosting a high level of endemism and relict species with important conservation value. The North Africa Atlas Mountains (spanning Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia) belong to a poorly-investigated region of the Mediterranean area, with overlooked aquatic biodiversity; hence, a number of species still remain to be discovered.New informationThe subgenus Antocha (Antocha) Osten Sacken, 1860 is recorded for the first time from Africa, with a description of A. (A.) staryi Keresztes & Mabrouki sp. nov. from hilly regions of the Middle Atlas region, Morocco. The unique design of the male terminalia differentiates well the newly-discovered species from its closely-related and range-restricted A. (A.) phoenicia Thomas and Dia, 1982. This is in contrast with the high intraspecific and geographically poorly-defined variability of the widespread A. (A.) vitripennis (Meigen, 1830), for which morphological variability of male genital structures is discussed.Illustrations of male genital parts, distribution data and key to the species from the West Palearctic area are also provided.

One new species of the subgenus Hexatoma (Eriocera) Macquart (Diptera, Limoniidae) from China with a key to Chinese species.

Project description:One new species of the subgenus Eriocera Macquart, 1838, Hexatoma (Eriocera) cleopatroides Men, sp. n. (Southern China: Anhui) is described and illustrated. A key to all of 78 known species from China in the subgenus is provided, which was solely based on literatures. The new species is similar to Hexatoma (Eriocera) cleopatra Alexander, 1933, but distinguishes from the latter by the prescutum entirely black with two ill-defined gray stripes, by the legs with fore and middle femora brown in basal half, black in apical half, with hind femora brown in basal one-fourth, and by the wings with cells c and sc more yellowish brown than the ground color.

Project description:Twenty species of Libnotes (Laosa) Edwards, 1926 are known worldwide and three are known from China so far. Here, two species of Laosa are added to the Chinese fauna, of which L. (L.) baiyunensissp. nov. is described and illustrated as new to science, and L. (L.) fuscinervis Brunetti, 1912 is newly recorded from China. Morphologically, the new species is most similar to L. (L.) charmosyne (Alexander, 1958) but can be distinguished by the pleura of the thorax, the relative position of the additional cross veins in cell r3 and r5, and the details of the male genitalia. A key to the world species of Laosa is presented.

Project description:Two new species of Limonia Meigen, 1803, Limonia medexocha sp. nov. and Limonia subcosta sp. nov. are described and illustrated from Northwest China. First record of Neoempheria Osten Sacken (Diptera, Mycetophilidae) biology in the Neotropical region, with associations between its larvae and fungi.

Project description:BackgroundMembers of the family Mycetophilidae (Diptera) have life cycles that are typically associated with fungus. Their biology is relatively well known in the Palaearctic, though other regions are poorly known, and there are no associations recorded between mycetophilid immatures and fungi in the Neotropical region. Here we report the first association between a mycetophilid-Neoempheriapuncticoxa Edwards-and fungi in this region. Immatures of N.puncticoxa were collected on fungi and some were reared in the laboratory until adult emergence. The immature stages and adult of N.puncticoxa are described and re-described respectively, and high resolution images and illustrations of the habitus, wings, thorax, male and female terminalia, immatures, and in situ specimens are given.New informationWe report the first association between Mycetophilidae and fungi in the Neotropical region.
