The mammalian cochlea develops from a ventral outgrowth of the otic vesicle in response to Shh signaling. Mouse embryos lacking Shh or its essential signal transduction components display cochlear agenesis; however, a detailed understanding of the transcriptional network mediating this process is unclear.
