Organic Liquid Impregnation Behavior into Nanofibrous Membranes: Quantitative Analysis of the Effects of Structural Parameters.

ABSTRACT: This paper reports the effects of structural parameters on organic liquid impregnation behavior into nanofibrous (NF) polymer membranes. The NF membranes were prepared from organic liquidphilic polymers, poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs), by electrospinning. The impregnation velocity of the organic liquid, ethylmethylcarbonate, into the as-spun PAI NF membranes with diameters ranging from 400 to 900 nm was approximately 10-20 times higher than that into commercial cellulose nonwoven membranes. Our theoretical analyses based on the Kozeny-Carman equation and multivariate statistics clearly indicate that in addition to the porosity of the membranes, the variation in fiber diameter as well as the average fiber diameter is a crucial factor for controlling the liquid impregnation behavior.

Infused-liquid-switchable porous nanofibrous membranes for multiphase liquid separation.

Project description:Materials with selective wettabilities are widely used for effective liquid separation in environmental protection and the chemical industry. Current liquid separation strategies are primarily based on covalent modification to control the membranes' surface energy, or are based on gating mechanisms to accurately tune the gating threshold of the transport substance. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and universal polarity-based protocol to regulate the wetting behavior of superamphiphilic porous nanofibrous membranes by infusing a high polar component of surface energy liquid into the membranes, forming a relatively stable liquid-infusion-interface to repel the immiscible low polar component of surface energy liquid. Even immiscible liquids with a surface energy difference as small as 2 mJ m-2, or emulsions stabilized by emulsifiers can be effectively separated. Furthermore, the infused liquid can be substituted by another immiscible liquid with a higher polar component of surface energy, affording successive separation of multiphase liquids.Separating immiscible liquids with small surface energy differences remains a challenge. Here, the authors develop a polarity-based strategy for the separation of multiphase mixtures of immiscible liquids, even those with surface energy differences as small as 2 mJ m-2.

Coaxial Electrospun Porous Core-Shell Nanofibrous Membranes for Photodegradation of Organic Dyes.

Project description:In this study, a series of AgCl/ZnO-loaded nanofibrous membranes were prepared using coaxial electrospinning. Their physical and chemical characteristics were evaluated by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, IR, PL, and UV-visible spectrometer, and the photocatalytic experiments using methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant. The formation of AgCl/ZnO heterojunction and the structure of core-shell nanofibers with porous shell layer were confirmed. AgCl/ZnO photocatalysts were also effectively loaded onto the surfaces of the porous core-shell nanofibers. The results of photocatalytic experiments revealed that the AgCl/ZnO (MAgCl:MZnO = 5:5)-loaded nanofibrous membrane achieved a degradation efficiency of 98% in just 70 min and maintained a photocatalytic efficiency exceeding 95% over the first five experimental cycles, which successfully addressed the issues of photocatalytic efficiency loss during the photodegradation of MB with AgCl/ZnO nanoparticles as photocatalyst. The photodegradation mechanism was also researched and proposed.

Facile 3D Boron Nitride Integrated Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes for Purging Organic Pollutants.

Project description:Elegant integration of three-dimensional (3D) boron nitride (BN) into the porous structure of a polymer nanofiber (NF) membrane system results in a surface with enhanced absorption capacity for removal. Various BN-based applications were designed and developed successfully, but BN-based absorption systems remain relatively unexplored. To develop a reusable absorption strategy with high removal efficiency, we used a composite of 3D BN and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to prepare a NF membrane with a porous structure by using electrospinning and spray techniques (BN-PAN ES NFs). The removal efficiency of the 3D BN NF membrane was higher than that of a pure carbon NF membrane. Water pollutants, such as the dyes Congo red (CR), basic yellow 1 (BY), and rhodamine B (Rh B), were tested, and the absorption ratios were 46%, 53%, and 45%, respectively. Furthermore, the aforementioned dyes and pollutants can be completely eliminated and removed from water by heating because of the high heat resistance of 3D BN. The membrane can be recycled and reused at least 10 times. These results indicate that BN-PAN ES NFs have can be used in water purification and treatment for absorption applications, and that they can be reused after heat treatment.

In Situ Electrospun Porous MIL-88A/PAN Nanofibrous Membranes for Efficient Removal of Organic Dyes.

Project description:In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) have received extensive attention in the application of water treatment. Hence, it is of great significance to realize a simple and efficient preparation strategy of MOF-based porous NFMs. Herein, we developed a direct in situ formation of MOF/polymer NFMs using an electrospinning method. The porous MOF/polymer NFMs were constructed by interconnecting mesopores in electrospun composite nanofibers using poly(vinylpolypyrrolidone) (PVP) as the sacrificial pore-forming agent. MOF (MIL-88A) particles were formed inside the polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/PVP nanofibers in situ during electrospinning, and the porous MIL-88A/PAN (pMIL-88A/PAN) NFM was obtained after removing PVP by ethanol and water washing. The MOF particles were uniformly distributed throughout the pMIL-88A/PAN NFM, showing a good porous micro-nano morphological structure of the NFM with a surface area of 143.21 m2 g-1, which is conducive to its efficient application in dye adsorption and removal. Specifically, the dye removal efficiencies of the pMIL-88A/PAN NFM for amaranth red, rhodamine B, and acid blue were as high as 99.2, 94.4, and 99.8%, respectively. In addition, the NFM still showed over 80% dye removal efficiencies after five adsorption cycles. The pMIL-88A/PAN NFM also presented high adsorption capacities, fast adsorption kinetics, and high cycling stabilities during the processes of dye adsorption and removal. Overall, this work demonstrates that the in situ electrospun porous MOF/polymer NFMs present promising application potential in water treatment for organic dyestuff removal.

Under-liquid dual superlyophobic nanofibrous polymer membranes achieved by coating thin-film composites: a design principle.

Project description:Surfaces with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity have garnered tremendous interest because of their promising applications, but their unexplored underlying nature restricts the designed construction of such surfaces. Herein, we coated the thin-film composites with different terminal groups over the electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous membranes, which afforded the membranes excellent stability in organic solvents, as well as modulated under-liquid wetting behaviors. Among them, the representative under-liquid dual superlyophobic 4-cyan-Ph-terminated membrane could realize highly efficient separation of all types of oil/water mixtures and even emulsions. Moreover, we found that the under-liquid wetting behaviors could be classified in terms of the intrinsic water contact angle (θ w). By comparing the total interfacial energy, we proved that the under-liquid dual lyophobic surfaces were thermodynamically metastable. On this basis, we could predict the θ w of rough surfaces with the under-liquid dual lyophobicity in a given oil-water-solid system (e.g., 47.3-89.1° in cyclohexane-water-solid system, R = 2). This work provides a design principle for the fabrication of under-liquid dual superlyophobic surfaces, which will open potential applications in diverse fields in terms of such smart surfaces.

Effects of impregnation combined heat treatment on the pyrolysis behavior of poplar wood.

Project description:To investigate the effects of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin impregnation combined heat treatment (IMPG-HT) on the pyrolysis behavior of poplar wood, the chemical composition, pyrolysis characteristics, pyrolysis kinetics, and gaseous products released during pyrolysis of untreated (control), IMPG-HT, IMPG and HT woods were analyzed. The results demonstrate that IMPG-HT changes pyrolysis behavior of poplar wood significantly. Unlike the control and HT samples, the thermogravimetric / derivative thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) curves of IMPG wood shift toward lower temperature, and the shoulder on DTG curves weaken or even disappear. The maximum mass loss rate of IMPG-HT samples decreases, and carbon residual yield increases to 23% or more and activation energy (E) increases sharply after conversion rate (α) reaching 0.80. HT improves the thermal stability of IMPG wood, which is represented by the increase of decomposition temperature (Td) and DTG peak temperature (Tpeak) and the higher E value of IMPG-HT wood. For the pyrolysis gaseous products, IMPG-HT wood produces nitrogen-containing gases (HNCO and NH3) due to the presence of UF resin, but the amounts of these gases are less than that produced by IMPG wood because the heat treatment had removed part of N elements.

Shape-Selective Ultramicroporous Carbon Membranes for Sub-0.1 nm Organic Liquid Separation.

Project description:Liquid-phase chemical separations from complex mixtures of hydrocarbon molecules into singular components are large-scale and energy-intensive processes. Membranes with molecular specificity that efficiently separate molecules of similar size and shape can avoid phase changes, thereby reducing the energy intensity of the process. Here, forward osmosis molecular differentiation of hexane isomers through a combination of size- and shape-based separation of molecules is demonstrated. An ultramicroporous carbon membrane produced with 6FDA-polyimides realized the separation of isomers for different shapes of di-branched, mono-branched, and linear molecules. The draw solvents provide the driving force for fractionation of hexane isomers with a sub-0.1 nm size difference at room temperature without liquid-phase pressurization. Such membranes could perform bulk chemical separations of organic liquids to achieve major reductions in the energy intensity of the separation processes.

Quantitative volatile organic compound sensing with liquid crystal core fibers.

Project description:Polymer fibers with liquid crystals (LCs) in the core have potential as autonomous sensors of airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with a high surface-to-volume ratio enabling fast and sensitive response and an attractive non-woven textile form factor. We demonstrate their ability to continuously and quantitatively measure the concentration of toluene, cyclohexane, and isopropanol as representative VOCs, via the impact of each VOC on the LC birefringence. The response is fully reversible and repeatable over several cycles, the response time can be as low as seconds, and high sensitivity is achieved when the operating temperature is near the LC-isotropic transition temperature. We propose that a broad operating temperature range can be realized by combining fibers with different LC mixtures, yielding autonomous VOC sensors suitable for integration in apparel or in furniture that can compete with existing consumer-grade electronic VOC sensors in terms of sensitivity and response speed.

Diffusion of Protein Molecules through Microporous Nanofibrous Polyacrylonitrile Membranes.

Project description:Porous nanofibrous membranes have ultrahigh specific surface areas and could be broadly employed in protein purification, enzyme immobilization, and biosensors with enhanced selectivity, sensitivity, and efficiency. However, large biomolecules, such as proteins, have hindered diffusion behavior in the micro-porous media, significantly reducing the benefits provided by the nanofibrous membranes. The study of protein diffusion in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous membranes produced under varied humidity and polymer concentration of electrospinning revealed that heterogeneous structures of the nanofibrous membranes possess much smaller effective pore sizes than the measured pore sizes, which significantly affects the diffusion of large molecules through the system though sizes of proteins and pH conditions also have great impacts. Only when the measured membrane pore size is at least 1000 times higher than the protein size, the diffusion behavior of the protein is predictable in the system. The results provide insights into the design and applications of proper nanofibrous materials for improved applications in protein purification and immobilizations.
