Controlling three-dimensional optical fields via inverse Mie scattering.

ABSTRACT: Controlling the propagation of optical fields in three dimensions using arrays of discrete dielectric scatterers is an active area of research. These arrays can create optical elements with functionalities unrealizable in conventional optics. Here, we present an inverse design method based on the inverse Mie scattering problem for producing three-dimensional optical field patterns. Using this method, we demonstrate a device that focuses 1.55-μm light into a depth-variant discrete helical pattern. The reported device is fabricated using two-photon lithography and has a footprint of 144 μm by 144 μm, the largest of any inverse-designed photonic structure to date. This inverse design method constitutes an important step toward designer free-space optics, where unique optical elements are produced for user-specified functionalities.

Non-resonant Mie scattering: emergent optical properties of core-shell polymer nanowires.

Project description:We provide the in-depth characterization of light-polymer nanowire interactions in the context of an effective Mie scattering regime associated with low refractive index materials. Properties of this regime sharply contrast with these of resonant Mie scattering, and involve the formation of strictly forward-scattered and coupling-free optical fields in the vicinity of core-shell polymer nanowires. Scattering from these optical fields is shown to be non-resonant in nature and independent from incident polarization. In order to demonstrate the potential utility of this scattering regime in one-dimensional (1D) polymeric nanostructures, we fabricate polycarbonate (PC) - polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) core-shell nanowires using a novel iterative thermal drawing process that yields uniform and indefinitely long core-shell nanostructures. These nanowires are successfully engineered for novel nanophotonics applications, including size-dependent structural coloration, efficient light capture on thin-film solar cells, optical nano-sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity and a mask-free photolithography method suitable for the straightforward production of 1D nanopatterns.

An electrical analogy to Mie scattering.

Project description:Mie scattering is an optical phenomenon that appears when electromagnetic waves, in particular light, are elastically scattered at a spherical or cylindrical object. A transfer of this phenomenon onto electron states in ballistic graphene has been proposed theoretically, assuming a well-defined incident wave scattered by a perfectly cylindrical nanometer scaled potential, but experimental fingerprints are lacking. We present an experimental demonstration of an electrical analogue to Mie scattering by using graphene as a conductor, and circular potentials arranged in a square two-dimensional array. The tabletop experiment is carried out under seemingly unfavourable conditions of diffusive transport at room-temperature. Nonetheless, when a canted arrangement of the array with respect to the incident current is chosen, cascaded Mie scattering results robustly in a transverse voltage. Its response on electrostatic gating and variation of potentials convincingly underscores Mie scattering as underlying mechanism. The findings presented here encourage the design of functional electronic metamaterials.

Direct Three-Dimensional Measurement of Refractive Index via Dual Photon-Phonon Scattering.

Project description:We developed a microscopy technique that can measure the local refractive index without sampling the optical phase delay of the electromagnetic radiation. To do this, we designed and experimentally demonstrated a setup with two colocalized Brillouin scattering interactions that couple to a common acoustic phonon axis; in this scenario, the ratio of Brillouin frequency shifts depends on the refractive index, but not on any other mechanical and/or optical properties of the sample. Integrating the spectral measurement within a confocal microscope, the refractive index is mapped at micron-scale three-dimensional resolution. As the refractive index is probed in epidetection and without assumptions on the geometrical dimensions of the sample, this method may prove useful to characterize biological cells and tissues.

Three Dimensional Polarimetric Neutron Tomography of Magnetic Fields.

Project description:Through the use of Time-of-Flight Three Dimensional Polarimetric Neutron Tomography (ToF 3DPNT) we have for the first time successfully demonstrated a technique capable of measuring and reconstructing three dimensional magnetic field strengths and directions unobtrusively and non-destructively with the potential to probe the interior of bulk samples which is not amenable otherwise. Using a pioneering polarimetric set-up for ToF neutron instrumentation in combination with a newly developed tailored reconstruction algorithm, the magnetic field generated by a current carrying solenoid has been measured and reconstructed, thereby providing the proof-of-principle of a technique able to reveal hitherto unobtainable information on the magnetic fields in the bulk of materials and devices, due to a high degree of penetration into many materials, including metals, and the sensitivity of neutron polarisation to magnetic fields. The technique puts the potential of the ToF time structure of pulsed neutron sources to full use in order to optimise the recorded information quality and reduce measurement time.

Metasurface-generated complex 3-dimensional optical fields for interference lithography.

Project description:Fast, large-scale, and robust 3-dimensional (3D) fabrication techniques for patterning a variety of structures with submicrometer resolution are important in many areas of science and technology such as photonics, electronics, and mechanics with a wide range of applications from tissue engineering to nanoarchitected materials. From several promising 3D manufacturing techniques for realizing different classes of structures suitable for various applications, interference lithography with diffractive masks stands out for its potential to fabricate complex structures at fast speeds. However, the interference lithography masks demonstrated generally suffer from limitations in terms of the patterns that can be generated. To overcome some of these limitations, here we propose the metasurface-mask-assisted 3D nanofabrication which provides great freedom in patterning various periodic structures. To showcase the versatility of this platform, we design metasurface masks that generate exotic periodic lattices like gyroid, rotated cubic, and diamond structures. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate a diffractive element that can generate the diamond lattice.

Three-dimensional vectorial holography based on machine learning inverse design.

Project description:The three-dimensional (3D) vectorial nature of electromagnetic waves of light has not only played a fundamental role in science but also driven disruptive applications in optical display, microscopy, and manipulation. However, conventional optical holography can address only the amplitude and phase information of an optical beam, leaving the 3D vectorial feature of light completely inaccessible. We demonstrate 3D vectorial holography where an arbitrary 3D vectorial field distribution on a wavefront can be precisely reconstructed using the machine learning inverse design based on multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks. This 3D vectorial holography allows the lensless reconstruction of a 3D vectorial holographic image with an ultrawide viewing angle of 94° and a high diffraction efficiency of 78%, necessary for floating displays. The results provide an artificial intelligence-enabled holographic paradigm for harnessing the vectorial nature of light, enabling new machine learning strategies for holographic 3D vectorial fields multiplexing in display and encryption.

Three-Dimensional Printing of Nonlinear Optical Lenses.

Project description:In the current paper, a series of nonlinear optical (NLO) active devices was prepared by utilizing stereolithographic three-dimensional printing technique. Microcrystalline NLO active component, urea, or potassium dihydrogen phosphate was dispersed in a simple photopolymerizable polyacrylate-based resin and used as the printing material to fabricate highly efficient transparent NLO lenses. The nonlinear activity of the printed lenses was confirmed by second-harmonic generation measurements using a femtosecond laser-pumped optical parametric amplifier operating at a wavelength of 1195 nm. The three-dimensional printing provides a simple method to utilize a range of NLO active compounds without tedious crystal growing and processing steps. Furthermore, introducing NLO additives in the printing material provides an easy and cost-efficient way to manufacture lenses with NLO functionality.

Tuneable Metamaterial-like Platforms for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering via Three-Dimensional Block Co-polymer-Based Nanoarchitectures.

Project description:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) pushes past the boundaries and inherent weaknesses of Raman spectroscopy, with a great potential for a broad range of applications particularly, for sensing. Yet, current real world applications are limited due to poor reproducibility, low-throughput, and stability issues. Here, we present the design and fabrication of self-assembly guided structures based on adjustable block co-polymer (BCP) nanomorphologies and demonstrate reproducible SERS enhancement across large areas. Golden three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured morphologies with controllable dimensions and morphologies exhibit high chemical stability, enhanced plasmonic properties and are highly suitable for SERS substrates due to the strong enhancement of the electromagnetic field. Adjustable, free standing porous nanostructures, continuous in 3D space are achieved by removal of selected BCP constituents. Four BCP morphologies and the corresponding achievable enhancement factors are investigated at 633 and 785 nm excitation wavelengths. The choice of excitation laser is shown to greatly affect the observed signal enhancement, highlighting the sensitivity of the technique to the underlying surface architecture and length scales. By using BCP assemblies, it is possible to reliably tune these parameters to match specific applications, thus bridging the gap toward the realization of applied metamaterials. The fabricated SERS platforms via three-dimensional block co-polymer-based nanoarchitectures provide a recipe for intelligent engineering and design of optimized SERS-active substrates for utilization in the Raman spectroscopy-based devices toward enabling the next-generation technologies fulfilling a multitude of criteria.

Reusable three-dimensional nanostructured substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Project description:To date, fabricating three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured substrate with small nanogap was a laborious challenge by conventional fabrication techniques. In this article, we address a simple, low-cost, large-area, and spatially controllable method to fabricate 3D nanostructures, involving hemisphere, hemiellipsoid, and pyramidal pits based on nanosphere lithography (NSL). These 3D nanostructures were used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates of single Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecule. The average SERS enhancement factor achieved up to 1011. The inevitably negative influence of the adhesion-promoting intermediate layer of Cr or Ti was resolved by using such kind of 3D nanostructures. The nanostructured quartz substrate is a free platform as a SERS substrate and is nondestructive when altering with different metal films and is recyclable, which avoids the laborious and complicated fabricating procedures.
