Sedum ichangensis, a new species of Crassulaceae from Hubei, China.

ABSTRACT: Sedum ichangensis sp. nov., from Yichang, Hubei province, central China, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to S. elatinoides and S. rosthornianum in its leaf and carpel morphology and differs in its creeping stems and solitary flowers. The conservation status of S. ichangensis was assessed as Endangered according to the IUCN Red List criteria.

Project description:We describe and illustrate Sedum lipingense (Crassulaceae), a new species of stonecrop found in the limestone areas of SE Guizhou, China. Based on the presence of adaxially gibbous carpels and follicles, this taxon belongs to sect. Sedum S.H. Fu. The new species superficially resembles S. subtile Miquel and S. bulbiferum Makino but differs from these two taxa in its development of a basal leaf rosette during florescence. The nrDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences also support the claim that this plant is a new species in the Sedum genus.

Oxytropis shennongjiaensis (Fabaceae), a new species from Hubei, Central China.

Project description:Here we describe Oxytropis shennongjiaensis, a new species of Fabaceae from Central China (Hubei Province). Morphologically, O. shennongjiaensis is closely similar to O. sitaipaiensis, O. melanocalyx and O. kansuensis, but differs in stem characters, with less conspicuous internodes; persistent herbaceous stipules; pale yellow to white corolla; and stipitate legumes, 3-5 mm with a long beak. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and two chloroplast markers (trnL-F and psbA-trnH), also identified O. shennongjiaensis as a new species, which is consistent with our morphological analyses. Considering the morphological data and phylogenetic data presented here, we believe that this evidence satisfies the required diagnostic criteria to identify O. shennongjiaensis as a new species.

Geum sunhangii (Rosaceae), a new species from Hubei Province, China.

Project description:Geum sunhangii - first discovered in Shennongjia National Nature Reserve, Hubei Province, China - is described as a new species of Rosaceae. Compared to all known Chinese Geum species, the new species differs by possessing jointed styles, imbricate petals and a reniform radical leaf terminal leaflet. Most significantly, the jointed style is curved at an obtuse or a right angle. In addition, the inclusion of this species within the genus Geum was supported by phylogenetic analysis using the sequence data of a nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and a chloroplast trnL-trnF intergenic spacer. The new species was found to be closely related to G. rivale and G. aleppicum.

The complete chloroplast genome of Sedum tricarpum Makino. (Crassulaceae).

Project description:Sedum tricarpum Makino., is a perennial succulent herb, which was first discovered and established as a new species ten years ago. Here, we report the complete chloroplast genome of S. tricarpum. It shows a typical quadripartite structure with a total length of 149,349 bp, including the large single-copy region (LSC) of 81,644 bp, the small single-copy region (SSC) of 16,643 bp, and two separated inverted regions (IRs) of 25,531 bp, respectively. For the whole genome, there are a total of 131 genes, including 85 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 8 rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes. The overall GC content of the cp genome is 37.8%. A well-supported phylogenetic tree revealed monophyly formed by S. tricarpum and S. sarmentosum, suggesting a relatively closer phylogenetic relationship with the clade consisting of S. lineare and Graptopetalum amethystinum. The complete chloroplast genome of S. tricarpum provides valuable information for further phylogenetic reconstruction of the Crassulaceae family.

Youngiahangii (Asteraceae, Crepidinae), a new species from Hubei, China.

Project description:Youngiahangii T.Deng, D.G.Zhang, Qun Liu & Z.M.Li, sp. nov., a new species of Asteraceae, is described and illustrated. It was collected in Wufeng County, Hubei Province, Eastern Central China. Youngiahangii is morphologically most similar to Y.rubida, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by capitula with 8-10 florets and the hairy leaf surface. Phylogenetic analyses, based on the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and one chloroplast marker (rps16), showed that Y.hangii and Y.rubida were sister species with good support. The results of both phylogenetic analysis and the morphological data support the specific rank of Y.hangii.

Development and Characterization of Polymorphic Microsatellite Markers for Sedum sarmentosum (Crassulaceae) and Their Cross-Species Transferability.

Project description:Sedum sarmentosum is an important Chinese medicinal herb that exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic and anti-nociceptive properties. However, little is known about its genetic background. The first set of 14 microsatellite markers were isolated and characterized for S. sarmentosum using an SSR-enriched library. Fourteen polymorphic microsatellite markers were acquired with satisfactory amplifications and a polymorphic pattern in 48 S. sarmentosum individuals. The number of alleles ranged from 3 to 15. The observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.0833 to 0.8750 and 0.2168 to 0.9063, respectively. Two loci showed significant departure from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Cross-species amplification was carried out in other Sedum species. High rates of cross-species amplification were observed. The transferability value ranged from 85.7% in S. lineare to 64.3% in S. ellacombianum. These markers will be valuable for studying the genetic variation, population structure and germplasm characterization of S. sarmentosum and related Sedum species.

Project description:Sedum emarginatum Migo is a perennial herb endemic to China. Here, we assembled and characterized the complete chloroplast genome of S. emarginatum using Illumina sequencing data. Our assembled chloroplast genome is 149,188 base pairs (bp) in length, containing a large single-copy (LSC) region of 81,399 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 16,721 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 25,534 bp. In addition, the chloroplast genome possesses a total of 127 genes, including 82 protein-coding genes, eight rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes.

Primula sunhangii (Primulaceae): a new species from Hubei, Central China.

Project description:This report provides a description of Primula sunhangii from the Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Province in Central China, which is categorized as a new species of the primrose family. Primula sunhangii is morphologically similar to P. involucrata Wall. ex Duby in terms of its simple umbel, efarinose, and prolonged bracts. However, P. sunhangii is distinguished by its glabrous sepal, short petiole (compare with blade) and cylindrical calyx and capsule. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear and cpDNA genes demonstrates that P. sunhangii and P. involucrata are closely related. Combining genetic and morphological data, the recognition of P. sunhangii as a unique new species is supported.

Sedum formosanum subsp. miyakojimense (Crassulaceae), a new subspecies from Miyako-jima Island of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan.

Project description:We re-examined the taxonomic status of plants treated as Sedum formosanum (Crassulaceae) from Miyako-jima Island of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, using morphological comparison and molecular phylogenetic analyses with related species. In morphology, plants from Miyako-jima Island bore a close resemblance to the other plants of S. formosanum, but differed in being perennial, polycarpic, and having lateral axillary branches. Molecular analyses based on ITS of nrDNA and six regions of cpDNA sequencing indicated that the Miyako-jima plants formed a distinct subclade. This subclade was part of a polytomy with three other subclades comprising nine taxa endemic to Taiwan and S. formosanum from other areas, including the type locality. Therefore, we propose and describe the Miyako-jima plants as a new subspecies, Sedum formosanum subsp. miyakojimense.

It contains 130 genes, with 85 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes and 37 tRNA genes. Moreover, the phylogenetic tree shows that S. lineare is closely related to Sedum japonicum.
